This is why this is so believable to me. I was sexually abused by my father ages 4-9. My mother blamed me for it so badly I decided to pretend I didn’t remember the abuse.
I kept the secret for 35 years. Until one day an astute friend asked me why I talked about how much I hated my mother but I never mentioned my father. I was shaking so badly while I told her the truth. I wrote a blog post about how hard it was to keep secrets and maybe if I hadn’t been keeping this big family secret it would be easier. One of my aunts saw the post and sent my other aunt to talk to me. Turns out my father did the same thing to her and MY MOTHER KNEW ABOUT IT. She said my mother was angry with her. Which means my mother knew my father was a pedophile BEFORE she married him, married him anyway, and had daughters with him.
Mothers do this. They need to keep that man so much they will sacrifice their own children to do it.

For years I had a rage that would burn for a short period and then I would simply mentally push it down and act like a fully normal kid. I was sexually abused most of my childhood by an older male cousin. And I'm a male. I told my multiple family members and no one believed me and they literally acted like they didn't hear me or act like I never told them or that I'm making it up. They still continued to invite that cousin to family functions and that I was at and never ever had my back or said anything about it. I literally feel some days that maybe it didn't happen and maybe I'm making it up in my head. But I know for a fact it happened at have very very vivid memories of it. But still to this day no one believes me or has done anything. And it's one of the main reasons I've had a horrible opioid addiction my whole life and have attempted suicide multiple times. I feel for these brothers and for everyone who was SA by a close family member or by anyone period. 20 years later Im still haunted by it.

I read your comment. I believe you. What you described about doubting your memory is known as gaslighting. I hope you are doing better and can overcome your addiction. You deserve to live a happier, peaceful life. Suicide is not the answer. You didn't abuse anyone and shouldn't punish yourself. You are innocent. For your own mental well-being it would be best to avoid , if possible, family gatherings where that cousin is likely to be. Also I think it might be beneficial for you if you got some sort of counselling. Best wishes for your future. ❤

I'm a woman and I'm 62. This happened to me by someone in my family. I never told anyone until I was 27...I actually "forgot" about it for 15 years. (It's fascinating what the mind can do to protect oneself).
But I grew up believing in God and I know that is why I am at peace and have forgiven what happened to me. Jesus forgives me for my sins and I forgive those who have sinned against me. I am FREE!
There is a peace beyond understanding and I pray that you would reach out to God and ask Him to help you to heal. It IS possible. Sending love to you my friend.

My "father" physically, psychologically, mentally and verbally abused me, my 4 siblings and our mother. From ages 4-12, he sexually abused me. He stopped sexually abusing me when I grew big enough to fight him off. It's during this time I suspect he began sexually abusing one of my sisters, who has become a transgender male.
People have no idea how traumatizing it is to divulge this abuse, only to be told what was said to me by my mom when at age 12, I finally told her about the abuse.
Her response was "get out of here you liar ". This was as devastating as the sexual abuse.
This kind of abuse wounds the spirit, soul and mind. It does horrible, horrible damage.
I believe these brothers. They had every right to unalive any monster who abused them in this way. If the mother knew, as mine and millions of other mothers do, but turn a blind eye in denial, the mother is just as guilty.

Their explanations of abuse do not explain why they shot the mother 15 times. They already had a fair trial. The parents were UNARMED when the sons killed them. The alleged past abuse is not a legal self-defense argument. The abuse is a one sided story. Sometimes predators do not go after the main star because they are too famous or the main star is being abused by someone above Jose's level so Jose might have backed off if Ricky's abuser was Jose's boss, etc. Also, it is Ricky's story to tell when Ricky is ready to since Ricky would have been an abuse victim. As a former large city police officer, we take EVERY sexual assault allegation seriously, no matter how many years ago it was. I can say it took great pleasure in putting several family assailant in prison. One young man stabbed his father after years of abuse. At 18, his father stopped and turned his attention to his younger brothers. He did what he did to protect them from the same abuse.

Myleftmitten - My brother savagely had physically assaulted his wife for decades until he finally murdered her.
Their adult son, my nephew, walked into my brother's house and beat him until he ended up in the hospital.
Many of my family thought this was horrible. I don't see it in the same manner. My nephew snapped and had enough. His beloved mother died a horrendous death after decades of misery.
While I don't condone such violent behavior, I empathize with my nephew's lifetime of pain due to his father's alcoholism and wicked violence.

Lyle testified he discussed killing the parents with Erik days before they killed them. Thus, there is no justification for them killing Kitty Menendez! Whether or not they were abused as children is irrelevant by the law when they killed their parents as adults. That is retaliation NOT self-defense, especially against the mother. The parents were unarmed! There was a stack of college applications next to Kitty that Erik testified she had filled out! Whatever happened to a sa victim just moving on and going to college and moving on with their life? There is no legal justification for retaliation murders. Retaliation is not the right choice and unfortunately the evidence proves the parents were unarmed at the time of abuse and the brothers' testimonies do not provide justification for killing Kitty.

Considering what we know now, they would not have gotten nearly the sentence they did.

Retaliation killings never work out in the best interests of the abuse victims. @@cjking4511 In law, there are such things as mitigating circumstances in sentencing. Lifelong SA by one's parents is one such mitigating circumstance. That can even be taken into consideration when your parents aren't the victim. It might not get you very far if the victim was someone other than your parents( your spouse or a randomly targeted person), but even in those cases, a defendant is well within their rights to argue it. And the judge or jury imposing sentence is within their rights to consider it when making their decision. These days I believe it's more likely than not that such consideration would have gotten the brothers a lesser sentence than life.

The woman (I think one of the attorneys) speaking against the brothers and partially denying there was ever abuse..... WAS NOT ABUSED herself, so she has no understanding of what it does to a person. She asks, "Why didn't they tell BEFORE?" I was abused sexually as a very young girl. There are threats that come with that abuse. I never told. It only came out when one of my brothers -- out of spite -- told my parents 35 years later, and THAT was the beginning of the break down of our family. I would NEVER have told my parents. In order to protect my PARENTS, not the offender.

@@misskay8131 Lyle did ask specific people to lie for him. Those being two of his ex girlfriends and one of Erik's friends. However much of that comes from long before the first trial started and one of them who testified for the prosecution did say that Lyle had called him during the first trial and told him to drop everything. In one of these letters he sent to Erik's friend he insinuates that his lawyers have no idea and that Erik would rat him out and that's exactly what happened. This witness never testified during the first trial because Erik had told his lawyers that the persons story wasn't true. Lyle certainly made some bad decisions while in jail (since he never wanted to talk about the abuse) but that doesn't mean their defense was fabricated. None of those people were ever asked to lie about abuse and if this was such a common thing you'd fully expect to see a whole lot people coming out and saying "Lyle asked me to lie for him" but no one else ever has. You don't have to take him at his word but Lyle has said he only did this prior to agreeing to talk about the abuse himself. According to him, his lawyers and his family he was refusing to testify about the abuse for a very long time.

You really think that you're going to go over to somebody's house that's accused of the above mentioned and they're going to just do it right out in front of you!??! because you know it's just normal behavior?? no really that's the most ignorant response to me ever.

There were other young men who also reported that he had molested them. I believe the boys. Their responses are so typical of having been molested. The shame and embarrassment will do it every time. They didn't want anyone to know. That is also why they didn't mention it immediately. I would be suspicious if they had been talking about it to everyone, that would be atypical behavior.

I followed this case very diligently when it was being broadcast on Court TV. I felt then, as I do now, that the brothers should have been convicted of voluntary manslaughter. I remember watching the trial in the student lounge @ university. Other students kept wanting to change the channel on the TV, but I prevailed and kept watching it. This was before the OJ case and the ascension of courtroom drama.

I am so happy to hear that there are a lot of people on social media supporting these boys. In generations past, it was common for people to blame children not the parents when they didn’t behave the way they were supposed to. Hopefully we’re coming to a realization as a society about the parents responsibility in their children’s lives, and their children’s behavior.
