I also think part of the reason why Mattel refused to feature Barbie in Toy Story 1 is that Pixar pitched her character as this ultra tomboy Sarah Connor style character at one point and Mattel, in the mid 90s? At the height of Barbie's ultra popularity as ultra feminine and girly? It would have definitely been a huge No from Mattel who wanted to protect her brand and image especially for a small start up production.
Also I think Mattel leans into the fact that none of the Barbies with speaking roles in Toy Story movies are based on actual dolls is because they really need to have her be a blank slate and again protect her brand. Tour Guide Barbie and the TS3/4 Barbies are heavily emblazoned with Toy Story's logo, and you can't really pinpoint which exact Barbie Toy Story 3 is based on since her hairstyle, skin tone and face paint points towards the later 90s but her outfit is Great Shape Barbie's with the accessories swapped out. And you can't even pin it down as Pixar just fudging details because Ken's outfits and such are so heavily researched and accurate as well.
Giggles McDimples, the Polly Pocket type, actually has several toys like a talking version and she's an exclusive figure in the action figure "Adventure Pack" with Bo Peep, Forky, Woody and Buzz, plus apparently she's getting a police badge compact playset too.
Also I guess Polly Pocket isn't safe to produce anymore cuz my Mattel Giggles figure has a MASSIVE head in comparison to my Polly Pockets, and the Adventure Pack Giggles is a better scale to Polly BUT lacks any articulation unlike Polly Pocket's midsection. Other modern toys Polly Pocket's size don't have the midsection joints that kids could pull apart and eat I guess.
Plus with Mattel trying to reboot Polly Pocket rn with her new established personality, having Toy Story giving her a story arc and personality divorced from the reboot could have made Mattel nervous about brand integrity again.
Jawn Pickles Jawn Pickles Oh I didn’t know that about the Sarah Connor type! That kind of makes sense why Bo Peep is getting that whole Rey from Star Wars treatment now. Maybe they’re just reusing the concept. Something that confused me in Toy Story 3 was that Ken had a Dreamhouse, and then I realize they just made one up for the movie. It’s weird how they were so consistent with his clothing and model, but are vague with Barbie, but the blank slate Barbie idea makes sense.
Jawn Pickles I totally agree with you. When ken was showing his outfits in TS3 I noticed the campus/college outfit seemed a lot like a late mid 90s ken fashion avenue line of doll clothes. Other like “cool times” and “flower power” were referenced too
I always thought Mattel refused to allow Barbie in TS1 because they didn’t want her to have any kind of fixed personality in general that may stick with her. I never knew they’d pitched a tomboy personality for her to have in the movie, or that it even went as far as developing a personality for her in the movie. That’s really interesting. Thank you for that info!! I love Bo Peep, I love Tour Guide Barbie, and I love the character of Barbie in TS3, so I guess they made the right decision lol.

Bo Peep was part of a lamp... Mind = Blown. I did not notice that before. I agree that it would be cooler if more real-life toys and brands were in the movies, but I also understand if Disney would want to make up their own toys that they can then market without paying licensing fees to other toy companies.

My dad had a cowboy doll that was based on the Lone Ranger, and I remember seeing TS1 and thinking, That looks like Dad's old doll. It was manufactured in 1938 and the head, hands and boots were composit wood while the body was stuffed with sawdust.

I haven’t seen the trailer with gabby gabby yet, but as soon as I saw a picture of her, I immediately knew who she was. My grandma got me one from a yard sale when I was maybe 6 years old. She told me that she got it for me because of how much she wanted one when she was growing up, but her family couldn’t afford one for her. It creeped me out so much, that I wouldn’t even bring it into my room. And I LOVE dolls. I have all sorts of dolls now as an adult. I collect all kinds of toys, but I would never get another chatty Kathy lol

I loved the Billy Blastoff toy! Fun fact: Buzz Lightyear’s name is based off the name of Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Lightyear was something to add onto the space theme by adding a space term.

They likely avoid too many branded toys because they must pay them rights for that identity if it's too close. Barbie probably already has an agreement legally with Disney, as the production company creates a number of princess dolls, but it could just be they dont want to over saturate with obvious product placement?

If you watch the clip (or see the movie) when Giggles meets Woody, you can see she comes out of a little fold up house that looks just like the original Polly Pocket’s houses (I know because I have played with my sister’s Polly Pockets), so I definitely think she was based off a Polly Pocket based on her house, the shape of her, and her size.

Buzz is actually based off of a bunch of childhood toys that the producers had and what it is based off of a talking Casper doll that was one of the producers toys when he was little
They wanted to make parody’s of those real toys because they wanted the characters to have originality and character behind them. The reason why Matel didn’t allow Barbie in the 1st Toy Story was risk of damaging her brand and personality by being all flirty and having a love interest other than Ken. This could have been something similar as being that toy makers didn’t like Pixar’s vision of the character, so they also didn’t allow it. I like them using a mix of real and original toys because it’s like new toys coming out. If Andy had a bunch of known toys, it wouldn’t be as realistic.
I also thought Giggles McDimple was an obvious PP due to her compact. Total giveaway. Thanks for the Chatty Cathy ref, I was trying to think of a vintage original like her.

Gabby Gabby looks MUCH more like the doll "Cinnamon, Velvet's Little Sister" with her dress style, face sculpt and reddish hair, IMHO. As for barbie not being in the first movie, I think the reason wasn't just money for Mattel; the movie mostly takes place in two boys' bedrooms. Andy's little sister was in infancy, so a Barbie with all her tiny parts would have made no sense in their house. As cool as it would be to have been so inclusive back then, you KNOW they would have made some heavyhanded excuse for her being there, like having been forgotten there after a friend came for a birthday party or something.

Speaking Of Puppets Woody Was Originally To Be a Vintage Vanquilist Dummy In The Early Production Of Toy Story But he Has To Be Change Because It’s Creepy
I have seen Chatty Cathy dolls in the windows of an antique store in Zionsville, IN in her box. They fascinate me. I've always been the kind of toy collector that prefers plushies & plastic figures, so talking toys are fun to see in other places.
I think part of the reason they changed the toys a bit is both because the toys won't make as much sense if the viewer isn't familiar with them, and because the fictional backstory allows Pixar to craft a strong thematically appropriate backstory for the story they want to tell, rather than relying on someone else's canon. Plus the modified designs are, in my opinion, more visually pleasing. The designs may also allow for a greater depth of emotion and general range of movement - something you want in order to tell a story as well as possible
Good intro and good information, but can't shake that you still got to the main subject of your video at the half way mark.
The reason they couldn't use Evel Kinevil would be they would have to pay the family royalties.
I feel the reason behind gabby gabby having dummy's/ slappys is to spook viewers. It is basically creeping them out in the trailer to make them seem like the villains, with gabby gabby, but they (MAY) end put helping in the end. The Toy Story franchise/ Pixar seems to enjoy people needing to find the answer to the story. They have tricked us with villians before (I forgot the toy obsessed guys name) by using the ... underminer? I dont remember his name well but he was with jessy in toy story 2 . I have a feeling gabby gabby, being talkative may have some gossip to tell woody and the gang. This could totally be wrong. I haven't seen the movie, but I think this may be a good idea of the dummy's.

Just a little trivia, while the troll dolls were popular in the 80’s, I remember those cute yet creepy little doll as far back as the early 60’s when I was growing up. I was even given one but to be honest, I was a bit conflicted by it because even as a preschooler I found them unsettling yet sad. To translate it in kid-speak, “It looks ookie”.

Woody representing what the old “cool” toys used to be (Gabby Gabby is very interested in Woody because they are both drawstring dolls which were wildly popular). Drawstring vs Battery
Slinky's design is actually really accurate to the real one, I don't know how old is the yellow slinky toy you used in the video but as far as I know Pixar used an already existing design

Officer Giggles McDimples is paired with Bo Peep in some of the new toys they're making for the movie. Also, the character choices they made for her like the fact that she's an officer really makes it seem like something that would ease tensions between her and Woody and her and Bo because it's something they have in common or because it reminds them of someone. It seems like they made that choice more for the script.

Duke Caboom reminds me so much of the early childhood memory of playing with my neighbors Evel Knievel toy! We all took turns scraping our knuckles on the sidewalk winding up the toy trying to get the motorcycle to launch! Good times.😂
I had an Evel Knievel doll and bike set as a kid growing up in the 2000s. It was from my dads own childhood. Some of best memories are me and my dad building ramps out of random household objects to see if he'd go over them and do stunts. I remember the doll would go up off the bike or do flips as part of it.
Buzz Lightyear is actually based on the 1964 G.I. Joe action figure.
Like you said before I think Officer Giggle McDimples was gonna be merchandised. She comes with the Bo peep Funko pop and is part of the Toy Story 4 mystery minis series. Not to mention that countless plushes and toys made by Disney to be sold at stores and parks.
i think maybe why mattel didnt do a polly pocket of officer mcgiggles is because theyre doing a re-launch of the original polly pockets for the 30th anniversary and wouldnt want children confused

HOLY wow! This is so interesting. I didn`t ever knew, that these toys in The Toy Story movies where insprired by Real toys from The Real life! And some of Them are creeping me out too! (I almost begin to Think, that my toys are evil now, :-O). I`m probably going to look different at The Toy Story movies from now on. Yikes!
