The Ohio State University Marching Band's Pregame Performance 2020

- Get ready for kickoff with our traditional pregame performance featuring our ramp entrance, Script Ohio and Carmen Ohio as well as interviews with band director Dr. Christopher Hoch and i-dotters Ben Murawski and Ryan Lannutti.
This performance was recorded on Oct. 30 at Ohio Stadium and edited over the next week. This will be the band's only recording of a full pre-game performance this season.
All band members wore special musician masks with slits for their mouthpieces, and all brass players had bell covers on their instruments to help present the spread of aerosols. The traditional formations that Buckeye fans know and love were redesigned so band members would be standing at least six feet apart at all times. Only members of the band, band staff, our audio engineer and announcer were allowed in the stadium during filming.
OSUMB is the sole reason I want to go to OSU. Trombone is my passion, and my dream is to play in the Ohio state marching band. I live in New Mexico, but luckily I have family in Ohio.

A few weeks ago I had never even heard of the Ohio Marching Band but I had happened to find a couple of bands 'pop up' on my IPad side bar (the way you do) and I liked them, the whole marching sequences and the music. And then one day this little video popped up and I said, out loud to myself,"Why on earth wd anybody do that?"........ It was the try outs' for the Ohio Drum Major'. So I did some internet searching and a WHOLE NEW WORLD opened up to me. ....... I LOVE SEEING THIS PRECISION, HEARING THE MUSIC, THE DRUM MAJOR ..... And my (almost favourite) the. I DOTTER. He took a LOT of research but I sought him out, and I love the I DOTTER. The chimes..... Gives me the Goose pimples. If there is such a thing as re-incarnation...... "Please let me come back as an Ohio I Dotter" :).
Around two years ago, I "discovered" them thanks to a link. I clicked, looked in disbelief and thought: "Only in America ...". That's how over-the-top I thought the ramp entrance looked. It didn't help when the drum major strutted down the ramp and touched his "dustbuster" to the ground, bent over backwards.
But then, after marching up and down the field, they had me.
That seemingly chaotic, but in reality perfectly choreographed transition from rows and columns to the "spiral" that leads to the script Ohio really took my breath away ... and does so every time I see it.
Other bands can make patterns and letters, change direction by 45 or 90 degrees, etc. However, I haven't seen any other band "make movies". That must require an entirely different level of dedication to perfection.
I am forever in awe of the OSUMB band and all its members. It truly must be TBDBITW (W for World).
Have no clue how anyone of the band members plays and marches so well with masks😣😷 well done!! ❤❤❤
You can buy special masks just for instruments.

I HEARD THAT TUNE AT THE END OF THE VIDEO.
IT'S TYPICALLY PLAYED BY A GENERALLY DIFFERENT STYLE OF MARCHING BANDS. IT WARMS MY HEART TO HEAR YOU GUYS BRANCH OUT AND PLAY "RADIO TUNES". YOU CAN STILL BE THE GREAT OHIO STATE BAND, CRISP CLEAR SOUND, IMMACULATE PRECISION, AND STILL THROW OUT A LITTLE ...DIVERSITY ..WITHIN YOUR SONGBOOK. OUR STYLES ARE IINDEED DIFFERENT, BUT NO MATTER THE STYLE THAT A AMERICAN BAND FOLLOWS, TODAY.. MARCHING IN EMPTY STADIUMS, WE WILL PERSEVERE THRU COVID, AMD I THINK ANY ONE WHO SINGS AN ALMA MATER WOULD AGREE....
WE CANNOT WAIT TO HEAR A WISTLE TO ATTENTION, SURROUNDED BY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE UNDER STADIUM LIGHTS.

I did not attend OSU for college for many reasons, but growing up in Southeast Ohio, I had the privilege of attending many Bucks games, and seeing TBDBITL in exhibition several times.
I admittedly shed a few tears watching this video as it brought back so many good memories during this difficult and strange year. Thank you, OSU Band! O-H!!

The year that everyone alive during the pandemic will never forget! How the simplest of tasks compounded into monumental tasks. Insert Script Ohio by TBDBITL and their iPAD wizards keep the treasures of traditions alive; only modified by social distancing and masks for you and your instruments. Wow. Well done!

This Badger LOVES how the Buckeye Band rocks the field. I loved my time as a sousaphone player in HS and get chills watching your team perform!
Life long Ohio resident & Buckeye fan. Was wondering when the ramp entrance started. Don't ever change anything! I like the percussion leading. Something about those loud thundering drums leading is powerful. Love the military style structure. Other bands can keep their dancing & their flash. No, I want my band to be the best band that supports the best football team in the nation. Go Bucks!
I, and many more like me, love this band. In the world of marching bands, it has no equal. Thank you for thrills and chills during college days and now from the comfort of an easy chair - the same feelings. Never change the military precision with percussion leading out of the tunnel followed by brass, brass, and more brass!! Love you all!

I was born in Ohio .... Moved out since then i took up the tuba to dot the i .i know I'm not young anymore or have that talent but still play can i at least get that sweater Ryan has? Or the image cause I'm like 4xlt and no one has that size.
The echo is so strange without the fans in the stadium.
How do they play instruments with masks on?
Not a 100% sure if it’s the same as Ohio, but for the band I’m in our masks have a slit that we can slide to the side to fit our mouthpieces in. After a while you get used to it and it really isn’t that bad

Does anyone know why they changed the roll-off sequence before Buckeye Battle Cry? It went from 4 measures (if your counting in cut-time) to 8. Just curious if anyone knows why. Great video (as always).
i think its cause the drum major was a bit late, could be completely wrong tho
I notice that, don’t really like it.
We are wearing musician masks, the extra measures in the sequence were to give us time to get the mouthpieces in the mask!

Marchmaster Performance Series Mask
I like the instrument masks, but don't they mute the sound? Are they worn during the game?
They're whats known as bell covers. They were used long before covid happened, usually as decoration or the like as there's usually designs on them. It does ever so slightly mute the sound, but it's not enough to be noticeable to most. The material itself is fairly thin as almost all of any droplets if not all would be caught in the instrument.
