He currently lives in Carney, a little village in Co. Tipperary, five minutes away from Nenagh where he drinks in Philly Ryan’s Pub two doors down from my house he was also drinking with Johnny deep there before. I’ve met him loads he’s a lovely character. Unfortunately we don’t see much of him these days though at Christmas he’ll go for a pint again I’d say.
A friend of mine was living in Vienna in the 80s, and one afternoon he’s in his local bar having a quiet half-litre. As he’s sitting there he notices a group of guys at the bar asking the barman for directions. They didn’t speak German and the barman didn’t speak English so the conversation was going was nowhere. My friend knew where they wanted to go, so offered to show them the way. And so began a mad night of drinking with the Pogues.
My dad ended up on the lash with them back in the 80’s when they came to Manchester for a gig. He somehow ended up with them after their set at the Ritz and they all went out on the piss into Manny.. He said that Shane, despite his ability to get absolute twatted, was nevertheless a great chap
I was 17 years old when I discovered the Pogues. I still remember holding their album in a store in Montreal, Canada. I had heard a song and couldn't wait to hear the rest. On the back of the album was a note dedicating it to the victims of the stadium that had crumbled, killing tons of people. I am now 53 and still listen to them regularly. We're in 2024 and Shane will be sorely missed. Rest in one piece and forever with us and your unique verses, great poet of lost souls.
Great band.....they have a catalogue to be proud of and a legacy in folk, celtic, punk music that is full of original as well as traditional tunes....when will we see their like again
The song is written by Ewan MacColl, Kirsty MacColl's dad - (Kirsty coincidentally duetted on The Pogues perennial Christmas hit 'Fairytale of New York'.) First covered by The Dubliners; the Pogues adapted their version - but also by Julie Felix (found at this channel) and others. Good songs get handed around! Ewan MacColl also wrote 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', about his future wife Peggy Seeger (they're on this channel too), that Roberta Flack made into a massive hit.
