George Jones was a huge friend and mentor to Vince Gill, that guitar solo he did wasn't planned, he just needed the time to collect himself to finish. That first person you saw standing up was Garth Brooks, another huge country artist, but you probably won't be able to do reactions to his songs, but you can at least listen to them. Him mentioning "they don't make those shoes anymore" is a reference to a George Jones song "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes?", I do recommend watching the video to that.
Anytime anyone has done a “Garth Brooks” video on UA-cam.. comments that are people that know Garths voice.. including myself- can tell it’s a cover singer- I don’t know if they specifically hired someone to do that or what.. cuz it doesn’t even say that it’s a cover.. the guy singing isn’t too bad.. but definitely not Garth- .. and if familiar with GB, you can pick up on it.. and it’s frustrating because the reactors have no clue.. of course- they’re not familiar.. so yeah.. I know Garth has been BIG about copywrite for a loooong time-
This version just kills me every time. Love the way Patty was their for him, also Garth and Trisha standing up in the audience as a way of saying I Got You.
Every single time I see this video, my eyes burn with tears ----- The heartfelt sorrow Vince can't restrain is so touching; and bless Patty for carrying it like she did 💞
This performance touches me on so many levels and for so many reasons. One of the touching things about it is how Patty rallies to support Vince until he can gather himself. Strength and total class.
I was awestruck by Patti's seamless transition from backup vocalist to lead, and the band's effortless ability to keep playing and give Vince the time he needed to compose himself. It was a display of absolute professionalism. But when Garth Brooks and the others stood in solidarity, I was moved to tears; it was a truly remarkable show of camaraderie among artists.
Much kudos has to go out to Patty on this she really held the song together when her friend was struggling. It shows what a true professional she is that she was able to keep up with all the breaks. This is always a beautiful song but this is such a touching performance.
He actually wrote this for his brother that had passed. I think that's where most of the emotion comes from. What a good friend Patty Lovelace is to watch him & know what he needed. She backed him up, supported him, carried when he needed. You don't find that everyday.
In the south I hear this at every funeral and I can't listen to it without crying. Played it at my own grandfather's funeral and its just has such a beautiful sense of healing in the song. It feels like it's okay to just release. Love this song.
This is heartbreaking to watch. So evident how much Vince loved George. You should watch it again, the version with Vince at the Grand Ole Opry to hear how amazing his voice is and just how beautiful this song is.
I have watched this version each and every night for months on end. The human emotions displayed by both Vince and Patty are overwhelming and allows me to understand the complete compassion Vince had for Keith Whitley and his won brother who passed away and for who Vince wrote this song. Patty does a remarkable job in helping Vince get through this and she is a true angel. I love them both.
The Southern Appalachians is an epicenter for beautiful talent...Patty Loveless, Loretta Lynn, Ricky Skaggs, Chris Stapleton, Crystal Gayle, Dolly Parton, Bluegrass Gospel group The Isaacs and of course the legendary Carter Family all trace their bloodlines back to Eastern Kentucky/Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.
Best version ever of this song. I love how their love for George shines through. We played this at my Dad's memorial service. Vince's guitar solo is magical
This was written about Vince's older brother that passed away also about Keith Whitley his brother in music. George was like a father to both Vince and Patty. You should react to Lead me home by Jamey Johnson. This was held at the mother church of country music The Rynan Auditorium
When you held up that empty tissue box I knew you were in for a tough ride. Bless Patty for helping him to hold it together. So many great Vince songs I hope you can find your way to some others.
In an auditorium filled with the stars and legends of all country music, when your peers rise to their feet before the song ends, you have struck that sacred chord internal to all country music lovers.
Tears every time I watch and that’s a lot of times. I look at his guitar solo as him not really composing himself (respect to the presenter) but more it was Vince just letting go. As a stone cold guitar player he was able to let his fingers and his soul do what his voice wasn’t allowing. Thank you for your video
In the world of Country Music, George Jones was the most highly regarded singer of all time. To most country stars, and country fans, George Jones WAS country music. He was it's biggest ambassador.
Greetings from Ireland just love Vince Gill and his beautiful duets been a fan for 40 years God bless you lovely kind caring. gentleman you bring comfort to millions with your hauntingly beautiful songs and glorious voice hope you soon come back to 🇮🇪 🙏🤲❤️🌹🇮🇪☘️🌹
If this song doesn’t bring tears to your eyes you have to be a cold heartless individual. Vince originally wrote this song for his brother and another country music artist Keith Whitley. This is from George Jones’ memorial which is part of why Vince is so emotional as George had been a mentor to him in country music.
I love these two. Patty is one of my favorite singers. Still hoping you will listen to Kathy Mattea’s “Where’ve You Been?” I hate to sound like a broken record but I KNOW you will love it. It was written by her husband about his grandparents. So good.
He did that impromptu guitar solo as a way to pull himself together. And the rest of the band and Patti Lovelace helped him through it. I can't watch this video without crying every single time
Vince Gill wrote this after he lost his brother. I lost my twin brother 4 years ago and my oldest brother last summer. This song kills me every time I hear it, but still I listen
Patti Loveless. Classic old school/new school. She's the queen. "Timber I'm Falling". "You Can Feel Bad (If it Makes You Feel Better". Either one or many others.
Please react to Patty Lovelace You'll never leave Harlan alive. Her voice is amazing! There is a video and also her singing it live. She has a bunch of good songs
Vince originally started writing this song after the death of country star Keith Whitley. In the first verse where he says you were no stranger to the rain was a reference to the Keith Whitley song I'm no stranger to the Rain. Vince finished the song 4 years later after his brother died from a heart attack.
He hardly couldn't even sing his own song without tearing up for George Jones! In the Country music world a lot of artists are real friends with one another!
"You weren't afraid to face the devil" and "you were no stranger to the rain", are references to songs by Keith Whitley, whom this song was originally about. Then Vince's brother died and was dedicated to him instead. I don't think he's crying for George Jones alone but for all three of them at once.
I don't know Vince or Patty or The Late George Jones, but I have heard that Vince was very close with George. The strength it took for him to even walk on the stage that day is unimaginable. I saw a video where Garth Brooks actually denied a chance to sing at George's funeral for fear that he wouldn't be able to do it. George Jones was a HUGE favorite for all of us old country music fans...
George and Vince were super close. This is so beautiful yet heart wrenching. I definitely believe with Patty being there for him helped immensely. I played this and Amazing Grace when My Dad was laid to rest.😭☝🏻❤️🙌🏻
Oh no,,,After Watching you react to Dwight Yoakam, Now your going to cry. I want this played at my Funeral. Vince wrote this song for Keith Whitley after he passed away way to early. Keith is another artist you will love. Vince never finished the song until his own Brother passed away a few years later so the song has a lot of grieving in it for him. Patty Loveless sang this with him but has dozens of her own hits also.
Vince Gill has so many great duets with some of the most power women in country, besides this one he also has great songs with they likes of Dolly Parton and Reba and more
I don't know how Patty kept it together. But as everyone said George was like a father figure to everyone in that room, and a brother to those his age.
First time seeing that video and listening to that song. Had me thinking of my own father that passed some years ago. Tearing up at work is never fun, especially for a 48 year old man. Thank you for this reaction and others. Your Country Reactions playlist brought me here. I may need more tissue
I wish i could talk to vince and patty my grandpa and grandma were married 65 years when they past away 8 years ago and this was their number 1 song and we played it at both their funneral's i hope i''m lucky to find love like what they had some day and i'm 40
Keith Whitley's death rocked the country music community, including his friend Vince Gill. Gill began writing "Go Rest High on That Mountain" after Whitley's death and finished the tune four years later, when Gill's brother passed away from a heart attack. 💔
This song is very special to me today is my little brothers birthday and this is the song that makes me cry sense I have to be the one that is strong and cry on my own thank you so much this song means so much to people that you cant even imagine to those that have lost someone.
@@TeddyswimsMusicxx Sorry, no. Have never had the occasion to go to one, but would love to sometime. Very few stars of your caliber make it to western IL near Quincy, IL.
Tasha, Vince started this song years ago when country singer Keith Whitley died. He was not able to finish it. A few years back Vince's brother died, and he finished it for him. He rarely ever gets through it when he performs it. Patty fought through her own tears and held it up. She is amazing as well. You should listen to more of her too.
Patty Loveless sang on Vince Gill's first album as he sang on her first album. They're very good friends. Please check out "When I Call Your Name". Patty is in this song.
I've been a fan of Vince Gills for the longest time. Check out his earlier works when he was with Pure Prairie League There is a live you tube video of him performing the song 'Aimee'. He is currently a touring member of The Eagles.
one of the most emotional performance in country music history i still cant watch it without crying like a baby. The story behind all of it is movie worthy and God bless Vince for holding it together as well as he did. RIP Possum we all miss you boss.
I have one rule I always follow. When Vince Gill cries, I cry! The last part of just the instrumentation, when Vince was playing his guitar alone wasn't planned. The band knew Vince needed that time to compose himself.
Just to let you know. Vince Gill started crying because this video is at the funeral of his friend & country singer George Jones. When the people first started standing you can see the casket. Vince originally wrote this song in tribute to his own brother.
He originally wrote it for Keith Whitley ( one of his best friends) & had trouble finishing it. Then his brother died & he finished it.
Yes thank you so much Tom Robertson. Have you been to any of my concert ?
@@maritamcnichol8849 I hadn't heard that, but that explains the Keith Whitley reference in the first verse. Very interesting.
@@maritamcnichol8849 You got it right.
First verse was for singer Keith Whitley, the 2md verse was for Vince's brother.

Patty has a lot of great music herself. If interested, start with either "How Can I Help You Say Goodbye" or "You Don't Even Know Who I Am."
Her rendition of “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive.”
