Vince started writing this song after the death of his good friend Keith Whitley, a fellow singer. He didn't finish it until a few years later when his own brother suddenly died of a heart attack. It's a dedication to both of them, which is why he gets so emotional when he sings it. It's one of the most played songs at funerals today.

He said in a podcast that it was hearing Patty sing that broke him up. Then he had to play the guitar solo to get himself together. They've been singing together for years and the blend of their voices is something special. And they were both close with George Jones. Jones' nickname for Vince was Sweet Pea, if that tells you anything about his personality. Also, Vince wrote this song about his brother, after he passed. So, there was a lot of emotion rushing at him in this moment.

The instrumental guitar solo wasn't planned, it was Vince's way of trying to get ahold of himself again and the band just kept playing along. Patty is worthy of her own set of reactions, one of the greats. Her song You'll Never Leave Harlan alive is amazing, Chris Stapleton actually called her up after she's virtually retired and asked her to sing with him in a charity concert and she answered that call, they are both Kentucky natives and they sang it together. Also, keep the Kleenex handy but her song How Can I Help You Say Goodbye is worth the reaction too. Patty has sang harmony and backup for Vince many times even though she is a star in her own right, including it is her vocals on his song When I Call Your Name.

Patty Loveless is one of the most incredibly talented singers on planet earth. She’s incredible. And anyone who doesn’t have a great deal of respect for her after watching that performance wasn’t paying attention. One of the most heartfelt & emotional things I’ve ever seen, it gives me chills every time, & I’ve seen it many times. Check out Patty’s LIVE version of “you’ll never leave Harlan alive” you won’t be disappointed.

I’ve always loved Vince and this just shows how much of a man he is! George was a legend in country music and paved the way for younger artists like Vince. I applaud Vince because most men would be embarrassed by their emotions and try to get away but Vince didn’t even think about apologizing for his tears and just kept trying to power through it. I appreciate that Patty did a great job of letting him know she had his back. He could have easily told her to just take it over so he could not let people see how he was feeling!

Knowing Vince wrote this song for his brother, then hearing hearing him singing it for a dear friend and country legend!! I wouldn't make it through half of what he did. One of the reasons I absolutely love your channel is the fact that you feel music! Music is a language. Sometimes it gets us moving, sometimes it tells a story. With this particular song, it's saying goodbye to someone near and dear to the heart. How can you possibly sing those words?! Every time I hear it, it crushes my heart.

This song always gets me. It was released in August of 1995. My favorite uncle (my dad's brother) died in a car accident a few months earlier, in May of 1995. When this song came over, I had to pull into a gas station parking lot because I was crying so hard; it just hit me in that moment and all these years later, it still does.
In this performance, to honor George Jones, you can tell how much George meant to him, to all of them and how he influenced their music.
As for Patty, oh let me tell you, she has a long playlist that will blow you away.
"How Can I Help You Say Goodbye"
    "Blame It On Your Hear"
"You Don’t Even Know Who I Am" (I would say this is my favorite by her and it's one of those songs that so many people can relate to)
    "Timber I’m Falling In Love"
Those are just a few suggestions, I'm sure others will have more, but she has a remarkable voice.

Also a good intro to bluegrass. "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" is also amazing. Vince started writing this song after the death of musician Keith Whitley, and finished it after the death of his own brother. That's a ton of emotional weight to carry. This was done at the funeral of George Jones, who was a huge legend, and mentor to Vince. But he wrote this song a a tribute to Keith Whitley who died in the late 80's, and to his brother, what had also passed.

Bob Coen was involved in a fatal car wreck in 1968 when he was 22 years old. At the time, Vince Gill was just 11 years of age. The wreck caused Bob to go into a coma for 3 months.
When he woke up from the coma his brain was damaged beyond medical repair. The damage to his brain led to him exiling himself from friends and family till his eventual death in 1993.

    Britt!! Britt!! Britt!! Nice one.
George Jones was HUGE back in the day and he took a lot of young artists under his wings and helped them get into Country Music. Vince Gill of course being one of them. Vince Gill is one of the most amazing guitar players out there.

George Jones atoned for the sins of his early years. Along with his enormous talent, this endeared him to millions of folks and many fellow musicians. He showed great humility and humanity. I know that you saw these qualities in him in several of your prior reactions. I took my 2 daughters to one of his shows in the mid-eighties. What a talent! after his redemption, he used to open his shows with a tune called "No Show Jones". He was able to poke fun at himself and it was a hilariously good song. There a couple of live versions of the song on youtube. I know you would enjoy it. He was truly one of a kind....thanks for your part in keeping his memory alive! 🥰

I appreciate the insightful reactions you share in your postings. Vince Gill is the product of generations of Appalachian musicians and typifies the “high, lonesome sound” of vocalists that perform at the upper registers of the vocal range. Check out the Carter family or the Monroe brothers for a sample of that mountain style. Great job.

Im so glad you reacted to this! Vince and Alison Kraus and Ricky Scaggs sang it at the Met and it was good to have those talented artists back him up there too - although he was not as emotionally challenged for that one - aweome performances. I've been suggesting my favorite reactors to tackle this one for some time - thank you!

Good morning, beautiful, precious Britt. I've seen this so many times that I knew when I pushed play at 6 a.m. I would be starting my morning crying. Now if I can get the red out before I go to church I'll be good. Britt, Vince is married to the incredible Christian singer Amy Grant. She does secular and non-secular music and has the voice of an angel. If ever her name starts popping up in your request I think you'll enjoy her. Thank you for a lovely reaction and you, too, go have the kind of day you deserve, a truly Blessed one. 💐

This was at George Jones' funeral. Vince had written this song about Vince's brother who died of drug and alcohol abuse. Patty Loveless is a longtime friend and collaborator of Vince's, and fellow Hall of Famer Loveless's first marriage was to Terry Lovelace in 1973 , drummer for the Wilburn Brothers,. After marrying him, she altered her surname to Loveless. Loveless has been married to Emory Gordy Jr, an American musician, songwriter and music producer, since 1989.
