  • My family and I drove down to the Piney River in Middle Tennessee to spend a day on the river! We took out the drone and got some awesome footage, caught a bunch of really nice smallmouth bass and rock bass, and had a great day spending time together with family in the great outdoors. The Piney River is a gorgeous spring fed river that is crystal clear and the water is cold - very refreshing to wade! It holds some giant smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and rock bass. I tried several lures - Rebel Craw crainkbait, Bomber Fat A crankbait, Z-Man 3.5 inch white swimbaits and Bass Pro Shop + Nikko Hellgrammites. I tend to use Hellgrammites A LOT, but only because they produce fish when nothing else will!

That pb rock bass was a MEGA trophy! In the state of Tennessee rock bass over 10in are a trophy fish. Not only was that one well over trophy length but it was very heavy!

Thanks for watching Better Days! The Piney River and the little tributary creek that runs into it near Pinewood Canoe and Camp holds some HUGE rock bass. Let's go walk these creeks one of these days Richard!

Killer vid!!! I’m currently camping at the Piney for the winter. We have a camper at the Piney River Resort. What do you recommend bait wise? K caught some small smallies today with a yellow roostertail. Seen some giants though. Easily 4-5lb smallmouth and some bigger largemouths.

I caught my best fish on the Piney using a soft plastic hellgramite rigged on a light weight ned rig. Natural presentation and its what they're used to eating! Good luck!

I will be wading the Piney very soon. Thanks for the video! Btw, barbless single hooks make it more challenging and less traumatic on the fish! I only use barbs on fish I intend to eat.

If I travel there, where can I park to go wade fishing on the river. I thought I saw a campground on the video. I've never caught a smallmouth but I've been researching everything about it and watching videos. Any help is appreciated. I live several hours from this river, but I would like to take a tent up there and fish a couple of days. Can I camp near where you fished?

The Piney River is surrounded by private property - the only place to park or camp and get wading access is a place called Pinewood Canoe & Camp. You can pay to park for the day or camp, and you can wade the river and its tributary creeks all day/night long. The river is filled with Smallmouth and Rock Bass (some easily over the state trophy size of 10"). Some of the tributaries that feed the river are also stocked with Rainbow Trout during the winter months and some make their way into the Piney River. It is a spring fed river so the water temps stay nice and cool all year long. Good luck!
