The principle of Partition was that Muslim majority areas of 'British India' would become Pakistan, depending on factors like contiguity of borders etc. Jammu and Kashmir was NOT a part of British India, but a princely state. In fact the Maharaja, Hari Singh was the Chairman of the Chamber of Princes once. The rulers of these states had the right to choose between the two. This right too was insisted upon by Jinnah, because he had his eye on Bhopal, Junagadh, Hyderabad, all states with Muslim rulers but Hindu majority. He ended up with none of these. So, it was not as simple as 'Muslim majority hai toh Pakistan mein hona chahiye'. The principle of Partition did not apply to J&K, and their Maharaja chose India when Pakistan attacked it on 22nd Oct 1947. India duly came to it's rescue and pushed back the invaders to the current LoC. Sheikh Abdullah did not hold much sway in the areas beyond it, and he probably convinced Nehru to let it be. The decision of acceding to India was ratified by the J&K State Constituent Assembly on 6th Feb 1954.

Pakistan's premature invasion compelled the Maharaja to accede to India, even then it was Pakistan's commission which is to blame. Shahzad, i have been studying partition since the last 20 years. The movement for Pakistan was strong where the Muslims were in Minority e.g United and Central provinces. At best 10 to 15pc of those provinces wanted a separate state. Mr Jinnah wad opposed to plebiscite. How come the British gave nearly 40pc of land to Pakistan? Yet most of the Muslims didn't migrate to Pakistan.

I feel Pakistan should understand. Hindus has one country where they looking for there space as earlier politicians squeezed them for there vote. Hindus do respect all religious. If that was not the case India would have dividend with communal divide longtime.
The only entity in Pakistan that can mend ties with India is the Army. If the Pak Army does that, it will lose its predominant position in Pakistan. Hence, not going to happen. Pakistani people, intellectuals, politicians, comedians etc do not even enter this equation.

And mind you, when Nehru conceptualised a liberated India,it encompassed UNITED INDIA. The principle of Partition was that Muslim majority areas of 'British India' would become Pakistan, depending on factors like contiguity of borders etc. Jammu and Kashmir was NOT a part of British India, but a princely state. In fact the Maharaja, Hari Singh was the Chairman of the Chamber of Princes once. The rulers of these states had the right to choose between the two. This right too was insisted upon by Jinnah, because he had his eye on Bhopal, Junagadh, Hyderabad, all states with Muslim rulers but Hindu majority. He ended up with none of these. So, it was not as simple as 'Muslim majority hai toh Pakistan mein hona chahiye'. The principle of Partition did not apply to J&K, and their Maharaja chose India when Pakistan attacked it on 22nd Oct 1947. India duly came to it's rescue and pushed back the invaders to the current LoC. Sheikh Abdullah did not hold much sway in the areas beyond it, and he probably convinced Nehru to let it be. The decision of acceding to India was ratified by the J&K State Constituent Assembly on 6th Feb 1954.

I know mr sethi gets a lot of flak in Pakistan but as an Indian, I have always looked to Mrs Mohsin and her husband for a rational, thinking view from Pakistan. Disagree with her on Kashmir. Pakistan's premature invasion compelled the Maharaja to accede to India, even then it was Pakistan's commission which is to blame. Even now if you are to hold a plebiscite as Pakistanis demand, the Pakistani army will have to vacate Pok. Nevertheless my best wishes to them both, hope to see Mr Sethi on the podcast too.

At best 10 to 15pc of those provinces wanted a separate state. Mr Jinnah wad opposed to plebiscite. How come the British gave nearly 40pc of land to Pakistan? Yet most of the Muslims didn't migrate to Pakistan.
