Super cool run. I totally forgot about that weapons glitch. I also forgot how sluggish the PAL version of this game is. I could never play this game in slow motion like that lmao.
So many of those nades in the tank fight were so close to going in the hatch. Landing one of those would have saved you so much time, health and ammo. Also it made my soul sad you called Rex Ray lol
The trick to the repelling part is to aim your jumps where ever the steam isn't at. You can also wait for it to stop, the Hind is fairly easy to dodge if you wait until you first hear the gun start to fire.
Won’t lie, it looks like thermal goggles would have made the mantis fight easier to be honest. Which I do think there is at least two times you can pick them up, but the second time I think is after the mantis fight because if I remember, the door to them is a level 5 door, but the door is only open before you save the DARPA Chief. Which I think it is saving the DARPA Chief and not taking the elevator(based off memory), because after that you can’t get them until you get the level 5 card.
However, I didn’t know this until now, but you have to pick up the SOCOM first otherwise the thermal goggles are replaced by the SOCOM in that room. Picking up the SOCOM while you can avoid it, remember the rule says to not shoot. Doesn’t say you cannot pick up the weapon. However, unless I guess you liked the extra challenge to the Mantis fight then I guess the goggles are irrelevant.
My mind is freaking blown at using grenades against Ocelot, for some reason I just assumed grenades wouldn't be allowed because of the explosives around Baker. 1:43:05 Already knew you saved Meryl when you had the bomb in your backpack :)
I think Johnny noticed it was ketchup in the cell because you used it after he had already partly entered the room, if it had been as he was still in the other room, it still would have worked? I think so anyway. Subscribed :)
I thought that might be the case. But I was spamming to put down the ketchup and just got the "no use" sound. Maybe In extreme I needed to wait for him to fall asleep and then use it, that might work. We need some MGS mythbusters lol
I think i just realized something new about the mantis battle. Is his stereo audio flipped to screw with your mind? Like around 36:45 when he goes invisible i hear the laughing from the wrong side.
Very well noticed. But no, its actually my fault, I flipped left and right accidentally in my recording setup and didn't notice untill much later as I was playing on a TV
if you use a cardboard box in the ninja fight he'll use nothing but the stomp attack on you, no matter what stage the fight is at (except for when his health reaches 0) , so hide in the box, he'll go for the stomp, unequip the box and move to the side, then hit him, repeat until his health goes to 0
Loving your video so far. Would love to play this again, if i find the time. Love this franchise. Happy its coming bad, sad kojima isnt involved. Happy konami pulled their head out their rear end. Mixed feeling about the MGS3 remake. My favorite of the series, no doubt. If they want to do a whole series of remakes, starting in order of timeline, then ill accept, but most most most deserving of a remake are the original Metal Gear games before Solid. Retell those two stories with modern technology, that would be great. Im sure most MGS fans missed out on the original games, those need attention
I'm the same. I have mixed feelings aboutbthe remake. But I am hy9e for the master collection. It will be good to have mgs1,2 and 3 on modern consoles and steam.
You used the ketchup too late. He has to be in the other room. Happened to me too. Without triggering alert, put your back to the door, move forward to go prone and then crawl backwards clipping through the door until the strap on snakes leg is nearly touching the door. Activate the American tomato bottle condiment before johnny enters the cell hall, wait for him to open the door, you will already be in range for strangulation, get up as soon as you see the question mark to immediately grab him. Drag him to the torture device without killing him if you want him to save the world in MGS4 and Bob's your step uncle Grandpa.
I was spamming to use the ketchup, I think i might have actually been far too early, and just needed to go through another round of torture. But yes, your set up is infact the best one
14:00 If this can help : You can throw another grenade not too long after killing the first soldier. If you time it right, it will explode right after the cut scene where the 2nd soldier takes over.
I played this game back when I was 15. I’ve never use the Nikita on Sniper wolf before. It’s never even crossed my mind. I also didn’t know that there was body armor in this game. At least I don’t remember there being body armor.
The body armour is in a completely optional area that you don't need to visit. And the nikita strat is something I have always done. But I always finish her off with the PSG1 so the cutscene makes sense 😅
I've done this run. Sniper Wolf 1 and the ending tunnel sequence are the only parts of the game where you HAVE to shoot. Everything else can be solved with C4, grenades, claymores, nikita, or the stinger.
@@sirrando when I commented I only watched up to entering the tank hanger. Only sounds were water dripping and wind up to that point. (Not counting player sounds like footsteps)
I forgot that it was just the later games that incentivized you not to kill anyone! This game does its best to leave you no choice, although it does make sense narratively with Liquid speech berating Solid about enjoying all the killing and being filled with the joy of battle.
I think that's the case. But I was trying well before he was there and just getting the "no use" sound effect. You are probably right though, should have been much earlier
Probably accidental explosive kills. Or tricking guards to fall to their death. That's usually what catch people out. That or the bike chase, I suggest using either stun grenades or the cold War camo and you should be golden

@@sirrando Ah, I see. Gotcha.
@@sirrando yeah if you only used the Nikita for the electrical transformer I would accept it but using it to kill the guards is a different matter ... personally gonna count this as a fail, Stinger and Nikita still fire projectiles, explosive or not that still counts as too close to a gun for me
Another banger dude. Great video looking forward to the next one.
About 80% of the way through editing. Hoping to be out before the end of the week
Thank you so much for the advice on punching before grabbing an enemy: getting caught damn near everytime was by far my biggest issue with Mgs1
Yeah, it is rough in the first one, also with all the guards being temepathic triggering an alert its a right pain. Glad it helped!
@@sirrando oh yeah I forgot that all of the genome soldiers are part of a damned hive mind in addition to the grabbing being difficult lol
@@Boristhaspydr I mean... they are our brothers after all!
Holding ≠ using. Seems like a legit run to me! Nicely done!
Thanks! glad you enjoyed it!
@@sirrando yeah very much! Looking forward to checking out the rest of your channel
@@JoshWiniberg Honestly, the older videos (like this one) feels so long ago, and so far below what I am trying to make now its mental. but glad you are enjoying my little corner of the internet!
@@sirrando haha give it more time and you'll probably look back and appreciate how good they are. I'm a musician and my favourite thing is always whatever I'm working on right now so it surprises me sometimes when people say their favourite piece of mine is something I wrote when I was 16, which is 20 years ago. I always thought that stuff was unrefined and basically rubbish, but with enough distance from it you can begin to appreciate (and even learn something from) your early work.
@@JoshWiniberg as a fellow musician, i get that. its more being a case of seeing how much has been learned in the space of time. Its not bad to look back, its just a trip as you can see how you would do it differently now
Very slick editing. Nice playthrough and commentary.
This was a great video to watch! Your voice is very soothing and great for narrating (and helping me sleep lol), and the level of video editing seriously made me think that you had way over 10k subs. Will definitely look forward to any more challenge runs you make in the future similar to this one 😁
Thank you! That is great to hear. I am still in the experimental stage of trying to find what works best so any and all feedback is very welcome!
My clearest memory of MGS was borrowing it from a school friend but he misplaced to case so I got it in a different one but when you have to call Meryl, I had no hint and had to scan all the codec frequencies to find hers.
Ahh fond memories.
man, thats a wild one, little did you know by spamming colonel you could have got her number to show up anyway.
Btw Johnny ALWAYS recognize its ketchup, you have to wait until he leaves the room to make it work
Ah ha, so my impatience got me, fair enough
I watched this over the past 3 days. Great job! I'm going to check out your MGS3 challenge next.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
Another trick, the stinger can take out those pesky turret cameras as well as the standard surveillance cameras
Came here for the Sniper Wolf fights, was not disappointed in the slightest.
They were kinda wild lol
super cool run been playing this game since i was little and didn't know some of the glitches the first sniper wolf fight had me laughing
Thanks! It was a lotta fun finding out about some of those tricks and whatnot
When you jumped in the truck I could just hear you say in your head 'hold up a minute, this doesn't seem right' 😂😂
"Your pretty good"
That challenge was so cool . It was like experiencing the game for the first time again tho the sad thing is the game doesn't let you fully complete it without guns
And we were so close aswell!
@@sirrando thankfully you can play mgs3 without using weapons except on bosses
@@alial-king9998 I have something a little different in mind for MGS3. I won't be doing it immediately, but it's a challenge I have never done seen before
obsessed w the delivery of "You just tried this, mate."
😂
57:24 you can avoid that section all together by doing what's called a Boba Skip where you get a guard push you through the frozen door that's on the staircase
Boba skip is super cool. Bit I was trying to not do any skips in this run.
Love the video man mgs 1 is super fun to watch and some more mgs content maybe the same challenge on the other games in the series would be super awesome
I do have a similar video on MGS2, and a tenchu run aswell. I am looking to do challenges outside of only MGS, but I will be doing MGS3 in a couple of videos time!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@sirrando no problem man mgs is probably my favourite talking simulator with stealth elements ever
@@DrBreadMann that is the best way to describe mgs I have heard!
amazing work, love the VR mission artwork, you should try the twin snakes version someday
Super cool run. I totally forgot about that weapons glitch.
I also forgot how sluggish the PAL version of this game is. I could never play this game in slow motion like that lmao.
Yeah, it is sluggish, makes the VR missions quite diffiicult. glad you enjoyed it
4:01 Snake is having a little too much fun with that chaff grenade
indeed a man of focus and commitment
Thank you
So many of those nades in the tank fight were so close to going in the hatch. Landing one of those would have saved you so much time, health and ammo.
Also it made my soul sad you called Rex Ray lol
Oh No! Did I? Rex is the best metal gear aswell
@@sirrando1:35:27 but also yes. Rex is amazing. When you got to operate it in 4 i fan boyed really hard.
I love MGS2 but everytime i hear sounds in MGS1 and how mechanics are simple and effective i got nostalgic about this game that i played back in 99
Metal gear solid 1 is fantastic
@@NoName-oy2tk I was looking for them as I played just never found them, if I did this again... I would get them lol
You made the Ocelot fight look easy man!
It took a few attempts, but once I had got a handle on the trick, it's fine
@@sirrando Think a UA-camr named BadHumans does a load of MGS myths and glitches. Worth checking out
With as many times as I’ve played this game, I can’t ever remember trying to use grenades in the Revolver Ocelot fight.
Neither did I untill I asked the speedrunners. The thought didn't even cross my mind
Mgsr is 100% the most welcoming and knowledgeable community around
They are. They were exceptionally helpful while running these 3 games. Big shout out to platonic guy and hau5test
@sirrando hard agree. Those lads have helped me through some tough times too. Big out to preciousroy, Tyler and plywood also ^_^
“So I’m just gonna Stinger him from across the room” that killed me and him lol
👀
Snake throwing stun grenades: "WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR, SHOOT!"
Looking forward for more challenges :D
if you use a cardboard box in the ninja fight he'll use nothing but the stomp attack on you, no matter what stage the fight is at (except for when his health reaches 0) , so hide in the box, he'll go for the stomp, unequip the box and move to the side, then hit him, repeat until his health goes to 0
Learn something new every day! thats a great strat, I love it!
Been a while since ive actually kept a video on my phone to watch later, Great watch!
Glad you enjoyed it!
You're pretty good!
Thanks Boss
MGS 3 is the one least in need of a remake, so it's strange that they picked that one to do.
What's the best video (or videos) to learn about all the Easter eggs of this masterpiece?
This guy, covers all the mgs games

that first sniper wolf encounter was hilarious
Thats a wild strategy isnt it! she goes all wobbly and mental!
Yes, you "choked Meryl out." I guess Mantis was pretending he didn't see that, lol.
Cool gameplay, ya earned my sub.
Thanks ever so much, glad you enjoyed the run
My first game was the twin snakes and it made me love the Metal gear franchise
Its a great franchise, twin snakes is one of my less played games, but it does look pretty!
No, the dreaded PAL version!
Anyway, great work.
Yeah, it's just the version I had atbthe time
love these videos
Thank you!
Sniper Wolf: "WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY HOUS-" *punched*
It's the only way to beat a sniper. Sneak up on em
Yikes, only one ration on extreme difficulty? 😵💫🦊
That's very extreme 😉
Yes
it is
You used the ketchup too late.
49:00 Very smart way. Though I didn't get how that happened...!
+ 1:10:00 Masterpiece 🔥
Why thank you
14:00 If this can help : You can throw another grenade not too long after killing the first soldier. If you time it right, it will explode right after the cut scene where the 2nd soldier takes over.
Huh, good strat, i didnt think of that!
I played this game back when I was 15. I’ve never use the Nikita on
Sniper wolf before.
Sniper wolf 1, you can do without
@@sirrando I learned that from this video. Pretty cool trick there.
On comma tower B there's 4 sets of cameras and if you time your chaff perfectly you can actually clear all 4 sets with just 3 chaff btw
Sniper wolf tryna bust out the 720 no scopes 😂😂
for mantis and fox you cab use the thermal goggle to see them when they're invisible.
I'm so used to the jams that are in MGS2 onwards. This feels so quiet. Nothing but ambient noises
There is some music, but its really wuite atmospheric
@@sirrando when I commented I only watched up to entering the tank hanger. Only sounds were water dripping and wind up to that point. (Not counting player sounds like footsteps)
I forgot that it was just the later games that incentivized you not to kill anyone! This game does its best to leave you no choice, although it does make sense narratively with Liquid speech berating Solid about enjoying all the killing and being filled with the joy of battle.
yup! minimum kills is 25 if I remember correctly
This :can you beat' series is awesome! subscribed
Thank you!
For Rex you do not need to use chaff at all just get under him and he cant hit you at all. It works for both phases
The Substance encounter/fight edits were an unexpected, but welcome surprise ❤
Yeah, I loved the boss rush titles in 2 so I remade them, and I think they worked quite well!
@@sirrando Just got to the first SW fight- I am crying at her strafing animation trying to hit you, never seen or heard about that before 💀
hey I am pretty sure Johnny saw it was ketchup because you used it while he was there
I think that's the case. But I was trying well before he was there and just getting the "no use" sound effect.
You are probably right though, should have been much earlier
I am doing a no kill mgs3 run for the Peacewalker achievement and it is tough!
Good content.
MGS3 without kills isba good achievement! Congrats!
Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@sirrando i am doing it at the moment. My first playthrough i only had 4 kills somehow.
Probably accidental explosive kills. Or tricking guards to fall to their death.
That's usually what catch people out. That or the bike chase, I suggest using either stun grenades or the cold War camo and you should be golden
@@sirrando thanks for the tips. I have bee. Making sure guards are not near any ledges or water when I knock them out.
I will also be getting rid of any vultures to avoid them leading to kills as well. I am using many guides to help me get everything and not miss anything if possible.
@@bustergundo516 Good luck! I'm sure you will smash it!
Another way to make the Mantis fight easier is to use the thermal goggles. You can hit hime while he's moving around.
I know, but I never found them, I was thrown off by not collecting the famas I regards to item placement
If you had changed the challenge to "firing a gun" it would entirely avoid the debate on the sniper wolf section.
I think you might have a point there
Big Boss would be proud
13:35 I read somewhere that the blast radius of the grenades is lower on Extreme so maybe that's the reason it's more difficult to do damage to the gunner.
I mean, that would do it! I was also finding it a lot harder than ever before to sink them inside the tank.
Only a fool trusts his life to a weapon.
exactly!
this is awesome I love playing these games on European extreme I was sad it wasn't a option in MGSTTP are you going to do MGS4, peace walker or MGS5
If I come up with a good enough challenge idea for them sure.
Honestly i tried beating MGS5 with no reflex mode, no markers, No detections and and no kills (obviously not including forced encounters for no detection) @@sirrando
The ketchup works only if u fully get it out before johnny sees you. U were almost done using the ketchup.
0:45 that's a forklift lol, not a truck
I always saw it as a truck, as a kid I thought it was a ice cream van. no idea where that came from
I saw it as a forklift as I saw the 2 forks on the ground
I’m surprised you didn’t do the two piece combo strat on liquid when fighting him on top of Rex
I tried a few times, but I could t quite nail the rhythm down, so just fought him normally
Honestly, w know sniper wolf 2 can be done with nikita, I'm a huga advocate of staying true to a challenge but in the interest of time I would have allowed you to use the sniper for the last shot or 2 instead of going all the way back to mantis tbh. The ammo is 100% there, the nikita start works so yeah, why not.
I want to preface my comments by saying you did an amazing job... way better at this game than I was lol... and I played the crap out of this back in the late 90s when it was new... and I didn't know about quite of few of the exploits you used... so kudos
Is that pre boss fight screen your creation . in my opinion it really is a bit jarring and takes the player out of the moment of the game
Also, I thought on extreme getting an alert was an automatic game over... its why without the radar I never made it very far on extreme.. (beat it on hard a bunch of times ..but never extreme )
Thanks! And to answer your questions. Yes I did make those boss fight transitions.
Euro Extreme was a automatic game over if you set it to be so from mgs2 onwards. That isn't an option in mgs1. Initially it feels like it though with how squishy he is on that difficulty
Ok. Yea thats weird how I remember on MDG1 (In the States) extreme being an automatic game over when seen...
This is brilliant ! Well done 👍 what about mgs2 no guns no rations ?
mgs2 no guns gets slapped down by a few places, Olga, shooting out the C4 bridge, the emma sniper section. thats why i went with no tranq for MGS2
@@sirrando yeah it’s a hard game even with the guns mate
played this so many times , But my mind was blown with this lol 3:51 , Had no idea about this
There's some interesting tech in this video for sure.
