Vince sings like an angel. He used to be in a group called Pure Prairie League (hit song Amy in the 70s, just for reference). He's also an excellent player, but, I get the impression, he's never sung a flat note in his life. Everything I ever heard from the 70s, to present, is impeccable.

Since this song was released, it's been played at thousands of funerals. Vince has personally sang it at the funerals of multiple celebrities. When his mentor, George Jones passed away, he tried extremely hard to perform it. He broke down in the middle, but Patti Loveless was preforming with him, and kept it moving along, until Vince got himself gathered back up, a little. If touching, emotional moments are a thing that makes you proud of humanity, it's a good video to watch.

Vince wrote this song in tribute to two people.
He started writing this song when his good friend, Keith Whitley, died from alcohol poisoning. The line 'no stranger to the rain' is the title to one of Keith's songs.
Keith is from my hometown: Sandy Hook, Elliott County Kentucky. I know his whole family and went to school with many of them.
It's fitting that Ricky Skaggs is a backing vocal. Ricky is from the next county over and he and Keith got their start playing bluegrass with Ralph Stanley.
The other tribute is to his brother. Vince finished it after his brother passed.

Vince Gill is the writer and composer of this song, and sang it at George Jones' funeral - whose body was in the closed casket down front. (George Jones helped Vince get his career started, and nicknamed Vince “Sweet Pea” ). George had struggled with alcohol and drugs for several years before he became a Christian and sobered up, and Vince had a half-brother who had struggled with alcohol and drugs and died in 1993 in his 50s of a massive heart attack. In fact, because George's wife was a Christian and helped him and loved him all through the struggles, George - in a prayer one night - told God that if God would help him he would give up the vices - and he did. According to George's wife, when George died, he had been in the hospital for five days, of which George had been in a comma the last three. George had just laid with his eyes closed and never said a word. Then, as George's wife and his doctor stood at the foot of the hospital bed, George opened his eyes, looked at the ceiling and said, "I've been looking for you. I'm George Jones", and then died. George's wife says she knows George was talking to God. Vince had written this song for his brother after his brother's death, and that's why it is so special to Vince. Patty Loveless was a good friend to both, and was there to help Vince get through the song. The song is about The mountain ( Heaven ) that his brother had to climb.

I found it interesting that you each had different opinions about whether the song was sad. To me, that is because it encapsulates the conflicting feelings you can have when someone passes away who had a hard or painful life. You miss them, and are sad they are gone, but at the same time you are relieved that they are at peace and out of pain. My mother passed a few years ago. She struggled with severe mental illness her whole life. This song really captures my ambivalent feelings about it. It's

That is one of the few times I have seen Vince sing this song without breaking down. Vince started this song years ago when his friend and country/bluegrass star Keith Whitley died. Vince couldn't finish it then. Then when his brother passed he did finish it. There is a video of Vince and the great singer Patty Loveless doing this song at a memorial for George Jones after he passed and Vince couldn't keep it together. Patty got him through it. I am leaving you links to 2 vids of Patty and her great band doing a couple songs from a concert of theirs. A bit about Vince. He for a couple years was the frontman and guitar player for a band called Pure Prairie league. They had a number of hits including Aimee. Also when the Eagles got together to do a short tour a couple years back they asked Vince to join them both for his vocals and his guitar playing. Great choice and great reaction y'all. Justin you are a lucky guy. You're wife is beautiful, and insightful. Here are those links. One is a sort of sad story song and the other is a lighthearted upbeat tune. Hope you enjoy. ua-cam.com/video/1n57WBtvtC4/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/Nj67hHp5GQ0/v-deo.html PS If you guys saw the movie Oh Brother Where Art Thou with George Clooney, you heard Alison Krauss. @@brianbrekke9500 In fact I have heard Vince tell the story about starting it for Keith and being unable to cope with the emotions and finish it. Then when his brother passed he summoned the will to complete it. Also here is the Wiki blurb on the song. - "Go Rest High on That Mountain" is a song written and recorded by American country music artist Vince Gill. It was released in August 1995 as the sixth single from his album When Love Finds You. It is a eulogic ballad. Gill began writing the song following the death of country music singer Keith Whitley in 1989. Gill did not finish the song until a few years later following the death of his older brother Bob of a heart attack in 1993. - Important thing is it's a great song and tribute. HAGD!

A lot of people mentioned how he sang this at George Jones' memorial. But that makes me think about how Charlie Daniel's was also there at that memorial. Charlie witnessed him perform it, and Charlie himself gave and awesome eulogy and performed.
Then roughly over a year ago, I happen to stumble upon the livestream to Charlie Daniel's memorial, and I watched Vince perform this song by himself with the guitar. He didn't break down that time.

Ricky Skaggs is a great picker.. He apparently was like a child prodigy, and got to perform live with the legends, Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe, when he was 7 years old. There's a video of it.
Then there's a video from nearly a decade ago of Ricky Skaggs performing with a little 10 year old boy named, Carson Peters, at the Grand Ole Opry. A talented little boy who had been playing the violin for 6 years. The boy was a fan of the late Bill Monroe, and they performed Bill Monroe's song called "Blue Moon of Kentucky".
It was like a weird but cool moment, for me as a viewer, to witness how things came full circle with that situation after all those years.
If you want to see some crazy guitar picking by Ricky Skaggs on an acoustic, "Country Boy" is a song to check out.. Other instruments get in on the solos as well.

As a fan of both Bluegrass and Alison Krauss, I do have to admit to liking those 2 albums that Alison and Robert did together. The first album about 14 years ago won them both a few Grammy awards.
These are 3 superstars in the Country/Bluegrass world, and the two that are singing harmony are not trying to upstage the lead singer.
It is sad in the fact that somebody died after a very hard life. His brother did struggle with drugs in his life.

Country music and bluegrass are steeped in the southern Christian tradition, with gospel and other art forms threaded throughout. At least country music up until about 2012, before that time songs about faith, and the human condition were very common. Vince wrote this song.
Like he said in honor of the passing of his brother, but also as a solemn nod to the late great Keith Whitley who passed away shortly after, that's where the line "you were no stranger to the rain." Comes in. I certainly hope that your understanding of the song resonates, I see it is both a sad song, but a song of hope and understanding that for those of us who call ourselves Christians, we know that our bodies may die, but our spirit will go to be with the Lord.
Certainly can understand people's comments on here about being ambivalent a little bit, the for that is the nature of being human and being unsure. But understand that with the context that this song was written, he is looking forward to celebrating with his brother, with Keith and so many others that have gone on. Certainly look forward to more of your videos as you have gained a subscriber today.

Now listen how this Gill does this song he doesn't perfectly he doesn't try to blow it out the park like Carrie Underwood tries to do I feel it when Vince Gill singing it I feel it through my heart with Alison krauss backup and Ricky skaggs you couldn't get the best two people to back you up cuz Alison krauss's a great backup singer. But the original is Patty loveless but you still couldn't get a better backup singer than Alison what I'm trying to say here is when Carrie Underwood perform the song I just listened to it I didn't even recognize the song. Until she got to the course. And then she's trying to blow out the lyrics, go listen to Vince Gill's version after listening to Carrie Underwood you'll see what I'm talking
