Is Buu's Fury REALLY That Bad?!

- We have reached the end of the Legacy Of Goku trilogy. While reviewers marked Legacy Of Goku 2 as both an excellent rebound effort and the best in the series, Buu's Fury was noted as a step down. Like with the rest of this Gameboy Advance exclusive series, I took the dive back in time to find out whether or not those reviewers were actually right.

Our Legacy Of Goku trilogy is complete! What series do you want to see me return to next? Fire away! You're the reason this all exists ❤
I’m a relatively new subscriber, so I’d like to see Kingdom Hearts if you haven’t done it already.
Would love to see some Tak/Tak 2 goodness! Those two games are amazing and blew my mind as a kid. Also interested to see your take on viewtiful joe 1 and 2, never got to play those. God bless you in Jesus name matty hope you're doing well!
Mario and luigi superstar saga is a great gba rpg
Naruto ninja council would be sick. i only got to play the 3rd one on the ds
Thanks for the DBZ gba retrospective, if we're sticking to GBA for now perhaps check out DBZ Supersonic warriors to round out the GBA DBZ experience, Summon Night Swordcraft, Contra or the Mega Man Zero series.
I haven't ever heard of this game having a bad reputation and this is coming from a 20 year video game seller. It's widely considered to be a great DBZ game and has always had high demand.
Yeah I've always thought it had a very positive reputation too. I remember being 8 or 9 years old when it came out and begging my mom for it. I have very little other memories of doing that so it's kinda cool, but yeah the game is probably in my top 3 dbz games. I put so much time into it when I was a kid
1 UA-camr says LoG 2 was the best and now alllll I've been seeing this past year is how buys fury was too easy and it sucked. I love both games but I feel like buus fury was so damn fun and I replay it every now and then
It's not hated but it's always been derided as "not LoG2", also carries a lot of the typical Buu Saga stigma where the largest individual chunk of fans seems to put the Cell Saga on a pedestal and shit on Buu
I can say back when I was a kid, it did have a bad reputation in my area which was surprising because dbz was the anime and everyone here liked it but I only remember one friend liking it out of the group kids at my school. I still don't get why it had that reputation once I got to play it many years later.
it's the power of UA-camr's Charisma.
it's best to have a mind of your own rather than listen to them.
Seriously why do you think New Vegas is Hugely popular and Fallout 3 is considered garbage by comparison even though both games are pretty much fine in their own right both with their own strength and weaknesses.
or why Nintendo is mostly loved by 20+ year olds even though the games are lack luster and are mostly for children.
Why everyone thinks Digimon Survive was the worst selling Digimon game even though it sold well on steam and PlayStation (some UA-camrs believed it was only on switch)
They ain't the smartest just the most charismatic.
Who in the right mind said this game was bad 😮 am they crazy
Clickbait title
Bet they were mad.
are* they
am they crazy?!?!
@@admiralAlfonso9001 are* 😆

No one has ever said this was bad. It's arguably one of the best games for the GBA. It had bad marketing and the name change made it fly under the radar.
It never felt right being buus fury, legacy of goku iii would have worked better
@@bhunivelze420 facts 🔥
About to watch the video, but gotta say, Buu's Fury is surprisingly accurate to the anime, has a ton of content, and was one of my favorite games when I was a kid. Love that game.
The major surprise to me honestly, was when I saw Broly's appearance in this one. That _really_ threw me off.
@@LuminesBreezer-- but it’s accurate bc of the second broly movie
Unlocking Gogeta was honestly so much fun as a kid. I loved doing it so much and absolutely love this game, spent so many hours playing this game.
Nothing left to do after you get him lol
@@shulkisreallyfeelingit2251 Just to have something cool to beat the shit out of enemies Dragon Fist, and Big Bang Kamehameha
Hell yeah dude. That part was insane.
The cool thing about Fusion Reborn being in this game was that, at the time, the movie hadn't been officially released in the US yet. This game was the first time we were seeing the plot play out, and Webfoot actually based their in-game script on fansubs.
wait is that facts? thats dope as fuck if true
@@MyNameJefff Yep! Fusion Reborn came out in the US in 2006, Buu's Fury was 2004. One of the lines used in Buu's Fury is word-for-word of a famous line from the fansubs that wound up being changed in the official subs and English dub.
Lol crazy how they gave him dragon fist!
@@GamingintheAM0801 what's the line?
I know I rented this movie off of the anime end cap of my local video store in like 1999 or 2000. It was in Japanese with English subtitles, so it may have been a bootleg, though I wonder how it found its way into a chain rental store.
Buu's fury is so good! It took what 2 did to the next level! I loved that game as a kid
Unlocking Gogeta as a secret character in this game I remember very specifically haha I loved all the legacy of games so much
Played the Legacy of Goku series on the Nintendo Game Boy Advance handheld system back in my late childhood and my early teenage years in the 2000 decade while I was in middle school.
Starting at level 60 is really nice, and gets even better when you consider the fact that in Legacy 2 the max level was 50. So this is sort of an indirect continuation of levels between games and a cool way to integrate story progression into gameplay.
Imagine a remake of the entire trilogy on one package on the switch😍
Isn't a remake of this in one game basically what DBZ Kakarot is?
@@EskChan19not even close lol.
Fuck the Switch. Underpowered Garbage
@@EskChan19Hell nope

I don't normally care about if stuff is "mint conditon" but keeping a piece of fiberboard looking like that since the GBA era is pretty impressive
This was the best one in the trilogy, music and gameplay wise... whoever thinks it wasn't obviously didn't play it.
I dunno, it did seem a bit rushed, with how short it was and how many level gates there were to make the game seem longer than it was. I think LoG2 was better by a bit because it felt more natural in how it progressed. But yeah, the gameplay was better than in LoG2. Everything that was there was good, there just should have been a bit less level gates for enforced grind and a bit more actual content here.
Odd title, I have never heard of this one being bad. I actually loved it myself lol.
I've heard ppl criticize how there was doors blocking your patch all the time instead of once in a while like the Legacy of Goku 2
@@luisfilipe2747 Yeah that is a valid criticism but just because people dislike one small part of the game doesn't mean they think it's "really that bad". I do dislike that there's so many level gates but the game is still great.
If anyone wants to max level a character in this game(or all of them if you're mad like me), I would recommend getting the "GOKUU" hat before you reach lvl-100. If you wear the hat while leveling past 100 you will get an extra stat point. If you reach the max level of 200 with the hat, your stats will also max to 200 as well. I believe the "GOKUU" hat can be found in the Ninja Temple level in a treasure chest. Happy level grinding!
i remember doing something like that to try to max out the stats of everyone.
I love the scouter mechanic and how multiple characters can have more than one scouter readout depending on when you scan them. I always tried to get them all
I have so many fond memories playing Buu’s fury as a kid. I found the game to be very hard because I didn’t realize I could add to my stats. I feel like I would be punching a boss character for 15-30 minutes. Years later, I randomly played it again and I noticed the stats points and I was sweeping enemies 😂
You played it on hard mode
This was me too then when I realized I could add to my stats around fighting super gotenks buu I was unstoppable after that 🤣
Thanks for the video Matt! Unlocking Gogeta as a secret character was the best part of the end game haha loved this game so much
The only problem was, by the time you unlocked Gogeta there was nothing left to do in game as you pretty much unlocked everything at this point. In LoG 2 you could unlock Hercule and you still could level him up and then unlock secret ending, while playing as Gogeta was kinda pointless and just for fun.
While not exactly part of LoG series, GT Transformation developed by the same studio let you play entire game with various unlockable characters like Uub, Vegeta or even Baby. But LoG formula doesn't really work with "New game+" idea.
Hey Matty, just wanna say I've been a fan of your content for a long, long time. Still remember you freaking out over Fallout 4 way back lmfao. This Retro channel is absolute class and is one of my favorite channels on UA-cam period. Excellent, excellent work man. Keep it up.

I truly enjoyed Buu's Fury. As a child i didn't have much luxury so i repeatedly played certain games such as this one. I managed to figure out my own system of making the game more challenging based on the use of equipment and stat customization.
Also, i haven't seen much mention but in a few comments, another dragon ball game was made after this for GT. A review would also be really neat if possible ✊🏼
Does anybody remember the secret boss fight against Broly?! That was such an AWESOME easter egg hidden in the game, this series will always be my go to DBZ game on the GBA!
No? OMG ima go do this now
That was a secret? I thought it was required for the collecting dragonballs main story quest.
Wasnt a secret boss fight its in the main story when you collect the 7 dragonballs
There was a secret boss fight against Cooler on New Namek in Legacy of Goku 2 though
Man the infinite senzu bean glitch made so much of the grinding in my play through sad a kid bearable. Literally ate the senzu you’re supposed to get for videl on accident, finished the plot line, and next I knew I had 255 senzu beans 🤣
Huh? Lol. Never knew
@@lifeonmars03 blew my 8y/o mind man lol
This game was insanely difficult on my first 9 year old playthrough. I didn't know about character stats so I never powered up my characters. Took hours to defeat any boss.
Awe the joy of being a kid
I think this game did something cool that almost no other RPG has done.
It starts you as already having some levels, as if you are actually continuing from LOG2.
Also, Sunzu glitch is best glitch ever, fite me!
I didn't know that Buu's Fury got bad reviews, it's actually a great game and my favorite of the LoG series.
BTW I would love to see a Battle Network review :)
Aw man, I used to love Attack of the Saiyans! I'd wanna see that video for sure
Yeah, really wish they would have continued that series. Turn based RPG DBZ was really cool.
Another small mention is that the character profile pics have different emotes in certain dialogue ranging from their default happy face, to mad, to confused, and Gohan changes drastically after he gets his Potential Unleashed/"Ultimate"/Mystic form.
Nice detail really gave it more charm. I love LOG2 but the profile pics for a lot of characters were kinda funky
Another nice detail I've noticed is that when you're running from one screen to another in Buu's Fury it doesn't stop you until you quit running or hit a wall unlike LoG 2.
I remember really having a Great Time with Buu's Fury. Great Vid once again Matti!
The thing about Buu’s Fury that makes it a bit lesser than LoG2 is that, yeah, it added a ton of new gameplay elements, but it also made the gameplay itself a lot more bogged down.
Having equips, stacking SSJ forms, customizable stats, and whatnot doesn’t really help if the enemies you face are too weak to let you really make use of them. Not to mention the grind, which I assume was the byproduct of the customizable stats.
I also wonder why they removed the wall bounce. It didn’t add _too_ much to the difficulty, but it still made the combat in 2 feel more engaging as opposed to being solely A button spam. If the melee attack was replaced with a basic combo system, where every third or fourth attack had a lot of end lag (thus neutralizing A button spam), then it would have made sense. But now the player just has permanent access to the fan from SSBM. And on the topic of fighting game mechanics, some enemies are given the ability to block while the player can’t. I assume it’s due to limited buttons, but giving one side the ability and not the other is kind of a weird design choice. From what I’ve seen, enemies blocking your attacks only serve to slow down gameplay.
The youtuber Casp did a really good 26min video on all the flaws of buus fury. Basically too many level doors, and too much grinding padded out the game. Plus the mid to late game is far too unbalanced.
Attack of the Saiyans is great! Would be awesome to see that next.
Now thats a rare one. Probably my fav dbz game, just in how much it feels like the anime
If you want to make Buu's Fury even easier, when you have to go to Korin to get a Senzu Bean for Videl, eat the bean before returning. this will glitch the game and give you 225 Senzu Beans
Why only 225?
@@annedrieck7316 That's the max for an 8-bit value in hexadecimal (which is 0xFF)
@@DoctorMario606 Has nothing to do with hexadecimal, that's just a representation (in fact bits are binary, not hexadecimal). 8-Bit means you can have 256 values(with one being 0 so up to 255). Though with that the initial poster is wrong, it gives 255 Senzus, not 225.
@@annedrieck7316 A computer (which a console ssentially is) stores variables like the amount you have of an item in a so called Integer, that is basically a number represented by 8 binary(0 or 1) numbers (though nowadays it's usually 32 or 64 numbers andnot 8 but back then consoles didn't have that much RAM). The way binary works, having 8 digits means you can have 256 values. But one of these values is 0 so it goes from 0 to 255. That's why in many older games 255 is the max a number can have.
That said, if you eat the bean you now have 0 beans. Then you go talk to Videl and give her a bean. The game is coded to just do your beans -1. But you are at zero and here, computers have something called an "Underflow", which is that if you do -1 on the lowest possible number, it "Flips" all binary digits, so 0000 0000 becomes 1111 1111 which is 255. And that's why you have 255 Senzu Beans if you do this trick, because the programmers basically forgot to make the game check if you have a senzu bean and only do -1 if you have more than one.
@@EskChan19 Ah, thanks for correcting me!
what I love about buus fury is the way they try to fit the movie saga into the buu saga :D you got Fusion Reborn and Broly Second Coming in one long storyline along with Buu Saga
Man, you just brought back so many memories. I totally forgot you can fight Janemba and Broly in this game
i've started with buu's fury so imagine playing the first legacy of goku after buu's fury.. it was really a pain in the ass to finish. But i liked legacy 2, was very close in quality to buu's fury
I've literally never had a conversation about the best Dragonball game where this one wasn't brought up. The idea of it getting poor reviews is surprising and laughable.
This was basically my favorite Dragon Ball game outside Budokai 3 and Tenkaichi 2 and 3 for YEARS
This games amazing to me, it even managed to fit in two of the movies into the story
The fact Legacy of Goku 2 explained Vegeta’s absence in the Cooler film due to turning into a Super Saiyan, made me like it so much more at the time.
It is CRAZY how you’re blasting me to my past with these games man. I LOVED playing this game. I borrowed it from a buddy at school and could not stop playing it. I didn’t know ppl were saying it’s a bad game. It was amazing to a kid like me. Awesome game, awesome video.
The Legacy of Goku trilogy was my favourite series on the GBA. I'll never forget finding out about Buus fury years after playing LoG 1&2 and binging the entire game immediately. You should go over Attack of the Saiyans, I wish that game got a sequel. The Supersonic Warriors games would be cool to see an overview of
Great video! I think you'll like Attack Of The Saiyan's for the DS, the only thing you may not like is they use Japanese audio when they call out their attacks.
Kinda unique that it was Japanese audio in the US great game would’ve loved to see the names saga but kaioken goku taking out broly works😅
I am kicking myself in the balls right now. You know how many game boxes I've thrown away when I was a kid? Yeah I invite y'all to kick me in the balls too. Man I wished I hit critical thinking age earlier.
Great video, brought back some good memories.
I beat this game while on a road trip from Lexington Texas to Branson Missouri, for my brother's military graduation. I'll never forget my dad saying "what is with the button mashing"? I was at the end with buu and you had to rapidly tap A in a battle of energy. And when I said "it's the last boss"!
He said carry on. Buu was defeated eventually.
The game is great.
legacy of goku 2 and buus fury are gems. i loved these games as a kid, now im 25 bruh. time flies

If you think their bad, you clearly haven't played them. (Speaking to those rhat haven't played)
And the music is🕺.
Great video.👍
Oh I'm already in for Attack of the Saiyans
Thanks for using that remix of GT's main theme (Dan Dan), and name dropping the Faulconer tracks being remixed for the game
Something I have learned a long time ago for both movies and video games is don't listen to reviewer. Period. If you want to know how good a thing is, check the customer reviews. That will tell you what a product is really like. Most reviewers don't even finish the game they are reviewing.
I’m really glad you covered the legacy of Goku trilogy, and when you mentioned Naruto Ninja Council I got excited. I’d like to see you go through at least the first 2 of those, I grew up playing them and it would an awesome trip down memory lane
Fun Fact: Use the senzu bean before you give it to Videl. Your inventory will underflow to 255 senzu beans and you'll be set for life.
I loved Buus fury. Probably the only game I played over and over again the most. Definitely in my top 5

This game was not received negatively. It was more positive than anything else!
Yeah it just came out at a bad time a month before the Nintendo DS dropped

wow you just awoke a memory in me with those megaman games. Question about them, if i wanted to play which game should i play? i remember loving it so id love to play those again.
You ask around 16:40
“Why the name change”
If you look at how many copies, notably in NA only as well, for the first game you’d find your answer as to the name change.
While 600k+ copies sold sounds great, LoG2 was only approved because the first game sold well; over 1.2M copies if I’m remembering correct. We’re talking half the sales numbers here with a much larger budget.
Whether the devs or their publishers came up with the idea to change the name is debatable, but the reasons were purely out of mindfulness that the first game wasn’t received well and it had a huge impact on the superior second game’s sales figures.
The owners of the first game clearly wanted a DBZ game in that style on GBA… they just got so burned they would never buy another LoG game so it just got called something else to draw those fans back in since the fans who did buy the second game were also still likely to buy the third; even if it was a differently named title.
My question though, if you wanna wrack your brain for an answer, is why the hell would you buy a pristine copy in box of a game you started as not a fan of nor played as a child? If it was purely for collecting then you’d be destroying/risk destroying the value every time you looked at it funny, let alone handling and opening the box & manuals. This game as you also point out has a high price these days. As a fan myself of DBZ, I personally wouldn’t spend so much on a collector-quality item that I
A.) Planned on ever handling or opening
B.) Had never played nor thought would be fun
Most comments seem to disagree totally that this game is or ever was considered to be bad, and even though your video is high quality, I think you’d have been better off asking what we thought of the game and giving your own score/opinion without using an unpopular (and borderline false) opinion to draw more views.
Anyways that’s my two cents! Great game from this era and an excellent example of how funding as well as market reception play huge roles in the development of game series!
Buus fury is actually one of those underappreciated games one of the best DBZ games on Handheld console
people didn't like buu's fury? that's the first i heard of it...
Buu's Fury is a great game! I played it for months after getting it for my birthday. I still play it on occasion to this day.
Still remember playing multiplayer during lunch at school. Good times.
I would love a hd remaster of all the Legacy of Goku and Buu's Fury games!
This was literally the game that made me a DBZ fan, I remember playing this for WEEKS on Gameboy when I was young just enacting dumb scenarios. This game is childhood and it's amazing. Nobody can tell me otherwise
Just finished the trilogy myself. Buu's Fury is by far the best game. The optional stuff from LoG2 might debatably be better since you have cool stuff like Cyborg Tao, but I think the pacing, average difficulty, UI, the new equipment system and more customizability with skill points, just everything I think Webfoot wanted to do was more fully realized.
I will never forget getting this game for Christmas and like all kids I ignored the manual and just went into it. Had the hardest time with it on my first play through. It wasnt until the dragonball side quest with goten and trunks that I finally noticed the stat icon and hit A in the menu and realized I wasnt using the stats. The second I did suddenly every common enemy that was kicking my ass were going down with one punch it blew my mind. I then recall a few weeks later in the school bus another kid was having the same problem so I had to let him know! Also that sensu bean glitch makes all play throughs since just a good chill time. Love this series
Didnt even know people hated buus fury. Loved it growing up. Remember the ending button mash was pretty dam hard for kid me.
You brought up the lack of wall bounce but there are two other major issues with the balance. For one, enemies barely react to your punches and only slide back a tiny bit making it very easy to combo them. In LoG2, the fights were difficult because each hit launched them so far away that you had barely enough time to walk up and punch them again. Unless you using a really fast character, you had to have near perfect rhythm and movement to keep them stunlocked. Stat distribution is also a problem thanks to a really poor damage formula. Basically, your stats power creep themselves and the higher your stats, the more they are worth. As a result, you can just pump everything into strength and you will absolutely flatten enemies because 1 point at 120 strength is worth a lot more then 1 point at 80 strength.
As an additional note, there is pretty clear evidence that Buu's Fury was quite rushed compared to Legacy of Goku 2. Despite using mostly the same graphics, many of them have been downgraded. The character models and portraits are definitely better but the world itself took a major dive in quality. There are significantly less uses of light and shadow which include characters now using a stock circular shadow instead of a custom shaped drop shadow for each frame of animation. Water is now solid instead of transparent, you could originally see the bottom of the sea and rivers with proper foliage and everything. There also seems to be much less diversity as the same grass and dirt texture is used everywhere instead of changing them up like how LoG2 had multiple seasons and multiple variants of trees for different areas. I know I am kind of nitpicking but when you play the games back to back multiple times, you really start to pick up on the game's lack of polish.
I will admit, some of the mechanics can seem dated. But. This game is an absolute gem. It's mostly my 11 year old birthday present nostalgia talking. But I played through this one specifically for years and years.
Battle Network was such an awesome series. Loved those games! Can’t wait for the collection!
I still hate that we didn't get 4.5. Really would have had a time with that one too.
Lmfao watching the gameplay made me realize I never used the skill points when I played this as a kid 🤣
I realized it when I couldn’t pass second form Janemba
It might be nostalgia, but I love this game. Being a huge fan of DragonBall as a kid, I enjoyed grinding out my favorite characters and playing as my favorite character (Ultimate Gohan). I really enjoyed this look back at some of my favorite games and hope you continue doing more!
This is back when video game companies took pride in their product
I don't understand ... I was reading people saying the third game was very good (I have 1, it's tedious) Now it turns out it's bad... (as I supposed and that's why I didn't want the other 2) I don't understand ...

Would love to see you check out the xenoblade chronicles series, I've just bought the definitive edition for switch and am really enjoying it. I don't think you've done a vid on it yet and there are very few videos on this game in general. Keep up the good work!
Dbz: Attack of the saiyans would be pretty cool, it's a nice turn based game with interactive combat and we don't really see to many turn based DB games outside of maybe heroes and fusions.
That physical copy looks so nice. I'm jealous! Only have digital versions on my 3DS
You sir , have a beautiful Gameboy advanced. I miss mine so much.
I would love the whole trilogy remade in the style of Buu's Fury. Well, maybe Legacy of Goku should be remade completely.
I honestly love the gameboy game content and interested in naruto or dbz games. Love the content man!
I think part of the reason Buu's Fury had middling/mixed reviews is because the Buu saga wasn't really that well received whereas many fans consider the Cell saga to be the best arc in the show. Much of the Buu saga consisted of rehashed themes from previous arcs and not necessarily ass pulls but the writing got a bit sloppier than usual at times. It had big moments that the fans love but the general consensus was that it had many flaws. Reviewers could take their opinions of the Buu saga itself and project them onto a game that is simply a more expanded version of Legacy 2; it would at least explain their lack of written critiques of the game.
Loved this as a kid especially since my favorite arc for DBZ was the Buu's Saga so I would often return to Buu's Fury and play through that a bunch.
There's some tiny nitpicks you can make about how 2 does it better than BF but that's very minor. Like sure the level pacing and level gates coulda been adjusted to not be as big of a curbstomp as they ultimately are or need to level grind for gates but that's fine and we coulda kept all the locations on the mini map that you could land in but that's minor in the great picture. Still love the game to pieces regardless.
A review of the original Legacy of Goku is one of the 1st videos I made for my channel before I was spending my entire life at work lol

Buu's Fury is the best of the trilogy. I loved it so much and holds a special place in my heart.

You’ve never had an original thought
If I remember correctly, the game did not end when you beat Buu and saw the credits. There was a pretty beefy postgame with stronger enemies and I was amazed that I could get to Level 255.
Legacy of Gorky trilogy on switch would be amazing. Hopefully, all three on a cartridge.
The Battle Network series staggered not because people were sick of it, but because Battle Network 4 was so trash it completely screwed up the rest of the franchise. I'm surprised on the BN reddit how loved BN5 is, it honestly perplexes me as an OG fan of the series. When they were coming out, 1-3 was known online as the "good trilogy" and 4-6 was known as the bad one (with the exception of 6).
This game is GOAT, I sometimes download it and play it on my PC when I'm bored, because I loved it so much when I was younger
I still have this for my gameboy advance sp and im actually replaying it as we speak! Been playing it since I was a child and never stopped since. I hold this game dear to my heart and it will always be replayable for me.
I really wish we could get a sequel for attack of the saiyans on the switch!
You should do attack of the saiyans
Edit: I typed this one second before you said attack of the saiyans lol
Buu's Fury is and has always been my favorite of the three. It's definitely easier than LoG 2 (which is probably part of the reason I preferred it as a kid, though still FUCK that mission with the dinosaur's eggs) but it also changed a few of my minor complaints I had about LoG 2, specifically the SSJ transformations. I greatly preferred them having a separate energy bar between base form and SSJ/SSJ3.
Also the Buu arc has always been my favorite, so that's also probably a major factor for me
