1:54 while it may be self evident to some, it is worth warning viewers that one should not touch the brake discs after driving until they have had sufficient time to cool. They can be extremely hot after use.
I bought an M4 last month in part because of your reviews. Thanks for the tips, especially the one about stuff getting stuck in the wheels! Please keep them coming!
Hey Nick! I've had my M4 now for 5 moths and have loved every single moment, you make some very good points, the noise from the rear wheel for sure seems to be on every M4. They charged me $170 at the dealer to remove all the stones trapped behind that heat shield....
I live off a short gravel road and my 2001 330 once had a rock caught between the disc and shield, it was a horrible noise but I recognize instantly what it probably was, just backed up a bit and it fell out and never happened again. . One should know better then getting on it until fully warmed up. Some useful advice given here, quality vid, well done
Issues with brake shields certainly not unique to BMW......many times it might be that the shield was bent and touching the brake rotor...(as can happen in a car wash that has guard rails)... A quick push on the brake shield with a screwdriver "fixes" that terrible screeching/grinding noise.
Doing the valve exhaust mod (keeping valves open at all times) makes that cold start sound much nicer (although it's almost obnoxiously loud for the first couple of minutes :p) I came from a 335is, and from the videos, I didn't think the M3 would be much louder/nicer, but when I first started the car, I knew the M was something much more special. LOVE the stock sound with valves open; and downshifts with transmission set to S2 or 3 is AMAZING Great video! Found it from f80post!
I’ve had my M3 for 6 months and Im still learning, it’s an awesome car and I look forward to trying the manual mode auto downshift to the lowest gear. Thanks
I think a lot of the reason people "say" these sound bad is because they've been conditioned into thinking that V8 = good and so when they see V6, they'll jump to conclusions before ever hearing one because well, humans are stupid basically :)
no its because in most videos the car is not in sport+ mode so the exhaust valves are closed. This it has that stange sound but when they are open the sound is absolutely great. Shame that almost no one knows this
Nick Murray The problem is that half of the sound you hear inside doesn't come from the engine, but from the speakers... I love the M4, but i can't handle the fake sounds, it's like a girl faking an orgasm, it's good if you don't know it's fake, but once you know, it kinda spoils it, it just doesn't win your heart (or mine at least) because you know the "fakeness" is there. Love your car and videos nick :)
Jonny Oliveira The Active Sound is only a really small part of the engine sound onboard. What you hear onboard is actually almost only pure engine and exhaust sound. Soo.. I dont give a fuck. The M4 and M3 just sound great! The mew X5M/X6M dont even have active sound
sorel93 It was tons of fun. I had it for 5 days and the first time I was brave enough to let a friend drive, he lost control into a tree. Just heard from the insurance 2 days ago its a total loss....
I’m picking up my m4 in the new few weeks. Spent about 37839235 hours watching other people enjoy theirs on UA-cam to keep me going until collection day haha
Same thing (grinding noise Rt rear wheel) happened to me 5 days after picking up my M4 Cab. I would have worried about this. Instead, I pulled over, did as instructed, a little 5mm stone fell down and the problem was solved! Thank-you Nick!
Haha omg.. Im one of those that drive to close to the car in front them BUT there is a simple explanation to that. Bmw drivers just want to see the angel eyes in the reflection on the other car :D
Thanks for the videos Nick, please keep up the good work! I have experienced the grinding noise in the rear wheel on both sides. The dealership told me about the pebbles stuck near the rotor on 3 different occasions with only 1200 miles. It's good to know I am not the only one experiencing this issue. I love the car and very happy with all the technology advancement from my E92. Actually, watching the review videos helped me finalize my decision to purchase the M4 after selling my E92 M3.
Have the same problem with small rocks getting caught in my brake rotor dust shield. First time it happened I thought surely something was broken in the brake assembly. Backing up will usually dislodge whatever is wedged in there. This usually happens with my car when the tires are warm and are picking up more loose pebbles. Great video Nick Murray. Haven't thought to bend the shield out for more clearance.
Problem No.1, the Cow-Bell noise from the rear wheels. This happens about twice a year for a week each time on my E46 M3. How have they not rectified it 11 years later?!
i was saying the same thing and always settled for the lower, like a 335/340 . i was just about to go for a 340 after 4 years, and, i did some math i realized i can actually afford an M3 and i'm search for it right now. You don't realize how much money you throw into the garbage until you actually bring it up and face it. I hope things are changed for you by now as well as it did for me, good luck!
@@ranfrom3042 just do this, open excel or get a pen and a paper, and pick a date, lets say td is aug 1st, pick jul1st and since that day how much you made, how much you spend, and categorize your spending in 2 ways, necessary, unnecessary. see how much of your money goes to garbage and put a daily limit. 25$ a day seems like way enough for me. Even though i live w my parents, like i don't pay rent bla bla, with 25 a day my necesseary stuff is well satisfied (gas, gym membership, my own food etc.) I make about 700-800 a week and i'm a student, i used to be left with 100 or little more by my next pay check but now i got an at least 600$ saved every week. say it's 500, that 2k a month. Dave Silva I think you should give the new models a try. I got to drive my old E92 they other day, it was not a pleasant experience, my fond memories are no more.
Dave Silva That is why you think they are no good because you think the turbo will go on them some day? The turbos on the N55 and other BMW engines have been totally reliable so I doubt reliably will be an issue.
I just picked up my 2019 M4 and I'm so glad that I watched this video. It will at the least save me from getting my mirror and front bumper fixed! By the way how do you open the armrest compartment?

Just picked up my F80 M3 before Christmas! Can agree with pretty much everything 👍🏼 If I could add one thing it would be how much the adaptive suspension, acceleration, gear and steering can literally transform the car and give it a entirely different feel.
I don't find you annoying at all. Thanks for the effort you have put into this. You solved numerous of my issues. Thanks. The one that I am still working on is that my car in Melbourne, Australia is not displaying traffic information on the maps. I think I have everything set up correctly, but it is still not working. Thanks again.
Pro dog owner tip. A little doggie bed fits nicely in the backseat for your pooch. If you're gonna spent that much on options, don't forget your canine friend too
Can u Please tell the maintainece cost of M4 or M5 ,cuz i wanted to have a M5 and maybe i'll get it by next year ,so if you could tell the maintainence cost ,tires, brakes, insurances etc etc .
+Yash Ojha Well hard to say because maintenance is free for the first 3 years. I still have the original tires and tires cost as little or as much as you want to spend. Insurance depends where you live and your driving record but my M4 costs the same as my 2014 Golf S, so it must depend on the company. So far no costs.
+Yash Ojha: Starting all 2017 model, BMW is going to remove all the "free" maintenance program. It only gives 3 years or 36k oil change. So buy whatever you want ASAP. Cuz all 2016 model is the last year they offer full free maintenance program (which is 4 years or 50k miles). And YES, the current program covers brakes on all cars, including all M models. Tires insurance is well recommend purchase when you purchase your BMW (at least to me it is). Insurance offer 3yrs or 5yrs with unlimited miles. BMW dealer always REPLACING new tires when you get nail. But insurance will NOT cover if tires trace is less than 3mm. So in that case you cloud put a nail yourself.... Lol~~ there is a $50 deductible charge when you claim the insurance. The $50 charge is per visit, not per tire... So, even if you have 3 tires on one claim, then is still charge $50. Everything I said now is as 02/21/2016 update in California. But I don't know if it's same in your area.
+Yash Ojha: As today 02/21/2016, the cost of BMW tire insurance I purchase at dealership is $1,449 on any models. $2,150 on any M models. This price is base in California LA area. I don't know if your area will do the same. Please check with your local BMW dealership.
Thanks for the video Nick. I've had my F80 M3 for 7 months now and never knew about the automatic kickdown feature, and also the quick programming of the M buttons. I learnt something new today! Thanks again.
Keep up the good work Nick, never mind the haters. The M3/M4 has always been my dream car and I never thought I would have the opportunity to own one anytime soon, but recently my fortunes have changed so I just put an order in last weekend. It's going to be a long 2 months. Love the videos.
Great video but damn i got pissed at the dog, would not let it get near this great car specially the leather :) i love dogs but not in an M3/M4 beauty.
pweber84 i dont, it's not very smart to be honest. A car costing over half a million (swedish kr) is not something you want to ruin. Also the smell of a dog can stick. No thank you!
As for #3 (Winter Tires) my mechanic told me straight away to ABSOLUTELY GET NEW RIMS WITH THE WINTER TIRES. Otherwise, the gravel and corrosive materials in the road salts will destroy the rims and tire pressure monitors.
So that's what the sound coming from the back is! I often hear like a metallic scraping sound when driving slow and turning. Now I have to go check. Thanks
I can't believe some of the extremely negative emails you get, but find it amusing when you share them. I ordered my 2015 911 S Cabriolet while you were putting out your 911 videos, and they were very helpful. I have always been a BMW guy, but went with the 911 over an M4 convertible because the latter have gotten too heavy to use as a sports car (still have my 2001 330i Cab). I enjoy watching all of your vids very much. Cruise control for Tui is a clever idea. Good job as always!
It's a good V6 sound. But alot of people are used to the V8 sound of the last gen M3. The misconception is amplified when you drop one next to those throaty V8 AMGs. It's a different engine altogether people and it sounds great for what it is.
Great video Nick! I just picked up my new 2015 M4 and have had it about a week. I did my 1200 mile break in (SF to LA and back) and it gave me time to get a feel for her. I had no idea there were so many tricks this car had up its sleeve. Looking forward to watching more of these videos. Thanks!
FYI - the jump gear thing works in the M sport models (I have a M-435i Convertible with the standard Auto transmission as well. Sport+ mash the throttle past kick down, pull on the down shift and off she goes!
thanks for the great info. Just got my M4 after having a 340xi with a track handling pkg for a few years and wow what a difference. I thought the 340i m-pkg car was aggressive, the M4 is a beast. scary enough to have me signing up for M school right away.
Another great video Nick, keep it up! Just took delivery of my Sakhir Orange M4 last week, went with black rims though, really hits it off. On another point can't believe the amount of hate you get on here, far too many 9yr olds with unsupervised internet access
Nick/Anyone who cares, In the event that someone hasn't posted this already. The reason the new 3/4 turbo cars are louder when they cold start is because the factory programs the electronic wastegate solenoids to stay open to warm the cold catalytic converters in order to improve efficiency. It is much more noticeable on M cars and cars with test pipes due to less restriction. A lot of ecu tuners are taking this out for people with test pipes since it is useless without catalytic converters. Chris
Thank you for your explanation of the sound, there are actually a few of the new BMW's that sounds rough when cold. The M4 sound's sexy, fast, meaty, and flawless, to anyone whom is shy because of the sound go drive one, you will be sold once you hear her prrrrrrr
I'd expected this to be yet another UA-cam video where the presenter spent more time waffling and trying to be funny that getting to the point. I'm happy say to it was anything but. I found it to be very informative and got to the point. Thanks for posting a real-life review of the M3/M4.
Nick have had two friends who have owned x6 and x5 both brand new ...... Have had electrical + a/c problems under 25k km mileage .....on the other hand I am a Merc owner since 2011. No such issues whatsoever.
Oh my gosh! I wish I saw this video a few months ago. I bought a new 2017 M4 and took it up to the mountains (because the roads are awesome) and on the way back down I started hearing some grinding. I wound up pulling off the road and checking my wheels and brakes thinking that I really screwed up driving like that before my "break in" inspection. I think I did exactly what you described...picked up some gravel and got it wedged. It did go away after a while. So yeah...Cool video! Very helpful. I have the 2017 M4 and my Australian Shepherd loves it. He has a seatbelt and mat in the backseat. He just looks out the window or sleeps for most of the rides. This girl loves to drive her F82... and hang out with her puppy. Good times! I'll be tracking it soon.
Nick, I figured out how to solve that annoying glitch that sometimes places the car into neutral instead of park when shutting it off. If it goes into Neutral, all you have to do is take your foot off of the brake and press the startup button and it goes into park without having to restart up the engine. Also, I've noticed this glitch only happens while in Manual mode. I guess BMW is trying to give you a true Manual experience in needing to engage the parking break. Hope this helps!
Excellent video dude. Cant afford a M3/M4 but the video gives some useful informational real world owners insight that I haven't thus far seen in any other car videos. Ignore haters like Mitch and keep it going on other cars as well.
I installed a front mount camera that integrates with the iDrive system. It looks OEM and is activated by holding down the speak button on the steering wheel. In the past I have always messed up my front bumpers. Take a look at my install video.
I've been driving my 335i in Cleveland winters for years without winter tires -- BUT I use all seasons on my 'winter' wheels. Summer tires, I agree, are all but unusable in the winter. I got stuck in a parking lot once for 10+ minutes during an early snow storm once :(
you should always let your car warm up at least 5-10 minutes before driving anyway regardless what kind of car it is pro tip: if you don't' want to damage your front lip back into parking spots oh and about the sound: get an aftermarket exhaust , better note and more ponies, especially if you get a cat-less downpipe
1:54 while it may be self evident to some, it is worth warning viewers that one should not touch the brake discs after driving until they have had sufficient time to cool. They can be extremely hot after use.

+Shay Butta To you, maybe ;)
it's fake. They project it through the speakers.

The only thing you need to know: the blinker is on the left side of the steering
Lol so true
Ayy LMAO
No one knew the location, regardless the make. They dont even know that thing exists
blinker? whats that?^^ but if you pull it couple times it flashes :P
Once you’re in a BMW you’ll figure out why we don’t use blinkers

Informative video as usual. I'm still not convinced about the sound. It does not seem as pure as the e92 or the straight six in the e46.
1seipai true the V8 was epic. The E46 is naturally aspirated, the turbo in the M4 affects the sound a lot. The M4 still sounds good though.

Dave Silva That is why you think they are no good because you think the turbo will go on them some day? The turbos on the N55 and other BMW engines have been totally reliable so I doubt reliably will be an issue.
Dave Silva Turbos have been reliable for a couple of decades now, that excuse isn't going to fly.

Lets race! :D
Do It With Dan Funny to find ya here Dan! afterall you do own a bimmer aha
Do It With Dan Hey Dan, love your channel. Happy to race any time : )
Nick Murray Sounds like a plan! :P
Thanks so much for that warmup part in the video. I am seriously thinking of not buying this car for that very reason.
Also thanks for the in car speaker sound, that will surely prove your point.
Just picked up my F80 M3 before Christmas! Can agree with pretty much everything 👍🏼 If I could add one thing it would be how much the adaptive suspension, acceleration, gear and steering can literally transform the car and give it a entirely different feel.
10:14 "Deepthroaty" sound lulz
I don't find you annoying at all. Thanks for the effort you have put into this. You solved numerous of my issues. Thanks. The one that I am still working on is that my car in Melbourne, Australia is not displaying traffic information on the maps. I think I have everything set up correctly, but it is still not working.
Thanks again.
+Rainer Runge All the best with your new car. Good luck with those damn Victoria cops!
I don't have tin questions
Pro dog owner tip. A little doggie bed fits nicely in the backseat for your pooch. If you're gonna spent that much on options, don't forget your canine friend too
That kick down feature is awesome. I love it.
Thanks a lot :)
just wanted to make sure free maintainence includes the replacement of cermaic brakes and all those stuffs ?
By the way i really loved that you replied so fast :)
The small stones and debris getting stuck by the shield by the brake disc´s is a common problem way back. I have it sometimes on my 2003 E39 M Sport.
Oh my god I cant wait to get out of college and buy my future wife :(
***** Two more years to become a lucky bastard ;)
***** HAH! You wish... I am a careful driver, my friend... No worries
***** Damn it, even I can't be in denial that much. You know what? Fuck it, I'm still getting and have crazy fun with it
Then reality hits you and you realize you can't afford rent, food and a luxury car at the same time. Unless you stay in mom's basement ;)
Endless money pity
Not gunna lie, the cold start vs. warm start sounded hilarious.
#1 question.....why is your dog lying on the leather? Ever hear of a blanket?
+Joe Rico She likes leather
Nick,
Your videos are always very pleasant & informative with some fun kick into it.
Keep up the good job!
Warmed up or cold, still sounds like poop
Thanks for the video Nick. I've had my F80 M3 for 7 months now and never knew about the automatic kickdown feature, and also the quick programming of the M buttons. I learnt something new today! Thanks again.
who lets there dog in there m4
+Nick carrillo (Xxsmok3y57) A guy who loves there dog?
Anybody who can spell words correctly
+Bruno Danese lolol!!!..."nice.😏"
Only those who know the difference between "their" and "there". (By the bye.) lol
Keep up the good work Nick, never mind the haters. The M3/M4 has always been my dream car and I never thought I would have the opportunity to own one anytime soon, but recently my fortunes have changed so I just put an order in last weekend. It's going to be a long 2 months. Love the videos.
M4 looks naaaaasty.
It is true!
You have the dream config, white on red!! Probably add a lot of cost, but here on Switzerland i only find black on black... everything on black!
Great video but damn i got pissed at the dog, would not let it get near this great car specially the leather :) i love dogs but not in an M3/M4 beauty.
Hehe smart move :)
Major REX I always admire people who let in their pets into the car.
pweber84 i dont, it's not very smart to be honest.
Branden Findeisen 5 years with just using the same rims and no issues with damage or the TPM
Sounds like a heap of crap for a new car... :0(
So that's what the sound coming from the back is! I often hear like a metallic scraping sound when driving slow and turning. Now I have to go check. Thanks
Would always want a dog (that has rolled in s***) to claw at my expensive car's interior....
+Richard Harris I can offer this service to you.
Why would you put a stinking Mutt in such a nice car.
Good Grief !!
Animals belong outside.
Dogs > Cars
Nick Murray do you not worry ur dog damage ur seat
thought your comment would've gotten more thumbs down than the back-lash reply but no. lol bmw owners dont play
You clearly have never loved a pup
I have had 4 dogs in my life.
I wouldn't put either of them in My M3.
Nor would they live inside my house.
Animals belong outside. Period.
Loved this! Bought a 16 m3 couple weeks ago. And I hated how it sounded when I start it cold. Now i know not to worry!
It's a good V6 sound. But alot of people are used to the V8 sound of the last gen M3. The misconception is amplified when you drop one next to those throaty V8 AMGs. It's a different engine altogether people and it sounds great for what it is.
Informative video, and I appreciate seeing content that I have not seen elsewhere… Good Job!
OMG the cruise control answer was just brilliant! Great video nick!
Great video Nick! I just picked up my new 2015 M4 and have had it about a week. I did my 1200 mile break in (SF to LA and back) and it gave me time to get a feel for her. I had no idea there were so many tricks this car had up its sleeve. Looking forward to watching more of these
videos. Thanks!
FYI - the jump gear thing works in the M sport models (I have a M-435i Convertible with the standard Auto transmission as well. Sport+ mash the throttle past kick down, pull on the down shift and off she goes!
Darryl Proctor Good to know thanks!
Damn, that exhaust sound was completely different. Went from a riced out Civic to a boosted monster.
Got a 2014 428i, and I'm happy with it
thanks for the great info.
Nick/Anyone who cares,
In the event that someone hasn't posted this already.
Tui using the cruise control is pretty funny.
It's great that you comment about the mirror because I broke mine the first week! BMW replaced it for free tho :) great video btw
MAN!!! That exhaust sounds like an American Muscle car!!!!
The Q60 has a button that moves the car forward too without breaking any mirrors.
Excellent video dude. Cant afford a M3/M4 but the video gives some useful informational real world owners insight that I haven't thus far seen in any other car videos. Ignore haters like Mitch and keep it going on other cars as well.
Just found this guys videos but jealous of his Canon and Go Pros and def his M4. Must be making the good money.
I got stuck in a parking lot once for 10+ minutes during an early snow storm once :(
Awesome video man. Don't listen to the people who tell you otherwise.
you should always let your car warm up at least 5-10 minutes before driving anyway regardless what kind of car it is
pro tip: if you don't' want to damage your front lip back into parking spots
oh and about the sound: get an aftermarket exhaust , better note and more ponies, especially if you get a cat-less downpipe
Thanks man I go out with friends that seat thing where it hits the glass saved me some money
