Hi Jeff I'm 60 years old live alone an I'm trying my hardest to fix everything for myself I had this wisseling sound in my toilet I saw your videos I I fix it except when I turn in the valve I turn the whole thing how do I know I didn't break the pipe holding the wisseling valve
Finally someone that actually shows the noise the toilet makes rather than talk about it then fix it. Getting ready to fix mine and had to watch 5 videos to hear one that made the exact sound that mine made. 😂
Although I didn’t replace the pump, this video did help me. I didn’t realize there was a removable, rubber seal on the inside. I have hard water in my home and suspected there may be buildup of minerals, which I was right. I used soap and an old toothbrush to clean off the mineral deposits, put it back together, and the noise was gone. I know a new unit is only $15, but money saved is money saved. I certainly recommend checking the seal since it only takes a few minutes.
I just did this exact repair no more than 10 mins after upload. the toilet has been having issues for the past 3 years and since it is a toilet no one uses it was easier to turn off the water until today. It was a great walkthrough tutorial. Thanks for the confidence boost.
I watched you video where you recommended replacing the entire fill valve instead of just the seal. I went cheap and just bought the $3 seal. After installing the seal, the whistling stopped, but the fill valve never closed. Another trip to the store to pick up the fill valve as you recommended finally got my commode working quietly.
Jeff…. Thank you so much for this easy to follow video. My toilet has been making this noise for over a year…. OVER A YEAR!! I assumed my hubby was never going to call the plumber so I took matters into my own hands. Thanks to your video.. my toilet is finally quiet. The only issue I had was that apparently a very strong man had tightened the plastic locknut God knows how many years ago, and I just couldn’t twist it off. I decided to try twisting the old fill valve inside the tank to see if it would loosen the locknut that way, and it did. Once it was loose I was able to twist the locknut off without a problem. This time it was twisted back on by my women hands so it should be easier to take off if needed next time. 🤣 Thanks again for saving me money by teaching me how to do it myself. A lot of pride comes with doing things yourself. Oh… and my husband is singing me praises!! 😂🤣
Thank you so much for this video! Last night my toilet was trying to convince me to get someone to sign it a record deal. I had to let it know it does not have a good singing voice and ran to UA-cam to figure out how to fix it. I followed your tutorial and now my toilet is quiet like it should be! Thank you for taking the "unknown" away and allowing me to fix something myself!
Great job buddy. It solved the whining noise I was hearing, and I also found out after doing the 3" measurement between the overflow tube and the top of the fluid master that the old the height was way too short. I fixed all that and it runs better than it ever has. Thank you.
We've had the squealing issue with our toilet for over a year now. We eventually stopped using the bathroom because we thought there was a serious problem with the toilet. I was about to finally call a plumber when I decided to Google the issue to see if it was potentially a simple fix. Your video was the first one I came across. I immediately ordered the $15 replacement part on Amazon and got it in today. I am the WORST at home renovations, but with your help this took me only 10-15 minutes to fix!! Thank you so much for saving me probably over $100 on hiring someone to fix such an easy problem
Thank you!!! I don’t know anything about plumbing except that it’s expensive to call the plumber. By following your instructions, I just fixed my squealing toilet! I thank you, my children thank you, and my sanity thanks you!
Thanks for this video!! I got the job done with your help. I can't believe I considered calling a plumber for this. Easy enough to do it myself! You are awesome, and thanks for the links to order the part. And I went ahead and replaced the flapper while I was in there. WooHoo!
THANK YOU! This video was exactly what I was looking for. I clicked on your Home Depot link and found the exact item in store. It’s better that it’s a Universal item. My dad has a lot of experience changing the valve so he didn’t need to watch but the part was very easy for him to install. It worked swell! Hope you get the commission
Just fixed my toilet yesterday finally with the help of this video. Thank you! My replacement valve is a 400A and the old one was M31718. Both by Fluidmaster. The 400A has a plastic pipe and the other one had a metal pipe. The maximum height of the 400A valve was at the three inch mark above the overflow pipe. Increasing the height of the main valve increases the water going into the tank. From there, the secondary valve fine tunes the water level up or down. If you use the secondary valve, the best way to test it is to flush the toilet next. Just adding a little water through the secondary valve does not necessarily reflect exactly where the level will be on subsequent flushes.
Watched your video 8 times while doing the repair, still like your video due to what my other comment stated. Took me 35 minutes to repair the toilet, just going back and making sure everything was tightened. Only difference is that i had to use a pair of pliers on the gasket at the bottom and i did use my Shop Vac, but everything else went perfectly. 😁 Thank you for this video and i am now a committed subscriber. 😎👍🏾
I should have listened to your advice the first time I watched this video, sure enough the $2 gasket didn’t fix it. Ordered the entire thing from Amazon and was an easy fix. Thank you, just subscribed!
Amazing instructions. I screw up every DIY project I've ever tried. But I watched this video twice, walked into HD and got the part, and the whole repair worked like a charm. Thanks!
i saw someone do this much easier, they didn't undo the part underneath the toilet, they just reached inside the toilet and pulled up the grey thing at the bottom, then the valve comes out easily, then you put the new one in and then push the grey thing back down to the bottom to lock it in place, you dont need to undo the bottom from under the toilet
Thank you! We’ve been dealing with this problem for over a year. I even tried giving the valve a little bit of oil in hopes for that horrible noise to go away with no avail, nice and easy tutorial!
Hi Jeff! I watched your videos about titan, recommended to me. I was having this issue and google squeaky toilet fix and your face pops up, I'm like heck yeah. I followed the video and the fix was cheap, easy, and exactly how you described. thanks Jeff!
Not only did this help me but I now know the basics of a toilet! This will be so helpful for me if my husband isn’t around or (do what wives do) ask him to do it then if he doesn’t do it in the next minute I’ll do it. Lol! Great video!
Thank you so much for the tutorial. I am going to buy a valve today at Home Depot and install mine all by myself. I will let you know how everything went.
Thanks for a great informative video! Was putting this off because i figure like everything else in my house, it will turn into a huge job, replacing the toilet and the floor and who k ows what because its never as easy as it should be. But, this seems super straight forward. My wife is gonna be thrilled when she comes home and the toilet is no longer screaming at us!!😅😅
Wow worked like a charm no more screaming toilet! The locknut was super tight but I added some WD40 and wrench and quickly loosened. Super easy thanks to your video.
Thank you for this video!! Had been having this happen to my toilet for weeks and didn’t do anything about it until i finally couldn’t take it. Didn’t realize it was such an easy fix, thank you!
Thanks so much! 🙏 I was about to change apartments as the manager had no idea and thought it was water pressure - but it wasn't. The under nut was leaking constantly, but as I live in Bangkok, I never noticed the water as you can put water all over the bathroom floor. It was an unbelievable noise!! 😫
Very helpful video! I made a complete mess anyway but I went over to my mom and dad's and saved them a hefty plumber bill using this exact model. The only issue is it's a *tad* noisy but hopefully with more flushes it will straighten itself out. Thanks for these instructions.
Good advice. Once you are working on it and have to spend the gas money on a trip to Home Depot get new parts anyway. They look nice and you will be on the better side of chances. If I do work on gasket seats I always check that no debris is on the surface where the gasket is going to sit. Even minute amounts or scale, dirt or other foreign objects will cause leaks.
I didn't even know where the noise was coming from. Thought the noise was coming from the wall. Popped it off like you showed. Found a broken piece of plastic in there. Removed it and put it back together. The sound was gone. Would wake me up in the middle of the night.
same problem a month ago. Just needed a new rubber valve disc inside, cost less than $1 and took two minutes take apart the bayonet joint halfway down the valve and slip an new rubber into the valve.
The float only has so much upward push possible. I found I had 90 psi coming into my house. I had a plumber install a pressure regulator and several problems disappeared. Showers that made you think you were being sandblasted, water hammer arrestors that didn’t work, and, eventually, a water leak from my washing machine. Lower pressure means toilet floats have a better chance of sealing off the incoming pressure.
If you have issues with stuck / frozen locknut, I applied WD40 to it and tried to use a wrench but it seemingly didn't work. Most plumbers on UA-cam said you need to saw off the old end of the valve / locknut which I was prepared to do (because you get a replacement locknut with the new valve), but then I went back to try one more time and it worked! WD40 must have started working...
Hi there. Thanks for this video. It's really helpful. I was following your steps. But I could not remove the locknut by hand. Mine is a hexagon shaped lock nut. How am I supposed to remove that? Thanks.
The "secondary valve" as you described it fills the bowl, not the tank. Adjust that so the bowl is full just as the tank is full when the valve shuts off. Any extra water going into the bowl will be truly wasted. It's a touchy little control, and you can turn it down too far and the bowl won't fill up all the way when the tank is full, but a little trial & error will have the bowl at the correct level. Check out the Fluidmaster video, too.
Thanks for the tip Jeff! I need to do the same thing to my toilet on the second floor of my house. Fortunately I have a cordless wet/dry vac, so it shouldn’t be too messy.
Great video! I just replaced my toilet fill valve and even the flapper using your instructions -- i bought the Fluidmaster Performax from Home Depot. Thank you! Just a quick question -- everything works well just curious if it's normal to take over 1:30 minutes to fill up the actual tank? seems a tad longer than before install. anything I can do? or just leave it alone? the Kohler toilet is about 30 years old fyi (so not a new one). thanks.
if the top of the fill valve is set too low, what issues may come about? I've replaced my fill valve assembly for the second time recently after hearing the wheezing/farting sound and sound went away for the past couple of weeks but I'm staring to hear it again as well as hearing intermittent water noise which makes the water filling sound for a brief moment. I wonder if that fill valve level is the culprit or if maybe the flapper portion which I havent replaced yet.
Awesome video ! Having said that i could not open the second screw under the flush, what size and sort of tool should i get from homedepot ? Apparently as you mentioned during the video, the builder tightened it very hard in my case and i was unable to open it with hand.
What do I do if there isn't 3" of space between the top of my overflow pipe and the top of the tank? Do I need to trim the pipe shorter to get the 3" difference between the pipe and the fill valve? Right now there's space for a 1.5" difference, max
I just put Vaseline around the float tube, works for now and stopped the squealing, o-ring is probably old and dried out but I will pickup up a new one next time I go to the hardware store.
I'm just going to keep extra fill valves on hand don't even want to mess with the gaskets because I pulled out the old gasket and couldn't find anything wrong with it it had looked in perfect condition
@@jeffostroff I had valve rubber with a tear in it. So the water was never shut off completely. But that tear could only be seen when the rubber was deformed. In the normal shape it was not detectable.
Mine has been a bit noisy filling after flush for a while but about a week ago I started getting some loud vibrating down at the supply valve, then that stops and I hear screaming in the fill valve. I’ve just tried partially closing the supply valve and that stopped the noise while filling more slowly. Looks like I should next try to replace the fill valve?
Every time a home improvement channel has a fill valve video, I have to tell you guys the story about this lady. This lady wanted me to fix her toilet because it squealed. Sure enough, the toilets all squeaked right when it finished filling up. So I replaced the rubber fill valve gaskets and called it a day. She calls me back the next day saying the toilets still squeals at night. I go back and replace the flush valves thinking there’s a small leak that forces the toilets to refill at night and squeak. She calls me again a few days later, so I totally strip the toilets down to porcelain and rebuild them with all new parts. A few days later, I get a call again. I tell her I can’t fix it for her and give her her money back. A few weeks later, I see her son at a BBQ party. He tells me his mom’s tinnitus is getting worse these days.
One of mine does a similar noise randomly but stops if I go flush it. It scares my kids & their friends. They hate that bathroom & refuse to go in there. It's like a squealing/howling noise & I will admit that it's creepy! Is this the same fix or something different?
I just replaced the fill valve and now I'm having issues with squeaking/squealing. Is there something I did wrong with the install that could cause the squealing? I don't want to replace the fill valve again if I don't need to
Julie, Make sure your water valve is turned all the way back on that it's getting full pressure, make sure there is nothing inside the valve that might have gotten in there and could be blocking the water flow inside there. If you know how to take the cap off and examine the gasket at the top that's usually where the squealing comes from. It could also be you got a bum unit and you might need to get another one
Okay so our toilet is a closed in one (inside the tank it’s all in one black container. There’s about an inch or less of water (it’s normal) but I have no idea where or how to change what you’re talking about in a closed in one. Any tips?
You don't use PVC piping in the walls they are not rated for the water pressure. Perhaps you were thinking of CPVC? And if you are I would definitely avoid that at all costs because that only lasts about 10 to 20 years before the pipe start cracking and many people in mid Florida right now are spending tens of thousands of dollars repiping their houses because of it. Pex is the way to go
@@jeffostroff yeah I meant to say CPVC all Im thinking is replacing the old pipe with pex piping since it's going under the trailer not behind walls or under ground. I live in Alabama
The problem made me search. The squeal made me stop. And the dulcet and concise directions made me stay. I waxed poetic over a plumbing video. That alone should make you watch. I'll be heading out later today to get this kit.
When I run into a toilet issue involving the tank, I traditionally replace both assemblies (unless one or the other is newer) because I don't want that phone call.
Yes that's always a good time to replace the flapper as well because at almost every time I open up somebody's toilet tank I can see that the flap looks like it's 50 years old and faded and it's probably ready
Hey from UK wanted to ask. I keep hearing ship/horn sound then filling noises and sudden shut off noise from what seems upstairs flat into my toliet room and into my bedroom this sound happens every 5mins-15mins non-stop driving me insane and leaving me sleepless. Sound itself is not coming from my high level ballcock toliet. it sounds like rooooaawwwww horn then filling and sudden stop. Like sound is above my head from flat above. But to add to mistery I filmed the sound from water pipe leading into my high level tank. So is it my toliet or theres? I called my landlord repairline and they sent plumber upstairs to replace part inside their toliet which looks like one from your video. But even as he was repairing I was hearing same noise. So could it be my high level ballock toliet that is faulty? He reccomended my high level toliet be rippped out and new one put in but he thinks theres asbestos in the old black toliet from 1998 so sample is went to lab to confirm and new high level will be fitted. If you can help with any insight thank you
I decided to change the seat. That was wrong. The valve has a cold weld line in the plastic. Mine might have been one of the first shots in the injection molding process. I should have gotten the fill kit. I could have figured this out from the start if I would have taken the valve apart first.

Yes, glad to help out
I agree. Great video. I bought the recommended product then i removed the old part and installed the new part. It worked well with no issues.
I absolutely agree with this video. I only had a problem with removing with the former valve being tightened to much. Thank you so much.
Glad it helped
Very useful video got it done in 10 minutes! Thanks!
Glad it helped!
I didn't even know where the noise was coming from. Thought the noise was coming from the wall. Popped it off like you showed. Found a broken piece of plastic in there. Removed it and put it back together. The sound was gone. Would wake me up in the middle of the night.
Thank you so much, easy to understand video. Been dealing with this for so long now. You are a life saver
same problem a month ago.

Those fluid master valves are the best solution. We use their products and they are dependable and inexpensive.
Yes they work every time for me
Thank you for the instruction about changing the parts on the inside of the tank. Great video.. 😄❤️👍
You’re welcome 😊
Hi there. Thanks for this video. It's really helpful. I was following your steps. But I could not remove the locknut by hand. Mine is a hexagon shaped lock nut. How am I supposed to remove that? Thanks.
Successful install other than ine issue, even after max adjustment, the water is still an inch under the overflow pipe. Is that a cause for concern?
Just wondering why in the corner at 2:11 I see the bottom of the wall looks like it's peeling or bending away from the wall. Is there a leak there?
Thank you so much for your help I did exactly like you said and I did it myself 57 year old woman… Save some money also
Awesome Rachel and congratulations on getting that done yourself

if the top of the fill valve is set too low, what issues may come about?
Right now there's space for a 1.5" difference, max
thank you so much my noisy problem was resolve. From canada 🤗
Hell yeah! Thank you very much!
Awesome 👌 tysm I followed everything you said and now its fixed!
Glad I could help
Great video! I had the same problem and this fix took care of it.
Way to go tom glad it helped
What should i do if my old supply valve didn't make any noise but I just got a new one and installed it and now it's making that humming noise?
The new valve should not be making any noise, I assume you are talking about squealing?
@@jeffostroff yes it's squealing a few minutes after filling. Just bought another one from Amazon maybe i got a faulty one
Worked for me, thanks! (Happy to use the Home Depot link too.)
You're welcome Alan!
I’ve had good luck with the valves that are self contained, the ones where you cannot see the float go up and down.
Yeah I might try to experiment with one of those on a future repair
I just put Vaseline around the float tube, works for now and stopped the squealing, o-ring is probably old and dried out but I will pickup up a new one next time I go to the hardware store.
I have good luck replacing the little gasket. But I keep gaskets and a fill valve on hand.
Jeff what happens if the Performex I already have in the toilet now is whistling?
Thanks for the tips
Good thing I live near a Home Depot, thanks!
Oh that's a great story I gotta remember that in case we run into that I'll ask people if they have a problem with ringing in their ears
Have you tried the toilet out with her present and letting her explain what sound it makes?
Great, simple vid. So well done. Appreciate you making this
Glad you enjoyed it!
Would a Fluidmaster 400A replacement fill valve be ok too?
Thank you for this video! Just fixed my toilet!!! 💪 🔧 🚽
Glad it helped!
Thank You! I knew it was coming from that thing in the corner!
But what's the point of running that water from the hose down the overflow pipe every time the tank is filling up?
I never knew why, maybe it is part of the siphon runoff
It fills the bowl to the proper level
Okay so our toilet is a closed in one (inside the tank it’s all in one black container. There’s about an inch or less of water (it’s normal) but I have no idea where or how to change what you’re talking about in a closed in one. Any tips?
could the height of the valve ever be the cause of the noise?
@jeffostroff I have a plumbing question, is pex piping better than PVC in a mobile home
Being a new subscriber, I'm going thru and enjoying your videos. Great channel. 😍👍
Welcome aboard!
The problem made me search.
The squeal made me stop.
And the dulcet and concise directions made me stay.
I waxed poetic over a plumbing video. That alone should make you watch. I'll be heading out later today to get this kit.
Heads up your affiliate link for Amazon didn’t work for me, may want to update. I’m on mobile. Also thank you! This was helpful.
Thanks I fixed it. Sometimes they change a link and don't tell us
I just replaced my old kit with the exact one that you used in this video. The brand new one is making this noise. Is it faulty?
Any idea how to fix this?
Awesome explanation!! Thanks!!
If you can help with any insight thank you
Great video!
Very good video. Btw, you sound like Ray Liotta in Goodfellas ..
I decided to change the seat. That was wrong. The valve has a cold weld line in the plastic. Mine might have been one of the first shots in the injection molding process. I should have gotten the fill kit. I could have figured this out from the start if I would have taken the valve apart first.
