This is a kick-ass version that surpasses my favorite, the original by Kansas City Joe and Memphis Minnie and even the Zeppelin remake. John played bass in the Shadows, but beginning in 1964, he began studio work for Decca and found himself arranging and conducting session work for various English artists and bands we all are familiar with. Took up piano at 6 taught by his father, who was an arranger for a big band, apparently this early mixture of music served him well when joining Led Zeppelin. I know everyone heaps praise on Jimmy Page and rightfully so, but Jimmy wouldn't have had the success or longevity (he was also an in demand session guitarist) as anyone who has ever played in a band, knows it takes every musician to make the band. John's contributions to Zeppelin are often overlooked. Great job here, John!

I've read at least 1 million youtube comments about "underrated" bands, singers, musicians, etc. But there simply is no human being more underrated than John Paul Jones.
He played: Bass guitar, guitar, recorder, koto, lap steel guitar, autoharp, ukulele, clavinet, sitar, keyboards, keytar, mandolin, cello, harp, chitarrone, lirone, viola da gamba and percussion
He sang vocals in the greatest rock band in history. He's a composer, and has been in 9 movies/vid's. He has been an active musician for almost 60 YEARS.

I'm a big fan of Zeppelin since I'm a teenager, so when I found out this song from their IV album was a remake, felt something strange: how could their best song in the album (with Stairway to Heaven and Black Dog at the same fucking release), perhaps best track from all albums, be kinda a cover... Older, I also found out that in the 9th Beethoven's Symphony, on it's most famous section "Ode an die Freund" is a kinda cover, also - the great Master has made the music over a Schiller's poem. So state that When the Levee breaks is the "Ode an die Freund" from Led Zeppelin is a compliment indeed.

I've turned on several younger people (I'm 67 in November) to their music. Last year I played LZII, which my grown son (40-something) had never really sat down and listened to. Epic, to say the least. Not many bands in my library are like this; Where you re-listen over the years and continue to hear new "things" in the songs. Undiscovered nuances, and the like. All of the minute details in the playing and engineering are why I let myself be so disappointed when I saw them the only time on stage in 1977 on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. I wasn't mature enough to understand the complexities of such a live performance as theirs and was not prepared in any way to appreciate their stage presence as much as I could have; As much as I should have. They were, however, the ultimate in cool for the day. Long live the music, and long live youthful dreams and visions. Hell, "Long Live Rock".

How about some love for the poor black lady in New Orleans who wrote it?
Almost all of Led Zeppellins work is American music written by poor black Southerners that they got very wealthy appropriating and exploiting. It’s fantastic music - but people need to understand where it comes from and why it was written. This is a blues song.

    Thank you, Playing For Change!
On the Led Zeppelin IV album, an extra name is added: Memphis Minnie, a famous Mississippi Delta Blues guitarist & singer. She composed over 200 songs, including "When The Levee Breaks" in 1929.
The Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927 sent water 80 miles inland, devastating the poor rural farm towns. African-Americans became the focus for labor to repair & build new levees, and disaster relief food was rationed in a way that daily food was only given after a day of labor.
After things settled, many Black families migrated north to Chicago & Detroit.
Memphis Minnie was a blues icon who made an undeniable mark on American music and influenced musicians like Bonnie Raitt and Led Zeppelin. Born in 1897 as Lizzie Douglas, she was a pioneer of electric guitars and prolific composer who wrote nearly 200 songs in her career.

I didn't put all the details. The control of food was so that poor people could not travel away. Worse, many of the poor Blacks had been sharecropping, under Debt Peonage system. A virtual prisoner camp was made, to keep them in the Delta farmland, to pay off enormous debts. This was slavery, all over again.
Herbert Hoover was federal Secretary of Commerce who came out to oversee the massive relief operation. Media coverage made him a hero, so Hoover ran for President and won!
When flood was over, many of the Blacks migrated north to a new life in Chicago, or Gary, Indiana, or Detroit & Dearborn, Michigan, or Cleveland, Ohio.

      I don’t remember a harmonica, just a guitar & voice from the late 20s.

Led Zepp didn't use a Harmonica, it was some Page's guitar with some particular gear...He used it again on Coverdale Page album...

Really great to hear the Norwegian Sami singer in this bluesy Led Zeppelin song. I appreciate the global participation in these performances. The Maori dancers, drummer, and singer added a Pacific Island contribution to this performance. 3 years ago I took a BLUES Tour through Mississippi and other Southern states with ACE Touring Agency based in England. One of the blues performer in Mississippi told us that this kind of music is not popular anymore. That is okay. Every generation has their identity. I cannot force my musical tastes on others. As long as I can enjoy popular music from the 1960s to 1970s that is all I can ask. The way Mr. Perkin put a beat down on his drums I can tell some young people still enjoy this type of music. Peace, Love, and Rock & Roll. Plus hand Victory Sign.
