I stumbled upon this movie after going down a UA-cam rabbit hole. As a lifelong musician (professional guitarist with a few years as the worst trumpet player in the high school marching band), I can understand the dedication and determination necessary to excel at your craft. But playing in TBDBITL is on a whole other level. My (plumed) hat is off to all of you!
Does it make you mad as a guitarist ( myself 50 years started lessons with Kevin Cronin and played at Pumpkin studios with REO and Styx- I was a pre teen) that the dedication needed to play a single lead it so underestimated and nobody realizes how slow you have to start to learn new songs ? People think its a natural thing when the truth is, the slower you play.. the faster you Will play !
At Ohio State you stay a little bit at your tailgate, make sure you get to St. John's Arena for Skull Session, and get to Ohio Stadium early for the band entrance...you NEVER want to miss the band.
As a Band Booster member of my "home Band" , I can tell you it is sooooo rewarding to see the students mature through the years...I was given title of Band Booster Member for Life two years ago...this makes my 23rd year !!!
And yet, when the football games are aired, we are forced to endure talking heads rehashing and predicting play after play, instead of being able to enjoy what the in-person fans are experiencing. SHOW THE BANDS AT HALFTIME
The halftime show has to be sponsored to be shown on tv. I am disappointed too that the band doesn't get air time. I guess not many people/organizations want to sponsor it.
Once, years ago, ABC was doing the telecast and they opened with Script Ohio in progress and here’s the amazing thing: none of the announcers talked over it! I’ve never seen anything like that since. Even the B1G Network, which ought to know better, has their announcers yakking away.
@@jaybuckeye2866 yeah I remember that. I looked it up and the music rights have to be bought by the company airing the game to show the halftime/pregame show.
I’ve been disappointed around this my entire life. UA-cam had to be created for me to truly understand the talent behind college bands. I’m a Texan, and adore Ohio State’s band.
@literallyshaking8019. I am 88 and I could never do that. His spirit was totally amazing. Also, you could tell he had not lost anything. My late husband‘s uncle used to broadcast the Ohio State football games for WBNS radio.
I love how the football team and the band got together and can actually see that its not all for fun but there to support each other. Its not for wimps. It is hard work and perfection is a must. I went to high school in Ohio and this was how our high school band worked every week. Being from Ohio, and my son got his doctorates there too. So proud of this awesome school!
Great program about a great program The Ohio State Marching Band! As a member of the Buckeye National Championship teams in 1968 and 1970 I have a deep respect for the band remembering how hard they worked out to perform their drills. Their desire for excellence helped push us to work harder. Glad to see the traditions morph together under Coach T. Have to agree with Urban's one word description - ELITE!
2 1/2 yrs ago I had a stroke….. while recovering from this ordeal I happened upon TBDBITL. I knew absolutely NOTHING about Ohio, University, Marching band, Drum majors etc, etc. I’m just an ordinary person living in the Belfast suburbs and living out retirement the very best life. Apart from Mr Stroke who dropped in on me one morning FROM A GREAT HEIGHT. Anyway, I’m recovering and I am very pleased to have just watched this documentary because I always wanted to know ….. ‘who, what…. What on earth is the “I Dotter”?? Now I’ve met him🌟, YeeeeHaaa. I’ve watched many videos of the band, Drum Major and all the students ‘thank you’ . I wondered how the choreography was worked out, how the music was chosen, how the uniforms were selected AND how did all the students do their studies????? Now I know a little of how it all works. Good luck to all of you, embarking on your careers and your journey through life. Yes good luck I Dotter and all your fellows.
I never thought I would watch two whole hours of documentary about any marching band ... but then I just did! I would love to see another of similar quality - shorter - focusing on the ramp entry and with all the little details highlighted. Like how the outside drummers make room for the rest of the band and then return in step with the lines in front of them. All the nodding and yelling. Everything.
There are so many little things done on Gameday that no one except band members understand and/or notice. You could fill a decent sized book on that sort of stuff. The Script Ohio book (OSUMB history book) has a lot of things but even still, many many traditions only exist in the minds of the bandsmen and carried forward to the new members every year
I started playing Sax 45 years ago. All my longest term friends were from Band. I ran track in Highschool. I no longer do hurdles or the 4x4 relay. But I play, as do my kids, in a community band. In my Daughters class, the top 20 (she was one) were all band members. Same with my son. My point is that this is bloody hard work. Not that being a football player isn't but its worth the notice and the appreciation.
Marching bands have made this argument for a long time. It's grueling and relentless at times. A lot if hard work goes into a show. Hours upon hours of practice, skipping out on social events or family time. We're dedicated and we love our craft. We just want it to be recognized properly. In other words, thank you❤

I wouldn't have agreed with you 40 years ago, but growing up lets you know, yes they are very athletic to combine both for long periods of time like they do.
Very touching where Alumni Band Member Tony got the high honor of dotting the i. You could tell how very much that meant to him. Wow. Did extremely well for being 100 years old. This is an outstanding look at the Best Damn Band in the Land for sure. I played B Flat Clarinet, E Flat Alto Clarinet and E Flat Alto Sax during my three years of high school Marching and Symphonic band in Los Angeles. Ours was a very small but mighty marching band as many urban bands in California are. Few members but good musicians and lots of enthusiasm.
I loved this documentary. I am from England, and at 70 years old, have only seen the bands on UA-cam, Ohio State has always been my favourite and I had wondered about them, as a group of people. My questions are now answered and I am even more impressed. I wish I could like this 1 million times. i loved it.
Oh, what memories this brings back. I'm 78 now and was the drum major in my high school. It was a wonderful experience. I (we) was never nearly as good as this but just the same, it was a quite the experience. With my uniform hat and plume, I was over 7 feet tall. I can't imagine how he does the backbend without crashing to the ground. Great band, great tradition and great video! Thank You.
I couldn't play an instrument if my life depended on it. I have no connection to OSU. I live in the East. Didn't pay alot of attention to my college marching band. But I always admired their camaraderie which I also see in the OSU band...big time! These band members have just as much commitment to their craft as any high level sport such as OSU football. I enjoy watching your videos. I seem to especially love watching the band simply marching to and from a stadium, game day marches through an away teams town/campus (more of the band marching on the Michigan campus please), it's like "yep here come the Buckeyes people!, stand back! Also like seeing the band go to local high schools and wowing the people. Does OSU have TBDBITL? No argument from me! I think the Texas Aggie band is also amazing.
As a Band geek, I can tell you one thing...Band and marching band is a life style totally unto itself...Like a family with 125 members or more !!! It is so tough and yet so rewarding and fun...
Yesterday in my youtube feed, the 2017 OSU drum major tryouts (posted by Konner!) popped up. Konner got assistant drum major, so I’m SO HAPPY to see that he got drum major in 2018!! and also, to see that Morgan Davis got assistant DM in 2018 :).
This just showed up in my feed and since I was in the band in high school I decided to watch it. It was so good that I know I’ll watch it again and again. Much better entertainment than most movies today! From Louisiana to Ohio….Great Job!
We've been a part of a damn great high school marching band through 5 children, 17 straight years, 2 of those marched in the Macy's Parade one year and 7 years later 2 others matched in the same parade. We went to BOA Grand Nationals 7 times. Won BOA Regionals at least 10 times, probably more. Put 3 of those through a major college matching band and one of those is now a junior high band director. I have daughters that play flutes, pics, oboes and English horns. Sons that play baritones, euphoniums, tubas and trumpets with all kids playing piano. One thing music has really upped our kids' scholastic abilities One of our daughters graduated high school at 17, undergrad college at 20, with two minors, and grad school, Masters, with another minor, at 24. All children graduated high school with associate's degree, and under grad college debt free. This all because of music and marching band in particular. So much time, so much pay off. I'd recommend it above sports any day.
Only marched in my HS band and never attended Ohio State but I thoroughly enjoy watching your performances!! So proud to watch who ever is chosen to "Dot the I"....great to see the dedication and striving for perfection!!
My high school band (in Ohio) was modeled after this. I attempted many of the things the drum major did but he is beyond good. It was a lot of work and an incredible experience. These kids will remember it forever.
I'm fortunate for this band to be from my home state of Ohio. My husband is a Veteran. Have always admired the military structure to the marching. Other bands can have their flash & dancing but this is what I want. I want the best sounding, best marching band in the land. I'm glad this was put together so the rest of the country can see how different & excellent this band is. Betcha, many didn't know about the skull session, St. John Arena & how respected this band is. Excellent documentary. I've wondered about a lot of the things you covered even the uniforms & how they design those one of a kind awesome shows. Go Bucks!
My father was a Fulbright Fellow at OSU from 1954 to 1955. My mother and I (aged 18 months when I arrived there) joined him. As a Welsh rugby fan Dad quickly cottoned on to American Football. Sadly I remember nothing about Columbus as a child… tho I have visited since…but I have a small pennant souvenir from the time. My parents were very impressed by the band and told me many stories of it… so I am delighted at last to have watched this film and seen them perform. Many thanks.
Thoroughly enjoyable. This tale was a great mix of personal stories and the community story of The Ohio State Marching Band. You demonstrated the commitment and work level I always knew was part of the rigor of OSUMB, but now for which I have a new appreciation. This made me laugh and cry (usually at the same time), and yes, it was "better than Cats." Bravo, Buckeyes. Proud to be an alum of The Ohio State University and member of Buckeye Nation.
So fun fact. My HIGH SCHOOL band, was the second band behind TBDBITL in Macys. And I always find inspiration from this band. The dedication, the hard work, tradition, and the self discipline.
This documentary is a treat to our nation. Thanks to all involved in music, particularly those marching bands who spend hours and hours entertaining us.
Hats off to the Ohio State University for its elite marching band. It is undoubtedly the best marching band throughout all of college. My son's a Buckeye, so while I cannot root for your football team as a Clemson Tiger, I can clap and cheer for your marching band....oh, and your adorable little mascot Brutus the Buckeye.
University of Washington Husky Marching Band's director is Dr. Brad McDavid. He was a Sousa in TBDBITL. Love seeing dedication to music like this. We love their band! go dawgs!
I grew up in a small Michigan town which has a very small college, which used to be one of the better music schools in the country. We had under 1000 students but consistently had around 235 band members. It was amazing to watch at parades. While they didn’t do the complicated routines that TBDITL but it was always fun to watch. With the slow loss of music majors the band eventually disappeared.
In 1964 I attended the Smith Walbridge Drum Major School in Indiana. I had the honor of being trained as drum major for our high school band in Orlando, Florida by Link Harper, Drum Major, Ohio State Marching Band. This experience taught me leadership skills that have followed me all my life.
All i can say is WOW!!!!!! Iam speechless, Ive played drums my whole life, i started playing when i was 8years old and it just came natural to me, my dad took me for drum lessons two times and my drum teacher told my dad that i didn't need to keep coming back because there wasn't nothing else he could teach me, that i already was so advanced that there was nothing else he could show me, and that it seemed like i had been playing for 2 years, and before my dad bought me my first set of drums i made my own set with pots and pans, lol He couldnt understand how i knew myself around a set of drums and have never played a set before, but my dad was a country music singer and i used to sit behind his drummer and just watch them play, anyways enough about me, I just was amazed what all you guys have to go through in this band, i had no ideal,I did play in my highschools marching band but DANG, you guys have to be really smart and very talented!!!!! Iam so impressed with you all, I swear i dont think i could make it in the band, I know i would have been cut if i tried out and ive played professional music for years, ive even played on the grand ole opry, But you guys work harder than the football team!!!!!
Incredibly inspiring documentary. Damn, those kids work so hard. Their level of commitment is completely off the charts. I'm proud to be a citizen of a country that produces such commitment. Thank you for making this film.
Hi Ohio. I grew up in NE Ohio in the Perry/Mentor area but have lived in Chicago since 2004. BUT, Ohio will always be #1. Its not called the TBDBITL for nothing. This is a very good documentary. I wish ESPN would feature this. Congrats for another 150 years. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BUCKS!!!
I’m grateful for marching band performances on UA-cam. The fact that pregame and halftime performances are ignored by broadcasters is a constant source of irritation for me.
As a band director of 35 years and a former member of an un-named SEC College Band I really admire the traditions of the OSU Band. I've always wondered about the reasoning behind the all brass band and now I know-the brass band tradition of the UK. Makes sense. The dedication and skills required to be a member of any band are beyond comprehension for most casual onlookers. I marched 5 years in college and in D.C.I. (Drum Corps International) and I can tell you it was an athletic experience for sure! OSU you have another fan. Go band!!!
This is such a wonderful video !!! I absolutely adore the drum major !!! He struts and marches with such precision !!! Watching him twirl that baton is so awesome !!! I could watch this band all day !!! They are fantastic and play and march so well !!! The Ohio script is so cool !! What a great show !!
I was in marching band from grade school through HS. Majorette a few years. Never was good at marching and playing, it’s very HARD! So majorette instead. My brother was drum major at our HS!❣️
I know what a thrill it is for a band to be chosen for the Macy's Parade. My high school band was chosen and also chosen to appear on the Good Morning America show. When you are the best damn high school band (at that time) you also get chosen to do special things! It was a thrill, as an alum to watch our band on TV!
To the one tuba player near the end that dotted the “I” in this movie/video… be glad you did not skip your first year of DCI!!! That will also be an experience you will never forget!!! What corps did you March with?? I want to go watch your show again but I’ve probably already watched it many times over!!
You kids are AWESOME!!!! My mate is an OSU alumni & showed me some of this great work. I personally twirled flags in high school & am so impressed by the new routines EVERY WEEK 😍😎🤓😳😳😳😳🏳🚩🎺🎷📯🎶🎼. And the recent RUSH tribute was impeccable!!! 🔔🔔🎉🎉🎉
I was the only Tuba Player in my high school for four years..... never experienced the marching band part..... sad to say... But my wife's niece has a daughter at Kansas State...who plays the TUBA.... there is almost a generation of time between us, but we share the love of playing the tuba..... I'm 75 years old now, but still remember playing RUNS on the tuba in band. Enjoyed doing concerts especially during Christmas time at grade schools.... Still remember coming back from an Xmas concert on the bus. And hearing the bus driver saying "WOW that kid on the TUBA was GREAT....
Great documentary. Two things I wonder are whether the band still leads the ROTC on a march once a year as a tradition going back to their roots, and I think it would be honorable if the lead drum major could swap one game per year with the assistant drum major. She looks like she was killing it just as well.
To be perfectly honest, I've never really been a big Ohio State fan... I happened to see and watch the Drum Major tryouts and saw Konner do his thing. After watching that, this video came up on the recommended list right below the tryout video so I obviously clicked on it... Not realizing it was a 2 hour film. Lol. I ended up watching the ENTIRE video. It was great. I actually felt a little teary eyed seeing these guys and gals being able to achieve their dreams and goals. The folks that put this video together didn't outstanding and superb job and deserve recognition for their hard work. I'm not afraid to admit that I might have started to take a little bit of a shining to Ohio State... Well, at least the best damn band in the land. 🙂
Wow!! I always assumed once they were in they were in! And also! It amazes me when they are on the field especially doing Script Ohio, how they know where they are . From above it looks easy but when they show shots down on the field, all you see is people!
Not only that, but each row has two alternates, because TBDBITL "does not march holes." Some bands, without alternates, will just march a smaller number in formation when a player is out for sick or family or whatever reasons. NOT TBDBITL!!! And so, every week, for every performance, the two alternates get to challenge anyone else in their row for the chance to perform. If the alternates win the challenge? The person they replace becomes an alternate until they can "challenge in" again.
@@68hitnmiss76 I did Script Ohio, but in HS. It is not actually that hard, mostly following the person in front of you. You just have to be precise at the cross-overs and trust your bandmates to be precise as well.
Impressive! I'm indifferent to marching bands (sorry), but I respect teamwork, musicality, comradery, precision, attention to detail. Lots to admire and respect in this organization. And very little to criticize...
The level of pride and commitment is awesome!! Yay!! Although I loved marching bands (those drums!!!) I never gave cheerleaders and marching bands the respect they really deserved. Luckily I have seen docs and learned of the incredible work, talent, passion and devotion which is involved. It is amazing most worthy of our regard. I love these young people. I learn from them. They inspire me and make me happy. I send all good wishes to each and every one. I hope they can feel it in some fashion or another.
Thank you so much for posting. This brought back fond memories of my marching band years, although my h.s. band was of course nowhere near this caliber!
I'm not even American, or ever been in a marching band since we didn't have those in Canada, but I fell down the Rabbit hole of this particular marching band. Loved this documentary and learning about something I didn't even know about. These people were in college when I was (:
I lovvvvvvve TBDBITL soooooooooooo much, but just have one question: During the ramp entrance (and at other times), the band members tap their chest. Does that have any significance, and if so, what?
As a kid, I wanted to be a cool rock drummer, and my parents were nutty enough to let me become a percussionist. I remember scoffing at marching band at first, because I was a baseball and hockey player that loved skateboarding. Being in marching band didnt really fit the "look." Thankfully, the drum instructor was there during the first couple days of High school, and the band director knew I was on the fence. He personally took me aside and showed me some of the most insane rudiments I never knew were humanely possible. He also explained how beneficial being in drumline would be for my overall percussion skills. Ill always be grateful for that day. I marched 6 seasons, 4 in HS and 2 at a D3 school in Newport News. Squad leader for 3 of those years. The memories and gifts from marching are some I will treasure most until death. With that said, I thoroughly enjoyed this and I miss the hell out of it.

My high school band (in Ohio) was modeled after this. I attempted many of the things the drum major did but he is beyond good. It was a lot of work and an incredible experience. These kids will remember it forever.
What dedicated band members and staff! An absolutely amazing Drum Major!
I’ve Marched in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade twice with the All Star Drum and Bugle Corp in 1994 and 1995 it was awesome!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
So fun fact. My HIGH SCHOOL band, was the second band behind TBDBITL in Macys.
And I always find inspiration from this band. The dedication, the hard work, tradition, and the self discipline.
Thank you for this exposé.
I imagine that you guys are exhausted after each performance. My hats off to each one of you!
That old man is like “I’m 100 years old, and I don’t care!, I’ll do whatever I want”
University of Washington Husky Marching Band's director is Dr. Brad McDavid. He was a Sousa in TBDBITL. Love seeing dedication to music like this. We love their band! go dawgs!
That intro song buckeye swag brings me back to marching season our school had this as a pep tune but called it wildcat swag I loved it.
The bonding with the football team was so effin cool
This is my 2nd year to watch this....I understand and appreciate more each time. So Amazing! Thank you! OHIO!
Sue and Ken, how proud you both must be of Konner! There have been many Drum Majors but for me Konner is on a pinnacle others could merely dream of!
Michigan gang
So sorry-everything relating to music and art seems as if it is disappearing. Physical Ed too.
This is so impressive. Especially in this era of individualisation.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BUCKS!!!
beautiful documentary, very inspiring 💜🇧🇷 OH! IO!
I’m grateful for marching band performances on UA-cam. The fact that pregame and halftime performances are ignored by broadcasters is a constant source of irritation for me.
As a band director of 35 years and a former member of an un-named SEC College Band I really admire the traditions of the
OSU Band. I've always wondered about the reasoning behind
the all brass band and now I know-the brass band tradition of
the UK. Makes sense. The dedication and skills required to
be a member of any band are beyond comprehension for most
casual onlookers. I marched 5 years in college and in D.C.I.
(Drum Corps International) and I can tell you it was an athletic
experience for sure! OSU you have another fan. Go band!!!
This was sooo interesting! Everyone from Band Director to Drum Major to Band Members...incredible!
So proud to be a Buckeye Fan and a BIG Fan of the BDBITL. Only regret is not attending OSU.
Just finished watching this....LOVED IT! Great documentary! Such PRIDE❤️
Carmen after The Game: Goose F...ing Bumps!!! Thank you TBDBITL
Great documentary and they are by far the TDBITL. Incredible dedication and talent! Makes me proud to be an Ohioian!
Amazing young man, and humble too!💗🇺🇸💗🇺🇸
This is such a wonderful video !!! I absolutely adore the drum major !!! He struts and marches with such precision !!! Watching him twirl that baton is so awesome !!! I could watch this band all day !!! They are fantastic and play and march so well !!! The Ohio script is so cool !! What a great show !!
Great inside look at TBDBITL. Go E-row!
I was in marching band from grade school through HS. Majorette a few years. Never was good at marching and playing, it’s very HARD! So majorette instead. My brother was drum major at our HS!❣️
These young men and women make me proud to be a Buckeye!
This was a great documentary 😊👍
Always fun to watch my fellow Band people play and OSU band videos.

BRAVO!!! INSPIRING ATHLETES AND ARTISTS!!!
I know what a thrill it is for a band to be chosen for the Macy's Parade. My high school band was chosen and also chosen to appear on the Good Morning America show. When you are the best damn high school band (at that time) you also get chosen to do special things! It was a thrill, as an alum to watch our band on TV!
This is true pride and accomplishment. These college young Pele will go far. Incredible spirit.
I just realized their marching form is different. I've marched in bands with the rolling method (heel first) and high-step. These guys are toe first.
Proud to be an Ohioan!!
Love this so much fun and talent!
That was pretty damn exceptional!
Made me love this band even more.
BRILLIANT!!! Truly the Best Damn Band In The Land, and this documentary captures it perfectly. Thank you for making this!
What a joy to watch!
Absolutely bloody brilliant
I was the only Tuba Player in my high school for four years..... never experienced the marching band part..... sad to say... But my wife's niece has a daughter at Kansas State...who plays the TUBA.... there is almost a generation of time between us, but we share the love of playing the tuba..... I'm 75 years old now, but still remember playing RUNS on the tuba in band. Enjoyed doing concerts especially during Christmas time at grade schools.... Still remember coming back from an Xmas concert on the bus. And hearing the bus driver saying "WOW that kid on the TUBA was GREAT....
That was EXCELLENT, and I am Michigan fan....but, first and foremost, I was a high school band parent and LOVED it
I am a long-time Michigan fan. Watching this, I almost feel like an Ohio St. fan. Almost. . . . almost.
you shouldnt admin to to being a xichigan fan ever. never. just keep it to yourself.
Fascinating, really fun to watch, yet so different to Europe.
What a great experience for these young people !,,,,
Wish they would show halftime band show.
Did I understand correctly, everyone every year has to audition? Juniors seniors aren’t automatically in??
@@andyhavens I had no idea!! Thanks for the info. I was impressed before with the band but I’m seeing so many things about them....♥️
@@68hitnmiss76 I did Script Ohio, but in HS. It is not actually that hard, mostly following the person in front of you. You just have to be precise at the cross-overs and trust your bandmates to be precise as well.
Hey, no one interviewed the travel agent. Someone had to manage the logistics of their trips.
The story of Thomas Unger is the dot of the i in this film. Ohio. Thank you Ohio State News! GO BUCS!
They’ve accomplished more in these tryouts than I have in my entire life
The newest Olympic sport...Band Camp!
That was awesome!!! Wouldn't mind seeing one every year!!
Easy to see why they have always been considered the premiere marching band in all the world...
I'm not even American, or ever been in a marching band since we didn't have those in Canada, but I fell down the Rabbit hole of this particular marching band. Loved this documentary and learning about something I didn't even know about. These people were in college when I was (:
These kids are out of their minds. I love it.
I lovvvvvvve TBDBITL soooooooooooo much, but just have one question: During the ramp entrance (and at other times), the band members tap their chest. Does that have any significance, and if so, what?
I love TBDBITL. I enjoyed this so much.
I too, want to see the bands.
I totally agree this is the best marching and the best musical band in the land.. Best quality sounds. And best in visual effects
Enjoyed watching and reliving many fond memories! O-H! #TBDBITL X-Row, 1977-81. 🎺 #GoBucks!
