My second-EVER airbrush job, how does it look?

  • I've broken out the airbrush again for another practice and overall I think I did well-how do YOU think I did?
The kit's MPC's 1975 Corvette, which I won at my first-ever model car show last year. Paint is Tammy's X-13 Metallic Blue, and it's thinned using Mr. Color 400 Leveling Thinner. I'm getting the hang of my Grex Genesis airbrush and compressor, so hopefully some of my excitement and satisfaction over how it turned out for me inspires you to give it a try as well!
Want to swap shop cards or share pics of your builds for everyone to see? Here's my email address-send me your address and I'll send you mine as well as my cards, and I'll post your build pics so everyone can see. Thanks!

Very nice work David. The Vette looks great. Listen to Terry. He will never lead you astray. You've stepped into a larger world.

One more tip, try to get the compressor which also has the reserve tank so the compressor isn’t running as much. Therefore will make the compressor last a little longer and makes long paint sessions easier.

Looks like your off to a great start! You are absolutely correct as far as the airbrush, invest in a really good one and you'll never be sorry. I personally use a large compressor in my shop, it becomes multi-purpose not only for my airbrush work but for tires, air tools, etc; I have been airbrushing for over 50 years! (I got my first one when I was 10!) Best of luck with your build! Love the Vette!

Came out great, I'll never understand the hesitation or fear of airbrushing, you've already stepped up your game. Have fun with it, enjoy it and in no time your skill and artistry with it will improve rapidly.

Especially nowadays when there is SO, SO many videos on UA-cam that will show you EXACTLY what you need to do. You can find a tutorial for damn near anything on UA-cam lol.

Just got my airbrush and booth, gonna set it up this wknd and jump into it, wish me luck, first timer, old rattlecan user here and just got back into models after a 35 yr hiatus. Building the 85 Olds FE3-X in Black. very excited to start airbrushing instead of rattle cans, never was impressed with the cans. Your Vette looks awesome, GOOD JOB!!!

Well my friend welcome to the air brush world. Remember one thing as you go up in coats the slower you can move across your subject. You will get better coverage and a lot more gloss will come. Nice job my friend. 😀👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Nice work. That old thinning the paint to the neck of the bottle thing works for brush painting, but for air brushing, typically toy want to start about 50/50 and add paint or thinner as needed.
Not a fan of vallejo air brushes personally. Not for bodies. It's ok for interior stuff.
My first few air brushings weren't great . There's definitely a learning curve. But once you get the hang of it, you love it.
You are right. It's not cheap setting up, but the amount of money saved in just all the overspray from rattle cans will pay for it in the end.

Very nice job. I have tried the airbrush thing but never could get the hang of it. I do have fairly good success with Tamiya rattle cans, trick is to apply in thin coats until the desired effect.

Very nice job, the finish looks great. I've just started using the Levelling thinner also and it really helps set the paint down, although I find it has a very strong smell.

That turned out great Dave! Just learning myself to. Ive always been a rattle can but now am converted 😮 i started using a .35 tip and it was just to darn small for the whole body. Stepped up to a .5 and Bam! So much easier and better results. I love how fast it dries to. Well done. I made a similar mistake on my 1st one. I was told to lightly sand those spots reshoot the bad spots and feather it in. For paint splatters I've been using a lint free towel and dabing the splatter. I've gotten much better now but it worked really well.

Rough up the paint job on the first model, topcoat it with a matt varnish and build it up as a rat rod.
