It's like a movie but better. Movie details depend on the visual effects to fill in the gaps. But with my imagination and getting a much clearer sense of details with being a book these books have been MUCH more satisfying. But this is the 1st audiobook I've listened to with a cast and not just a single narrator. I'll have to listen to more like this... oh darn lol.

These book series are sooo appealing to read...Join the author as she takes us through the roads of Tortall along with 16 year old Daine as she journey across life in new path of learning and discovery. I find the book so enchanting and enticing...Most appreciated.I felt forlorn when I finished the last book.Waiting for more......with lots of love and praise

Diane is 16 born 436HE, Numair is 28(?) born 424, that's 12 years. 4:40:00 ish both of them kind of refer to this gross age gap haven't listened to the rest of it, i dont think he exactly groomed her but its still disgusting that he didn't at least wait to 18 to confess although this is a different time

Agree. This is the least favourite of the quartelet for me. Apparently the difference is 14 years. This kind of normalises old men taking child brides. It would still be different if she was 25 and he was 40. And why on earth a teacher pupil relationship can remain the same pure unadulterated love 🤦🏾‍♀️

Remember, age difference in the time period this series is set in, it was common to marry after a girl had her first period. The majority of females were married by the age of 15 and gave birth at least once. Women did live long either due to repeated pregnancy and death in child bearing. Men remarried to have a bed partner but more importantly to take care of his children from previous marriage.
60 years ago, marriage in southern states in the U.S was 16 yrs old.

The "duck mol" is a platapus, Australian river creature. Sometimes called duck billed platapus. It says gday so the know its aussie, the also know about its poison barbs on the feet. It confuses me that they don't know the animal name though.

I love these stories, but I must admit, I have always felt they could have been done without the addition of lust & romance. 😅 I can understand them realizing that their bond has grown/changed after all they've experienced together, but the way it presents always strikes me as a bit out of sync with the rest of the tone and flow of the storys. 🤔

I enjoyed the first 3 books of this series despite not liking Daine because of her stupid stubborness and unthinking comments and actions. However, her actions in this book are beyond stupid. Then there's the revolting sexual affair between a 30 y.o. man and a barely 16 y.o. girl who has been his student for 3 years while he warned away any male her age paying her attention. Feels like grooming to me, whatever the author's actual intent was. I can't bring myself to finish it. She's just so stupid I can't find myself caring about what becomes of her.

  • @karasuumei

I can't, just *can't* fathom how this romance was deemed acceptable. I can see reason in an age gap, given the right circumstances and the age of the younger. That's all fine.
What *isn't* fine is the fact that he was almost 30 when he met 13 year old Daine. He literally raised her for years. He fell in love with her before she hit 16, which is the age of consent in a lot of places in the world (on a personal note, I feel 16 year olds are still children). He literally *waited* for her to turn into an "adult" in order to act on his feelings. This is gross and disgusting. This book would have been better off without it. For goodness sake, impressionable teens and pre-teens read this! People legitimately think this sort of thing is okay!
My thoughts? It felt like a father-daughter relationship the whole time, and the romance was an uncomfortable whiplash that left Numair as a pedophile. Why do that to him? With Daine having not had a father her whole life, the potential was there for some family drama and acceptance of her situation. That could've given her more character development, which frankly was sorely needed in this book.
The universe, the storyline, everything was great until this random pedophilia was added. Such a disappointment. I had to skip past the two most graphic bits because they made me feel sick.
Regardless of my feelings, though, the reading was excellent and the full cast did an amazing job translating emotions. I think the voices were perfect for every character. Thank you for this audio reading.
For anyone who stopped listening after the pedophilia was introduced..
    (Spoilers in comment)

      - The stormwings help them cross the desert
      - They meet the dragons
      - There are asshole dragons who hate humans
      - Kit's grandad and grandma take them to the human world
      - They decide to stay and help, apparently the rest of the dragons would spend eons deliberating so there would be no army of dragons to help
      - Battle, raaa raaa reee
      - Rikash dies :(
      - Leaf and Jelly die
      - Daine kills Ozorn with the badger claw after all her energy had been depleted fighting him
      - Chaos god appears, as planned
      - Big mom-and-dad-of-all-gods step in and put chaos god in a cage in timeout for a very long time (until the next star is born)
      - Daine has to decide if she wants to be a god or human
      - Her mom frees her from her promise and says they'll come visit her on solstices
      - She decides to stay human, was pretty clear cut
      - Mom shows her goddess form, it's exactly what you'd expect
      - The Darkings will live with the dragons
      - Dad gives her a new bow because she lost the first one
      - Daine goes back
      - The war is over
      - Reunites with Cloud, who finally exists
      - They go find Numair
      - Another uncomfortable scene
      - Stormwings start eating corpses
      The end, o7

As I read the books as a teenager the first time, I can assure you, that no child or teenager will feel or think in a strange way about the age gap. That is in fact a thing adults think about. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t accept pedophilia in any way, but I clearly remember how I felt about it reading it as a teen AND an adult. It’s not like Numair didn’t have hesitance about his feelings, and tried to be the better human, but Daine had feelings for him before too (as seen in Emperor Mage). You can analyze the relationship in bits, but it had been visible all along, that the author would go this way for the two characters. Also, Daine is considered an „adult“ all along, even from the gods (as the badger told her in Wolf-Speaker). The characters aren’t shown as a father-daughter-thing in any way in all the books. From the beginning, it had been more on the friends side. So I don’t think it’s that bad to pair them up in the end. But that’s just my opinion. You’re free to feel about that matter how you please. :)
