Kayak Fishing for Smallmouth on the Gasconade River, Missouri

- MoYak River Series Championship held on the Gasconade River. Several of us fished an eight mile stretch I'm very familiar with just south of Waynesville.
4” paddle tail on a jig head absolutely crushes everything on this river! Born and raised, still fishing it to this day.
I have fished that stretch. Loved it.
What is the name of the access point where they put In at?
This fellow was too much in love with that buzz bait early on. Unless they were really blowing up on it I would have ditched it early on. I grew up in that country and did a lot of fishing on the Big Piney, the Gasconade's major tributary. If I'd have been fishing there I would have tried a weightless Yamamoto Senko. I would have thrown it up in the faster water and let it wash down into the heads of the holes. Although this fellow fished a lot of good water, he paddled through some of those shoals I would have fished. I usually paddled through the longer, deeper holes and concentrated on the areas adjacent to the shoals or the smaller, swifter pools. I did like the fact he that later on he threw a jig into that deeper cover in or near current. He had better success when he did that. In fact, I would have been fishing that stuff and paddled through some of the water he was fishing.
The accuracy of that cast at 4:32 is dam impressive!

Personally the baits that have worked on the river for me is a 3 inch largo shad swimbait or a zoom 4 inch lizard Texas rigged.
Where did ya put in at? Gasconade is awesome.
I fished that river for smallmouth all my life and never saw a game warden.
Great videos great kayak watch for one on your trolling motor on the ascend was wondering if you could describe to me what the fitting looks like is it round at the bottom and did you have to screw it to mount it and did you use the regular shaft that you got off the trolling motor to attach the head to the fitting

nice vid. looked like the smallies slept in. you ever use trailer hooks on buzz baits?
I use trailer hooks on the my bigger buzzbaits. The plastic gets caught up a lot in the trailer hooks on the smaller buzzbaits. If you trim down the plastic enough typically a trailer hook is not needed.

more natural baits will get you more fish, plus that retrieve is way too fast. What's considered a big smallie down there?
Nah, that's the proper retrieve for that bait. You anger them into striking with the noise and don't give them much time to decide.
@@IndianaSmallmouth Nope. You don't "anger" smallies. Fish don't "decide" they react. I've caught literally thousands of smallies.
