A couple other things of note about Drivelogic; the difference in shift speed is really only apparent when you're getting after it. If you're just pootling around in traffic at low speed, it will still shift at a speed that makes sense relative to the throttle input. Secondly, it also dictates what gear it uses when in automatic mode. In D1 mode it may go as high as 5th gear at 30-some mph, whereas D3 will hold 2nd and just barely break into 3rd when you hit 31-32 mph. And uh.... 2nd gear at 30mph and 2500-some rpm (turbos locked and loaded, right on the edge of boost city) is a recipe for disaster if you're not ready for it. Speaking from experience lol
I have been driving an m2 for a year now and you have still thought me something new :D I did not know it went straight to park if you shut car off in drive. I've been stopping in neutral and pressing the start/stop button twice every time.
Partly because the owner'a manual is confusing on this issue. However, I believe even straight from Drive or Reverse, you're supposed to press the Stop button twice to shut down all accessories. Or at least that's what I've been told. I press the button twice everytime on my M2. Just take your foot off the brake on the second press. lol
Haha I wish I saw this video earlier. I got an M4CS two months ago and every time I've accidentally turned the car off in neutral I start the car back up to put it in gear to turn it off LOL. Appreciate you making my life easier.
I watched this video a long time ago and I drove my first M4 dct the other day and remembered what you said about the missing park option! Your embarrassment made sure that I did the right thing! Thank you very much sir! And what an awesome driving machine that is!
Hi. There is another useful feature of a M DCT. If you're driving in a manual mode and you floor the throttle, the gearbox will not down shift automatically. Instead it waits until you pull the down shift paddle under the steering wheel and then it shifts into the best gear possible (even 3 - 4 gears lower).
Great vids, Brian! Just recently bought a 2015 M4 and have learned a ton about BMWs in general from you, and now feel way more comfortable with the DCT! Definitely something to get used to. Thanks man, keep it up!
@@jeremypatino5907just bought a 2017 M4 competition and it’s definitely something to get use to. Still kinda confused on the shifting when I hit the gas
Interesting. I had an e88 135 with DCT and it had a park button and creeped like an auto, so a lot of this seems to be programming specific to the F80. Great channel btw!
Damn, starting from stop was exactly what I was doing, just press the gas like on normal automatic and he would lunch me so fast I hated it. Ty man, I guess life is there to learn something every day
Some DCT brands DO have the Parking selector for the gear lever, like Volkswagen, Audi, and in general the VAG group. Also they use to have the parking brake.
I'm about to get an F80 soon and never driven an automatic car before, and definitly never a dct. So thanks for this video, so I don't have to look clueless
I’m actually familiar with the Ms transmission, i think they are very interesting. When I park these cars, I just leave them in neutral, and pull the parking brake. The same with manuals 👍🏿 Can’t wait to get a M4!! I want some track time! Drove both, and they both are special. Especially those engine noises, very unique!
I have this habbit of throwing it in neutral before shutting my m4 off. So I start /drive gear then power off. Start button 2x. Good to know! Thanks B!
Hey Bryan, great video as always! Learned some new stuff. I had a request: could you do a video on the different types of bmw differentials and maybe even a video on switching a F30 to a LSD?
Thank you for the vid. I just got a F80 not long ago and it got jerky on me a few times when I give it to much gas. Im worried I’m going to brake something from when it happens. Do you know if I am damaging the engine when that happens ? Any pointers on better use of the low speed assistant and how to get on the throttle better would be much appreciated to
I have a F80 and Brian is on point. One of the thing about the DCT is that it can be pain in the rear a lot of time. It can guess your gear wrong and when you press that gas pedal, you would hear "clunk" because it switches the gear quickly to up shift or wise versa. Ouch! That is city driving on automatic. Now if you use the paddle, or even fully automatic in a track, it is a blast to drive. And forgot to mention that when you stop completelly for more than 1 second, it will shift to neutral even though it is showing 1 (in st gear). When you press the gas pedal at the exact time that it shift to neutral, it jerks. It is not the best feeling.
Interesting how every manufacturer DTC works, My 2018 cupra DSG on a stop light will not change to N instead leave it on 1, and decouple the clutch, aditionally, when on drive and lift up the brake the car will start moving like a normal Automatic.
Bryan. The fact that cars fitted with M DCT don’t move forward when you’re standing without hitting the accelerator has nothing to do with not having a torque converter. It’s called the crawling function and it’s how the manufacturer programs the transmission. I’ve had Audi S3 and S4 with dual clutch transmissions and they have the crawling feature so when you let go off the brake the car moves forward. Same with McLaren which they all have dual clutch transmissions. They move forward without you hitting the gas except the LT models which they program them like this to make them resemble more like a manual transmission vehicle.
Uh ... in the USA, 2011- 2013 135i & 135is were available with DCT as was the 2011 - 2013 335is, and Gertrude, they do have a Park setting in the shift pattern. These DCT do creep slightly at idle with no brake. E80/82/83 M3, F10 M5 & F12/13 F06 M6 had DCT also. Oh well, at you covered the F80/82/83.
Kies Motorsports, when you swapped to the carbon fiber shift surround trim, did you notice the drive logic button being a less tactile and shallow than the stock trim? It's the same button but I found when I switched mine, it was different.
I know this vid is old, but i got an f80, i have a gearbox problem, and my fuel is going crazy i would spend about £20 (about $25) within 2 hours of driving in sport (not ragging it or flooring every 2 seconds) please lmk why. I also get around 100 miles half tank and 240-250 miles full tank MAX
Hi, can you tell us, if you are in D1 and you are slowing down...from 50 to 30 let's say...can we put in N in order to accelerate to make noise while running ? and then in D1 back ? Thanks.
Great vid Brian and you said it that you prefer the dual clutch (DCT) over the Manual transmission, however do you feel the same comparing both options on an F80 M3 (Competition package)?
Yeah nobody told me when I got my m2 comp . I drove an hour and thirty minutes back to my county and had to figure it out . It definitely made me feel a little silly.
Hey, I have a question, Im looking to buy a M4 with DCT but in my country, there are alot of hills. What happens if im standing still and release the break while upwards a mountain? Will the car roll back? Or is there an anti roll back feature on the car?
Brian I plan to start changing the oil myself my local automotive store is having a sale on ramps a Jack kit set and a 1/4 and 1/2 inch torque wrench with adjustable settings but they are not electric can I do the job with these items I'm on a budget but if you think that this is alright to start of with please let me know and also can I drain my oil properly if the car is on ramps only on the front.
Love this man i need one I live in Corning NY would you be able to help me with any upgrades I'd be interested in doing. I'd drive to you of course. I'm talking turbos etc I can handle basically everything else
You cant, you have to think of it no different than a manual. Set the brake and leave it in neutral. Think about leaving a manual in gear with the brake set, and letting off the clutch, it will stall, so would a dct..
does this DCT gearbox the keep gear system ? i mean can hold the car in a gear just like manual gearbox? like c63 hold the car in first or second gear for drifting or burnout? plz answer
I have a 2013 335is with dct and the first thing I said with no parking break my car has a button I hit ontopnof the shifter knob itself says P I hit it and puts it in parking is this only for the dct for the M3 isn’t it the 7 speed dct same as the 335is?
Hey bro. Could you please make a same video but on the BMW M8 Competition Coupe? Its M gear stick a bit different than your M3 gear stick. I'm waiting for that video. Thanks.
Sometimes when I'm in D and accelerate with over 50% throttle (but not full kickdown) the transmission will remain in 5th until I slow down enough to engage anti stall protection, at the next junction for example. I usually flip the paddles up to 7th and then back to D. Anyone else had this issue with DCT? Other than that I absolutely love it though.

Guilty of doing the same with my F87 lol, just learned something new in 2023 🙂
cant you put it in park in nuetral

Great tips. When coming from a manual to the DCT you may have to fight the urge to lift the throttle between upshifts.

some DCTs also start rolling as soon as you release the foot from the brake, it depends on manufacturer.

Wait can you explain the “Low speed assist?” So I would just tap the gas? Or feather on it?
Just tap it, it will starting creepin. Tap it some more if necessary like at a stop and go type of traffic situation.
Am I right in thinking you should be off the gas when you downshift? Think I heard somewhere it's kinder to the box?

Yes. In manual mode it will stay in whatever gear you place it. I'm pretty sure it doesn't automatically upshift at redline either.
If you shift to 2nd when in sport mode at stop it will move without the jerks. There is plenty of torque to do this technique.
