I have a question, im 15 almost 16 and last year I dislocated my knee partially with Judo, it was a bit serious and there was a part of the bone of the patella broken, not floating but just partially broken off the patella, doctor said I didnt need anything just rest and I recovered normally again. Should I had gotten surgery? Or with partial chips it isnt needed?

And appart of that I again dislocated my patella partially last week, not because of sport. Just because I was a bit silly. I dont think it means I have instabilities as I can already walk and almost fully bend my knee.

That's what I had in 2006 and popped it back in right away just as a reflex and thank God for this! I have been having issues with my right knee ever since...

Sometimes the cartilage under the kneecap is damaged in the dislocation and can lead to long-term issues. Hopefully that's not the case with yours.

After popping it back, were you able to walk again instantly? How many weeks or months were you able to walk again?
I currently have this one, and its over a week already. I cannot still take a step, yet I can still stand in both legs, with the help of a knee immobilizer.

I have dislocated my right knee twice, such a painful thing oh my word. The second time i just knew that i had done it again and because my mum didn’t know that it was out, we tried to walk inside and BLOODY HELL it hurt. It’s really caused me trouble with my knee and it has become extremely sensitive and it is very hard to get out of my head the two times it has happened. I feel a really uncomfortable feeling when i have to walk across where both of the dislocations occurred and it causes flashbacks. It’s just horrible.

Thanks for this explanation. I am a 46 years old female and first dislocated my knee at 12 years old while dancing. Did it again at 17 when practicing with the girls basketball team and once again in my 20s partially. I had to go to 3 doctors to get one to do exploratory surgery in 2013. I have had therapy and continue to do exercise but I think I need more help. I am starting to experience shooting pain in the quad & hamstring and sometimes in the inner part of my knee. That leg (left) stays swollen. It’s challenging to find a doctor who has dealt with this condition. Any recommendations would be helpful.

Hey thanks for the video! I just had my knee cap pop in and out with no pain and was debating going in for it. I think I will, better safe than sorry.
It would be interesting to know why it almost always goes out to the lateral side. I’m watching this video because i just felt my knee cap popping in and out real quick but it felt like it went to the interior side.
I had that surgery you mentioned for my other knee, I was told I have very shallow groves for my knee cap to sit in so I’m prone to patellar instability.
Anyways thanks for the video! Look forward to seeing your thoughts about reply if you find the time :)

I had a weird situation. I had a patella dislocation (popped out but went back in about 5 seconds later when i fell to teh ground). It popped out because I was intentionally positioning my body and balance in a very awkward position for a silly photo, so it wasn't "random". More like a pretty stupid move on my part. In any case, it resulted in a 3cm2 femoral impaction fracture of the hyaline cartilage, but no loose fragments, and also in an area that's borderline load-bearing vs. non-load bearing. I was actually advised to delay walking, stay off my feet 6 to 8 weeks, because with impaction fractures, if you don't aggravate them immediately, they can often heal moderately well on their own and the cartilage pieces are far more likely to not chunk off and actually maintain adherance. And there was bone bruising behind the impaction so frankly, I was not feeling confident walking anyway for 4 to 6 weeks. Starting around 3 weeks, I started stationary cycling, waterwalking in a pool, seated and laying PT exercises, basically trying to offset atrophy as much as possible without load bearing. I'm at 10 weeks right now. In a couple weeks, I'm flying to Panama to get umbiblical cord stem cells injected in the knee joint as well, to further potentiate cartilage repair and soft tissue repair. I'll stay off my feet for about a week after that, and then around week 12 or 13, I'm slowly going to attempt to regain walking. As a security blanket, I'll be wearing the Breg 20/50 brace (one of the few braces actually designed to dramatically decrease the likelihood of a redislocation). That will allow me to get more aggressive with my PT, and gain muscle and strength doing stuff with the added security blanket of the ideal brace to limit recurrence likelihood. So that's my full regimen. It's an art. I have to balance limiting atrophy, while also limiting load bearing for awhile to potentiate maximal cartilage repair. I'm trying to split the difference to avoid surgery. One really weird thing about my injury; my MRI revealed no tear to the MPFL! I didn't even know that was technically possible! I'm assuming that means "It likely tore to a slight degree, but not enough to be notable on an MRI". Dr. Geier, have you ever seen that before? Where a patella dislocates, but the MPFL is either mostly or entirely intact?

Three Orthopedic Surgeons told me to just do exercises to strengthen the muscles around the patella after dislocating knee twice in a year and several times growing up. Help! I’m 65 and the MRI said, my bone is flat that holds the patella bone in place, and I have some ortho- arthritis now. They said, the MFPL surgery has a high failure rate. My life has been halted with no answers or directions but to just wait for the next dislocation is an 3:47 excruciating thing to look forward to? I can’t find any answers

I wonder if my lateral release about 15 years ago gave my patella too much play. I believe I dislocated my knee a couple of months ago, merely by bending with one foot crossed over it to put on my shoes. It seems to have been provoked by barely any movement at all, although it was quite stiff and sore prior to that (both knees have arthritis). The pain was excruciating, and it was accompanied by a loud pop. I could barely walk or move the joint for about a week, but I gradually saw a return of full range of motion. However, now I can't walk or stand for long without the entire knee hurting, and I'm concerned something else happened simultaneously (meniscus tear?). I'm giving it some time with conservative treatment before opting for a $$$$ MRI, but I'm not optimistic.

My kneecap was dislocated for 4 days due to misdiagnoses as it was just a sprain. Finally got into the ortho doc and had a MPFL Sx it was unsuccessful and countless disloactions kept reacuring. 5 more unsuccessful Sx's. By the 6th they used a swin ligament. No more total dislocations but frequent subluxations. Its been 12ish years now. Im on my feet 10-12 hrs a day along with heavy lifting and painful positions (im a vet tech) The pain, swelling, tightness/catching is a daily struggle. I now am having the same sublux issues is the "good knee"
What do you suggest I do or which direction could you point me in? Besides the obvious daily pain management treatments I already do.

Hi doc, I just had the patellar dislocate hours ago and this is my third time in general but the second time on my right knee. I am not in sports but I am training in theatre and performance and we do a lot of exercises that require a lot running and jumping to improve stamina and the core for stage. I am not sure of what to because when i go to a doctor I am told to do knee exercises to lessen the chances of dislocating again, although it gets to the point where my knee hurts for days. What do you recommend in this situation?

    Advice from anyone.
I had a lateral subluxation about a year ago. And didn’t do PT right away. I’m still dealing with intense pain, limping and it sucks. Mentally. I used to ice skate go hiking workout daily. Do my dog training business. I’m only 29 man and I can’t do any of that anymore. I can barely get though PT sometimes. It’s taking a toll on my mental health cause I feel so hopeless. I havnt been ice skating in an over a year. I can’t handle big dogs when I do training. Can barely hike on a good day. Can lift or squat. And as a girl that sucks. Anyone have any recovery stories?

Okay, im gonna answer my own question. It took 3 weeks for me to be able to walk, using a knee immobilizer. 4 weeks to be able to walk without the aid of it. 5 weeks to be able to walk 2miles without using it, and am able to fold my knees, sit and stand up from the floor.
It really depends on how persevered you are, and how active you are. I rarely take pain killers, tho I massage my knee to toes every morning and every night.
