- AviationExplore... - BAD WEATHER AIRLINER LANDINGS. Heavy Crosswind Landings At Madeira Funchal Island Airport Portugal. Aircraft Landing Aborts and Bad Landings from one of the worlds dangerous Airports.
Flew to Madeira once from Lisbon on TAP and thought it was a beautiful and exciting way to arrive: circling around the island and dropping down suddenly on the airport runway. Truly thrilling and the passengers applauded the landing. My partner didn't find it quite as exhilarating as I did and my arm still has his hand print to prove it.
I have been flying all my life from and to that island as a passenger, and despite the fact that I'm normally used to hard landings on that runway, there were a couple of time that I cried and prayed.
Glad I saw this video today. I flew out of Madeira yesterday after a holiday!!
the talent of some of these guys is amazing. a few i thought were gonna be go arounds and they corrected it and got it down. amazing.
Whenever is your home you get used to land with bad weather conditions too. And Tap really have a very good skilled pilots and i do like them. Go Tap.
Thumbs up for all pilots whether down at first attempt or having the good sense to go around.
Wow, glad I didn't watch this before last Monday! Landed this way no probs thankfully :-)
id say awesome landings .. some aborts were ridiculousnessly
crazy
Im going Madeira this Wednesday, But Im Sure it goes the other way of the runway.. or is that only during summer days??
AirBus makes the most high tech and safest air liners in the world.
TAP and SATA - LIKE A BOSS :)
Portuguse Air Transports (TAP) 2 - Others 0
SATA 1
lol big lol
Last week I was at flight AB2646 from Düsseldorf to Funchal. The first landing attemp was aborted then the flight was diverted to Porto Santo where we had to wait for 3 hours. The next attemp wasn't comfortable at all, but finally we were on the ground.
+AstraJOM family member does NOT like flying, but has to fly to Madeira for a biking comp...he flies out later on today [7am] and was watching films of it on YT.... I just hope they all have a good flight and safe landing- the Crews would surely be used to it?! ...It looks horrible on the vids....hope they won't have to fly elsewhere, and re-fly to Madeira, but hey ho.. would rather the delay than the pilots risk any heroic landing!
Yes, I get worried about this too. I used to fly into Roanoke, VA a lot in the 1980s when the runway was short in 727s and they would do many go arounds, and finally land very far down the runway with full reverse thrust and we would be thrown forward with our faces inches from the seat in front of us. Heavy winds were often the problem those days, and it would make me extremely nervous, wishing they would just divert.
Anyone think about relocating the airport????
Här har jag också landat.
Piloten var duktig och vädret bra. Gick redan vid andra försöket.
yes you can, and we also make raves there on the summer, or better yet we did, just look for equinox madeira party, it was under the airport
good idea, build the runway right next to the coast because there is never any wind there.
Madeira as a volcanic mountain island, don´t have to many options to place a good flat area to build a segure runway, without crossing winds and mountains free!
i want to see u trying to land in those wx. conditions...
So what? We are all highly trained to cope with these extreme conditions.I want to live and would certainly not put my passengers and crew in jeopardy
Only TAP lands on first attempt!
Problem with aborting a landing is you get so many idiots who unbuckle their seat belt too early (how difficult is it to obey the instructions of the cabin crew?) that it's surprising that some people don't step off the plane as soon as it's about to land and then oops, plane is ascending and the idiots join together a messy puddle on the runway.
In fact only experienced pilots can land on the island with adverse weather
Love how only the Portugese airlines made it. Must be the experience. I'm sure the passengers were used to it as well though but feel sorry for the Aer Lingus, easyJet and Thomas Cook passengers!
Head/Cross wind. You can hear the GS MINI funktion of the Airbus in the last two landings. Also, would it have been a tailwind they would have had a higher GS which would be noticable, here you can see they are approaching very slow.
TAP Pilot by 3:44 has balls of steel to continue that landing!
This is just like GTA multiplayer in real life :D
The secret there is to use the engines to force the plane down (the wind comes from below)... notice how the first TAP looks like a rock coming down...
and then make it more gusty wind? nice sherlock
Trop de vent de travers pour atterrir. Cependant quelques bons pilotes ont bien réussi
How about a barrier blocking the wind?
Once i was in a plane heading to Madeira. It was raining hard. And when the plane didn't land i was like: omg the plane is being kidnapped , o:
Cool ))))
Grow trees along the runway to reduce the power of crosswinds
And a great landing is one you can walk away from... and the aircraft is still in flying conditions
Yeah portuguêse pilots are one of the best! Im glad im português e!
they need to put out the spoilers if they hit an updraft
lol yes I am... Man what was I on....Last time I go on YT at 4 am on no sleep lol
Though AirBus does pack in a whole lot more tech into their aircraft imho
doesnt matter if its boeing or airbus, to be a pilot it takes skill to fly, not some computerized metal tube...to all those saying airbus is safer, the only reason is boeing has been around a whole longer, than the government subsidized airbus...
EasyJet double FAIL xD
Portuguese pilots: triple win...they are the best (:
I know... i'm Portuguese :-D but thanks anyway :-P
Put the barrier where the wings cannot cut them down
All pilots from all companies get training flights as copilots and finally as pilots to be authorized to land at Madeira airport. Sometimes conditions are o e of the worst in the world; got this info at guardian newspaper, england.
It's not so dangerous anymore since the extension of the runway to the south. They built the runway on stilts!
Many negative comments here about UK pilots. They've nothing to prove; they know they are the best.
they are the best.Ive watched many landings at Madeira and experienced a few and British pilots are best for sheer skill calmness and professionalism.
Most TAP and SATA pilots came from the Portuguese Air Force, most of them are fighter pilots
The danger is,though,is that by persisting they land long and go off the end.
been there, done that. realy crazy
Where in the SEA ????? :D
Yep....The pucker factor was way up that day LOL
it's normal for Madeira to try more landings..
These are all go arounds!!!
only portuguese pilots have the skill to land there :)
Yes for sure they are , he kept descent vertical speed higher then normal with flaps 15 and on finale short adjusted stabilise trim. Some other pilots i see used a lot of ailerons to centreline with runway far way from touch down. I rather like keep crab landing and just about 20ft slightly push and aileron .
yeah but most ppl freak out when the plane doesn't land on the 1st time so they just simply land the plane even if not in a gentle way...of course that if they feel they're in danger they abort...
Green Tuga To land Airline gently and softly it doesn't mean that you landed it save even in friendly weather condition. When i flew to Madeira at 1995 the rwy was twice shorter and the hand landings really was hard. Three thinks in Madeira was hard : a)aiming touch down point b) flaring c) birds , seagulls hard to scare with shooting , you have them to nuke LOL
hahaha yeah thats what you get for la landing in an isle...
Green Tuga hmmmm a dutch pilot land me here but okay
heb het meegemaakt. nooit meer!
Paddy Irish man and paddy English man hesitated.
Some Pilots must hate landing here.
If conditions at that very minute allow the aircraft to land then the pilot will do so. If there is a gust of wind that unsettles the plane, then a sensible pilot will go around as it is unsafe to continue, OR the windshear warning is triggered and the pilot is legally bound to go around. It has absolutely nothing to do with having balls of steel. Quite the opposite. The skilled, experienced pilot with abort the landing at the first sign of anything untoward, that's out of his hands.
LOTS of Go arounds
the TAP and SATA pilots don't fuck around
All missed by UK at start
That pilot that went in nose low had the right idea, if aborting landing were no option.
portuguese pilot's ftw :D
Pilots "Uhhh Hang In There Folks Were Going In For Round #2" Co-pilot "Your Going Down Mother Narure" Mother Nature "Try Me Bitch" !
Then, the wings of airplanes would just cut them down.
no they aint boeing is actually ;) ur answer is completely wrong
There's a market for disposable boxer shorts.
2.26 fuck crosswinds let's land and be done with it.
in truth is everything at the same time :-D
Yes SATA is Portugese
Imagin being on the 4:00 one
Re the whole Boeing/Airbus debate. Another require an equal level of skill to fly. No, neither "flys themselves" as the media likes to say. Pilots still have to manage the flight in all aspects of operation. From an operational point of view, I prefer Boeing. Airbus takes too much control away from Pilots. For example, if I'm on short final and I'm too low and too slow, and I put full power in to correct my approach, the plane won't let me. Boeing doesn't care. It will stall if I make it.
Hahaha Easy Jet: Fook this lykee werr to dodgy
Tap: My Friend.. i own this shit!...
oh well im here now checking my utube lol
this airport is renamed to Cristiano Ronaldo Airport
No.
TAP pilots train Chuck Norris so yeah.
tiro o chapeu a estes pilhotos
So, Boeing-boys didn't even try hah?
SATA (azores airlines) ain't bad too bad too... how many companies would even try this go around
--> /watch?v=FvlsCf94vyI
or this landing (azores can be far worse than madeira just because of the weather:
--> /watch?v=jbKhlnqDIEk
airbus is statistically safer. fact. no opinion or debate involved.
hmmmmm ryanair got a pretty good deal off of Boeing though since Boeing have better planes AIrbis' Chief Executive said tht the price he was looking for airbis is too low lol i laugh at tht then he said tht airbus is better which it aint he just thinks tht because as u said many airlines are maniplulated into buying it tht doesnt necessarily mean its better lol oh and i have a question for u dude :) do u think mcdonnell douglas shoulda stayed in business?
oh shit im flying to maderia twomorrow and i already hate flying
looks like on only the portuguese are able to land . . .
dont worrie, we have exelent rescue means lmao
not true
airbus é MUITO MELHOR QUE BOEING BASTA OLHAR PARA O A380 nao á nenhum outro aviao que consegue sequer chegarlhe aos calcanhares............boeing comparado ao airbus é igual a comparar uma ps3 com uma ps1
The stupid, macho pilot will risk everyone's lives by continuing to land in conditions that are unsafe. Nothing to do with nationality or company really. I know which aircraft I would prefer to be on.
so? just coz boeing are here longer and have had more accidents means nothing if airbus hada been here it woulda been the same so really boeing are better they know they're stuff airbus dont think mathematecally and they have ugly planes and boeing had a plan to big a plane bigger than the A380 FACT!
airbus= shit if it aint boeing it aint going ;)
UK pilots are awful
