- I am going to tell you right now that this meal is pure comfort food for me - this is what the Thai part of my heart grew up eating - I am honored to share this entire meal with you today :)
Welcome to some of Thailand's most UNDER-RATED and TRAVEL-WORTHY flavor - 'Goong Jom' is the delicious sour-salty fermented shrimp paste most famous from Prakon Chai, Buriram. This shrimp paste is so highly desired that anyone traveling through Buriram literally might not be welcomed home if their coming back empty-handed.
When you're here, this is the ONE dish you have to try, and as its the Holiday season Im gonna go ahead and say this is the Esaan STOCKING STUFFER of the year :). There wouldn't be anything I would rather have if I knew that YOU were visiting this part of Thailand, and I am so happy we had the chance to have a meal like this for our own little holiday celebrations...
Big Bonus too, as we doubled up with Jae Ann's amazing home-made 'Jaew Bong,' bringing things to another level of flavor. The two fiery flavors of ferment-tated delight are what make this meal the sustaining food of the Thai countryside.
Please leave a comment if you know the simple joys of Thailand's Nam Prik chili dips with fresh vegetables, and something like a fish soup with white rice to seal the meal's perfection. I could eat this exact meal pretty much every day (and I did! from about 2011-2014), and Jae Ann treated us right!

One of the things I love about these places is that they always serve fresh vegetables and greens with the food.. Those beans and eggplant just take the whole experience to a whole new level.. Everytime I hear Joel take a bite, the sound of that fresh crisp crunch bite gets me so hungry I almost start biting on my furniture.. Awesome video.. thanks, Joel :).

LOL "cooking on camera" - she could take over the mic from you Joel ! Old timers like me gotta watch their salt ... good thing you have some veggies to balance it. Those tiny Thai eggplants look super yummy ... I remember once when I had a "city" garden in Pennsylvania, when the regular eggplants arrived, you couldn't give them away LOL.

Hi Joel, it's remember me a fishing community at Ban Bang Phat where they produce fish sauce and dry shrimps. Near Koh Pany, it's also a floating restaurant. Fish sauce is essential in a lot of countries, anyway, it was used first by Romans (fermented ansjovis paste).

God Bless you Joel and Li . We are thrilled you both share an enthusiastic review and the ingredients. We are trying our best to be cooking Thai food, not so easy living in Montana. Finding a great deal of these ingredients impossible but when we make a 90 mile trip one way we should be able to pick up a few more. I am finding recipes that works with what I can get at our local store only 20 miles away. Time to go cook. Your show is great inspiration and educational. We'll be watching continuously!

Oh wow!!! The food looks delicious as always!!! Yes I'd definitely live everyday eating just nam prik chili dip with fresh crunchy veggies, steaming hot rice and soup. I just had Thai food today for lunch. It was som tum, pork won ton soup, and thai red curry 🌶️. Pee ann is such a delight 🌻. She was so surprised when you knew what her fermented fish paste was!👍 Glad you made a new friend and found another delicious destination🌎. One of the best foods are the ones home cooked, I mean not gourmet but flavorful. The coconut milk with banana is similar with the one in our country. Here we called it Kolak Pisang which means banana kolak. Kolak is the name of the dish. If there are no banana, people may use cassava, pumpkin, or any similar textured fruit as substitute. Or sometimes mixed altogether. It is a common dish during Ramadan as people choose it as appetizer or dessert after fasting.

I have to watch your videos while eating a meal now. Thankfully I am having my breakfast today during this video and was having lunch during the last video with the chicken. Although, if someone had put that chicken in front of me, I would have eaten it all, even after a filling lunch.
