As a kid I just did not understand the lyrics but as an adult who’s gone through a divorce, this song just kills me. Anyone who’s had their heartbroken can relate to this song.
I remember this Song was the first one that i heard in my Life. Listening to it when it was released in 1980 as a 3yo boy it had such a huge Impact on me. Did not understand English at the Time yet the deep Sadness...
Really? That's no big thing in Sweden afaik. (Never divorced though.) I've always assumed that "the jugdes" are the same as "the Gods with minds as cold as ice".
This song was released in 1980. The 2 couples in ABBA were married. Both marriages were breaking up at the same time. Agnetha (blonde) was married to Bjorn (blonde). Anni-Frid (brunette) was married to Benny (brunette). Agnetha and Bjorn divorced in 1980. Anni-Frid and Benny divorced in 1981. ABBA member Bjorn wrote this after separating from wife and fellow band member, Agnetha Fältskog. It's about a divorce where one person doesn't want to separate and clings desperately to the marriage. It put Agnetha in the strange spot of being asked to sing a breakup song written by her ex-husband. "I had this image of a man walking through an empty house with all the furniture removed for the last time as the symbol of divorce and just describing what I see." Bjorn has said that while he usually didn't use drugs or alcohol while writing, he had a bottle of brandy next to him while writing the lyrics for this song. It was very personal to him. He told The London Times March 26, 2010: "Usually it's not a good idea to write when you're drunk, but it all came out on that one. By the time I wrote 'The gods may throw their dice' the bottle was empty."
If you watch the other video for this song (where they're on a stage) at one point you see Agnetha's (ex) husband briefly look over to her with the saddest look in his eye. Must've hurt to have to perform this song together.
@@shaundgb7367 A similar situation happened with No Doubt. Gwen and Tony were dating when the band first started. They broke up when they recorded Tragic Kingdom. Most of the songs on that album Gwen wrote about Tony. Imagine how they felt having to play those songs every concert. Then there's Fleetwood Mac. They all pushed through despite the break ups and divorces. How they do it, I don't know. I prefer not to see the ex after a break up but there is more to consider being in a group or band.

You got chills cause this is quality music, agnetha is not just beautiful on the outside! I have seen many singers try to sing this song, but they fail as they don't have the searing impact she did,she meant every word she sang, she is still a soprano with a delicate yet super powerful voice, what a talent and no autotune ! ABBA are pure joy, down to earth, they seem simple but the voices, instruments and production are out of this world. They are one and only .
Truly a beautiful breakup song... Teaches you about being an adult about it and accepting things when they end. Grew up with a lot of Abba in the house. One of the most talented bands of their era.... Remember you are loved..

The ABBA rabbit hole is very deep. My favorite ABBA song is"My Love My Life", another break-up song. Every Saturday I listen to a radio station out of Scotland. Three hours of non-stop ABBA music ⁉️ It's wonderful 💜💜💜
