It's probably just societal conditioning informing my feelings but seeing a fitted leather jacket on a 50 year old man for example, to me, always reads more as a desperate attempt to cling to youth (no matter how good the man may look or feel in it). But to each their own and everyone has the right to express themselves as they see fit.

@@blerksnarfgut7332 If people believe the only reason an older man is wearing a leather jacket is to cling onto youth, then it says more about the people than it does the man in question. There are many other reasons as to why that could be the case, so why must it be the negative, shaming, insecurity version?
A fitted leather jacket on someone like Jared Leto and Keanu Reeves looks more at home than a non fitted leather jacket. Furthermore, fitted leather jackets simply look sleeker and sharper than their baggy variants.
Body shape for this kind of style is more important than age. Age should be a nonfactor here. Only reason is because people have these propagandized ideas of what x age range of people should be like with how they act, dress, behave, live life, whatever. Screw that. Life is short.

      Wear

    • @obtsfan
      @obtsfan 2 роки тому +39

I used to do this ("wear what you want to wear"), and it didn't work out for me. I used to get compliments for doing that when I was in high school and college, but as I got older I would get less compliments, and soon people thought that I was much younger than I actually was, partly because I dressed immature for my age. A lot of people probably thought I dressed terribly but didn't have the mean spirit to tell me (so just because you get a few compliments, that doesn't mean you aren't looking silly to most other people).
I thought I was wearing what I wanted to wear, but I was never really happy with my outfits and wardrobe. I looked and felt immature. It was only after I started doing research and looking into fashion norms that I was able to chose the style that suited me best.
I find it similar to writing music (or creating any art, for that matter). My piano teacher once told me that you can throw the notes you like on a sheet of paper all you want, with no experience, but it will sound terrible and amateurish. The great composers of the past first learned basic music theory until they became experts. They understood the rules and how to abide by them, so that they could intelligently and stylishly BREAK THEM and thus create their own styles of music. Same goes for painters like Picasso. His early work was very traditional, identical to all the other painters of that era. Once he acquired all the skills and knowledge, he broke the mold in a way that was notably intentional. Same goes for most poets and writers. They learned how to write a standard poem/essay/story before they were able to break the rules intelligently. Great writers even break grammar rules for added effect, but they must learn those grammar rules first in order to achieve that effect.
Likewise, if you really want to have a style that you will truly appreciate, then I highly recommend learning the basics of style. You aren't obligated to exhibit any of the basics in your outfits, but I guarantee that once you see what is available and expected in terms of outfits, and have those pieces of knowledge at your disposal, you will be able to choose or create a style that not only you will appreciate more but that others will appreciate more as well.
This is especially important in professional settings, and in places where you need to look respectable. You won't always be able to wear what you want. In some settings, you will lose a ton of respect for dressing recklessly.
I learned the basics of fashion via this channel in particular. I don't blindly do everything that Ashley recommends, but I apply the tips that I agree with. My style has drastically improved and matured as a result, to the point that I have hooked up with and dated people in the fashion industry (girls who were definitely judging me based on my outfits), while not being a try-hard or sacrificing my own tastes. I never ever wear anything that I don't like. In fact, my style is super plain, laid back, and inexpensive, but others like it and I couldn't be happier with it myself. I'm definitely happier with my style now than I was when I aimlessly wore whatever I wanted to.
As Ashley says, you don't need to worry about the latest trend or hot items. Learn what outfits, looks, and pieces of clothing are TIMELESS and will always be respected. Learn them once, and then you can move on with your life and never have to worry much about fashion ever again. I haven't watched videos like this in ages. I just invested a few weeks/months learning as much of the basics as I could in 2016-2017, and then I applied the lessons and moved on. That knowledge has made all the difference, and continues to do so, 5-6 years later.
Sorry that was a rant, but I just wanted to put my two cents out there, in appreciation for this channel. Watching this video brought back good memories.

We need to stop these stereo types of what people should wear at what age. Hi Ashley, I followed your advise where the other day, I ended up browsing through a clothing store and found pants that were really good priced (bargain actually) and decided to buy a few. They're pants that I don't normally wear but for the price, I told myself "Why Not?". So one of the pants were light gray patterned slim fit joggers, yes joggers. It was a little long so I've decided to take off the garter, hemmed it just enough so my ankle will show. Once ironed, I wore it and paired it with a light coloured sneakers and black fitted t-shirt. I then went to visit my teenage daughters and son. When my stylish teenage daughter saw me, she said "you look nice". I don't know about others but to be complemented by your daughter on how you look is one of the best feelings in the world. We went grocery shopping and I felt she was proud to be walking side by side with me. The cost of the pants? $5 Australian Dollars.
Next day I wore another pair I bought (Cost a little more at $10 😀), light brown patterned skinny chinos (another statement piece) and paired it with fitted navy t-shirt and black sneakers (white bottom). I also folded the pants' bottom this time to make it look more casual again showing the ankle. I met with a friend for coffee and when he saw me, he said "Hello fancy pants". He's never seen me wear pants like this. While having coffee, there were a bunch younger looking people and one girl keeps glancing our way. I noticed she was wearing something casual but stylish and most of her friends were wearing clothes you normally wear at home. Maybe she was thinking "I wish my (male) friends would dress up like that stylish dad over there". Lol.

Agreed with everything you said except for AlphaM's fit 3. I think the grey jeans work really well here (except for that 1 spot on his right thigh although that doesn't look like part of the garment itself). It provides a bit more of a rugged look which pairs well with the camo pattern. A black pair of jeans will also blend too much into the cuff and hem of the jacket since those are a pitch black colour. The grey jeans also really highlight texture, and having a less notable texture with black jeans would probably make him look too shiny due to the texture of the jacket and boots.

With people trying to reassure men that no one cares about whether you're short or tall, this shows that (some) people do care and believe it is not something you should highlight with your outfits. It's probably unhealthy to tell someone it's ok to be short and then try to get them to make themselves appear taller.

There is inherent value in fashion advice coming from someone that has made a career out of assisting those in the public eye faultlessly present themselves. If you are similarly invested in these things based upon career advancement, mingling with successful people, to attract the notice of potential dates, or for your own self confidence, those are all legitimate reasons for style self improvement.
But at the end of the day, it’s still a facade and window dressing. Who is inside the clothes, is still more attractive than whether your watch strap is the correct colour. There is always room for personal style, and visually, it’s a lot more interesting than a perfect, but sterile look. Whatever you do, be yourself. The taste of the people you meet any given day for the most part aren’t going to critique your look like a professional stylist. In the modern world, if you’re putting any extra effort into presenting yourself well’ your’re leagues ahead of the fast fashion, athleisure crowd.

I’ve always heard the comments on blending colors to elongate proportions and I think it’s one of the most overhyped/tried things. Sure it looks fine in pictures but there’s no time where I’m wearing all black (for example) and standing next to my friends that I don’t look like my short self lol

jackets are a real big thing to hold your overall style together. I've seen enough 'these are the 7 jackets you need to own' videos to know that I personally should stay away from bomber and leather jackets - they just don't work and I've asked women in my life I trust on this and they agree.
it took an eternity but i eventually settled on a barber jacket for the autumn weather. I have winter jackets under control but the less cold weather is not appropriate for a winter coat.
I mean you are free to wear a leather jacket because it's what you are feeling but in most cases for a lot of us 9-5 office job people watching the videos, it's going to look out of place

Just found your channel. Enjoying it. Question. I'm heading to Savannah for a vacation in a few days and need a hat due to being bald and the heat will destroy my head lol. So in your opinion, if you have white shoes, simple black t-shirt, darker blue jeans, what color hat would you wear? Black or white?

I didn’t really notice over the last 3 months I’ve revamped my entire wardrobe based on your tips It’s been a game changer I can’t believe all the women I see doing more looking and smiling. I’m 62 200 I always bought huge clothes never focused on fit till you. Thanks Ashley 👌🏾

Disagreed with everything she had to say about jeans. She’s stuck in the dark wash / raw denim age from like 2005.

I appreciate Alex critique but at the same time it’s her perspective, her opinion and not facts. Nothing is wrong with a man getting a perspective from a woman who is a stylist but you as a man have to figure out what works for you as well…that’s key! Plus you can listen to all the UA-cam gurus you want but you wearing or buying something they tell you to get but your not confident or comfortable in it just defeats the purpose 🤷‍♂️. And if your not comfortable or confident then no woman will pay you attention anyway

I dress to feel well. As long as I feel clean and sharp, I really don't have any worries. Looking good comes secondary to me, and it usually takes care of itself anyways. I usually dress myself in a room with no mirrors. Then, I go into a room with one and simply see if there are any problem areas I need to check up on.

I mean.. suede is exceptionally impractical. Leather should be perfectly acceptable for any age, maybe different style or colour, but still - leather is universal

I mean, she gives good tips, don’t get me wrong but her judging Aaron because of his leather jacket is a little fruitless just because her expertise is in styling celebrities. His leather jacket was a nice piece. The outfits/pieces celebrities wear are some most of us won’t have access to and frankly not a lot of us would wear out anyways. Those celebrity outfits, while some pieces are nice, are more out there and akin to a runway fashion show. Not for practical wear that you and I would wear. A lot of the the celebrities she styles are taking photo shoots and going to award shows, basically like I mentioned like a runway not so much for actually going out for drinks or dressing for a date. I also think Tim’s last outfit was literally dapper af and legit the jacket was what put it together. Idk what she’s talking about.

big fan of your channel i've been watching for years and my wife really appreciates when i follow the advice you put out. with that being said have you considered making a video with more streetwear styling? I'm 32 years old and latino, darker skin tone who worksout and a lot of your outfits really do complement more the preppy thin lighter skin gentleman. Just a suggestion... still do agree with almost everything you suggest.

Ehh…I agree with only like half of this. Ultimately, my philosophy is to dress to impress MYSELF first regardless of age. I’m 40, but my twenty year-old co-workers had no idea for a long time until I revealed my age to some of them. Not because I dress like a 20yr old, but because I have a refined sense of style that I feel unspokenly impresses them. I have a streetwear background and have found a mature way to refine this style. I’m never getting rid of my Vans! lol
UPDATE: I just wanted to add…instead of “rules” the keyword here is REFINEMENT. I think following rules makes you sacrifice personality. These “rules” are good pointers, but I wouldn’t follow them to a tee. Do YOU boo-boo.

I don't mind seude jackets, I like trucker jackets as well but I'm only 31 but I prefer to rock leather, even with my boots. Just the way some of us men feel when we wear leather, we feel confident. I think it's every person's opinion, I don't think leather jackets will ever go out of style, I believe some outfits never go out of style, they're timeless. I will have a variety of jackets in my closet when I'm 40 but pretty sure I'll still have a leather jacket for Fall time, I just love jackets in general. I'm finally finding my taste in style. I have a few leather jackets in my closet but I prefer to wear my brown one over black, I just prefer brown with leather over black.
