Its funny as i some how ended up forming a skate crew thats labeled toxic. In my city there is locals at parks that will expect to be paid for giving lessons or even tips. Its mostly the lockdown era skaters. Then there was me, growing up in small town where if a new person asked for advise, we just helped them out so we could be stoked later on to see them progress and hope they pass what they learned to next person. So when lock down stopped and i moved to new city, i just gave out advice like i have for years while being stoked to help progress. It eventually ended up us being a little crew that is actually very welcoming as we get excited for growth in community. But what made it a crew was the skaters expecting to get paid, they all went around say we are toxic for no reason at all because we took away potentially money from them. We have no issue with paid skate lessons, but we are out here expanding the community with our toxic crew. Lol yes actual skate crews suck, it should be about helping others, not this toxic shit. I blame hipster skaters lol jk.
in 1985 it was on sight with bmxers. People would jump out of cars wanting to fight. Even the police seemed to delight is hassling us. There were not that many people skating then and it was us against everyone. So we embraced it.
love and respect the work you do making these videos. and their messages of skateboardings' positive impact on life on so many levels. BUT ! , brah, the movie "thrashin" is so awesome, still to this day. i'm 51 and still skate and will always love that movie. keep pushing !
One Art can have a lot of different faces. Dance, Music, Painting,... and Skating. Don't stop the fantasy to create and other faces in one art. Dont be afraid to create something new and deferent in your art. Everyone who likes your idea, will follow it. That had make the Skate Crews. Everyone Crew shows a different face of skating and everyone Skater who likes it, can folow it.
Well I am still a beginner but at 54 I don't think that's an issue, the few skateparks I have gone to had cool kids but being that I am 54 I didn't really interact. I am a father of 2 young boys and if I saw some old dude talking to them, I would be very suspicious, you know what I am saying! Anyway the people I have met in my one and a half years of skating has been very positive, I think as an older skater you don't really have to worry about those things, and a good thing because I like this activity it would be sad to think its full of thugs and bullies!!
We were punk nuckleheads in my 80s skate crew! But everyone was this way back then. 90s was i a little better. Now that I'm old, everyone is much more friendly. But there are still clicks that suck to be around.
Content farming nerds are the people that say this crap. Skateboarding and it's culture produces many different types of people all who I've felt I've gotten well along with no matter what their thing was. These online content farming nerds who claim everything is "toxic" are the people I find myself avoiding, they are really the most toxic off all demanding everyone fall in line with their precepted reality. Skateboarding isn't about that at all.
See it's weird being on the other side because there are always kooks that try and "be part of the skate clique" for personal gain so it's really more so to sus out who are the ones that are really in it for the love of skating rather then to discourage anyone who isn't apart of the "gang" so you don't have any weirdos trying to build up any "street cred" to get ahead
aint really seen as much of the toxic skate culture out here in the southeast. lot of the spots around here been who causes trouble and what kind. sure we had rivalries. but not much came of it. seen more of friend groups emerge and they just stick to themselves mostly.
Back in High Scholl there were two crews Liar( which were guys who like the Baker style) and Plow Dog ( sort of like Girl) and they beefed because two different styles. I had friends in both but because my friend Ismael chose to put his friends on Liar and not me . i chose Plow Dog. They welcomed me with open arms and we were waaaay better. The Liar guys were just loud and obnoxious
You need a little bit of both those in skating, good at skating while loud and obnoxious lol. Being a POS can help you in certain situations in skating. Like the security guard that threatened to kill us as soon as he started to talk to us while he looked like he was gonna try to fight us. All about de-escalation as usualyy leave as soon asked to, but being loud and obnoxious helped keep him away from others while packing up. Gotta keep degeneracy in skating to keep the skate hipsters out.

In the 80s in my town everything was about our neighborhood(middle income burbs) didn't matter if it was skating, sandlot football or whatever.
