I want to share a caution with your viewers. When my knee pain began, I saw an orthopedic guy who showed me my Xray and said I was "bone on bone" and would need a knee replacement as soon as possible. I went for a second opinion at a clinic which specializes in dealing with athletes. The Xray taken there was much clearer and, while it showed a reduction in cartilege, was not showing bone on bone. in fact, the docs there told me that, with exercise (recumbent bike or swimming), I might never need a knee replacement. So get a second opinion!

Yes, your caution is excellent advice. I visited an orthopedic guy after I'd twisted my knees and was in incredible pain. He did the X-rays and advised knee replacement surgery after I lost some weight. I saw my chiropractor instead and he helped a lot. My regular doc advised physical therapy but because of my job situation (long hours and long commute leaving me barely enough time to sleep plus no back-up for my desk) I could not do the therapy. This was years ago and now that I have time I've found things online like this amazing fellow who cheerfully shares valuable information. I have used several of the recommended exercises and methods for using my body and can now often use the stairs pain free. I'm still slow because I want to be sure of my steps, but the recommendations really do work amazingly. I think come summer, I'll be able to get on my bike again. What fun that will be! @@timyatcak3292 Unable to walk without moving like I had been drinking .My knees were so stiff and sore I planned every move b/c of the pain it would cause. I learned from Dr. Dave an alternative to surgery I learned that maybe I had a muscle imbalance so I did exercises to correct the problem .It helped. You have to put in the work no one can do it for you I'm grateful that this Dr. cares enough to share his information I'm not 100% yet( I'm working on that)but alot better than before and I'm so thankful. Sometimes its hard to be positive when you're in pain I hope you find relief if thats the case GOD Bless

When I had bursitis which I had since age 20. Two seconds after he saw. He said I needed surgery I told him no he wasn't interested in me and left. My physical therapist told me much of pain was originating from back. Thank you because the keloid I would get would cause greater problems because I had gall bladder surgery and the twisting of keloid inside gives me excruciating pain for last forty years. My physical therapist is amazing like 👍 you.

This is a fantastic explanation of knee cartilage healing, which reconciles very closely with my experiences over the past 4 years: I suffered what I would describe as a devastating full thickness cartilage tear in my left knee, when I was out for what should have been a 40-minute fast run in Jan 2018. I was halfway round the 10Kish loop when it felt like a shotgun had gone off inside my knee; instant sharp pain and instability, causing me to pull up like a sprinter whose hamstrings have torn within yards of the blocks. It was depressing, but I threw myself into all kinds of rehab exercises - stationary bike, trampette, cross-trainer and more - but it has taken a very long time for me to get to a position where I can now run frequently with only minor discomfort during runs and with rapid recovery between them. Two of the best pieces of advice I can give is (a) consider running in Crocs (or equivalent) instead of over-priced running shoes that create random instability and (b) do not underestimate the contributions of your muscles and tendons to the discomfort/arthritic feelings in your knees. One of the best purchases I have made, is a £40 electric massager (slightly club-like in appearance), which I applied to my quads and associated tendons daily or more for a period of about 9 months (Jan-Sept 2021): this helped me to break down adhesions that, in hindsight, had probably built up over decades and were contributing to imbalances, and to effectively ‘iron out’ my faulty legs! The upshot is that I am more attuned than ever before, to relative tensions of muscles and tendons, and can operate a running schedule that I would not have thought possible a few years ago. Stay strong.

This is almost exactly what happened to me a couple years ago and my knee joint is a lot better now, except I haven't been able to recover the muscle mass I've lost on my leg and my quads are basically atrophied. I did 6+ months of physio with little to no improvements (was too painful) and funny enough the only thing that helped my joint pain was stopping exercising all together (had a lot of work at the time so I didn't have time to exercise). Now I've been back to the gym for about half a year, my joint pain is hardly an issue in my everyday life, however the muscles are not activating and doing true quad focused workouts is indeed too taxing on my joint. It seems no matter what I do, the joint pain only comes back when I have to workout my quads and it's keeping my legs very asymmetrical. Have you been able to keep/recover the muscle on your leg? I feel like this is never gonna happen for me again. It's been 2 years for me and I'm still scared to go back to running in fear I cause further damage to my joint. I miss it.

Clearly, I’m not abreast of your specific circumstances, but am pleased to say that I have more muscle mass in my quads than ever before - at the age of 47. Spinning classes have been hugely helpful in this regard, with high resistances where possible (NB: I have a history of long distance cycle committing though), and in the past year I have performed step-ups on a 28 cm step with a 10 kg weighted vest on, and 6 kg kettle bells in each hand - which has developed not only my quads but also my calves, in a way that has made me far more robust. In the past month, I have started to run in barefoot shoes: my hip and lower back musculature tighten up after doing short off-road sessions (~10-15 mins), and I’m hoping that I will adapt in this regard over time - but the reduced aggravation to my knees has really surprised me. The change in mechanics is well established in the literature, but this firsthand experience has been a real eye-opener for me. However, only time will tell on this one - I could be deluding myself - so please watch this space…😌
I use to wear Crocks every day all day long until I develop Plantar fasciitis! My Podiatrist said it was from the Crocks cuz Crocks do not have arch support. I’ve stopped using Crocks since then & I no longer have Plantar fasciitis!

I had an injury where patella was almost dislocated and surgery removed all my cartilage in one knee. I have had an infusion to try to get cartilage tissue to grow back and it failed. I will look at your videos to strengthen my muscles around the knee to help with the bone on bone pain when standing from sitting and walking. My leg had a modified surgery done and it has remained swollen and my leg will not completely straighten for many years. I don't want to have a knee replacement, but may have to. Thank you Dr. David for your videos and your instruction. You don't waste your viewer's time and get right to the subject as to how to heal/improve the body and joint.

When I was a youth ; As I was entering a public city bus . I saw an elderly lady stepping slowly off the bus. I step back & let her get off the bus as I waited she continue to apologize for being so slow getting off the bus in which I said ; "take your time" as she began going down the stairs; she said to me " Young Lady whatever you do don't ever let them operate on your knees. To this day I always remember that . I enjoy your commentaries . I been told I need an operation but all the people I know that had this operations are living a miserable live .Thanking you for your detailed information. It troubles me when I read how our body heals itself but the Doctors are always ready to cut away . You provide good information about prevention & how we can heal oneself. Keep up the good work
That's an interesting memory Vivian! It's sadly true that many people get surgery that probably would be better without. But in their moments of desperation and with the surgeons trying to help with the training they have, it usually escalates to surgery. The root problems need to be addressed even for someone that ends up going through surgery. It's the same as someone who has a bariatric surgery to shrink the stomach - they still need to change their eating habits or they will end up having weight gain problems again. Thanks for watching! This gives me hope. After 8 doctors telling me to replace the knee, I finally found No 9 who at least gave me the standard cortisone injections and antibiotics regime. Thankfully, this reduced the symptoms dramatically, swollen knee, muscular pain, knee pain, etc., but did not address the cause. Even No 9 said they would eventually have to replace it. All of them looked at me like I was crazy or stupid when I suggested that; "Hey, before we go cutting things out, why not try alternative treatments first?" Anyway, I have been reasonably OK for the past 6 years, but now the pain and swelling has come back with a vengeance. Going to view the rest of your videos and apply your suggestions. This was SOOOO helpful to me. I had a TPF surgery back in January (7 months ago) and it's been a very slow and bumpy road to recovery. This is the most thorough explanation of the knee anatomy and re-hab I have come across. I am an exercise physiologist (second menisectomy on the left knee) a little more than two weeks ago My ortho hinted at knee replacement to which I replied..Nope...not doing that.....I know there is a protocol that can be followed to lessen the discomfort and pain associated with this kind of surgery. I knew folks like you existed..glad I found you.. (yaaay..UA-cam) I am very active (I teach group exercise classes and work out 4 plus times per week)..not giving up my active lifestyle. Following your videos for glute strength...awesome ....right on the money, Even my physical therapist is a bit surprised with state of my knee right now (she says,,my condition is really good for someone two weeks out of surgery. Within 8 weeks I was playing tennis and hiking again.

I’m so thankful you are on You Tube. I’ve learned so much from you after a partial replacement made both my knees feel worse. My MDs solution to that was to do a full replacement on the other knee. I declined but now I know what to do, thanks to your help, to do everything I can to help my knees. Thanks again

Healed my painful meniscus tear and arthritic knees by sitting on the table with ankle weights and applied small paddle kicks. This stretches the tibia and femur causing a vacuum in the joint which is then filled with enriched synovial fluid. This is where hydration and glucosamine come into play. Increase the process 10 fold by placing a hot wheat pack on top of the knee tricking the body to rush more blood to the knee joint. 10 min in the morning and evening. Thats it. Months later starting running again around the oval with zero pain. Got this info from a Chiro.
I've been trying the ankle weights 10 lbs like you mention and the difference is very noticeable. In fact I felt better even after the first time. I'm only doing 4 mins once a day but think I'll try your ideas. I've heard other people say that this will in fact increase the joint space.
@@rym202 Buy some 10 lb ankle weights and put them on. Sit down some place where you can dangle you legs and swing them back and forth for about 10 minutes. What I do is take my computer chair in my office and jack it up as high as I can get it.

I am currently suffering and attempting to recover from my second meniscus terror which now also involves the upper cartilage behind the knee cap and Baker cyst etcetera. I met a man this week 55 years of age said he had a torn meniscus and his completely healed. I said healed? You mean you just were able to live life again? He said no I had an MRI and x-rays done when it happened and then a certain. Of time later and it was healed there was meniscus back in there and it was healed the way it should have been. The doctor said to him you are such a rare case. I said what did you do?! He said I don't know I work in the school that has three floors and I have to walk up and down the three floors a lot and I said to him that's got to be a key!
About 13 years ago I was experiencing severe swelling & pain in both knees after only hiking for one hour. I had arthroscopic surgery on left one and was told that I was a prime candidate for TKR on both knees as the cartilage was worn quite badly. I suspect the root cause is due to being bow legged. Shortly after the surgery I did two things that have given me a new lease on being active. #1. PRP treaments #2 cycling This past summer I turned 75 and completed 18 full day hikes and countless 2 hour hikes with next to nothing for pain or swelling. I also do a lot of cycling with some rides up to 100k. Was it the cycling, PRP or both? Feeling great.

Thanks David. The doctor that exrayed my knee gave me no hope for improving my situation. After listening to you maybe he was mistaken. I didn't think that it was that bad (my fitbit says that I usually walk between 8000 and 10000 steps on the days that I work).

I use bone broth made from organic chicken drumsticks which I boil til the meat is fully boiled. I then use the chicken broth with the bones and skin small amount of veggies and a tbspn vinegar in crock pot for at least 8 hrs. Strain the bones etc into a bowl and refrigerate for several hours. Scrape the far off the top and you will have chicken drumstick jellied consume which replaces joint fluid. Takes about a month for each year you have the ailment.

Reading this on 15.08.2023 - one year later from my other Aussie Friend here. I am seriously considering traveling to the U.S. to consult you. The "doctors" here, know less than I knew after spending two solid weeks reading up on the latest science on published scientific papers regarding medication and the idiocy of injuring an injured cartilage in the hope it will enhance the repair of the original injured cartilage. I can derive no sense out of them -4 so far. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience and providing an alternative to the bad options that we are told are the "only" options.
@@tjsurname119Two years ago, after my injury, I struggled to walk. I was desparate to find the right doctor, the right chiropractor, physiotherapist, I am allergic to pain medication. As I said earlier, I was seriously told to get surgery! Dr Middaugh was my answer, he is brilliant, I followed his advice to strengthen the glutes. Since 3 months ago I could walk all day, do housework, without too much pain, at least not swelling as often. I still need to be cautious, stop when it hurts.
I remember when I played soccer I pulled a thigh muscle - it was a muscle and it took 6 months to be completely healed, this I mean, no tight sensation on the muscle I can only imagine. A cartilage must take about the same or more to recover. I injured my knee and I keep doing the mistake of overdoing it when I feel good, I have to be patient and wait.I hiked 3 miles all happy, and I payed with pain the next day... taking it easy now and talking to my knee everyday, very gentle exercises :)

My knees are bone on bone due to cartilage being "eaten" away by autoimmune arthritis ( PsA). Is this different from some cartilage being worn away as I've been told by my Rheumy??
How about INTERMITTENT FASTING to allow cellular regeneration within the knee joint?...I am combining that with exercise (walking) and biking and stretching, and am walking better now than any time in last 10 yrs....I am very hopeful for the future, without knee replacement i hope..your info is very helpful and i will watch more and more of your videos...my knees were bent 10 and 12 degrees, and now less than 1/2 of that, due to repeated stretching of the back of the knees, including the hamstring...what do you think?
I saw the Director of Orthopedics for the Orlando Magic and he said if I don’t stop running I’ll need knee replacement because I had very little cartilage and then he shot up both my knees with cortisone…which made the pain so much more worse…so a couple months go by and a friend told me about a acupuncture doctor…short of it - three weeks later he got the swelling down (2 appts) and then did cupping (3rd appt) which sucked out lumps from the tender spots around my knees and I literally walked out pain free, and no swelling after 3 months of walking with crutches and a cane living with pain 24/7. ..and if anyone has ever lived with pain it affects everything. ..then I got into a bike accident and my knee pain in one knee is back because I hit it pretty hard…only thing is I’ve moved and live 8 hours away from the acupuncture doctor. ..your videos are helping me regain movement again.

I am enjoying the learning here and thank you. Just had my hip replaced and that put a lot of strain on my bone on bone knee. Im gonna put as much as i can into these exercises while my hip finishes healing up. Sure not looking forward to one surgery after another.
Am 65 yr old, BMI 40, waiting for replacement need to lose 10 lbs. I do squats 3x weekly, 3sets x 15 reps. I do need assistance getting up from floor. Swelling in the knee, calf & foot. BUT NO PAIN. Unable to walk correct due leg balance & swelling.
Hi Dr, thank you for your very informative videos which have given me hope in my situation. To cut a long story short, my x-ray 8 months ago showed that the gap at my medial meniscus was down to 1mm, whereas at the lateral side it was 7mm (which the orthopedic surgeon said was still normal). He recommended hyaluronic acid injection which I did not take up. Instead I went to a physiotherapist and underwent a series of 15 sessions over 2 months. While it improved my situation significantly (I was able to walk without pain after that) it also resulted in swelling on my knee joint area. I have subsequently had the fluid inside my knee removed at another orthopedic surgeon, but my knee pain while walking has come back, sometimes very bad, sometimes mild (I'm not sure why the variation). Now, in addition to pain at the knee joint while walking, I have pain on the outside of my thigh, and it swells at the point where it joins the knee (the tendon?). What should I do? Appreciate your advice. Thank you very much.

Dr I was diagnosed with arthritis in my knee. Dr recommended knee replacement.. sine watching your video and doing the exercises I am feeling much better..ay the location at my knee it I'd bending outward, what can I do to get it straight again. Thanks for all the information

I have been living with bone on bone knees for some time now, had to give up playing squash a few years ago and forget running but I ski black diamonds and mountain bike and walk several kms each day. I also stretch and rely on curcumin from tumeric to control inflammation, also a couple of injections of Cingal each year. I am not expecting to need surgery any time soon as I do not have pain, only stiffness to deal with, I am 67.

It is great information. I was taking some collagen for a couple months then hopes that it would rebuild but then it got too expensive. Since then I discovered information about a PEA and I'm going to try that. PEA is Palmatoylethanolamide. Appreciate any info on that. Thank you
Hey Maureen! Referred knee pain is when the source of the pain is coming from somewhere other than the knee. It could be from a hip, back or foot problem. Maybe a pinched nerve, or a stiff hip or ankle that ends up causing the muscles in the area to work too hard and stress the knee joint.
I want to share a caution with your viewers. When my knee pain began, I saw an orthopedic guy who showed me my Xray and said I was "bone on bone" and would need a knee replacement as soon as possible. I went for a second opinion at a clinic which specializes in dealing with athletes. The Xray taken there was much clearer and, while it showed a reduction in cartilege, was not showing bone on bone. in fact, the docs there told me that, with exercise (recumbent bike or swimming), I might never need a knee replacement. So get a second opinion!

Yes, your caution is excellent advice. I visited an orthopedic guy after I'd twisted my knees and was in incredible pain. He did the X-rays and advised knee replacement surgery after I lost some weight. I saw my chiropractor instead and he helped a lot. My regular doc advised physical therapy but because of my job situation (long hours and long commute leaving me barely enough time to sleep plus no back-up for my desk) I could not do the therapy. This was years ago and now that I have time I've found things online like this amazing fellow who cheerfully shares valuable information.
I have used several of the recommended exercises and methods for using my body and can now often use the stairs pain free. I'm still slow because I want to be sure of my steps, but the recommendations really do work amazingly. I think come summer, I'll be able to get on my bike again. What fun that will be! @@timyatcak3292 Unable to walk without moving like I had been drinking .My knees were so stiff and sore I planned every move b/c of the pain it would cause. I learned from Dr. Dave an alternative to surgery I learned that maybe I had a muscle imbalance so I did exercises to correct the problem .It helped. You have to put in the work no one can do it for you I'm grateful that this Dr. cares enough to share his information I'm not 100% yet( I'm working on that)but alot better than before and I'm so thankful. Sometimes its hard to be positive when you're in pain I hope you find relief if thats the case GOD Bless

When I had bursitis which I had since age 20. Two seconds after he saw. He said I needed surgery I told him no he wasn't interested in me and left. My physical therapist told me much of pain was originating from back. Thank you because the keloid I would get would cause greater problems because I had gall bladder surgery and the twisting of keloid inside gives me excruciating pain for last forty years. My physical therapist is amazing like 👍 you.
As crazy as it sounds, your advice on muscle related back and knee problems have been offering such huge relief after all the gloom and doom medical opinions my doctors have given me until now.

This is a fantastic explanation of knee cartilage healing, which reconciles very closely with my experiences over the past 4 years: I suffered what I would describe as a devastating full thickness cartilage tear in my left knee, when I was out for what should have been a 40-minute fast run in Jan 2018. I was halfway round the 10Kish loop when it felt like a shotgun had gone off inside my knee; instant sharp pain and instability, causing me to pull up like a sprinter whose hamstrings have torn within yards of the blocks. It was depressing, but I threw myself into all kinds of rehab exercises - stationary bike, trampette, cross-trainer and more - but it has taken a very long time for me to get to a position where I can now run frequently with only minor discomfort during runs and with rapid recovery between them. Two of the best pieces of advice I can give is (a) consider running in Crocs (or equivalent) instead of over-priced running shoes that create random instability and (b) do not underestimate the contributions of your muscles and tendons to the discomfort/arthritic feelings in your knees. One of the best purchases I have made, is a £40 electric massager (slightly club-like in appearance), which I applied to my quads and associated tendons daily or more for a period of about 9 months (Jan-Sept 2021): this helped me to break down adhesions that, in hindsight, had probably built up over decades and were contributing to imbalances, and to effectively ‘iron out’ my faulty legs! The upshot is that I am more attuned than ever before, to relative tensions of muscles and tendons, and can operate a running schedule that I would not have thought possible a few years ago. Stay strong.

This is almost exactly what happened to me a couple years ago and my knee joint is a lot better now, except I haven't been able to recover the muscle mass I've lost on my leg and my quads are basically atrophied. I did 6+ months of physio with little to no improvements (was too painful) and funny enough the only thing that helped my joint pain was stopping exercising all together (had a lot of work at the time so I didn't have time to exercise). Now I've been back to the gym for about half a year, my joint pain is hardly an issue in my everyday life, however the muscles are not activating and doing true quad focused workouts is indeed too taxing on my joint. It seems no matter what I do, the joint pain only comes back when I have to workout my quads and it's keeping my legs very asymmetrical. Have you been able to keep/recover the muscle on your leg? I feel like this is never gonna happen for me again. It's been 2 years for me and I'm still scared to go back to running in fear I cause further damage to my joint. I miss it.

Clearly, I’m not abreast of your specific circumstances, but am pleased to say that I have more muscle mass in my quads than ever before - at the age of 47. Spinning classes have been hugely helpful in this regard, with high resistances where possible (NB: I have a history of long distance cycle committing though), and in the past year I have performed step-ups on a 28 cm step with a 10 kg weighted vest on, and 6 kg kettle bells in each hand - which has developed not only my quads but also my calves, in a way that has made me far more robust. In the past month, I have started to run in barefoot shoes: my hip and lower back musculature tighten up after doing short off-road sessions (~10-15 mins), and I’m hoping that I will adapt in this regard over time - but the reduced aggravation to my knees has really surprised me. The change in mechanics is well established in the literature, but this firsthand experience has been a real eye-opener for me. However, only time will tell on this one - I could be deluding myself - so please watch this space…😌
I use to wear Crocks every day all day long until I develop Plantar fasciitis! My Podiatrist said it was from the Crocks cuz Crocks do not have arch support. I’ve stopped using Crocks since then & I no longer have Plantar fasciitis!

I had an injury where patella was almost dislocated and surgery removed all my cartilage in one knee. I have had an infusion to try to get cartilage tissue to grow back and it failed. I will look at your videos to strengthen my muscles around the knee to help with the bone on bone pain when standing from sitting and walking. My leg had a modified surgery done and it has remained swollen and my leg will not completely straighten for many years. I don't want to have a knee replacement, but may have to. Thank you Dr. David for your videos and your instruction. You don't waste your viewer's time and get right to the subject as to how to heal/improve the body and joint.

When I was a youth ; As I was entering a public city bus . I saw an elderly lady stepping slowly off the bus. I step back & let her get off the bus as I waited she continue to apologize for being so slow getting off the bus in which I said ; "take your time" as she began going down the stairs; she said to me " Young Lady whatever you do don't ever let them operate on your knees. That's an interesting memory Vivian! It's sadly true that many people get surgery that probably would be better without. But in their moments of desperation and with the surgeons trying to help with the training they have, it usually escalates to surgery.
The root problems need to be addressed even for someone that ends up going through surgery. It's the same as someone who has a bariatric surgery to shrink the stomach - they still need to change their eating habits or they will end up having weight gain problems again.

This gives me hope. After 8 doctors telling me to replace the knee, I finally found No 9 who at least gave me the standard cortisone injections and antibiotics regime. Thankfully, this reduced the symptoms dramatically, swollen knee, muscular pain, knee pain, etc., but did not address the cause. Even No 9 said they would eventually have to replace it. All of them looked at me like I was crazy or stupid when I suggested that; "Hey, before we go cutting things out, why not try alternative treatments first?" Anyway, I have been reasonably OK for the past 6 years, but now the pain and swelling has come back with a vengeance. Going to view the rest of your videos and apply your suggestions. This is the most thorough explanation of the knee anatomy and re-hab I have come across. I am an exercise physiologist (second menisectomy on the left knee) a little more than two weeks ago My ortho hinted at knee replacement to which I replied..Nope...not doing that.....I know there is a protocol that can be followed to lessen the discomfort and pain associated with this kind of surgery. I knew folks like you existed..glad I found you.. (yaaay..UA-cam) I am very active (I teach group exercise classes and work out 4 plus times per week)..not giving up my active lifestyle. Following your videos for glute strength...awesome ....right on the money, Even my physical therapist is a bit surprised with state of my knee right now (she says,,my condition is really good for someone two weeks out of surgery. Healed my painful meniscus tear and arthritic knees by sitting on the table with ankle weights and applied small paddle kicks. This stretches the tibia and femur causing a vacuum in the joint which is then filled with enriched synovial fluid. This is where hydration and glucosamine come into play. Increase the process 10 fold by placing a hot wheat pack on top of the knee tricking the body to rush more blood to the knee joint. 10 min in the morning and evening. Thats it. Months later starting running again around the oval with zero pain. Got this info from a Chiro.

I've been trying the ankle weights 10 lbs like you mention and the difference is very noticeable. In fact I felt better even after the first time. I'm only doing 4 mins once a day but think I'll try your ideas. I've heard other people say that this will in fact increase the joint space.

@@rym202 Buy some 10 lb ankle weights and put them on. Sit down some place where you can dangle you legs and swing them back and forth for about 10 minutes. What I do is take my computer chair in my office and jack it up as high as I can get it.

I am currently suffering and attempting to recover from my second meniscus terror which now also involves the upper cartilage behind the knee cap and Baker cyst etcetera. I met a man this week 55 years of age said he had a torn meniscus and his completely healed. I said healed? You mean you just were able to live life again? He said no I had an MRI and x-rays done when it happened and then a certain. Of time later and it was healed there was meniscus back in there and it was healed the way it should have been. The doctor said to him you are such a rare case. I said what did you do?! He said I don't know I work in the school that has three floors and I have to walk up and down the three floors a lot and I said to him that's got to be a key!
About 13 years ago I was experiencing severe swelling & pain in both knees after only hiking for one hour. I had arthroscopic surgery on left one and was told that I was a prime candidate for TKR on both knees as the cartilage was worn quite badly. I suspect the root cause is due to being bow legged.
Shortly after the surgery I did two things that have given me a new lease on being active.
#1. PRP treaments
#2 cycling
This past summer I turned 75 and completed 18 full day hikes and countless 2 hour hikes with next to nothing for pain or swelling. I also do a lot of cycling with some rides up to 100k.
Was it the cycling, PRP or both?

I use bone broth made from organic chicken drumsticks which I boil til the meat is fully boiled. I then use the chicken broth with the bones and skin small amount of veggies and a tbspn vinegar in crock pot for at least 8 hrs. Strain the bones etc into a bowl and refrigerate for several hours. Scrape the far off the top and you will have chicken drumstick jellied consume which replaces joint fluid. Takes about a month for each year you have the ailment.

I just had a scope of my meniscus done. Extensive degenerative fraying cleaned up. 5 weeks out and still very painful in spots. Is there help? Will this pain go away? Love all this information! So much to learn!

Reading this on 15.08.2023 - one year later from my other Aussie Friend here. I am seriously considering traveling to the U.S. to consult you. The "doctors" here, know less than I knew after spending two solid weeks reading up on the latest science on published scientific papers regarding medication and the idiocy of injuring an injured cartilage in the hope it will enhance the repair of the original injured cartilage. I can derive no sense out of them -4 so far. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience and providing an alternative to the bad options that we are told are the "only" options.
@@tjsurname119Two years ago, after my injury, I struggled to walk. I was desparate to find the right doctor, the right chiropractor, physiotherapist, I am allergic to pain medication. As I said earlier, I was seriously told to get surgery! Dr Middaugh was my answer, he is brilliant, I followed his advice to strengthen the glutes. Since 3 months ago I could walk all day, do housework, without too much pain, at least not swelling as often. I still need to be cautious, stop when it hurts.

I remember when I played soccer I pulled a thigh muscle - it was a muscle and it took 6 months to be completely healed, this I mean, no tight sensation on the muscle I can only imagine. A cartilage must take about the same or more to recover. I injured my knee and I keep doing the mistake of overdoing it when I feel good, I have to be patient and wait.I hiked 3 miles all happy, and I payed with pain the next day... taking it easy now and talking to my knee everyday, very gentle exercises :)

My knees are bone on bone due to cartilage being "eaten" away by autoimmune arthritis ( PsA). Is this different from some cartilage being worn away as I've been told by my Rheumy??

I saw the Director of Orthopedics for the Orlando Magic and he said if I don’t stop running I’ll need knee replacement because I had very little cartilage and then he shot up both my knees with cortisone…which made the pain so much more worse…so a couple months go by and a friend told me about a acupuncture doctor…short of it - three weeks later he got the swelling down (2 appts) and then did cupping (3rd appt) which sucked out lumps from the tender spots around my knees and I literally walked out pain free, and no swelling after 3 months of walking with crutches and a cane living with pain 24/7. ..and if anyone has ever lived with pain it affects everything. ..then I got into a bike accident and my knee pain in one knee is back because I hit it pretty hard…only thing is I’ve moved and live 8 hours away from the acupuncture doctor. ..your videos are helping me regain movement again.

I am enjoying the learning here and thank you. Just had my hip replaced and that put a lot of strain on my bone on bone knee. Im gonna put as much as i can into these exercises while my hip finishes healing up. Sure not looking forward to one surgery after another.

I have bone on bone in the medial area, so are the exercises different for that?
Am 65 yr old, BMI 40, waiting for replacement need to lose 10 lbs. I do squats 3x weekly, 3sets x 15 reps. I do need assistance getting up from floor. Swelling in the knee, calf & foot. BUT NO PAIN. Unable to walk correct due leg balance & swelling.

Hi Dr, thank you for your very informative videos which have given me hope in my situation. To cut a long story short, my x-ray 8 months ago showed that the gap at my medial meniscus was down to 1mm, whereas at the lateral side it was 7mm (which the orthopedic surgeon said was still normal). He recommended hyaluronic acid injection which I did not take up. Instead I went to a physiotherapist and underwent a series of 15 sessions over 2 months. While it improved my situation significantly (I was able to walk without pain after that) it also resulted in swelling on my knee joint area. I have subsequently had the fluid inside my knee removed at another orthopedic surgeon, but my knee pain while walking has come back, sometimes very bad, sometimes mild (I'm not sure why the variation). Now, in addition to pain at the knee joint while walking, I have pain on the outside of my thigh, and it swells at the point where it joins the knee (the tendon?). What should I do? Appreciate your advice. Thank you very much.

I have been living with bone on bone knees for some time now, had to give up playing squash a few years ago and forget running but I ski black diamonds and mountain bike and walk several kms each day. I also stretch and rely on curcumin from tumeric to control inflammation, also a couple of injections of Cingal each year. I am not expecting to need surgery any time soon as I do not have pain, only stiffness to deal with, I am 67.

It is great information. I was taking some collagen for a couple months then hopes that it would rebuild but then it got too expensive. Since then I discovered information about a PEA and I'm going to try that. PEA is Palmatoylethanolamide. Appreciate any info on that. Thank you

What is referred knee pain? Causes?
Hey Maureen! Referred knee pain is when the source of the pain is coming from somewhere other than the knee. It could be from a hip, back or foot problem. Maybe a pinched nerve, or a stiff hip or ankle that ends up causing the muscles in the area to work too hard and stress the knee joint.
Does this also apply to articular cartilage tears?
