Very brief video of some sights from ICAST in Orlando, FL July 2022. Interesting show, both from a product and marketing standpoint. Okuma showed of their new Tesoro spinning reels, these will be excellent. Penn put their new high end import spinning reel in the New Product Showcase and took the price. There's no conventional and spinning category for saltwater reels, so they did not put the new Fathoms up for consideration - did not want to split the voting between two Penn products. Smart move, they won on the spinner... For the current black cast metal Fathom replacements, Penn thought out low gear ratio and improved the reels but a painted finish...? Not sure how folks will like that once a bit of boat-rash developes. It will be noticeable, that's for sure. Similar finish to Daiwa's old 2005 Saltist series reels. Speaking of Daiwa, their new 1200 size electric Tanacom reel will be a winner. Good addition to their and welcome announcement that they'd move production of all Tanacoms to Thailand - that should cure some of the supply woes we've experienced the past couple plandemic wasted years. Several new lures of interest, some accessory products that caught our eye. We see the consolidation of manufacturers, smaller firms being gobbled up by larger ones, big firms expanding into product areas for which they have limited background (marketing moves). Mustad showed off lures and rods to complement their expansion into fishing lines and lures, AFTCO showed off kill bags, lures, tackle bags.... Not sure if I like this trend, the big guys won't bring the same innovation and passion into their "new" products as the smaller companies who focus their attention.

Never left, just haven't had a whole lot to share and given we're working tight in terms of staffing time has been dear. However, we will have a couple things to share this week: New Makaira SEA's in matt black, a special purchase opportunity on some very nice MACHINED aluminum two speed reels, Okuma got a lot of things shipped at the end of the month, we have a ton of great gear arriving here today.

New Fathoms look nice. The rash can't be any worse than the current models. Glad to see they fixed the drag preset knob. I sold all 3 ld fathoms I had due to preset knob constantly coming loose. May have to look at the Fathom II!

Not sure about the drag preset knob, the one's at the show were locked - could not adjust the preset at all. Perhaps prototypes, but all seemed locked down to me. As to finish, a scratch will be much more noticeable and prevalent on a painted surface. I noticed one reel with two small scratches in the display group, Sergey and I weren't the only ones to notice, talked with one of their other distributors after the show and he also was quick to comment on the scratch potential. Time will tell us how big a deal the paint job will become, maybe Penn will sell touch up kits like they do with cars? Reality check for all manufacturers, the US dollar isn't worth as much as it was two years ago thanks to an inflation rate now stated at 9.8% (but by using the same calculations-more heavily weighted to fuel and food as was done in the 1970's the current rate is actually more like 20%). To maintain the price-point of current Fathom series reels, something had to give. We will need to fish these new tools, may be more refined and better than prior generation, or maybe not.

you have to pull the drag knob to be able to turn & adjust it….as to the paint, yes it easily chip off mich more scratched…has mine did when fell of from my table on my floor…finally more plastic components (lever, 2-speed disingage button) makes it feel flimsy plasticky…the gen 1 feels sturdy though.

@@johnsmith-xd9ej Roger that, but I don't believe the demos at the show allowed us to do that. I could be wrong, but that was my take when I played with 'em.

Great to see your face Mark! Thanks for the coverage on icast show. I’m thinking ill hold my fathoms till these new units get some more mileage in the field. Did Penn say if they were going to do them in black at all? I’m excite to hear your news on the Okuma products. Looking forward the six days with you guys in September!

Only silver for color of new Fathoms, but if you scratch off all the silver paint it did look darker underneath the paint and might come close...? Hold onto your old Fathoms, they represent money well spent. My only criticism of the current/old models was gear ratio of larger reels, say 40N and 60 which should have been under 2:1. That's a significant weakness, but still these reels allowed folks to "get into the game" of working large fish on a bit of a budget. Other than that point, the reels represented a major move by Penn, as I said when they were introduced. VERY strong value/performance ratio.

Which of the new Fathom II 2 speeds compares with the Penn International 20VISX?

None in truth. From a line capacity standpoint the Fathom 60 comes closest.

@@johnsmith-xd9ej Yep, that's a bit of a monster in terms of size. Glad Penn adjusted gear ratios on the new series, that's an improvement. We'll soon see just how strong of a reel an 80 in this build actually is. We don't fish big reels with light test line, and we don't fish heavy lines with an expectation of catching small fish. Not the arena for questionable reel strength. Time will tell the tale, until we have real world fishing experience on the larger size in a Fathom the new 80 remains a question in my mind,
