Once again, very classy. I hope that 'The Fridge' does see this video just so he can see he isn't just a former football player but IS STILL a special part of people's lives today as a G.I. Joe.
Being from Illinois, I was PUMPED over this figure! I actually had the chance in High School to put on his Superbowl ring and I could fit three fingers in it. Later I went on a date to in Chicago and found a BBQ joint, and there was William Perry and Steve Mongo McMichael two of my favorite Bears. Damn this brought back some great memories!
That is awesome! Thanks for sharing the memories! That's a great story about the Super Bowl ring. They attempted to make the figure's hands look a bit bigger, even though they still used the standard C-shaped hands. I think that was was appropriate for a player with famously large hands.
I was born and raised in Chicago and as a little boy I am proud to say that I saw that Super Bowl game Fridge was in with the Bears. I also was a fan with the Super Bowl Shuffle. However a double blessing was when the Fridge was reincarnated as a Joe which was my favorite cartoon and toyline at that time. I do remember the commercials for the Fridge action figure even made my own audio ad for the Fridge on my tape recorder. I truly do appreciate this video Hooded Cobra Commander you took me back to a very special place in my childhood and Fridge wherever you are get well soon and thanks for the memories. Love you Bro.
I sent away for this figure as a kid. I actually really enjoyed the fact that he was a real person. He was always a regular member of the team in almost every encounter they faced in my fantasy wars with Cobra.
Sidenote: he carried the standard issue rifle most of the time
I have loved " The Fridge " ever since he played for Clemson back in the 80s. This figure has unfortunately eluded me. Great tribute to a great player. Go Tigers!!
I'm proud to be apart of this tribute to The Fridge and I wish him the best! You bet I would stand in line at a convention to get his handshake and autograph on his filecard. Great work HCC and thank you for letting us be apart of this video.
Thank you for helping, Mike! I thought the Fridge deserved some love, and you helped make it special.
This is a really cool G.I. Joe action figure. The Fridge is a definite Must Have for all dedicated G.I. Joe action figure collector.
Dang, I forgot about many of these Joes, especially Tunnel Rat! You just jogged my memory for something I haven't seen or heard about in over 30 years. Fridge was an awesome guy - a hero to any boy old enough to know who he was in 1985.
as a Chicago kid in the 80's the fridge is my favorite football player I still have the G.I. Joe his mace and card
Saw him many times at the bar/restaurant my old man took me to to watch football. The Fridge was 300lbs and could jump onto a table from just standing. I always have a jersey in my closet.
Awesome video! As a kid was lucky enough to have a mail away example of The Fridge in my collection. Today I'm a architectural designer by trade. Every time that I have an opportunity to design a layout for a kitchenette or cafeteria... I always label the refrigerator as "the fridge". His play on the field and his inclusion on the GIJoe team forever made an impact on this impressionable child of the '80's. Thanks for posting and have a great day!
Thank you for sharing your story! Isn't it funny how these Joes influenced our adult lives in subtle ways?
I met Mr. Perry back in August 2001... We were in the Columbia, SC, Airport, and he talked more about his brick laying business then he did about his days in the NFL...
I never had The Fridge figure, but he's definitely one I'm looking to add to my vintage collection. Great video as always!
Great job telling the histories of all these figures. Well done. First time viewer (I searched for GI Joe Fridge) and I subscribed already.
A great tribute. Nice work, HCC.
Thank you!
Thank you for getting to the the Fridge
Great tribute and message to The Fridge, got me choked up.
Well done and great details as always sir. Love the work
dont forget Roddy piper exclusive
I was grown out of the action figure buying by '87, but still would take a gander at them on the shelves on occasion, and remember at the time and for years after thinking how ridiculous these outlandish bizarrely garbed figures were, but over time William "The Fridge" Perry's action figure really grew on me. His role as a PT instructor could have been fantastically plausible and I preferred figures without molded headgear. Didn't realize that he was realistically sized either which is cool. What really blew it for me was his accessory. Why didn't they give him Grid-iron's helmet, something akin to Road Pig's shoulder pads and maybe a pugil stick accessory. I think those would have rounded him out perfectly. But I guess those extra accessories would have added to the already probably inflated cost because of Perry's licensing fee.
such class acts. Mr. Perry, HCC788 and the fans...............what's that coming out of my eyes.........damn those onion ninjas. Bravo, Bravo.
Thank you, Matt. I was very appreciative of everyone who shared their memories. Perry is a man with a big heart. I thought he deserved a review that reflected that.
Your a good guy HCC....this was great and done just right.
Thank you, Matt. I tried to be as respectful as possible, since we're talking about a real person here.
Always like The Fridge. 72 was my birth year!
You gave me foggy eyes again HCC. Nice message, and a comprehensive review, well done.
Small personal story here:
I'm Hungarian and my best friend in elementary school in the late '80s was an American-Hungarian kid. We played a lot of G.I. Joe together and watched American team sports - both of which were huge novelties in our country. Both of us were a bit chubby so we could easily identify with the Fridge and became fans. When he later moved back to the US with his family he gave me a good bye present, and it was a t-shirt with the Fridge on it. I remember I worn that t-shirt to the point when it had to be confiscated by my mom due to being more holes than fabric. Thank you for the video!
I know this might be a bit late, but this is a damned fine tribute. Thanks for doing this, HCC!
I didn't have this figure but I remember when it came out. I didn't follow football but The Fridge was well known!
Wow, this is so inspiring and interesting thanks for doing this 👌
I wish Fridge would go to comic conventions. He'd be well treated and paid for both showing up and autographs.
I couldn't contribute to this because I had no contact with American football and I'm not sure if the figure was ever sold in Britain, but this was a fantastic review and the interactive section at the end was a great idea. You're a good man, HCC. I hope the Fridge sees it and digs it.
thanks HCC788 can't wait to do our comparison
Love the tribute at the end HCC! I'll always remember the Fridge not only because he's a Joe, but because that Pats/Bears SB was the first one I ever watched.
I remember watching The Fridge in a battle royal at WrestleMania 2.
I considered including that, but I was worried the video would be too long. The video wasn't really too long, so I could have included it. It was too late by the time I figured that out.
HoodedCobraCommander788 still a superb video!!! Loved it!!!
A beautiful tribute. Great work!
How come no one ever mentions "Big Brawler" in reviews mentioning figures based or inspired by real people? The figure.
Love your videos by the way. Especially when you mentioned a while back counting the ammo and carry capacity of your joes. I did the same thing growing up
Who was he based on?
The Fridge is one out of a thousand Heroes
Great review. Great tribute. He was my first mail away action figure.
Thank you, Donald. What was it about the Fridge that made you decide to get it?
Two reasons, One being I missed out on Sgt. Slaughter and Two I remember the super bowl he played in.
I'm aware I should let you feel free to have your opinion, but I was never a fan of *any* of the mail away figures (I'm aware they were sold bagged), hence I was never a fan of *this* character (I do like Sergeant Slaughter, who has a black moustache, but I only like the 1986 Triple T Tank 'Tag Team Terminator' driver) [if I could control how G.I. Joe went, I'd include Colonel Mustafa and General Adnan - I'd have them too as 1986 vehicle drivers, and I'd have them as Joes; of course, Colonel Mustafa would have his black handlebar moustache, and General Adnan would have a black moustache].
I'd even have Colonel Mustafa and General Adnan (as well as said version of Sergeant Slaughter) lead the Renegades (where the team would be renamed 'Colonel Mustafa, Sergeant Slaughter and General Adnan's Renegades'). Of course, similar to Robert Remus voicing Sergeant Slaughter, I'd have Colonel Mustafa voiced by *his* real life self - Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, and General Adnan voiced by *his* real life self - Adnan Al-Kaissie.
All three members being Joes could possibly be to emphasise that, although they portrayed Iraqi sympathisers in the WWF (now WWE), and were heels, they're nice men in real life, who have families, who they love - them being 'Iraqi sympathisers' was merely a *gimmick*.
He sits on my dresser to this day !
Getting the Fridge figure in the mail was pretty awesome, and just like Sarge he was armed to the teeth soon as I dug out out accessories. My friends asked me to bring him over that weekend. It was fun to have an actual living person appear as a Joe. Hasbro chose a good guy.
Great video!👍
Great work, as always.
Cool review and love the knowledge ... sorry couldn't give my though on perry the fridge cause been busy at work
That's alright, Zed. Thanks for watching! I appreciate it!
Still have my figure in mint condition!!!! Yo Joe!!!🍺🍺😎🎸
Awesome tribute and review
great review and tribute. i remember the touchdown in the superbowl
I myself also had the fridge. Good figure!
A friend that was on the football team, either middle or high school at the time, he also became a "Fridge" himself.
Goddess speed, Fridge.
8:40 Swivel Arm Battle Grip!! That's how GI Joe advertised their articulation after the first wave which did not have swivel arms.
Don't forget Roddy Piper for Destro's iron grenadiers for the 25th anniversary of G.i. joe and his birthplace were changed from Canada to Scotland for the filecard
The man is a Legend.
Awesome review
Grand slam and Recondo are from the same town essentially. Wheaton WI is on the outskirts of town and same school district. Danielle LeClaire was a real person from there albeit a kid/young adult at the time of the figure. I was friends with Daniels cousin at the time and the friend told me that their uncle worked for Hasbro and named the character after him. I cannot confirm this at all, but would explain how two characters came from the same place in small town WI.
HCC788 you're doing Gods work brother
In the 1980s G.I. Joe linethere was a baseball themed G.I. Joe figure if I are member correctly he wears a Chicago Cubs uniform was based on a baseball player. I literally have the figure I have to dig it out to see which team uniform. He was wearing can't remember the name of the figure. He wears a pair of glasses with a baseball cap believe it's a Cubs. One of his accessories was a baseball bat. I forget what the other one was mine is missing the legs. If I were member correctly.
absolute class review
Awesome tribute!
Cool review nice broadening of the spectrum of topics covered. What stands out about "The Fridge" for me was that he came rather promptly to me after ordering him as a mail away figure. The previous mail-away Sgt. Slaughter was not the case and took over a year to show up so they had a better idea of response with The Fridge's production numbers as a figure. Sadly the bitter taste of the Sgt. Slaughter episode kind of turned us off from doing mail away figures at the time and I didnt even do the Star Brigade or Super Trooper at the time. I have since picked up Super Trooper on the aftermarket and is one of my all time face Joes. I piked up an army of Steel Brigade on later production versions. Thanks for this important review and good luck to The Fridge!
wow! you know so much commander, it s impressive.
I loved this review, quite sad and touching story about the fridge.
I was lucky enough to get him, had great fights with big boa and slaughter.
it was awesome to see all the figs together that were derived on real persons, fantastic work!
if this is the last convention, I hope hasbro re figures their business model.
but with toys r us bankruptcy, it will not be easy.
I'll get a Fridge figure eventually.
Perry stole the super bowel play that was meant to finish Peyton's ( #34 Walter Peyton ) career. Then he was immortalized as a figure. I had it and that was cool but, Walter deserved the win and character could a been awesome.
Nice work my friend
Thank you! It's always great to hear from you!
HoodedCobraCommander788 I really liked that tribute at the end man that was cool
Love these videos but the sound is slightly off by a second or two I love how you give fridge the honor he deserves well done commander
Try it again. The sound was fine when I checked it.
Seeing as how at one point the designers were literally walking around the building with a Polaroid taking photos of anyone they could get to agree to being the face of a GI Joe AND they told everyone they knew to give them the names and pics of any "real Joes" they knew who they wanted to honor, I personally only count them as "based on real people" if they *actually* are supposed to be that specific person in the GIJ Universe, like Fridge.
So "Tunnel Rat" ain't the GIJU "Larry Hama", he just looks like the man
I always wanted to see him in the cartoon.
I do wonder if they did make a third season of the original cartoon, would they have The Fridge show up for an episode?
Yep, I sent in for him too. I'm not a football fan but my brother was/is. I definitely knew about him because his popularity was inescapable! What he's going through sounds similar to what Kamala is dealing with. I hate seeing this happen to someone that was a phenomenon!
HCC788 you forgot to mention he was at WWF WrestleMania 2 Battle Royal and in 2006 was inducted in the WWE Hall Of Fame
Good job.. I mean, great Job!! I really wanted to join this video, but sadly, his toy never got to my country. I searched my comic book ( which is a little over a handful) But I don't have any issues about him.
Hoodie Coco! He look like Road Block Hes a gourmet I remember Road Pig 🐖 he was a dread knock
Wow- I never cared much for this figure, but after learning his history, I’m actually inspired to seek him out once again. Thanks for the perspective!
it would be an honor to have Fridge there
Great review, I didn't know you were a Pats fan!
Thank you! I've been a Pats fan for about 14 years now.
HoodedCobraCommander788 hope they do as well this year as they did last year.
God I wanted his action figure.
Sgt. Slaughter was a real life marine.
Broken thumbs were always a problem for me with my joes.
He is also a WWE Hall of Famer
"sneal" peek is the evil twin of sneak peek created by serpentor to infiltrate the joes! ;-)
honestly, tho at the time i hated that football hammer/chain weapon of his...he was top tier all the way. i wish they gave him a helmet, backpack and like some munition weapons...i would have had no problems if they gave him say grid iron's payload and accessories and just re-colored it to tailor the figure.
His joining G.I. Joe helped me forgive him for helping to "destroy" The Patriots in Super Bowl 20 (the first one I ever watched because the Pats were in it!). Speaking of which love the jersey, but wouldn't #14 (Steve Grogan) be more appropriate?
It was a slaughter of the Pats, no question. I don't have a Grogan jersey. I don't actively collect jerseys, so you'll have to settle for #12.
Zarana
Hcc788 my fridge has a ball joint head is that ok pls respond but thx for actually reading my comments I only know 2 who does u and G.I. Joe berg can you check out my channel I have a joe stop motion and say something on ur channel I will say something like if you like go joes go cheacj out hcc788
If you like joes I mean
The last one is a auto correct so I fixed it
Didn't it say on RedDog's file card that he was a barefoot place kicker?
william "the perry" fridge
I never understood why GI Joe with the bridge in there. I mean come on Hasbro your base out of Rhode Island, he beat the brakes off of us. You should have won that 86 super bowl. If they cover the spread I would have gotten more GI Joe's,
Boo to the Evil Empire Jersey, great review though.
After Slaughter and Perry, it was a bit of a stretch.
Hardball??? Is that not another Joe with Ballsports history?
Or is that an other sport in America? I'm from europe and here is football god! Forgive my ignorance!
