I used to call it left vs. right hand-dominated swing and a bit confused to hear different instructions. This clearly explains the key differences and pros/cons.

I thought the same thing. I've seen 100s of videos by dozens of instructors, and this is the first time I've ever seen the swing described with so much clarity. I really like the way he doesn't prescribe a specific "correct" way.

I've watched lots of other guys but Mike is the only one who consistently WOWS me with how clearly and simply he explains things. If every golfer was required to watch Mike's videos before ever getting on a course, there would be no more 5 hour rounds waiting for guys to find their balls on every hole.

Last year I experienced "death by youtube". Seeking the magic bullet went only to my personal demise. This is a good enough tutorial, but I recommend finding a trustworthy pro to evaluate your swing, identify faults and fix basics first. Video is essential so you can visualize what the pro is telling you. 86? Awesome. Keep swinging

Lifelong ‘puller’ here. I never understood the right hand ‘throwing’ idea as nobody explained there are two different types of swings. I just tried some right hand one armed drills with a Ben Hogan type right elbow (lower right elbow on downswing, forearm up, L shape like skipping a stone) and it’s a huge difference. This instruction/explanation really helps me understand how to put the two together. Thank you!

Same here, I pull and hit it with my lead arm (left in my case). I've tried but can't hit a ball with my right hand ( throwing ou pushing the club).

I got down to scratch as a thrower but always got too flat and then flippy. I’ve been trying for 3 years to become a puller and it’s not working. I’ve spent $10000 and feel like I’m almost ruined my swing. My handicap is a 3 currently. This video finally helped me understand the difference so thank you! I should probably just go back to throwing and work on my short game.

To be a puller you have to let your body turn fling your arms around. So no pulling down with your arms at all. Your body turn flings them down and around. The softer your arms the better.

I have been told since I started playing golf that I have to use my left hand.
Recently I have been thinking why on earth can I not use my right hand while I am a right handed person.
When I see this video, it confirms that I can use my right hand to throw the ball. The explanation is superb. I believe this is one of the best video about golf swing.

When I was much younger, I played very well . . . carried a 2-hdcp through my 20s. Now I'm almost 80 and getting back to golf after a 23-year layoff. Your video just made me realize I've been a thrower, sometimes trying to be a puller because I thought that's what the best players do. Watching your video several times and watching Fred Couples about a thousand times has made it clear to me that a smooth, effortless, throwing-type swing will reap bountiful rewards on the course, for ME, when I finally get out and play. Thanks so much for explaining the difference and clarifying that it's "OK" to throw.

Wow!! What a great instructional video. I am 63 years of age, have been playing golf since I was 11 years old and had a hiatus of 35 years away from the game, as life got in the way and I have never thought, until now, which type of golfer I was - a puller or a thrower. I think you have sorted out my problem Mike!! I am certain that when I was in my teenage years and playing off single figure handicaps, I was definitely a puller. But now in my 60s, it has been very disturbing to me that I have never been able to get back that effortless, powerful swing I once had. And now I know why. I need to be a thrower. It makes so much sense. I have always loved Freddie Couples’ effortless swing but I never considered how he achieved it. Now I know!!! Thank you so much Mike. Brilliant instruction!! I can’t wait to get down on the range. Best regards from the Giant’s Causeway Coast of Northern Ireland. 😄👍⛳️☘️

This is why its so important to take golf lessons from someone who teaches your golf swing style. also why there are so many contradictions in instructions. I am a Thrower and my game has improved 100% as I am a senior. The puller style will mess up your body if you are not fit and young to swing like that. NIce to see a video that explains the differences so clearly.

I focus on keeping my left arm straight through impact to help locate the club where I want it to be.
It’s taken having a net and a launch monitor in my garage to just play around with things and come to this conclusion.

The throw method is definitely easier on the body and is good for “feel” because we do everything every day with ours hands, BUT the pull method using the whole body to move the club is more consistent in regards to club face alignment at impact, ONCE you figure out the sequence of motions to end up with a square face at impact. The throw method creates more clubface inconsistency at impact but is simpler and easier to get some kind of reasonable results.
    Great explanation video though!!!

Thank you truly, this explains a lot. I've been golfing for less than a year and at the beginning, I would usually hook the ball on misses but I was fairly consistent and it felt natural. In the pursuit of more speed and and fixing my hook, I learned a completely different swing, which frankly still doesn't feel natural to me and I've started hitting slices now on my misses, but when I do hit it well, it goes really far. Looking back, it was probably a mistake and I would like my old swing back but I had no idea how I actually swung it when I just did it naturally. Now at least I have some pointers.

I'm a natural lefty that plays right handed golf. I always pulled through the ball, with my timing, strength and club face awareness in my left hand and forearm. Now in my 70's age wise, I would say I have become a thrower because I just don't have the leg strength any more. One worked great when younger and the other came about ten years ago as I got older. Great video, this should help a lot of players.

I was a puller. Just 10 yards off Dan Pohl’s 274 of -I forget what year- PGA record year.
At 63, I overhauled my swing to the Mike Austin method but even just before, I started to think why let my clumsy left control the clubhead.
MA throws with the right. But also flings a frisbee with the left. Hogan said he wanted three right hands. Bobby said left arm control but studying his videos, I detect a powerful right hand release.
I’m all about right hand control in this ageless debate. Austin saw Tiger at his Masters debut and said that his body won’t last; sure enough, Tiger’s body is wrecked. Austin was hitting 300+ through his 70s until his stroke.
    Great video, btw and thanks.

Would be great if people starting out in golf were given this choice to make. Then they would know which instruction was right for them.

I realised I'm a thrower today randomly on the course...
Figured out i was snatching at the handle of the club...
Downswing now feels really long and slow and feels like it takes ages to get to the ball, almost like a long slow cast of the club. so much time to square everything off. Your correct about the hooking though, threw a couple of hooks on the driver, but somehow knew instantly what I'd done where before I would be guessing...but contact was pure and gained 10 yards almost instantly with what felt like zero effort, With a fizzing sound as the ball left...

I'm learning the Mike Austin swing... from what I understand, the 'throw' starts from the very top...

Mike, how does this concept of being a "puller" or a "thrower" square with the concepts you've talked about from David Lee in Gravity Golf? It seems like you'd have to be a "thrower" to be tension free. Is that right? Also, what concepts from Gravity Golf do you agree with and how have you adapted those into your teaching? Thanks for your help!

So Manuel De La Torre preached that throwing concept and I really gelled with his book/videos without knowing that’s what it was. As I’ve tried working on drawing the ball more and coming more inside out I’ve noticed a lot more of the pulling concept occurring and it’s been more difficult for me. It’s nice to hear these two concepts defined and I’m definitely going back to being a thrower before this season begins!

This video can be a bit misleading because the pulling motion sounds like it might have a lot of tension. But top players never swing with tension. They all feel the weight of the club head. They all try to deliver it to the ball with correct sequencing and rotation. They certainly don't cast the club like he was doing.

In the Golfing Machine a Thrower is a Right Arm Swinger. In addition to this video, checkout the videos by Tony Luczak. An awesome right arm swinging instructor.

    A great video, and you're the first person I've seen address this. Please do a follow-up video for us 3rd type players, the "hit n hopers." (;

Thank you! Started as a junior player pulling every swing but now nearing 60 It just hurts my body. About time to just throw and be good in my short game. Thanks again

Really eye opening, would love to see you do pull swing with right arm and throw with left arm, that would be worth watching. Very illuminating. Thank you.

Are you keeping your hips quiet on the backswing and how do you get the right arm used to being dominant

  • @mikerodrick2430
    @mikerodrick2430 Рік тому

Nearly everyone talks about getting your legs ahead of the ball with forward shaft lean & keeping your head behind the ball to hit the ball 1st for solid contact. If you're a puller, should your forward arm dominate & a thrower should be trail side dominant?

I feel its a combo of both. I am a thrower but you gotta keep that left arm back (taught) and not get ahead of it until after impact.

David Knighton, a pro at Southern Woods at Homosassa. Florida was a definite thrower. He could hit the ball close to 300 yards with his right hand on the driver only. He showed me how to do it but it was not for me.
