This, like all your videos, is very well made and more people should know about Leonard. But all the footage in this vid is from his comeback when he was older and not in good shape. He had to fight again because of the stock market crises. But I guess unfortunately there is no footage of his prime out there.
People don't want to give white fighers like Leonard and heavywieight champion Gene Tunney credit for having the same fighting style as later fighters like Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard, but Leonard and Tunny were using that style way back in the 1920s, way before those fighters came up.
His boxrec says 89-6, but when you scroll down you’ll see way more losses (22 in total). How is this possible? And where does NWS stands for? Maybe you know why Reznick?
NWS stands for Newspaper-decision. Back in those times they used to have no-decision matches, where if the match went distance then the match was declared a draw. In the case of such matches, Boxrec finds different newspapers from the time of the match to see who the journalist of the time belived won these matches, but they don't count them for a boxers record since these newspapers obviously aren't always correct or sometimes are biased.
The newspaper losses, were some newspapers more or less likely to give a black or a Jewish fighter the loss? I remember that famous fight where there was the German fighter, I forget the name, he was a real hero.
In that time, you had baseball and boxing. Every newspaper had a boxing reporter that people trusted. The gamblers went by these to declare a winner and pay out bets. At that time, with the amount of fights these guys had, 22 loses was really not a big deal. You were bound to have bad nights and a few bad decisions. Greb had 16 loses and was probably the best ever. ( He also had 261 wins!)
That's a good call. I think you could probably put Joe Gans in there but I think Benny was just better than both. He beat everybody at a time when the competition was outrageous. He was one of the true masters!
Incase u all don't know old school black and white video is not real life speed it is sped up video. To some I'm being captain obvious but there is really people out there that think these videos are actual speed
Larry Fine was fighting at the same time, and they would have fought, but Larry killed a guy in the ring and was so devastated by it that he never boxed again. Larry was an animal, in the mold of Roberto Duran, and would have put Leonard's lights out in three rounds.
There is no hard evidence that Larry was a PRO boxer and there is certainly no evidence he killed a man in the Ring. But just assume he did. What makes you think killing a no name fighter is going to get him in with Benny Leonard?
@@constantine7382 Larry was very well known in Chicago as a ferocious fighter. @@mwbright By the way, I found the rumor that Larry had ONE pro fight but it isn't confirmed. I REALLY doubt if Leonard, Dempsey or Basilio EVER seen him fight. He certainly didn't fight Leonard or broke any of his ribs.
@@constantine7382 Ray Arcel trained Benny Leonard all the way up through to Roberto Duran.
