I wonder if there are other Zep fans here whose eyes tear up when listening to this because they know this man deserves the respect he is getting at this gig. He plays with so much soul and is so poetic. Zep would not have been nearly as good without him. They had 3 "superstars", and on the sidelines, in the shadows, was this quiet genius holding it all together.
Agree %100. Led zeppelin where the greatest band on earth because they had the worlds best guitarist the worlds greatest ever drummer an incredible singer with a voice like no other, all backed up by an actual musical genius.
@@brettmidd2250 This is what makes me certain that Zep was greater even than the Beatles. Can any other band claim that they had THE BEST singer, guitarist, drummer, and bassist? No. I am not saying it is unanimous with Zep, but you can certainly make that claim.
I saw Led Zeppelin back in the '70's. I admit John Paul Jones is one of the greatest guitar players 🎉 however, when I went to see them, they all were so messed up they couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. 😢 I was so upset because I remember wanting to see them so bad. @@DH-xm3hc I saw Zeppelin 4 times in the 70's. Every show was a masterpiece. Close to 3 hours everytime and no warmup band. This was in Detroit by the way. Sorry you had a bad experience. Wish you could have seen the shows I saw.
Jimmy didn’t ’choose’ him. They were already working together on the session circuit in swinging 60s London, on some of the great pop/rock classics of the time. In fact, JPJ gave Jimmy loads of session work as he arranged many of the songs they worked on as well as booking the session musicians required.
They all where a very tight gang rolling among the other genius shuch as Jeff Beck or Clapton in very different ways related to music and this we all know.
I’m endlessly frustrated with Robert and Jimmy for excluding JPJ for the no quarter stuff in the 90’s. I get that Robert didn’t want to turn it into a zeppelin reunion but he would’ve fit so well in that line up. Kudos to JPJ for his comment at the rock and roll hall of fame. Even now, just listening to what JPJ is playing, he could’ve easily sat in on sessions for raising sand and raise the roof with RP and Alison Krauss - I believe that is where JPJ and RP would’ve finally found their strongest intersection.
Because he was at least half of that magic. Sure, Page and Plant had their thing going while Bonzo happily banged away, but John Paul Jones was definitely the musical heart of Led Zeppelin.
My claim is that all of us rock-n-rollers owe ALMOST everything to JS Bach, and EVERYTHING to John Paul Jones. From what I understand, his family was all highly proficient musicians and his mother was the church organist, which led to JPJ becoming church organist a bit younger than most. To be a true and proper organist, you need to understand what Bach was all about, the well-tempered clavier. Those complex arrangements made to sound like effortless fluidity are to me the hallmark of that baroque, but especially Bach’s music. I think JPJ took all of that knowledge straight into Led Zeppelin, and between Page’s professional gig writing jingles as a factory type musician, the two of them could convey a vibe or feeling like few others, ever. Their diversity is stunning to this day. I say we owe rock as we know it to this dude right here.
His father Joe was a pianist & arranger for big bands and later was in a variety act ( musical comedy)with JPJ's mother who was a singer/dancer.When JPJ was 6 he found a harmonium in his grandmother's cellar ,and Joe taught him to play and read, notate music. His maternal grandmother had played piano for the silent films. When JPJ was 14 he became a choir master at his local church having taken up playing the organ , his first love. From the pay from this he was able to purchase his first bass.Yes the music does run in his genes ,as his paternal grandfather was also a singer & comedian! JPJ has said that Bach would have loved an electric bass , had they been around then ! ...... JPJ is a great musician and influencer in the musical sense !!

Truly one of the most magnificent and talented individuals in Rock and Roll. His background in chamber and chorale music made him Rock & Roll’s secret weapon in Led Zeppelin.
No, he's not. It's apples and oranges. Page and Bonham were virtuosos on their instruments. JPJ was just very good on several different things, which gave the band a wider palette. It's a little ridiculous though to say that he' s better than them.
Omg that is absurdly absolutely incredible, when the 8 string bass came in i got shivers… most people who haven’t worked with loopers have no idea how difficult this was, and with free time,

Yes, a "rock star" and a musician are often mutually exclusive. The latter being the greatest of the two.
