"I Wanna Be Your Lover" hit US#11 (and R&B#1) on the Billboard charts in 1979, actually. His last major was 1994's treacly "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" (1994/US#3, UK#1), though the quality of his output gradually tapered-off, after the Sign '☮' the Times double-LP in 1987. After the mid-90s (and his famous record label disputes and name change), he pretty much lost all radio play of new material for the next quarter of a century, so "hits from every decade" doesn't ring true. He definitely had a couple more Gold albums, but his last gold single was 27 years ago this Summer. When Warner released The Hits/The B-Sides around that time, they did it as a sort of tombstone for his career and did everything they could to sink him from there. Many major 80s Popstars struggled to connect with audiences on the same level they did in the previous decade, though, including Michael Jackson, George Michael, and Whitney Houston - even if they still managed to squeak out some of their biggest sales numbers.
And to be honest, his really work began to suffer in the 90s, anyway. It may be hard to remember through the lens of 2021, because his 80s stuff sounds so fresh now, but 30 years ago Grunge, Metal, House, and Hip Hop had made his patented brand of Synth Funk sound very dated. By the time he formed the New Power Generation, his whole recording process changed from MIDI sequencers, drum machines (those iconic detuned Linn drums!), and synthesizers to live Funk and samples-samples-samples, and it definitely lost some of its magic. (for example, How poorly has "Batdance" aged? It just sounds like somebody got a sampler for Christmas, LOL.) By the time Diamonds and Pearls came out, he was now the leader of a bloated and turgid Funk act whose only real concessions to 1991 were an overreliance on stock samples and some truly terrible rapping. There's nothing wrong with samples, per se, but if INXS used the sample a few months earlier, people will notice, LOL. And Diamonds and Pearls was actually a pretty good album, but it was also his last album to have more than one hit single, and that was pretty much 30 years ago.

@@mblogan Yea I liked it but the soundtrack fueled the movie. The movie was a tool for the album promo so it was simple and sweet. It had a villian, a hero, a love story and great musical performances. It was groundbreaking for the era. I enjoyed "The Rose" with Bette Midler too. "Purple Rain" inspired big movies like 8 mile where the audience roots for the underdog.

I know for a fact that my oldest may find it very hard once I DEMISE to listen to any of Prince songs because I been a fan of him since I was a kid, I almost got detention after school because me and my best friend watch the MTV premier of the song 1999 and then when I got a little older I had gotten tickets to see him and I waited in the rain for that man which was in his home town and I was first in line because I got to camp out there. It was worth waiting because he gave me backstage passes to hang out with him and his people. Lisa, Wendy, and Dr where awesome 🖤 all I can say is that Prince the only man who lived that can wear makeup, show off his chest, wear pants that shows a round bottom, and can wear boots and steal ur girlfriend right in front of ur face and get away with it 💯 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Prince was one of America's greatest entertainers in the latter-half of the 20th Century. He was a great singer, songwriter, dancer, choreographer, guitarist, and pianist. Prince wrote a lot of hit songs under various aliases, such as "Alexander Nevermind". Prince wrote "Manic Monday" for The Bangles. He wrote "Nothing Compares To U" for Sinead O'Connor.
He was about 5'1! He really was a musical genius. Sometimes, genius brains walk a fine line of brilliance and cukoo!

I highly recommend you watch Purple Rain.....I’m Minnesota born and raised, a child of the 80’s, and I can tell you Prince’s blood runs through the artistic, cultural, and musical veins of this region. You should also understand he was a musical genius and anomaly. On his first album he wrote every note, played every single instrument, and sang every vocal part. It was ALL him. An artist on levels most of us cannot truly fathom 💜💜💜

In December of 1984 I went to the Purple Rain concert. As a Minneapolis girl, it was that much more special because he is one of us. Let me say, that 37 years later, that concert stands out as headlight of any performance I have ever witnessed. He was a magic man. A genius. A revolutionary. An icon. His loss is incalculable. I miss him.
At that time half of the brazilian girls (me included) was in love with Prince. The other half was into Michael Jackson. :)
