@@OlikGer I think you might be right because it is so like Slater to gaslight Lucas into believing he was just as bad as the rest of the men when he might've been a victim too. Slater was good at gaslighting, he kept doing it to the girls by asking them "Are you having a good time?" and they all had to reassure him by saying "Yeah I'm having a great time!" It was also a way to check that the girls were forgetting what was happening to them and would eventually not remember at all. Then, when Frida was bound up in front of him and he was screaming "I'm sorry" in her face, the scene played off as if he thought HE was the victim because she wouldn't forgive him. He acted as if he was doing the girls such this huge favor by making them forget. He truly was a heinous character. But it was played off in an unserious way.
@yes!!! He was also being given the perfume (maybe in a different form?), because in the r@pe memory scene, you see him with one of the men!! I need to rewatch, but when they show all the victims tied up with their partners, you see two men!! He didn’t remember because he didn’t get the venom that the women were giving out. So that’s why he’s apologizing for the men’s behaviour, he didn’t “know”. I thought his character was great as a symbol for the men that see what’s happening but chose not to say or do anything to protect themselves and keep the wheel of patriarchy spinning.
I need to rewatch…. But I swear in the r@pe scene I noticed they showed all of the victims with their predators…including two men!!? So yes he was a victim but he didn’t get the venom because the women didn’t realize he was also a victim. Which is why he was apologizing for all the men at the end. Woah. 🤯
7:13 To be fair, if that was the movie's title, it would have been hard to recommend the film to other people. Someone might think you're just telling them about a p@rno. 😳
You mention the island being old. This is literally the island of the Lotus Eaters from The Odyssey. I don't know if they state that anywhere, but it seems pretty obvious.
While this is a neat idea, I believe The Odyssey has a Mediterranean Coast setting and this movie looks to be set on more of a Caribbean island - tho I havent watched it yet, that's just from the trailers/ths video. Did they specify a location in the movie?
I saw this in theaters. Went in not expecting much, and now I tell EVERYONE about this film. The friend I saw it with was more dialog driven, and Im more visually driven, and all we did was compare the two. Its really, really good. Im also glad they changed the title. The original title was too on the nose, and you expected sex (consensual or not) no matter what. The current title gaslights more. Could this person be in danger, or is their danger just their open personal perception. I think it works better lending itself to the idea that these women don't know what's happening to them.
17:23 Noooo! This wasn't her slipping up from memory, this was her accidentally letting it be known that she DOES remember our main character from before, when her hair was long. Red Rabbit
He meant she slipped up by not acting like it was her first time meeting her, she does remember her so she awkwardly says “nice… to see you” because she slipped up and should’ve acted like shes never seen her before in her life.
@@toddsilvis2322red rabbits were painted on the MC’s nails the FIRST time she went to the island. So when the snake catcher sees her again she keeps calling her that because I don’t think she ever knew the girl’s name. She’s unwittingly telling her she’s been there before. But when the MC seems confused she gets irritated and later gives her the snake venom to drink, realizing that the girl’s memory has been wiped. Omg I get to be the paragraph person today! 😁
@@Lozoyam1 the old woman isn’t slipping up not completely sure why OP said that. She’s intentionally telling her she knows her, I don’t think at the time she realized the MC’s memory had been wiped. She has full memory of what happens on the island because she drinks the snake venom; which is why she offers it to the MC when she catches her in the gift bag room. This was a really great movie with a lot of well-timed moving parts.
In regards to the ending, I saw this w/ another woman friend and she took it as her being just as manipulative and turning into the oppressor, while I saw it as insurance of justice since it is evident that men like that never receive the punishment they deserve. For example, there’s Harvey and Bill who got caught but only waaayyy later in life, and others who are roaming around totally free. I wld also want insurance to make sure someone like that can never again do what they did and do.
This ending reminds me of midsommar. Florence Pugh’s character chose to kill her bf, which completes her arc and gives us a sense of retribution, but in the end he didn’t deserve to die. In the same way, Freda deserves revenge, but that doesn’t mean that she should do the thing we see as evil when he does it but good when she does it.
@@Wenmill but she didn’t necessarily chose to kill her boyfriend, she was heavily drugged and didn’t know what she was doing. Also there was nothing to get revenge on her boyfriend for, he didn’t do anything.
@@Mushess People do wrong things on drugs all of the time, also hallucinogens don’t work to make people do things they don’t already want to do. He was a bad bf, but you are right that he wasn’t evil like this dude. That’s why leaving him in the fire would be a fitting end. It keeps him from committing evil. Also my point never was that it doesn’t make sense for Freda to take over, it overall would make sure others do use the island for evil things, but she uses the same method of control, furthering its misuse. Another video I saw on this talks about the cyclic nature of trauma. Slader was hurt as a kid, which probably cause his need for control, hurting Freda, then her trauma causes her to take it out back on a now harmless slader, trading their positions. This is why even though it’s satisfying, it’s still evil. In its most basic level, it shows a persons abuse of power used to hurt others, then flipping the power dynamic to create another abuse of power that hurts another person. While her abuse seems to be less, she is only controlling him, it still is the exact same abuse.
@@Mushess Christian was also manipulated by the Harga by forcing him into a ritual and making sure he couldn’t respond with his side of the story. He was also very emotionally unavailable to Dani when she was having a hard time and going through grief so he wasn’t blameless for getting into that situation. He even stole his classmate’s research topic and downplayed the group’s shock when the majority wanted to run. All these things can be true at once

I am confused how Frida was there on the island before, I believe a year prior. Similar things happened and she obviously got out and didn’t remember the whole trip. Obviously the time she was on the island was lost and when she was back at home… where does she think that time went? I wish they would have explained that. She was there once before, she was brought back… but where does she, or anyone else in her life, think she was? Especially her job.
This movie had me recovering for multiple days...good lords. It raised so many questions and brought out new horrors i had never even thought of. She's umm, seen some stuff..its evident throughout her work & always shocking. This was an amazing release for her,go Zoe!
The scene where Liz Caribel realizes what has been happening to her /the expression on her face is one of the best movie scenes of 2024. Its a masterpiece of 5-6 seconds
I love these types of Psychological movies, I eel like the writters always try to show us what's REALLY happening behind closed doors without being too direct, This is mos def gonna hit different considering all the insanity that is currently taking place in real life.
I would love to support Zoë Kravitz's directorial debut by seeing it in a theater, but I won't be able to because I got triggered just by watching this video. I'll send two of my friends to watch it for me instead. I've been through way too similar horrors, so I wouldn't be able to handle it. But it sounds like a really great film! It would _have_ to be for me to become so triggered by only watching a few clips from it :)

When I watched Blink Twice I almost threw up and as a horror fanatic I've never done that. It made me look at Channing Tatum a bit differently. Highly uncomfortable, emotional, breath taking and awful yet for this topic it was beautifully done. I would have anticipated a different ending, but I enjoyed the choice. Definitely enjoyed this film despite how it was making me feel.
@@tlahmed Definitely an experience I wasn't prepared for, but I'm glad to have it. Not everyone is going to enjoy this because of how it makes them feel, but for me that's the point. It hurts well because this happens in real life and it's so close to home for many, but it's something to be processed/articulated even through the lens of entertainment. If people can imagine and feel what it could be like, it's possible we can start applying that empathy to irl victims and try to be a better support when/where we can. I would rather people not like the film due to the content then go back to times where Naked (93) was highly praised. That's a film with the same content, but I couldn't watch it because it was far worse in every way and it was considering a "comedy/drama". A lot of terrible scenes with no real plot point and a lot of men found it riveting. That left a worse taste in my mouth than watching Blink Twice.
I wanted to know what the timeline of forgetting by the drug is. Like they forget what happened night before but do they remember who they are ,their friends and family are? How did they forget the friend who gets killed instantly? How much do they remember of their life outside the island when they go back? Doesn't main female lead have any family who wondered why she was missing?
This is one of my TOP films of this 2024 year and you did an AMAZING analysis and impeccable sleuthing detective job. The flower woman painting in the house and chess-like floor design in the house…the sounds of the necklace beforehand and Jess having a bite beforehand…I didn’t realize any of these!!! Honestly, I think it's bull that this isn't based on things she's seen bc she grew up in Hollywood and around those who hung with epstein and channing got his start through the "modelling agencies" that were connected with those types. They've seen some ish.
My wife put this movie on last night. I knew absolutely nothing about it. I actually was suprised at how much I was enjoying it lol. The 2nd act kind of gets comedic (makes sense, the movie was getting dark af lol) but by the 3rd, I was rooting for all the girls lol. It was a fun watch.
The rich preying on the poor and vulnerable written by a rich celebrity is what gets me. The sexism and predatory behaviour of the these ultra rich bros is certainly a good thing to critique, It's just telling when the people cleaning and keeping the island functional as a matter of neccisity for thier own survival are treated as background noise at best or evil enforcers at worst by someone who has never had to worry about starving or freezing to death a day in her life.
I love the concept of the BW winning in the end honestly its super empowering i wonder did anyone else read into that way? Most of these movies end in disaster so it kind of was my palette cleanser to watching so much black female suffering and struggle on TV growing up.

This movie is disturbing Camilla tied to the pole screaming yelling and crying sara bent over the table being raped its just confusing cause my body would tell me automatically if i was being violated im confused how they didnt know like when heather woke up with her bangs cut i would have put 2 and 2 together
I did wonder a bit about that too bc even if their brains forgot, their bodies wouldnt so wouldn't they be very sore or in pain the next day and speculate something happened?
She said money gives a false sense of safety, so in the context of the movie she's saying that a lot of people assume being around wealth automatically means you're safe and secure and you tend to let your guard down, which was happening in the movie. People idolize wealthy people because they live easy and polished lives but they can be just as dangerous and rough as any ordinary person.
i think whats amazing about this film is that it only gets better with time - because as time goes on, it becomes closer and closer to our own reality - which is terrifying but also fascinating considering this was drafted up 8 years ago - its really mind boggling but also the way this film was made makes it so it can age so well. Zoe really did an amazing job at making a TRUE horror. and the ending was truly perfect to me, i think it was really really cool to make her so truly morally grey! really loved it!
Its very interesting how SA is treated like a trend. What did she know? Directors and writers don't always write about personal experiences. This "what did they know" trend in the hopes they can pin another controversy on someone is wild.
To be fair, its been months since the premiere. Kinda sad cause I really liked them together and loved how happy they were when they talked about eachother during interviews while seperate. While showing Zoe's movie collection that interview was so cute cause she just lit up. But lowkey hope she comes back for Batman 2 and her and Pattison fall in love cause the chemistry was insane

I honestly thought the Hawke kid was a victim too at first. Like maybe one of the predators is gay and this is who they brought to the island.
Nah fr. Just a bad title overall.
Naming a movie like this, that title, is downright derogatory in my opinion. Idk how she can't see that
And over time, new audiences who didn't hear the hype around would also assume its corn. So glad they changed it.
You mention the island being old. This is literally the island of the Lotus Eaters from The Odyssey. I don't know if they state that anywhere, but it seems pretty obvious.
Thats cool
Glad I'm not the only one who was thinking this! It's cleverly done
That’s crazy!
Nooooo it has to be about modern stuff! Nothing beyond the last 5 years exists 😭
While this is a neat idea, I believe The Odyssey has a Mediterranean Coast setting and this movie looks to be set on more of a Caribbean island - tho I havent watched it yet, that's just from the trailers/ths video. Did they specify a location in the movie?
The “red rabbit” reference reminded me of the “run rabbit” reference in Get Out. Literally mind fucking their victims and taking their consciousness.
The run rabbit reference is also in Us.
@ Exactly!!
I'm so confused what the rabbit means in all of these movies? Run rabbit? Red rabbit? White rabbit 🐇? Like in Alice in wonderland
Adrenochrome structure looks like a rabbit. When you know, you know. Movies reference it a lot.
@@toddsilvis2322 It can symbolize a shift in reality. “Going down the rabbit hole.”
@@yella2804what does red rabbit mean?? I still am confused about that
@@toddsilvis2322red rabbits were painted on the MC’s nails the FIRST time she went to the island.
How did she slip up if she doesn’t have memory of what they do? Am I misunderstanding that she likes forgetting?
This video essay on midsommar explains how both aspects are right
ua-cam.com/video/NG_X3IfYED0/v-deo.htmlsi=CIZ_6sAM7kKOC0Cn
Not Ellen saying she has Chickens👀
Basically exposing herself codedly being the female version of slater king
Good thing they changed the movie's name because it was terrible, not a good fit for this movie. "Blink twice" is intriguing, and mysterious
One of the best thrillers of the year in my own opinion. Beautiful cinematography, great soundtrack, terrific acting (Naomi Ackie), way more people should know about this film.
I really enjoyed this breakdown thanks. Im one of those people who cant watch horror or thrillers like this but want to know the story and like hearing about how new directors are approaching film.
Same, I can't handle any sort of violence or gore but I really enjoy hearing about the thought and meaning that went into creating this film.
Same
I've found my people lmao
Same!
Same but in my case i can handle gore and violence in movies, just never depictions of sexual violence. Triggering for me..
13:15 also, flowers are pretty and pleasant, while the venom stings and burns. it's that sort of thing where sometimes you have to feel a little pain to get better.
you’re super underrated. I just discovered you trying to find a breakdown of this film and I’m going down a bunch of your videos and your shit is serious. Love it fr
This! Well said Lynsi 😊
Blink twice is like a low key documentary. Shi actually be going on just checc out “blink twice in real life”.
Seems like an MK ultra situation, but I agree those left out plots would’ve helped the movie have a more cohesive vibe
“I wonder what the last movie was?” Is actually a REALLY INTRIGUING question! 😂
Probably this one. 😢
This was such a great film, its crazy to think its her first one, like the cinematography story everything was crazy good
This movie had me recovering for multiple days...good lords. It raised so many questions and brought out new horrors i had never even thought of. She's umm, seen some stuff..its evident throughout her work & always shocking. This was an amazing release for her,go Zoe!
Damn the movie Trauma would be something you wouldn’t be able to process.
Streaming on Tubi free.
Im still recovering and just seen it last night😭
Well this hit at a wildly appropriate time for both the culture and their marriage apparently
Am I the only one who kinda wanted to know what Sarah did after leaving the island
Patriarchy said no… few moments later.
Women didn’t like it😂😂😂
you got us😔
I loved the canary in the coal mine reference with the yellow.
The scene where Liz Caribel realizes what has been happening to her /the expression on her face is one of the best movie scenes of 2024. Its a masterpiece of 5-6 seconds
I freaking loved this movie and I want her to keep directing and writing …it’s giving the female version of Jordan Peele
Naw. She in her own lane
Girl she made the fucked up female version of Get Out and I will keep watch of any other film projects she makes
I love these types of Psychological movies, I eel like the writters always try to show us what's REALLY happening behind closed doors without being too direct, This is mos def gonna hit different considering all the insanity that is currently taking place in real life.
Im sure Miss Kravitz heard a few tales of what happens on those islands. There is a whole other world we know nothing about
I love this movie, in particular the double meaning of the title. Not to mention the title card is COLD
It takes time, but it does get better. It's been a long time for me and I don't know if it ever truly goes away, but it is something that you can manage and channel into helping other people. I hope you're doing okay
5:02 Calling him the son of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman while adding "The parents of Maya Hawke" is so damn comical.
Like, yeah maybe he is Maya hawke brother, who knows😂
The timing of breakup post and the Ellen clip is chefs kiss. I’m gonna like it here 😂
So basically this is a Diddy party without yachts.
If Jordan peele did this movie it be more talked about smh sad
When I watched Blink Twice I almost threw up and as a horror fanatic I've never done that. It made me look at Channing Tatum a bit differently.
Highly uncomfortable, emotional, breath taking and awful yet for this topic it was beautifully done.
I would have anticipated a different ending, but I enjoyed the choice. Definitely enjoyed this film despite how it was making me feel.
Did you see the hateful 8?
I saw it alone in theatres and went from sprawled out across two seats to my legs clenched together and feeling sick.
@@kingghxstgaming I tried, but barely remember anything. I fell asleep while watching. Is it worth trying again?
13:31 BRO! I've been waiting for you to do this review simply for this kind of clue finding. Genius
wait the fruit of the loom bar can NOT go unnoticed, because we all "remember" the cornucopia!!!! 15:20
I wonder what the naysayers explanation will be for this one.
I know I remember the cornucopia. Cheers
I just came down here to say that lmao
😮 i didn't know they called off the engagement, then again i didn't know they were only together for 3 years lol 🤣
3:33 you need to understand that CHICKEN just like pizza is a code word.
been waiting for this one to drop
me too
I wanted to know what the timeline of forgetting by the drug is. Like they forget what happened night before but do they remember who they are ,their friends and family are? How did they forget the friend who gets killed instantly? How much do they remember of their life outside the island when they go back? Doesn't main female lead have any family who wondered why she was missing?
Is the red chair a throne? It might represent the power he has and that he is the King of Red.
a second watch through is def needed i really enjoyed the movie overall
…u do that🤨
This is one of my TOP films of this 2024 year and you did an AMAZING analysis and impeccable sleuthing detective job. The flower woman painting in the house and chess-like floor design in the house…the sounds of the necklace beforehand and Jess having a bite beforehand…I didn’t realize any of these!!! You really did an amazing job!
Honestly, I think it's bull that this isn't based on things she's seen bc she grew up in Hollywood and around those who hung with epstein and channing got his start through the "modelling agencies" that were connected with those types. They've seen some ish.
Zoe god father is bill cosby. Maybe she has seen some things. But she’s earned a privilege of not having to do much to get her roles
"He was sliding into her algorithm" is next sadistic!
SHE KNOWS THINGS.
After watching this at the cinema, I was like wow what a film! It terrified me! But it was soo well done. Also this analysis was great.
The ending was animal farm. She became the people who oppressed her!
Beyonce
I was SO impressed with ALL the acting! The fact that all this b.s. has BEEN going on in the real world, is frightening!
Jesus this movie was amazing 👏 I've never seen a film that made me so uncomfortable yet couldn't stop watching and thats rather hard to nail both
My wife put this movie on last night.
Yoooo there is so much depth to this movie
I love the concept of the BW winning in the end honestly its super empowering i wonder did anyone else read into that way? Most of these movies end in disaster so it kind of was my palette cleanser to watching so much black female suffering and struggle on TV growing up.
❤wish i discovered u before! The way u break it down and not only play scenes bt behind the scenes is great. Good job. Understand film thanks 2 u! Its more than i cud imagine
7:07 yeah right, you was gonna call it p diddy island
The lady who runs scentbird is a nut job. I wouldn’t do anymore sponsorships from them if I were you.
What do you mean?
“That’s why I always carry two” iktr. Y’all not taking my phone lol
Naming a main role Slater while Christian Slater acts another role creates immense confusion.
Wait, that disclaimer showed up before the movie started? I didn’t get that when I saw it in theaters lol
It warned about sexual assault scenes. It actually put me on edge because I kept waiting for the scenes.
Me and my husband started this movie not expecting to like it and wow! We were blown away! When it did the first flashback, I was so frozen! It was like a whiplash, scared the crap outta me! The apology scene was so scary, first time I really liked Channing Tatum’s acting! Really original and very triggering!
Why is the marketing for these movies so wrong? I really did not want to see the movie because of its horrible marketing. But your review is really good, I wish I knew about what the story is when it was in cinema
I thought Geena Davis character was Channings Mother.
Ghislaine Maxwell
I was just looking to watch this last night but I’ll just watch this instead 😂❤
It’s traumatic and triggering girl. Yes there is retribution but in the end what was done can’t be undone. Smh I would tell you not to but you have free will. But I’m warning you🤷🏽♀️
You should definitely watch it. It's great. Definitely sad but so satisfying
I wouldn't have watched this without seeing this so now it's the top of my list!
Guess I should stop watching and actually watch the movie
This movie is disturbing Camilla tied to the pole screaming yelling and crying sara bent over the table being raped its just confusing cause my body would tell me automatically if i was being violated im confused how they didnt know like when heather woke up with her bangs cut i would have put 2 and 2 together
I did wonder a bit about that too bc even if their brains forgot, their bodies wouldnt so wouldn't they be very sore or in pain the next day and speculate something happened?

That's why Sarah caught on.
She had a whole scar she forget... Clearly she forgot and ignored the signs. It's just like when you got a scratch and don't remember how you got it.
Wow 1:24 I was gonna say idk they were ever together. Wher wrote it 7 years ago
The review of this movie and the sponsorship by a scent company combined....🌺🐍😱
Zoe needs to write and direct more
She killed it
10:24 that's a wild statement to make, but also something I would expect to hear from someone who has enough money to be safe and secure.
fr
She said money gives a false sense of safety, so in the context of the movie she's saying that a lot of people assume being around wealth automatically means you're safe and secure and you tend to let your guard down, which was happening in the movie. People idolize wealthy people because they live easy and polished lives but they can be just as dangerous and rough as any ordinary person.
you misunderstood her
Just say you don't understand her and keep it moving.
This movie is so traumatizing. I just watched it last night and keep thinking about it. Now I’m watching this and it’s stressing me out 😂
That's real. I was similar at first too and then followed it up with "The Substance"... Was not a good time.
Did you realize the chairs are now red but the beginning the tables are red
great video! i'm excited to watch it, whenever that finally happens.
It was a great movie but I don't think I stomach it twice.
The red rabbit reveal blew my mind lol this movie was great
Your breakdown has convinced me to watch! Very excited.
i think whats amazing about this film is that it only gets better with time - because as time goes on, it becomes closer and closer to our own reality - which is terrifying but also fascinating considering this was drafted up 8 years ago - its really mind boggling but also the way this film was made makes it so it can age so well. Zoe really did an amazing job at making a TRUE horror. and the ending was truly perfect to me, i think it was really really cool to make her so truly morally grey! really loved it!
Thank you for an actual movie analysis. I swear the other channels just do a summary of the entire movie with no actual input lol
Its very interesting how SA is treated like a trend. What did she know? Directors and writers don't always write about personal experiences. This "what did they know" trend in the hopes they can pin another controversy on someone is wild.
The guy at 17:42 to 18:05 favors Drew Gooden lol
She’s def taking what was bad and going to do good with it, a revenge tour.
Of course they split after the premiere 😒
To be fair, its been months since the premiere. Kinda sad cause I really liked them together and loved how happy they were when they talked about eachother during interviews while seperate. While showing Zoe's movie collection that interview was so cute cause she just lit up. But lowkey hope she comes back for Batman 2 and her and Pattison fall in love cause the chemistry was insane
Isn’t Pattison in a relationship and has a baby with his partner?
@@awesumtoast97 lol I hope that doesn't happen since Robert Pattinson is engaged to Suki Waterhouse and they recently had their first child.
