    I think the F80 M3 sounds absolutely glorious. That low end burble certainly put a smile on my face when I test drove one recently.

      That's great news for you man! It really is a good car. But the sound is so contrived and just doesn't work for me.

    • @Paul-dr8tq

      Yes, it certainly is different to the likes of your GT3. I was a little dubious about the active sound but I have grown to like it now.

    Found your channel today and I've been here watching your videos all day. Like you, I'm a car fanatic too. I like to wash, wax, and details my cars too.(Rang Rover Sport, Benz CLK55, BMW 335i coupe... ok sometimes I cheat and get them washed because it can get out of hand) However, you've got all the fun tools and machines. I've learned so much and have realized that I've been doing some steps the wrong way; like using the wrong tools, or using tools incorrectly (I guess I'm the one putting in those swirl marks). Also, that new house is awesome you'll have a lot of land and space to work with-I hope you get it!

    Great video Matt. I agree with you on the spiffing during high rev gear changes, it would get irritating after a while. I personally would love an E46 m3 for a bit of old school fun next summer but it's so hard to find one that hasn't been thrashed.

    I have to agree. The sound in the higher RPMs bothers me also. I had an E46 M3 before I bought my F80 M3 and I like the sound of my F80 a little better. However, I feel like my E 46 had a special feeling to it and the lines on the car are timeless. Great video.

    I think it's special - but I have a '17 ZCP. And I traded in my 981 CS for it, which was also special.

    Great video! I enjoyed hearing your opinions on the car!
    I have a quick question. When you're coming to a stop and eventually shift to neutral from whatever gear you were in, why do you shift to 2nd before going into 1st? Is it a habit sort of thing or is there a technical reason for doing so? I've never had a manual car before.

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  8 років тому +1

      +wu4533 It's an old habit that I started when I was 16. My mom had a Subaru XT where I learned how to drive. In order to get the synchros to align it was easier to put the car in 2nd then 1st. So now it just happens without me thinking about it.

    Thinking about selling my 2015 STI and picking up a 2017 M3... hopefully I don't regret it. I feel like driving the GT3 probably makes the M3 feel more lackluster. I may just do the Dinan stage 1 tune and keep it pretty much stock. Seems like a great DD, and I'm sure my fiancé will like being a passenger in the M3 vs my STI

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  7 років тому

      The M3 will be a much better daily driver than the STI. I would also guess the RWD will help offset the difference in fun between the two.

    I have quite a similar setup, Mineral White on Orange with Carbon Fiber trim, 19 in. wheels, adaptive suspension and 6-spd. I coded off the active sound which made a big difference for me, I couldn't stand the fake "V8" engine sound. Also I can hear the turbos spool up now which is nice. Euro MDM is a solid upgrade but it allows twice as much yaw so you have to be careful. I thought I would hate the rev assist but it's one of my favorite features, it makes daily driving such a pleasure.
    Funny enough, I like the fake overrun, in the city it creates a large echo off the buildings which entertains me...also after 8k miles my exhaust has become rather deep sounding at lower rpms, burbly actually. It's my DD also, my previous car was a 997 Carrera S so I can understand how this car doesn't have a sense of occasion like older models but I feel that's the case for most new cars. If the budget allowed I would have a 997 GT3 along with it for the weekend car.

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  8 років тому +1

      +windnsea03 I need to get a cable/software to code Euro MDM and active sound off. You just motivated me to get moving on it.

    Late to the party, as it were, but I fully understand your point around 21:00. I drove an M3 and did not think much of it (other than having a manual transmission) but I also cannot afford a 997 GT3, so I'll probably end up in one as some kind of first-world default option.

    And I personally like the customization options for suspension, power train and steering. It might be more useful on a different car (my dad has the CLS63) but I like ability to go to a really nice ride and then to no body roll

    I love the mature perspective you bring to owning an M3. It's obvious you're not a pro driver, and you admit as much, but you're a "good driver", you shift very smoothly and at the proper RPM for an everyday m3 owner. If I may, I really feel you should take your car to the track. Maybe you have, but based on what I see, you haven't, or maybe you're just extremely careful on public roads (which I respect). Owning an m3 on the road is one thing, taking the m3 to the track will open up a whole new level of respect for the handling of the car, which is what m3's have been known for since their inception with the e30, and then the e36 of the more modern era. They have perfect balance, and always have. Take this thing to the track bud, learn what it means to be a real m3 owner.

    Completely agree with you on older BMW manual M transmissions. Especially the Getrag 6sp in the E46 M3 with the stock shifter is just really awkward and rough to shift - even with clutch valve delete and a good fluid. A shorter, weighted shift knob helps but nowhere near the Porsche gearboxes I've tried.

      +VacheRO The F80 M3 feel very "digital" to me with all the technology, turbos, etc. I think the manual helps to balance the driving experience. It makes it not feel so boring. I also think the S55 is well suited for a manual transmission.

      The aesthetics of this car are second to none. I actually like the way it looks more than my GT3. The only thing I don't really like about it is the sound, so if you like the sound, I don't see how you couldn't love the car.

    Great video Matt. As weird as it may sound I'm having a hard time deciding between the f80 M3 and a Subaru WRX STI. I have kids and need the car as a daily driver. Your comment about the M3 not feeling special hit me a bit, and I'm concerned about spending twice the amount of an STI for it. Matt, what about a vintage porsche or vintage BMW? Do you have any affinity for any particular models? It seems as if you would appreciate the pure & mechanical driving experience of an older car. I am an E30 guy personally.

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  8 років тому

      +William DiPasquale For some reason, I'm a "new model" snob. I've thought about this a lot. I think I'm a sucker for technology, so I almost always prefer the modern option over anything older. When I go to a car event, I find myself walking right past the air-cooled cars and E30s. I just don't have that natural attraction like I probably should. Oh well, I guess it's okay to just choose what we like rather than forcing it.

    Hi Matt,
    I picked up a couple weeks ago a new 6MT F80 M3 and noticed that when in Sport+ between 4th and 5th and also between 5th and 6th, if I let go of the clutch AND give some gas, I feel some ""slip" and can hear a strange sound.
    The more I press on the gas pedal, the more it will "slip" and louder will be that weird sound.
    Have you experienced the same thing?
    Thanks in advance!!

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  8 років тому

      +Julien Durand I'm haven't noticed this. My guess is that is the Clutch Delay Valve causing the clutch to slip to protect it.

    I kinda noticed that you kept shifting from 2nd to 1st when you came to a stop sign, is it out of habit or is that doing something for the transmission?

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  8 років тому

      +Sean Kim It out of habit. Most all cars go smoother into first gear from second. They synchros align and allow you to enter first without the clunk. But I'm guessing it's not necessary on modern cars. I've been doing it for about 20 years.

  • @linkinparkdrift
    @linkinparkdrift 8 років тому

    RPMs aren't actually higher on cold starts to help warm the engine or cats up. On cold starts, the a/f mixture must be richer than usual to compensate for the fact that gasoline takes a lot longer to vaporize when it's cold (which is why more gas is used). Engines running rich don't make as much power and cold engines tend to have a lot more resistance (oil is thicker), so the RPMs are higher so the engine doesn't stall.
    Catalytic converters on most new cars are located nearer to the headers because it speeds up the time it takes to warm them up to optimal operating temperatures.

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  8 років тому

      I'd always read about cold start and cats, but none of those sources were definitive. I'd be interested to read more about it.

    • @linkinparkdrift
      @linkinparkdrift 8 років тому

      I'm not too sure, but I think it would be a byproduct of the engine revving higher. Although, richer mixtures tend to burn cooler than a mixture that is stoich. Now I don't own a BMW (335i possibly soon), so you may be right

    Hi Matt ! You never say a thing about the HarmanKardon system and im wondering your opinion on this, because you're experienced at this and you have a pretty good system in your gt3 to compare.
    How it's sounds ? Good, Bad, or between ? Can you compare it with the system you done for the GT3 ? M3 must have more potential, better isolation and space for the speakers i know there are subs under the seats too and some people say even burnmaster audio in 911's costs much more and sounds pretty bad compare to HK in bmw's.
    I'm not a audiophile, i'm more like a sound enthusiasts. I probably spent more money to headphones than my smartphone. All my music's are purchased and 256Kbps AAC files so i dont stream crappy mp3 files.
    Would you do same system for the M3 if the money and time wasn't a issue or is it good enough like it doesn't need it and it only makes %10 to 20 improvement, is there a major difference between the dynaudio and HK that will worth the money ?
    İn where i live HK is a 2.527€ option by the way

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  8 років тому

      +Excalibur I actually don't mind the HK system. It has a parametric EQ and isn't overly harsh like most factory HK systems. I do intend to upgrade it to this soon. bavsound.com/ Plug and play, low cost, and a minor improvement to an already decent system. You are right the environment in the M3 is much better for a quality audio system than the GT3. Sitting in the garage with the engine off my aftermarket GT3 system is world's better. Driving the HK holds it own.

    • @Exaliburn
      @Exaliburn 8 років тому

      +Matt Moreman Thanks for the answer. i will totally wait for your opinion on Bavsound system, before i do something. :) But i think i will go for something that will make more difference than the Bavsound. İf i had the factory system i would go for it , but i really don't think bavsound will make that much difference than the already pretty good HK system.
      I'm looking for something that will make me say "Wow" after the HK's.I really don't see a point to spent money for something that will make minor improvements. My mentality is if im gonna spent some money i want it to be worth, even though it costs a little expensive.
      One more thing: What you think about Bang & Olufsen system which offered in the 5-6-7 series that costs nearly 10k ? İt looks reeeeally cool, but i have no idea about the sound.

      @@ObsessedGarage yes but for me having the top down adds more fun than any other single point alone.
