HOWEVER, he knocks people out, there must be something most people miss and mistake it for him being this supremely disciplined, well-schooled boxer, and that's just not right. Manny s one such person who possesses brute strength and can deliver KO power even from the wrong stance. Had Oscar Delahoya not been on the coke and trained properly, his traditional boxing discipline would have outclassed Pacquiao easily and he would have won. The Oscar who destroyed Chavez, schooled Trinidad, and fought Moseley would have creamed Pacquiao on his best day. And keeping in mind that Oscar is a left handed fighter fighting from the conventional stance, once he set people up and threw the left Hook, it was usually good night. Because most are meatheads that don't realize that boxing is a martial art and system. It's an art of fucking your opponent up. Or the ugliness. It's subjective, but intelligent fighting is art.
To hell with that; ONLY I need a trainer like him - then, the rest of you can fall victim to my fists of fury once I'm finished learning from him, LOL!
fuku payme - yeah we do but don't teach your enemy at all ! Notice Japanese masters only teach everything you know not everything they know ...think about that !!
Wonderful instruction. This goes for construction work, school teachers, math, science, chemistry, whatever. It's one thing to know how to do something, it's another thing to be able to clearly instruct it. Many people can't clearly teach what they know. This guy is a clean and clear instructor. That's an uncommon and valuable talent.
This is some good stuff, I want him to be my coach. I signed up into what I thought was a true boxing gym, but it turns out to be a gym where a lot of moms and really anyone comes to break a sweat. It starts with some jogging in place, left, now right, now left, now right, and jazz hands!...I'm kidding about the jazz hands, but you get the idea. They have heavy bags, speed bags, upper cut bags, even a ring; that no one uses so I'm confused on how it came to this. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with people wanting to get themselves a good workout with boxing. But I actually wanted to become a fighter, or the very least learn how to defend myself. But UA-cam coaches are my best options at the moment. Thanks for the knowledge good sir!
Hector Cortez Look up retired golden gloves or retired pro/semi-pro boxers in your area. 9 times out of 10 they become boxing coaches after they end their fighting career.
Maybe talk to them if you are truly interested maybe someone knows something but didn’t get the clientele they hoped but have adapted to the ppl that showed up.
MMA fighters who don't want to "mess up their style" have no right to call themselves mixed martial artists. The whole idea of mma is to take a variety of different styles and merge them, picking out what works for you and removing what doesn't, then replacing it with something better. If they come to his classes and say "you're gonna try turn me into a boxer" they're right, and they're idiots! Because they SHOULD become a boxer while training with him, learn to think like a boxer, move like a boxer, fight like a boxer. Only after they have a solid grasp of what it is to be a boxer can then they start to merge it into their mixed martial arts. If all they worry about is "my style" then they don't deserve to learn in the first place
If it helps, I have been applying a lot of his principles in MMA sparring sessions and they have helped me tremendously, I even feel comfortable shooting for a takedown out of this stance. I am not (yet ;)) a pro fighter, but this is just my 2 satoshis.
Emmanuel Toledo just focus on staying on your toes man. The balls of your front feet for movement. People have alot of trouble because they stay on their heels which makes it harder to maneuver properly and to punch while moving.
This is why Cuba dominate... footwork comes first and punches are attached to the flow. Even with momentum in movement... there is a pre-defined set of forces through the coordination of the muscles that will control it. I was watching how Marvin preloaded the back foot, swivelled the hip and spoke on balance... foundations to improve footwork and movement. Amazing!
I'm quite new into boxing, the only reason I got in to it is since I had an epiphany and acknowledged the game for what it is, which is exactly what Marvin so eloquently described here. so much thanks for this encouragement, I'm relieved to see I was not delusional :)
I'm 70 years old and benefitted from some top-notch professional trainers in my life. Marvin is an excellent trainer and I'm impressed. Great communicator and demonstrator great job Mr. Cook.
what the hell are you talking about ward agreed to fight kovalev before he even moved up dummy ggg was scared of ward ward has the balls to move up n take on the baddest guy in the division ward and his trainer preach learning footwork before learning hands student of the game
Thanks for preaching the correct way. It's not easy to find coaches like this man today, not many true boxing gyms are out there. The world is full of kick boxing, muay thai and mma schools, they get people in by the masses, most of them end just hitting the bag or just each other with no benefit. Boxing is the base, the footwork, balance, agility, body movement that boxing teaches you cannot be found in any other martial art.
Right on! Now this video is from 2012, and since that time we have seen the rise of excellent technical boxers with solid fundamentals: Vasil Lomachenko, Naoya Inoue, Genaddy Golovkin, and Artur Beterbiev. These boxers have the stance, the footwork, the angles - everything that makes boxing the beautiful art that it is meant to be.
Incredible… coach was talking about Wilder V Fury 10 years ago! Perfectly describing Wilder and his power over technique style. Got found out didn’t he!
We need more trainers like this who understands and never leaves out the true fundamentals of boxing who goes deep into the core and breaks it down to help fighters grow and become better.
Thanks Marvin. I learned something that probably contributed to me being a mediocre fighter because I didn’t know it back in the day. (I’m 63 by the way!)
Boxing is almost like dancing. It’s much more than just punching. That’s part of the reason as to why it’s such a beautiful sport. This man knows what he’s talking about. Great video!
Been practicing this stance for the past 2 years, still the hardest style period. It's beautiful when I spar and have my opponent in the line of fire because I can see their back foot. Thanks Shujin Marvin!
Mike Tyson had a very square stance. The sideways stance is vulnerable to leg kicks. There is a reason why Muay Thai fighters stand square. The square stance is also compatible with wrestling/grappling. IMO, Mike Tyson's peek a boo style is the most compatible style of boxing in MMA. The ducking and weaving is compatible with going for the takedown. Just don't bob sideways too much...
+Dizni That's why I think Boxing Is better than Muay thai. I feel like if you were to use Muay thai In the streets, there's a more chance of you taking more damage to your body than if you were to use boxing. Muay thai rely too much on the size of gloves. They don't slip, duck, Bob to side, shoulder roll, create angles ect. I feel like Muay thai just lacks the fundamentals on fighting. Without proper fundamentals, no matter how much Weapons you have, you won't survive long In the octagon or the streets.
Sanjeev patel Mcgregor is a terrible boxer haha and now there’s people in MMA who actually train Boxing and are way better boxers than him even Khabib being a wrestler outboxed him

Hundred percent bang on. I was taught this in Kung Fu, i had to spar for my first 3 months with my hands behind my back to understand how crucial footwork is. It also can teach you orthodox & southpaw combined based on changing your front foot to increase your balance and stability. Man speaks truth.
For the people saying that this stance is bad for low kicks (or kicks in general), yeah it is true, but you can try to combine muay thai/kick boxing stance with the "true" boxing stance. Tj Dillashaw, Dominick Cruz are both great exemples.
two words: george foreman. of course punching power matters. if it didnt he never wouldve been champ once let alone twice. having said that, if he was a better boxer and had proper footwork and defence he probably never wouldve been beat
Brilliant. I have spent a lot of time on thinking about how movement "opens people up" or "get(ting) angles". One of the most fundamentally difficult things to wrap your head around and work in practice. Thank you for this.
who the fuck just walks into a gym, goes up to one of the coaches and basically says im not going to listen to anything u say? thats just beyond disrespectful.
RENE HERNANDEZ thats wat the guy in the video said. he says that mma fighters and wrestlers come into his gym and tell him that they're not going to listen to wat he tells them because they have they're own thing going.
+Patrick Quinn The coach in this video is Marvin Cook, and that place where teaches is not his gym. That gym belongs to the Eric Paulson. He not part of the MMA classes, he's independent. He only does private Boxing lessons for now.
I agree with cardiomanify...... If you stand like that all the time you're going to eat a hell of a lot of leg kicks. You can't be so absolute, every stance has pros and cons which means in some situations it will not work.... You have to adapt to the situation. There's no such thing as one stands for everything.
Marvin is a GURU !!! Great applicator of his words so much we learn or not learn is. dependant upon the teachers speech to visual talent and hes got it all
Amazing explanation. Excellent teacher right here. Thank you for reinforcing this. Just looked at your profile, and its a damn shame you are not uploading anymore.
I went to my free class yesterday i have no experience with boxing or fighting for that matter and this is exactly what I learned there thanks for the instruction
This is great until a Jose Aldo type comes by and kicks that front leg. Don't get me wrong I really like what he said as far as philosophy goes. Mma stance has to consider kicks.
you are very prone to leg kicks in this stance and its not a very good stance to check kicks, but for mobility its actually one of the best in my opinion. Also you can just teep the person if they come in with a leg kick with no boxing setup or just backstep. Its rather easy, just watch saenchai and other muaythai/k1 fighters backstepping. Get use to backstepping until it becomes second nature.
I see the same problem, I'm focusing on boxing right now and the stance is very different from Muay Thai that I used to practice, so I'm trying to find my perfect balanced stance between the two.
Really can't thank you enough for these videos. I recently joined a boxing gym with 0 knowledge on the sport and from day 1 it seemed more like a boxing workout than actual training. For example first day of class I was already hitting the heavy bag and doing 1-2 combos on the mitts!!! I had no idea how to punch, no idea how to stand, these fuckers didn't even help me with the hand wrap. Two of my friends joined a week prior to me and were sparring already but the difference is they can punch hard and wrestled D1 in college so I guess the 'trainers' feel they are athletic enough to compete. I started looking for help elsewhere and this channel has by far been the most helpful as Marvin's ability to teach mechanics+area of focus+theory allows the student to see the big picture which changed my mindset of boxing from "throw a punch and hope it connects" to chess. THANK YOU
Man, this dude totally has me pegged. I hit someone with a left hook one day in the ring and knocked them out cold... I basically ruined my boxing technique after that. I totally fell in love with my power, after 5 stoppages in amateur boxing and Im only 5'4 125lbs. Then one day I was asked to spar a girl, reluctantly I did so... and HOE LYYY shit, she beat the CRRRAP out of me so bad! It felt like I was "sparring" at least 2 of her. I couldn't hit her for nothing. If I even thought about hitting her my head would suddenly get snapped back out of no where and *Bamn* she was gone. Great lesson learned. I'm glad it happened. She wasn't faster than me, she just had WAAY better foot work, and a much better idea of what actual boxing was, hit and don't get hit. Where as I had eventually development this retarded willingness to eat 3 of your shots just so I could land 1 of mine. Listen to this man people!
Yesb, he also means basic physics . the fundamental he preaches about is balance aka stability . there are tons of applications on the topic of balance outside and inside the boxing ring . boxing is a great form of exercise and I can't help but apply what I'm studying to boxing . #physics works

Because most are meatheads that don't realize that boxing is a martial art and system. It's an art of fucking your opponent up. Or the ugliness. It's subjective, but intelligent fighting is art.
Mom: What were you doing all of this time?
Me: Pure mathematics
we need more good trainers like him

fuku payme about 1 in a million people have savant abilities.
Priceless advice! Using my hips has made things flow so much better.
Every single word was correct. Understanding theory is crucial.
John You honestly couldn't have said it any better.
True. It all starts with Footwork & hip movement. On defense and Offense
This comment needs to be pinned and immensely like spammed. I fully agree.
If it helps, I have been applying a lot of his principles in MMA sparring sessions and they have helped me tremendously, I even feel comfortable shooting for a takedown out of this stance. I am not (yet ;)) a pro fighter, but this is just my 2 satoshis.
Fact
Nah, mma is about to be efective and win over all, if the boxer stance is not your stuff dismise
@@carlosandres1835 I don't think you u derstands my comment or the essence of MMA.
I'm just begining in boxing, and this is gold, true old school boxing 101, like we need !
Best video of an explanation of foot work that I have ever seen.
Angel Perez I just joined boxing/kicking boxing. And I am having trouble with my foot work. The 1 2
Emmanuel Toledo just focus on staying on your toes man.
Amazing!
5:02 This is also how we were taught to turn in Karate.
From the hips...
No wonder Machida has sound footwork!
I'm quite new into boxing, the only reason I got in to it is since I had an epiphany and acknowledged the game for what it is, which is exactly what Marvin so eloquently described here. so much thanks for this encouragement, I'm relieved to see I was not delusional :)
This guy is a Scientist. Awesome advice.
Check out the Erik Paulson if you like the cerebral style.
What an outstanding teacher I would pay anything to train with this guy.

Mike Tyson said "Everyone has a plan til they get punched in the face" LOl
Dustin McCain Joe Louis said it first he said everyone has a plan until they’ve been hit
He also said "I broke my back. My back is broken. Its spinal."
But I'm sure we can find a balance in there somewhere. :)
@zi.the.realest17 is that what I said? Mike was great! But i have to agree with Mr. Atlas, "He was great until he met resistance."
everyone has a plan, they just need to get into the ring to see if their plan works
Wow, after many years of MMA training, this is still mind-blowing. Respect!!!!
Foot work is very important! That’s why I’m focusing on that the most! If you don’t have balance you don’t have shit 🤷🏾♂️

what the hell are you talking about ward agreed to fight kovalev before he even moved up dummy ggg was scared of ward ward has the balls to move up n take on the baddest guy in the division ward and his trainer preach learning footwork before learning hands student of the game
This just became one of the best videos ive ever seen. Great teaching my brotha, I subscribed

We need more trainers like this who understands and never leaves out the true fundamentals of boxing who goes deep into the core and breaks it down to help fighters grow and become better.
Sounds like Floyd Mayweather to me...... but simple fans will never admit he was a boxing genius.

Thanks Marvin. I learned something that probably contributed to me being a mediocre fighter because I didn’t know it back in the day. (I’m 63 by the way!)
Wow
You are great & I Appreciate You

Fantastic instructor, I can sense the love & knowledge, keep it up.
Boxing is almost like dancing. It’s much more than just punching. That’s part of the reason as to why it’s such a beautiful sport. This man knows what he’s talking about. Great video!
This guy knows what its all about for sure, I feel that punching from a balanced position and staying balanced is key to winning fights
Been practicing this stance for the past 2 years, still the hardest style period.
It's beautiful when I spar and have my opponent in the line of fire because I can see their back foot.
Thanks Shujin Marvin!
7:23 beautiful piece of knowledge right there
I think anyone can appreciate the way this trainer talks when he teaches, gotta love coaches that got game, makes u wanna listen closer
You dont want to be too square have variation.
tai fighters usually take a lot of punishment as well
They take a lot of punishemnt beacuse they don't move a lot but they can deal with with kicks, knees and elbows better than this idiot who teaches
Boxing is no way better than muay thai overall. I feel like knife would beat both boxing and muay thai in the streets.
It makes more sense when I see him actually demonstrate it, looks so natural to him
The most un-ownable dude in my gym has perfect balance at all times. I work with him whenever I can but I hate him.
This guy knows boxing and loves it. Great teacher !
Boxing is the most important martial art, it's the bread and butter of mma. Look how successful mcgregor has been just because of boxing ability.
Sanjeev patel Mcgregor is a terrible boxer haha and now there’s people in MMA who actually train Boxing and are way better boxers than him even Khabib being a wrestler outboxed him
@@joaquinflores3547 😂 oh please.

@@joaquinflores3547 Wow khabib knocked him down with a wild overhand while Conor was expecting the single leg so he try to sprawl and got hit and intently recovered. Any other moments where you think khabib "outboxed".
Kirk Landau I practice boxing my friend Connor does not box better than a boxer plus Khabib did outclassed him because he was more patient and landed cleaner shoots actually the both of them are not good boxers but Khabib was the better striker in that fight

Tj Dillashaw, Dominick Cruz are both great exemples.
bas rutten stands square as well
Look where he stands ,. He's not eating any leg kicks ,. He's measured his distance,. As soon as you load up he is coming straight down the pipe, ko
This guy is a genius and explains things so simply but effectively
two words: george foreman. of course punching power matters. if it didnt he never wouldve been champ once let alone twice. having said that, if he was a better boxer and had proper footwork and defence he probably never wouldve been beat
Ethan Ciantar Muhammad Ali beat him? With footwork, and he had good fundamentals anyway he was a good boxer regardless of his gift
Foreman had great footwork but an unorthadox style though
Power alone didn't make Foreman champ. It helps, sure, but he had an actual method and style to bring it out.
George Foreman was a great boxer , if all he had was punching power then he would've been an average contender
Both Foreman and Ali had superb balance. Thats part of why Big George hit so hard
Brilliant. I have spent a lot of time on thinking about how movement "opens people up" or "get(ting) angles". One of the most fundamentally difficult things to wrap your head around and work in practice. Thank you for this.
who the fuck just walks into a gym, goes up to one of the coaches and basically says im not going to listen to anything u say? thats just beyond disrespectful.
where did that happen
RENE HERNANDEZ thats wat the guy in the video said. he says that mma fighters and wrestlers come into his gym and tell him that they're not going to listen to wat he tells them because they have they're own thing going.
+Patrick Quinn The coach in this video is Marvin Cook, and that place where teaches is not his gym. That gym belongs to the Eric Paulson. He not part of the MMA classes, he's independent. He only does private Boxing lessons for now.
They are right. His stance fucks your game up
7:25 are the words i've always needed but didn't know i did. My gratitude to you is immeasurable, you've donealot to reinforce my fight mentality.
I agree with cardiomanify...... If you stand like that all the time you're going to eat a hell of a lot of leg kicks. You can't be so absolute, every stance has pros and cons which means in some situations it will not work.... You have to adapt to the situation. There's no such thing as one stands for everything.
I think the clue here is "true boxer's stance". He is talking about pure boxing, for competition in boxing.
Hes teaching boxing dipshit

Marvin is a GURU !!! Great applicator of his words so much we learn or not learn is. dependant upon the teachers speech to visual talent and hes got it all

Excellent instruction! I particularly had a lightbulb moment with his "turn at the hips" explanation. Thank you .
This is great until a Jose Aldo type comes by and kicks that front leg. Don't get me wrong I really like what he said as far as philosophy goes. Mma stance has to consider kicks.
Lucas Hills But this is boxing
Henrique Braga dos Santos I'm pretty sure he's talking to an mma team. If not then my comment is irrelevant and I misunderstood.
you are very prone to leg kicks in this stance and its not a very good stance to check kicks, but for mobility its actually one of the best in my opinion.
Also you can just teep the person if they come in with a leg kick with no boxing setup or just backstep. Its rather easy, just watch saenchai and other muaythai/k1 fighters backstepping. Get use to backstepping until it becomes second nature.
oJose oh I see what you're saying. Thanks !

Very good, thanks for showing us your fighting intellect.Every gym needs a teacher like this dude.
he's got good strategy advice. but the actual stance he taught was wrong lol, your feet should not be on the same line (rear foot behind front foot)
