For all these people saying these kind of books are useless: They're only useless if you make them useless. These books are about learning them, like school books. Look, if you've got a new formula in physics, guess what, the problems won't solve themselves... you've got to use them, a lot. It's not because you've learned a new formula, that you'll successfully be able to use them. The books are there, to show you how it can be done, when you use the principles in them. It's still up to you to make it happen.

I started my self improvement journey February of 2021, read my first book on this topic called Atomic Habits by James Clear. Now I'll admit self improvement really did help me change my mindset but I did notice that 1% rule I read about I'm slowly starting to slack. I did well sticking to my habits for 7 weeks but on the 8th week out of no where I suddenly don't feel like anything and now it's been 3 weeks since I'm back at my old habits. Self improvement is hard and it's challenging, just typing this whole comment out is randomly giving me a reason to give it a shot & keep trying how weird haha
Anyways if anyone has any advice or just some things they want to share regarding their self improvement journey let me know! I'd love to hear some of your experiences :)

I would go as far as unsubscribing from self help guru channels (no offense to anyone in the self help industry or to cole) but at some point I feel like there needs to be a stopping point with all the self help that your consuming. What’s the point of consuming more self help when you already know how to self help yourself? It’s already inside of you now, there’s no need to look for more of it, you got your life together so what? This is something I think we can all agree on btw, I feel like at some point we need to let the self help stuff go away. I mean who wants to be learning the same thing over and over again the next 5-90 years and doing nothing. I mean tbh I’m starting to feel a bit more comfortable in myself so there’s just isn’t any point in looking for self help anymore. There’s no point in writing motivational comments and quotes and all this type of bs. And sometimes self help takes 3 simple obvious life lesson and turning into a whole mathematical process. (Quora is a bad place for confirmation bias) When you look for too much self help, that stills signals the fact that your still insecure to yourself in a way. And when you consume too much self help, eventually your going to consume something that’s complete garbage and B.S. (nofap community, alpha male, beta male zodiac signs mentality, take cold showers everyday, grindset) it might work for them, but it might not work for you, that’s certain things you have to question to yourself sometimes when it comes to self help, there’s turd in between all of them. And have some balance. It’s okay to fap, we’re human, it’s ok if your insecure, embrace it and then it will be gone boom no more of these videos. Trust me man, you already know all of this stuff. . Dont matter if you're not practicing, you are on the way. Remember, what we hear, we think. What we think, we understand. What we understand, we speak. What we speak, we do. DUMB PEOPLE - Speak first, take action and realizing they're wrong and fookin dumb, subsequently learn from their mistakes, and wallah! They'll become more wise and intelligent than those who read self help stuffs, analyzing every situations at a time and actually having a hard time to implementing it and ain't applied to their selves.

THANK YOU SO MUCH i NEEDED THAT. Also this video is perfect along with why self-improvement is ruining your life by better ideas. Self-improvment is not a hooby itself but just a companion throughout your life. You will never be done improving yourself or discovering yourself. And like you said in aonther video: Most answers reveal themselves through doing, not thinking. So act along searching for solutions and answers. Every successful person did not become successful because they were extremly good at self-improvment but because they were good at something. For example if you are a student: Study along reading self-help books from time to time. Do not make them your first periority because self-improvment is not about much you know or understand but about how much you acklowedge the knowledge you gained and can imply it throughout time. It takes some time. Be patient and consistent. And also a great insight from a book: Do not try to change your circumstances and environment but your limitng beliefs first which cause negative thoughts and negative behaviour.

I was reading a book on homesteading, and the author (Shannon A. Hayes) had a very similar three-part list on the process of becoming a homesteader. Step one was also a process of dissociation and mourning; step two was also a learning process; and step three was also a kind of application. The difference was that skill-learning in homesteading is not passive. It was very, very active. What distinguished step three from step two was tying newfound skills to community engagement and higher values -- in other words, what made step two poisonous was not that it was inactive (because in this case it was anything but); rather, stage two was so myopically self-oriented that the people who got stuck there failed to find a positive balance in homesteading, in the long term. I agree with what you say about inaction. I find it rather frustrating when I get so pumped about doing something that I get the dopamine hit just for thinking about it and my brain somehow thinks that it's something I have already accomplished. However, thinking about it in the context of this other book had me wondering whether another part of the problem with people in your stage two might be that everything is done outside of any "real" context.
I say "people in stage two" as though I am not, myself, a person frequently stuck in stage two. *Chortles.* I keep going back to community college every few years, it seems, to pursue new interests that I never make a career out of. *Eye rolls.*

But I still enjoyed reading a short story about this guy's experience in boot camp and the strict requirements for am bed-making.

A very good film, a few years ago I fell into the trap of self-development, absorbing all the self-development books and films that fell into my hands, but the effect was opposite to the intended one because the more I absorbed the knowledge, the more I became convinced that I don't know enough to start doing anything with my life, there are no shortcuts to achieve the goal, there is only one way to success and it is daily consistent thought-out actions (Process). Like it or not, you need to start working with the amount of knowledge you currently have and develop by acting and gaining knowledge during the process, surrounding yourself with people who have already achieved this success. To give a short example: I recently accepted a job as an operator in the largest and most modern company producing battery separators in Europe and probably the second in the world, I thought that I might not be able to cope because it is the latest technology, but I decided that I would give it 100% and as it turned out, after a month I was one of the best employees in the department, having no knowledge at the beginning and gaining it consistently every day at work. Success depends on how much you are willing to sacrifice and whether you are persistent enough to survive the process of becoming the person you ultimately want to become.

This actually reminds me back to I was studying physics. I read the book, listened to the professor, I thought it all was logical and I understood it. Days passed, weeks passed and I had to apply the things I was thought. And I just couldn't because I didn't understand. I remember the words but I didn't get the clue. But up until that moment I thought I did.
The only way to really learn is to put the books aside and try to apply them. You will find gaping holes in your understanding when you do. But if you don't stop building your 'knowledge' the hidden holes continue. This means if you encounter a hole in your knowledge while dealing with something you have to learn 2 things at once. And that didn't really work out when I was studying physics.
I like Cole's video's because they are self reflections of his actions. Because he reflects I do. I wouldn't have had this thought without this video.

Take 1 good book and read it 20-50 times until the content is completely embedded in your mind. That's how ancient philosophy was taught, it's not enough to read it once and go read something else, you will not apply it and won't get anything out of it. You can read Plato or Epictetus 100 times and you will still find some reminders and some areas you hadn't noticed in which you suck.

I completely agree with wanting to improve yourself in positive aspects however many who try to find and who have found often don't even attempt to practice it because of their weak mentality. This method only works for those who are willing to make a difference in their lives instead of just nodding their heads and keep on living in ignorance.

I get it, but I disagree with a lot of it. In my experience step 2 and step 3 go hand in hand and the learning & growing is maximised through that. Don't get stuck at step 2 is super important advice, but that doesn't mean you have to step away from self help and just stick to what you've already consumed. Just make sure you're ACTUALLY consuming it properly. Also, I strongly believe that even if you are just blindly consuming self help content and not really doing any of it, you're still better off than you would be not consuming it at all. I found that just absorbing this stuff alone has made some mindset changes and acted as a positive influence on my mood and the way I view things.

    • @sin3358
      @sin3358 2 роки тому +1

I think that consumption should be done in an extremely picky manner. Everyone says to do the actions said on the books before moving onto the next one, and I can see why, but we're not all looking for the same solutions. Most people look at self help books to see ideas which can help them get better, and out of 100 ideas, it's more than normal to only find 5 of them applicable to your life. Not everyone is the same, some of these books have so much information you'd rather not even start working on yourself because it feels like a really long journey. Procrastination loves to consume us 😂

I literally just came to this revelation. I’m done reading self help books, lol because you think you’re doing something to improve yourself, but it’s absolutely worthless if you don’t apply what you read.. Go figure, lol. I went from that to reading depraved non- fiction and True Crime. I went off the deep end in other direction, lol.
I feel it’s cathartic reading depraved themes, of course, in moderation. The one I am finishing now that’s closest to “self help” is “People Can’t Drive You Crazy If You Don’t Give Them The Keys..” which is reviewed in high regard off Amazon.

Nice video. I really like when the graphics letters are booming into the video. I do think that self-helps books are a good framework to make change in your life, while being unhappy for yourself. The important thing is not to stop reading self-helps books but practice the stuff and apply deeply into a mindset and way of living. And I do agree with your thoughts, and it can be posing, at the end when you do not diversify your reading.

okay call me stupid for judging this video without watching it but I'm not gonna stop reading them and switch to fiction. prolly not in a million years. self-help book helped me tremendously.
I'm guessing that your argument might be that it's the application of knowledge that matters, not solely learning it, which I absolutely agree with, but reading-help books definitely make things more clear to you and orient you in a way especially when you can't do anything at the moment beside reading (in may I'm gonna be done with my first year of med school in France which is really competitive. so reading for some time every now and then definitely helps, giving that I can't give too much energy into starting a new business or whatever)

I spent 2 years reading self-help books and I had this sense for a while that I was being excessive with them. I read them every day expecting good results for change, but I would always go back to my old habits and ways of living. Now, I've been picky with what I choose to read for the mind. Each self-help book had different perspectives on how one should live life, and it puts me in a trap where I can't decide what my path is in life. It's really funny to me now because based on Marcus Aurelius's philosophy about avoiding a life of excessiveness, I realized I've been excessive with these self-help books on the shelf. I can't say these books are...useless because that's a little overexaggerated. It may benefit some people and not for others. They helped me get through some parts of my problems, but not all. If I didn't spend time reading a large amount, I could notice a better change in my life and avoid information overload. It makes more sense to read one book at a time and invest into its ideas first before moving on to the next one. Or I can read one self-help book that relates to me and read a fiction book just to balance out my ideas. RANGE by David Epstein, Laws of Human Nature/The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene, and technology books (simply teaching technology and not throwing in "SELF-HELP") help me form more reasonable ideas about living my life. I could be wrong, but I think the moral lesson about this topic is...choosing your information wisely and asking yourself if the information is CREDIBLE and RELIABLE for you to use in your life is something you need to think first ahead. Maybe...some of us want fast results, we want to change overnight, we want to get where we want to be (whether we think it's a week, a month, or a year); I am not sure because everyone has different reasons for reading these books; it's simply a thought. Based on Cole Hastings bias, it's a matter of taking notes of and applying what you learned from the material. Hopefully, my older brother finds out about this and avoids the trap, because he's been reading too many self-help books and he isn't applying most of what he learned in his life (not that much changed from him). Seeing his audible books filled with so many of them overwhelms me.

Self help books can become addicting because they all offer “hope” of a better life “if only you changed your mindset” so you get psychologically conned before you’ve even opened the book because you’re given what sometimes turns out to be a false promise of enlightenment.
