Is Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi REALLY That Bad?!

- Today, we venture back to what I believe is the worst Dragon Ball Z game of all time. Ultimate Tenkaichi is an insult to the very series it stems from and is purely fun to watch... not play. Is it truly that bad? Well, you know the answer.

Buying this game without knowing anything about it beforehand other than it having Tenkaichi in the game felt like the ultimate betrayal as a kid 😭
I remember hoping they had showed off the game badly and that the character Roster was better than it actually looked. Disappointment in its finest. Didn't stop me from completing the game though
That happened to me. It is like they decided the rock paper scissors mechanic in budokai 3 was cool and made that an entire game. It looks flashy, but playing with it is awful.
Thank god i knew as a kid theres no fucking way the released a fighting game with no fighting
Facts 😤😭😂😂😂
On god
Never forget that they had you fight Giant Metal Cooler, when Cooler isn't even in the damn game.
Yup 👍🏽
Worse. A friend of mine got the Collector's Edition that came with a Gohan statue. Adult Gohan isn't in the game.
@@seb24789 how is a main character not in the game? So Gohan isn’t in the Buu saga in UT?
@@seb24789 not quite the same but Slug is in the Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans OVA but not In Raging Blast 2.
FUCK THAT BOSS FIGHT
I remember wanting this game, my best friend at the time got it day one and invited me over, we both literally were so hype we were told to be quiet, then we played it.... First time I learned not to be hype for games
Ultimate Battle 22 did me in man. I feel that pain my man
@@adammatis5527 I'm so sorry that game is pain..
Facts
This is the boss I gave up on. Just didn't have it in me anymore. Never touched it again.
It's not as bad as the Dragon ball evolution psp game
Lets not forget how OP Piccolo was in this game as well when you had to unlock super saiyan lol...when I was a kid I legit almost cried because I couldnt beat him😂
Vividly remember this
Same. Ost was fire tho
I think the worst part is that his cutscene special beam cannon did damage to you, in fact, you could die from it. This made it worse because of the difficulty spike that the fight suffers from.
Oh no, please not those memories again. NOOOOOOOOO
i remember this
The one good thing I remember about this game was the visuals.
It's still nuts to me that it took until Fighter Z, 7 years after Ultimate Tenkaichi came out, for us to get a better looking Dragon Ball game. Then Kakarot a while after that.
Even then the visuals still hold up a decade later and it blows my mind. So much hard work from the artists and graphics team for such a steaming piece of crap.
Well they reused the raging blast models, which was a good series unlike...ultimate Tenkaichi 💀
Eh, I still think Burst Limit is the best looking DBZ game.
@@nicksrandomreviewsI think the lighting effect is awful most of the time. Scenarios look great tho.
@@nicksrandomreviews lol
@@nicksrandomreviews yea but that wasnt as good as the raging blast and tenkaichi games
This was the first DBZ game that I didn't want. As a kid I would want to buy any dbz game I saw, but this made me actually look more at reviews. Also, don't forget this game was designed by data they got back from fan surveys; this is the most control the fanbase had in voice what they wanted
In 2004, I bought Final Bout over Budokai 3 XD. So is Ultimate Tenkaichi worse than final Bout or Ultimate Battle 22?
@@rcarfang2 Wow, that's fun memory to look back on 😅. I didn't like U22, but I was a dumb kid and it was too hard. Can't say anything about Final Bout
@@supersayinmaster Final Bout is playable. Every time you do a special move, the computer counters with its own special move.
Which is why fans don't create video games.
Dbz fans deadass say "I want a QTE every second! Hell, I don't even want to play the game!"💀
I grew up on Budokai and eventually Budokai Tenkaichi.
Budokai 3 to this day is still my favorite. That being said, when the ads for this game came out, it was like somebody took the dragon rush mechanic from Budokai 3 (which I hated since it was all luck), and made an entire game out of it.
Budokai 3 is my favourite as well, high five!
Budokai tenkaichi 3 was the goat
@@DonKrieg-382and now it finally rests w the new best db game, SZ
I have a soft spot for this game it was the first game I ever gotten a platinum trophy in and played a lot of it and the soundtrack was absolutely phenomenal
There are also mechanics in this game that people wants in the next xenoverse game
“Soul crushing” is exactly how I felt when I got this game. I remember being SO disappointed, and same as you, I really tried to like it and get the most out of it, but man, what a bummer this game was.
Did you just not watch a single video of the game before it came out?
Nah I remember just seeing it on a shelf at a Walmart, and I was such a Dragon Ball diehard, I bought it no questions asked. I learned a valuable lesson. I think this was the first time I was this disappointed in a Dragon Ball game.
I got this game cause I wanted to make my own character. However, this game plays itself. Should have had RAging blast two but with an actual story mode.
But hey. At least Tenkaichi 4 announcement is made up for it right?
This was the first game Dragon Ball game that came out when I finally got a current gen console. I grew up with the Budokai games and at the time I was still loving and playing Tenkaichi 3. Man it was it really depressing to hear how bad it was.
When I was a kid I preordered this game in hopes it would be like a Budokai Tenkaichi 4 🥴🥴
I played it for the first like 2 days and then had my mom return it
I’m here from the future to tell you that your wish will be granted with a BT 4 in the works.
I really hope they do this right and make the return of Budokai tenkaichi worth it. @xanderx9988
@@xanderx9988 gt and movies in the game it coming out in a couple of days
This is like the first dragon ball game ive ever played like 6 years ago and loved it
Eww
While the gameplay mechanics were less than desirable i did love the created player mode and I feel it was the catalyst that inspired at least partially the creation of xenoverse.
@@ssjgabe5383 funny how your hair changed when you transformed but it doesn't do that in xeno
I truthfully really did enjoy this game when I was younger. I loved the custom story, character creation, the boss fights, the master system. I even enjoyed the fighting system, it felt pretty strategy based…excluding the 50/50 scenarios.
Same here man.
Same it was one of my favourites
Loved the custom story! Exactly why I love it
Felt this I had no other dragon ball game got hella good wit the combat even beat the main story. Game was fun as a kid
I did too it was easy enough for my 7 year old brain, and I still play the ost every now and then banger in that right
So glad I only bought Tenkaichi 1,2,3 (and the OG Budokai 1,2,3 games) This one looks like the combat got stripped back HARD
Edit: Its cool to see you talk briefly on Xenoverse 1,2 as well because I'm currently playing through Xenoverse 1 again (its pretty damn fun and the combat is not too shabby)
Infinite World and Burst Limit were great too and the same goes for the PSP games...minus DB: Evolution.
This was coming out around my birthday and I used my one gift on this 💀I was crushed
I loved this game as a kid, hero mode and the impact and destruction of supers had my little brain going crazy.
Unpopular opinion ... i liked it
One dope thing is that when you pick a mentor, your basic combos change to their combos. Would've loved to see this in xenoverse
As a kid I absolutely adored this game but it all makes sense now
Yes, I can definitely say I feel nostalgic towards this game as It was the last game along with Raging Blast 2 that I played on Xbox 360 before I moved onto the Xbox One then a year later onto the PS4.
And I played a crap ton with this game. I can’t exactly describe in full detail why I kept playing this game every day before I left the Xbox 360, other than with this phrase “It’s so bad that it’s good” to which is a phrase I usually hear with certain movies. That’s the best in how I can explain it on how I feel with Ultimate Tenkaichi. It’s not actually good, But I can’t help myself from being willing to play it back then.
Though I obviously don’t play it anymore so that feeling is gone other than the nostalgia I have for it.
I'd still play it to this day. The online mode surprisingly was full of life. Even through 2016 and 2017.
I really dont get the hate, the game was fun af
Is anyone gonna talk about the fact that he says "rock, paper, scissors SAYS shoot!"
This game is what introduced me to dragon ball and for that it'll always have a special place in my heart. I loved it as a kid, until I played Xenoverse.
This was my first Dragon Ball game and I was so stunned by the visuals that I loved the hero mode and was on it almost all the time especially the boss battles
I'm so sorry to hear that
@@Wavedashnoir I still do enjoy the hero mode aspect and I can stomach the trash gameplay to see my character shoot strong blast and punch hard lol
Hero mode was sick espcially when you go super saiyan while training with piccolo
Hero Mode and the graphics were the only positives.
Some of us started with Budokai 1, some of us started with Tenkaichi 1, you started with Ultimate Tenkaichi, feel for you man.
11:46 To be fair, the RPS element was first introduced in Budokai 3 via the Dragon Rush mechanic. You could negate someone's whole super move just by guessing the same button. To your point, it seemed like they were copying ultimate ninja in that game too. The problem started earlier than people realize
Funny thing is I actually liked this game and had good memories with it
There is a glaring flaw about the story mode’s presentation. They reuse some of the voice clips from Raging Blast while adding new dialogue.
It clashes a lot since characters like Kid and Teen Gohan, Frieza and most of the Ginyu Force have different voice actors between this game and RB1
I don't like playing rock paper scissors to see who wins but like how it was the first dragon ball game where you can create your own character and they had a pretty good story for it
I confused this one when i meant to buy raging blast 2.
The pain was real.
I remember seeing screenshots, thinking it looked cool but kinda weird with the visuals/HUD, then I went to a friends house to play when it came out and JFC, it’s terrible. Easily on the level of Taiketsu
Taiketsu wasn’t that bad
@@sasuke082594 I mean I think it’s probably the worst DBZ fighting game personally lol
Love these videos Matty! Thanks for posting another one and take care of yourself!
Ultimate Tenkaichi for me is a guilty pleasure. I genuinely enjoyed the game. As bad as that is to say, the Hero Mode was so good. The giant battles were pretty fun. I really didn't mind the guessing game. I don't know, it was just really fun for me. And A BANGER soundtrack
Budokai 3 had a similar thing with Dragon Rush where if the opponent hit the same button as you they would counter but that was one mechanic. It wasn't like 75% of the combat. That's kinda funny to think about when you see this game
Honestly I really like this game even though I played the other Tenkaichi games don't get me wrong the combat is kind of dumb but the way the story is presented you can create your own character and the story of your own character is really cool the boss fights the action sequences within the combat like the destructive environments and the fact that they stay that way is really cool the beam struggles the way the game just looks in general is really good I think if they wouldn't have dropped the ball with the combat it would have been probably better than xenoverse 1 at least
I agree the sound track was 🔥 to imo
@@NMbones98 agreed
This game was ass there’s no justifying it, nobody buying a game for a soundtrack we want GAMEPLAY
@@JustSendMeLocation eh I enjoy it when I played it I'll have to play it again but nah from memory it wasn't a bad game
@@LordSiah it was definitely a bad game, it’s literally rock paper scissors it’s like you’re not even playing the game, I remember buying it as a kid with my brother lol we played it for a day and we’re so pissed off we returned it and got mk9, I love dbz but ultimate tenkaichi sucked.
What a plot twist that Matty would self-report as being "that" customer. I remember a local game store where I live had to put up a sign about people who did that stuff that said "We are not a rental store. You buy a game, you keep it."
it’s weird looking back at this bc it was my first dragonball game that was like my own I owned and I loved it at the time and would beg my older brother to play it with me and I have a ton of fun memories but i’m sure if i were to go back to it now it would be awful
Never played it but this battle system sounds absolutely fantastic, watching the npc doing all the cool stuff while you just watch and press sometimes a button sounds like a dream come true.
you might aswell hit the pause button on your remote once in a while, while you watch a episode of dbz. you will get about the same experince.
@Junan LMMFAO 🤣😂🤣
Good joke, bro.
Not at all. It might as well be a fkin "TellTale" game 🤦🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
I think you're trying to be sarcastic... can't really tell since it sounds like you're making fun of the game but then also feels like your true feelings at the same time. I sincerely hope you are being sarcastic as this was the worst DB game most of us have EVER played and the publisher should erase it from all shelves, second hand stores and store fronts - it was really that bad!
I remember the discussions and arguments I had with people before this game came out. The immense disappointment I felt when I saw the gameplay was just... ugh. It was also what caused some of the arguments that I ended up having with people. It looked incredibly dull, and nothing I saw in the trailers was encouraging me to get hyped. If anything, it felt like the more I watched, the worse it looked. Thankfully I stuck with my gut and didn't buy it. I have no regrets about that decision whatsoever.
The only thing that makes me nostalgic about this game is reading so many comments that shared the exact same disappointment I felt at the time. I grew up on the Budokai series, I just started my work career at the end of 2011 and with my first ever paycheck...This is the game I bought.
It was a bit weird that the game was barely promoted, I think I'd seen like 1 ad for it, and ofcouse I too assumed this would be technically "Tenkaichi 4".
I remember clearly coming home after purchase, firing up the Xbox at around 8PM after supper...Here we go...
And while I don't remember my word for word thoughts, I distinctly remember looking at the screen during a battle with a look of confused disgust.
Seeing the idea of your own created saiyan was SUPER intriguing at the time, I was filled with ideas of creating fan fiction characters, The son of Raditz, Vegeta's older brother etc. And I don't know how long or how far that concept would have gone but I didn't stick around long enough to explore it. I played the first session for about 2 hours before quickly ejecting the disc, then I think I gave it a retry a few days later for MAYBE half an hour at most, that was all I could bare of it... then I never saw it again until the day I picked it up to trade in at my local store.
Well, hey, atleast it's now 12 years later in 2023 and we're on the horizon of getting the proper successor to Budokai Tenkaichi 3.
So. How you feeling about the announcement of Budokai Tenkaichi 4?!
I saw the trailer for the game when I was in 11th grade and was excited by the graphics, the creation mode, and the boss battles. I watched gameplay and read reviews and knew not to expect much. Unfortunately, I wanted to get the game, the Christmas after launch so my dad bought it for me at full price. I enjoyed it for the aforementoned aspects but it was not worth $60.
I remember my friend letting me borrow this back in high school.....I was disappointed deeply disappointed
It’s funny that this was probably my favorite dbz for a long time. It was due to the fact you could create your own character. Also the destruction and visuals were amazing for the time.
Got it as a gift for my birthday, played for about an hour, and I was pissed. Never played it again. Terrible game.
Never got a chance to play this game, so thanks for the summary. Really enjoyed the review, you have a good personality.
I've been playing DBZ UT very recently and even still right now, personally I'm glad it is the way it is, to me I love it much more than I did in my childhood.
I'm aware some are not a fan of the rock-paper-scissors "battle mechanic", and while granted in online PvP I could understand, you can actually predict the opponent and/or burst your ki to throw the rock-paper-scissors out the window.
I can accept that the general consensus is that this is a low point in Dragon Ball videogame history but I seriously love it, if you're looking for very casual gameplay THIS is it.

Some bosses you couldn't predict. Some were random.
Raging blast 2 had the most potential and the worst marketing ! They need to just make 3 and take everything they’ve learned
The best exploit on this game is to dash behind them and hit them from behind. Instant easy combos and no rock paper scissors when you do it.
And these guys are making sparking zero …. Hell yeah
I remember hating this game so much😂
is Wii Party better than Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi
As a kid I really had fun with this game
I remember being so excited I buying this and when I went home to play ....💀💀💀💀
I wish I Got Raging blast 2 and they were next to each other when I was buying 😭😭😭💀
Don't bother with this one I couldn't even beat the first boss
I remember I gave myself the BIGGEST pat in the back when I passed the the Metal Cooler big boss QTE. As a kid that was one of the hardest qte experiences I had 😮💨
Storm generations is the equivalent to this game for the Naruto franchise
This was my first dbz game, and I remember enjoying it, but then I realized it wasn't that good until I played XenoVerse
I vaguely remember this game, but I think I was satisfied because there was character creation although it was limited
Your commentary is amazing 😂
i too was a budokai tenkaichi fan who got conned into this. gave up on it at the great ape baby fight
I didn’t know i needed to play a DragonballZ PeePeePooPoo Man until now 😭🔥🔥🔥🔥
As much as I was disappointed with this game when I first got it, I will say that the level of customization you had for your created character and the original story was my most fondly remembered aspects of this game.
Agreed 100%. I firmly believe Xenoverse would SKYROCKET if it took some inspiration from Ultimate Tenkaichi in terms of character customization
@@dannyman808 does xenoverse have a million more options than UT?
When I played this game for the first (and only) time, I only played hero mode and I was like "as soon as I finish the tutorial this will get good" "I can't wait to finish the tutorial to kick everybody's ass" "oh no! this is not a tutorial, that's the gameplay" "what? I can't even fly to wherever I want during combat"
I lost so many matches just because I pressed the wrong buttons. It was so repetitive, so tedious, so boring I only played for like two days and returned it. visually looks good, except for the super saiyajin, it looks to greenish, and the roster was probably small, I don't remember, as I say, I only played hero mode.
when i was a kid i found out that if you got a fighting style where the charged ki blast had good enough tracking you could fly up as high as you could and spam charged ki blast. the cpu would never fly up to get you and you could cheese them.
With videos like this, you'll always find the younger people or less fortunate people who had no choice but to enjoy the game. I bet there's some cool aspects to the game
Battle of Z was way worse. It actually killed my passion for games.
This and resident evil 6 are the reasons I do not ever pre-order games
This actually was a game I enjoyed at the beginning but the moment we reached the cell saga was when I think the devs just gave up and rushed it out.
Great video dude❤
is Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games better than Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi
This and Battle of Z dissapointed me the most out of the xbox 360 and ps3 Z games.
i traded a friend multiple xbox 360 games for this game on the ps3 and i couldn’t get past the fight with great ape vageta. every time he’d squeeze goku, i could never mash the button fast enough to break free
Great video man. I am on a DBZ Marathon right now, reliving all the classics and this helped me stay away from a terrible experience. The rock paper scissors mechanic is what I hated so much in Budokai 3 (known as Dragon Rush there), which was really sad to me because everything else about this game is amazing, but everytime the AI drags me into Dragon Rush, I feel like rage quitting.
It's a shame really.
I finally played all the way through this game a few months ago(well, 80-90% of it at least).
If they removed the Rock, Paper, Sizzors from the game, it'd actually be good.
Also, on the topic of character customization...
This game has 3 things people have begged for in Xenoverse since the 1st game.
1. Customizable Aura's.
The ability to have a firey, green aura is sick.
2. Customizable Combos.
You can pick what characters fighting style you want to use, which is cool(it barely altered gameplay, but it looked cool).
3. Different Skill Sets depending on your Transformation.
Having 2 separate Skill Sets was cool, and basically meant you could carry double the skills.
One thing I really hated about the combat in this game was the spirit gauge and how it controlled your battle options, like if you wanted to do certain attacks it would consume spirit gauge or how you needed sg to dodge, block or counter npcs super attacks instead of just being able to y’know move out of the way. Also I’m a huge ultimate ninja storm guy I still play some w my homies every now and then and yes it does have pretty simple combos, you just spam circle but even though certain aspects of uns combat system are simple, they’re well thought out and combine together to make you feel like a magic ninja wizard. The game encourages you to play fast and cautious, and because of how the simple combat works together with the movement options and how that works together with the blocking mechanic and how that ties to substitution- there’s so much room for variation and creativity that players often have different strategies and fighting styles literally no two matches are the same but ultimate tenkaichi’s gameplay mechanics work against immersing you in the game, after every 5 hits an unplayable cutscene triggers, you can’t spam super attacks, the spirit gauge feels like a grind and more of a punishment than a cool game mechanic and the tactical nature of the game is mainly presented as mini-games and qte’s. It’s not the worst game ever but it’s somewhere on that list
You should play Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines. I think you said in an older video talking about the sequel that you haven't played the original.
Here's my idea to how Ultimate Tenkaichi Coulda been great:
1. Just recycle the same fighting mechanics from Raging Blast 2, and tournament mode.
2. For the rock paper scissors stuff, make it done sparringly filling up some sort of combo meter THEN the rock paper scissors combo will come out and see which player gets it right so that way it feels earned to be in.
3. Make the whole roster be from dragon ball to dragon Ball GT. ((at the time, beerus from super wasn't thought out yet.))
4. Add a special documentary movie on the history of dragon ball (kinda like the plan to eradicate the Saiyan's movie but instead it's a how dragon ball is made documentary)
5. OPTIONAL: name the game: Raging Blast 3.
We had custom characters way before this. It's the first time the West was able to have something like this.
Because Dragon Ball online was the first. In fact it was the first time Towa and Mira showed up. Way before Xenoverse was conceived.
my memory is a little fuzzy on the exact spelling of the last name but i had an art teacher in highschool with the same last name as your in game character. not sure if that’s your actual last name but it’s a nice thing to imagine
I will defend this game I really feel like the "rock paper" isn't really the way to describe it its actually a little calculated
2:30 I remember I had a game that I beat and returned and I didn't tell them in the return. Later while I'm looking for another game the cashier asks me about the game I returned and I said I beat it, then he tried the whole "oh well you can't return something just cause you best it you have to not like it or it has to be damaged" so I hit him with the "I beat it and I don't like it anymore"
I remember this exact feeling growing up.. and at 30 yrs old im like maybe i just didnt know wtf i was doing... nope that was literally the game... Rock Paper Scissors
This game actually uses a modified Dragon Ball Raging Blast 2 engine for how the gameplay works. In Japan, this game was called Dragon Ball Ultimate Blast as it's technically the unofficial third game in the Dragon Ball Raging Blast series, even using the same gameplay engine, characters, and animations. They only had to modify the animations for this game or create new animations for the Dragon Ball GT Characters and the giant bosses for the boss fights. Also, this game came out on October 25th, 2011, so it did not come out in 2012. However, this got released twice as it was reused for Dragon Ball Z For Kinect on Xbox 360 which was released on October 9th, 2012. So, instead of a controller being used, you use your entire body for everything including story mode, hero mode with your custom character, and co-op. What's funny is that Dragon Ball Z For Kinect has an exclusive character to the game that isn't available in Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi: Super Saiyan Bardock.
Been addicted to ur dragon ball Z content lately like back in the day when I was watching you platinum fallout 3
I'll never forgive the mind behind this combat system. Till the day I die I will never forgive them. This game could've been the Tenkaichi 4 we'd always wanted. The graphics were there, a form of create a character was there. But it was just full of fuck
I fuck with it. 100% as a kid when I struggled with the quick time button mash events
I remember this game and the betrayal I felt the only good aspect was creating the character and visuals
I thought I was playing the game wrong when I was a kid.
What I love about it the first thing is its OST's especially the intro one (Adventurous Spirit) damn it's so amazing I even downloaded it, then the cutscenes it's really clean, the graphic of the ki blast like final flash man its graphic is so damn raw and powerful, it's the best ki blast graphics I've ever seen better than the modern DBZ games like XV2 Or FighterZ etc.
Watching this after seeing Budokai Tenkaichi 4 announced...anyone else🖐😏
Man I use to do
That GameStop hack allll the time in highschool as well but for me the employees ended up becoming really good friends because of how often I was in there lol
I’m so pissed off because randomly at 4 am I remember the part where you power up against great ape baby but now I can’t even find the ost for it. 😭the music for this game was great even though I despised the button mashing parts for the big boss fights
Hopefully we get the essence of the bt series and the raging blast series’s with the new ideas they were gonna put in Ult Tenkaichi I liked it the small good things you could take away from this game but the potential to improve with hero mode they can be undefeated
i am literally the only person on the face of the planet who loves this game to this day.
I bought this as a kid and it was such a weird feeling thinking "this is it?" when as a kid it was always a blast with new DBZ games
Not horrible, but really under appreciated.
I really hope Matty tackles the Naruto series next. I'm interested in that series.
okay no one cares
@mangosbangos5692 Why don't you go do something meaningful with your life other than be a dick to random people online. Rhetorical question your answer doesn't matter.
While I felt betrayed with this game. I weirdly had fun moments with this game. Online was kinda fun with voice chat. And getting all they energy around the world for it. And bringing back ultimate shenron was great to see again I will admit
This game was the first I bought with my own money… really regret it
Some cpu opponents in this game only use the heavy/ or light attack In the Rock Paper Scissors segment which made them easy to beat.
Best part of this game was the presentation and music. All they had to do was copy and paste Bt3 gameplay and this could of been great.
I thought about that exact same GameStop hack before. It's pretty much infinite free used games if you beat them before the week is over
