I dislocated the patella 9 times and I have more or less GOOD news.
After the 6th dislocation, with 17 years old, I got a surgery (lateral release + MPFL repair). I was well for 5 years, until it happened again...
I visited over 10 different orthopedists and 5 physiotherapists during all these years, and started researching a LOT on this topic myself, so I started having my own opinions on the subject.
Some of these doctors proposed me now bone realignment surgery (TTO), others proposed a MPFL reconstruction, others proposed both, and interestingly three other doctors now here in Norway proposed me to not do any more surgeries.
Some physiotherapists recommended to work with my VMO and leg muscles, some recommended to work with my feet muscles (to avoid pronation), some recommended to work more with my glutes since it is the strongest muscle contributing to your leg posture, and some with my balance and proprioception.
I made a decision. To dedicate myself to all these exercises. Attention, depending on your own condition (presence of osteoarthritis and a few other factors), these exercises might or not be suitable to you:
Cycling, elliptical training, rowing and running (less recommended if you have osteoarthritis or weak unbalanced muscles overall)
    Leg extension exercises on the last 45 degrees while squeezing something between your knees; Lunges on balance pads; One leg stands / mini squats on balance pads while challenging your balance; Hip thrusters; One leg raises with the other leg balancing on top of an exercise ball; Banded clams; Training your reflexes to pull the VMO faster than the outer muscles;
Proprioception: Constant awareness of the posture of your legs. It is extremely important to understand what dangerous knee / leg positions put you at risk of dislocation. Avoid them the best you can, all the time, especially during risky activities.
Keep a healthy weight: This helps in more ways than you might imagine, both mechanical and biochemical.
    Stretching exercises.
Think about the activities/sports you practice. Look at how risky that activity is for your knee compared to the happiness it gives you. Consider reducing the ones with higher risk/happiness ratios.
After moderately dedicating myself to most of these recommendations (not really sure which contributed the most), I went from frequent dislocations (just some months apart), to only 1 dislocation in the last 6 years, while still doing several risky activities.
I encourage all to pursue a non-surgical path, with all your dedication and constant search for new information, before considering surgery.
Medicine is advancing fast and new studies and methods are being developed every moment. I recommend searching “patellar dislocation” on PubMed: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/ , and finding a world of research in this topic.
There are many difficult words but with time, you will understand most of it.
Medicine is definitely not an exact science so always read several studies, and consult several doctors and physiotherapists, because their conclusions and opinions differ a LOT.
Enjoy life and sports, and commit yourselves!

Hi! I also have patellar lateralization and dislocation. I took some physical therapy but I haven't taken any surgery. I think my problem comes from flat foot or pronation of the foot, which results in knee buckling and patellar lateralization. Do you also have a similar case? Now I have to wear the orthopedic insole to prevent foot pronation.

I dislocated my knee a few months ago, I saw a physical therapist and an orthopedic surgeon. thought i’d share what many comments are asking about...
when your kneecap dislocates it always tears a ligament in the inside of your knee that holds the kneecap in. so after one dislocation you are almost definitely going to dislocate it again. physical therapy strengthens muscles that help support the knee so it’s less likely to dislocate again

As you know, when you seek help, they do knee exams... and the tearing of ACL during those exams leave the joint vulnerable to patellar subluxation. Once you have been through all that, you’re not likely to seek help even if it’s needed.

I've dislocated my patella twice, I gave up field sports as a consequence and took up cycling. But over time I developed patella overload, down to patella alta, so require surgery. Most people will start with conservative treatment such as physio for the VMO, but that can actually make the condition worse by pulling the kneecap up. It's a complicated joint and you need a knee specialist looking at MRIs and Xrays before deciding whether you need surgery - and importantly what type of surgery.

I dislocated my knee twice. The first time it happened was about 5 years ago when I was in the restroom at school. I think I twisted my leg incorrectly. I sat there for awhile until a teacher heard me screaming. I had to have morphine administered before the doctor could put the knee back in. The second time it happened was recently, and interestly enough, it was the same knee that popped out years ago (the left knee). I was just walking out of the kitchen when it happened (thankfully, my family was there and immediately called 911). My knee was popped back in without morphine. Both times the dislocation happened, it felt like horse stepped on my knee. (×_×)⌒☆ I'm still wearing the knee immobilizer, and the doctor said I might have to get knee surgery to stop it from dislocating. It's still a bit unstable, but it doesn't really hurt that bad. I can still walk around, but with a bit of a limp.

Bonnie BunBuns I have floated in the same boat. I dislocated my left twice and had to get surgery. The only difference was it happened at home both times, and the second time it happened I popped it back in myself. Last year I dislocated my right knee. And I think it popped again (I was getting up and I felt painful popping in my knee, it was probably another dislocation). I’m going to the doctor next week. Probably will need surgery. P.S. I would suggest you get surgery even if there is no damage because after dislocating a twice it’s an 85% chance of coming out again and if You dislocated it a third time it’s a 100% chance. Oh and if you really don’t want surgery you can just live with it. It gets to the point where when the knee pops out that it doesn’t hurt so some people just live with it and if their knee comes out they just pop it back in by them self. Not trying to influence your deficiencies, I’m just letting you know what I know.

I'm getting an MRI on my right knee tomorrow to make sure there's no cartilage damage since it completely dislocated like 2 months ago. If not, we're gonna discuss an MPFL for my left knee since it's been subluxating for like 10 years and he's the first doctor to even consider any surgical fix. He said recovery is like 6 months, but if i can get out of my car without my knee going, I'm all for it. I'm ready to be over this issue. My question is, 6 months? I understand if you're an athlete and stuff. But, 6 months?

    • @anndam__
      @anndam__ 6 років тому

@Megan Tholin Yes 6-10 months for the recovery, but everyone is different. As someone had mpfl reconstruction surgery, they had to go physical therapy every 1 week till 4 or 5 months to spread out for 2 weeks. The physical therapy will help you bend your knee, build muscles you lost from the surgery, etc. Because you don't want to damage the new ligament from the surgery.

Since then I graduated high school and never dislocated it again. I neglected it until now, I am going to the police academy and I am doing some of the exercises that I remember from high school and notice that my knee is starting to hurt. Should I just keep pushing through the pain? Should I be doing more of a basic movement. My left knee is knock kneed more than the right. I would appreciate any information from you? I was thinking getting orthotics again and a better shoe. I need to make it through my 6 months Academy this year.... thank you for taking the time to help

I have had this happen from time to time. I like to keep active, and I have noticed that it tends to happen in the day or so after I have done a lot of walking or biking. It's a though the surrounding muscle is fatigued and the knee is weak. I rarely have any pain though, and I have just a little swelling after it dislocates. I am going to try the exercises that you have in your videos and see if things improve. I am not a big fan of surgery especially if I don't have any pain or discomfort. But then it sure would nice not to be concerned about it.

I don’t like causing a scene so I tried to laugh it off but it was so painful I just couldn’t. The pain wasn’t even the worst thing for me, personally. However I have a constant crippling fear that they will just slip out of place at any time. It's almost like I just have a heightened sense of the ligaments around my kneecap and it just always feels like it could just slip out of place.

I just dislocated mine again, last time was 2010 (basketball). Same knee again today (2018), basketball again. I didn't go see a doctor the first time, just popped it back into place, it was swollen for a few days, but I walked on it. It was perfect after about 3-4 weeks or so. Same thing this time, I just popped it back into place today, albeit it was a bit more difficult to get it back into place today for some reason. It hurts less now (hours after it happened). I even went out for a bit and grabbed some food now and walked up and down the steps a few times already, so I don't know. Not sure if should just chill or not, but I already elevated the knee and put some ice on it, but there's no real significant pain to be honest. FYI, my knee was all the way to the outside (nearly 90 degrees). I have no idea if I'm just lucky, if I deal with pain well, or what it is, but I honestly don't feel like it's a big deal.

      Noah okay:)
i couldn’t bend my knee until 1 week after my injury, and it hurt af to step on my foot.
i got a cortisone shot in may this year, to make the pain stop temporarily, cuz they didn’t know what’s wrong with me and that fucking knee hurt so bad.
good luck on your recovery man:) my recovery is almost over, i have my last PT on friday next week:)
ps. if your pain wont go away, go to the doctor’s again, and if it’s really bothering you, get an MRI or something.

Michael Osakwe shit man, good luck on your recovery! the pain got unbearable, so my doc gave me a cortisone shot to get it to stop temporarily.
i was close to not do sports again, but PT has helped a lot, and im allowed to play soccer, but not any kind if contact with other players rn.
good luck man, hope everything turns out well!

Dislocated my knee three weeks ago. Currently doing physio therapy at home - I still can’t lift my leg tho 😭 I’m so scared. Will I need surgery?

I am one of those with a higher Q -angle. Had mpfl reconstruction surgery 4 weeks ago. Slowly recovering. It's not very encouraging

My husband had a patellofemoral replacement (partial knee). The patella did not sublux after surgery for weeks but now dislocates, mostly w/stairs. Do you think he can address this with PT?

This was very interesting. I recently did this just by walking and tripping over something in an awkward way. I had to call the paramedics, and when they put me on a stretcher, it miraculously fixed itself. After that, there was discomfort from all the swelling, but there was little to no pain. After a day of bed rest, I was able to walk just fine with a little limp.
About the 'Q groove' I don't have one. I didn't know our skeletons were designed to move that way.
I do play tennis, though. If you ever see this comment, when do you think it would be ok for me to start playing again? I have done some physical therapy.

I’m thinking this happened last night. If anyone has info hit me up.
I was hip throwing someone and they went ontop of my knee cap from the side. Pushed it inside
I had INSTANT extreme pain and it made a pop like 8 out of 10 pain. And it made a pop
Pain weirdly subsided slowly over the next hour. Now I feel fine. Barely any swelling. Had my knee pulled in every direction by doctor and it does not seem to be compromised in terms of ligament damage it seems ok. I can hear weight on it.
With how badly it hurt at the time and the popI’m scared it is still not right. Anyone else experience somthing similar? Is there somthing I should do for it?
