Greenhouse from Recycled Windows, Doors & Shipping Pallets

  • Our greenhouse was constructed during the lockdowns of 2020. Our inspiration came from the three old doors, which were found discarded on side of the road. Our vision started to unfold and we were able to find other recycled windows for free or for minimal purchase. All of the windows needed new glazing, so I had to learn how. I found easy tutorial videos on UA-cam and used Dap Window Gazing, which was easy to use, especially once I had a few completed. I think they turned out great. We layed out each of the four walls like a puzzle, fitting in the different windows wherever they seemed to fit. In 2022, we added a small pergola to the front of the greenhouse; a wisteria was planted to grow up and along the top.
    We opted to leave the floor of the greenhouse untended with the exception of some mulch that was added.
    Our greenhouse is somewhat shaded by trees from our neighbors yard, but we did not have another good location for it. As such, I've discovered that there are a lot of plants that don't do well, but there are many that thrive. It's been some trial and error over the last few years. Many of the annual plants I've grown from seed have dropped seeds that have germinated on the dirt floor in subsequent years.
    Up until 2024, we were at a loss for how to enclose the roof peaks, so they remained open. As a result, we have not been able to keep the birds out. They LOVE the greenhouse and there are several nests in the rafters; they come and go frequently! I've had to capture them on occasion when I'm inside as they get confused on how to get out. We are currently working on closing up the roof peaks; I will include updated videos on how it turns out.
    This project was super fun and gave us purpose during the chaos of 2020. I have a passion for gardening and find it so relaxing to spend time tending and caring for my plants. I hope you find some inspiration here! Feel free to message me with any questions.

    We just built (well we are still building) our Greenhouse. Mostly made from old Windows and doors also. I do like how you repaired all of the glazing on the windows first. We didn't do it before, but are trying to clean them all up now. Still trying to figure out where/how to make auto-opening vents at the top.

      and I wish I would have painted my rafters before putting on the plastic roofing (like you guys did). If you watch any of our videos, you can see the wood under the plastic panels is still unpainted.

      We still have not enclosed the peak on ours as we have been able to come up with a good solution.

    Really cute! But the top corners are wide open to the elements?

      Yes currently they’re open so I have lots of birds that have made it home. We are currently working on enclosing them. I’ll post an update once we have it completed!

    We're looking on something very similar right now! Looking at roughly 6x8ft. Anything that you wish you would've done differently? Looks like it turned out great!

      Hi Dave! This was a super fun project and I hope you have fun too. Some things I would change: use pressure treated wood for your frame. We used it for our base but everything else was just regular wood, but there are some exposed areas that are not well protected against the elements. We have not had any issues yet, but this preventative option may provide a longer-lasting structure. I wish I had been a little more selective with the windows we used as some of them are double-paned with condensation inside, making them foggy in appearance. We have thought about putting in a sub-floor as currently it's just dirt, but that is more personal preference. We would also build the roof a little differently, using one long support board to cross over the support beams (we cut each respective board to place in-between the support beams and it was a lot of extra work).

      One final thought - if you can go bigger, go bigger! Ours is 10 x 12 and it feels crowded at times.

      @@chandacregg Thanks for the response! All good things to keep in mind as we proceed. I'm about 13 old single paned windows in for my collection and hope to start laying out a frame and layout this month and next here in zone 7b.

      @@chandacregg That's an on-going joke I've seen in reddit's r/greenhouses community. They're never quite big enough! Unfortunately that's about the biggest we can in our yard as all of the other space is utilized by garden beds and pergolas. Mostly just need something to start seeds for the year.

    What did you use to finish the peak, where the fiberglass meets?

    • @chandacregg
      @chandacregg  5 місяців тому

      Hi! We are actually workin on finishing the peaks this spring. I found some rectangular windows that will span the center and we plan to use the same pallet siding to fill in the gaps around the windows. I will update my channel with a new video once we have this complete. Thanks for your comments!

    The putty you used for the glazing wanted to know was that one bucket enough for all those windows that you redid how.? About how many windows did you get out of that little bucket?

    • @chandacregg
      @chandacregg  Рік тому

      I used two containers to complete the job. Most of the windows needed some repair.

    Your demo for inserting glass pane showed how to apply putty, did you also insert (but did not show) window pane glazing points before adding putty? Curious to know. Thanks

      Only if they were there prior to deglazing. Some windows had them but most did not.

    Are you heating this greenhouse during the winter so you can use it beyond fall? We are in the process of building two of these, both 10x12.

    • @chandacregg
      @chandacregg  Рік тому

      We are not heating it. We still have not decided how to enclose the peaks so they are open to the elements at this point. I do store all my dormant perennials overwinter and they do just fine but we’re not able to grow during the winter months.

      @chandacregg thanks for the response, I am in Michigan (Northern lower) as well, and winter will be the season we use ours the most. Your design is really attractive with this greenhouse. 👍

      We actually built the frame ourselves. If I had to do it again, I'd probably make a few changes!
