  • Some sights and sounds of the Toronto subway on a Saturday afternoon in the nineteen-eighties. Evidently this footage is rare as the TTC hasn't run the subway cars in the video known as the Hawker-Siddeley H1 for almost 20 years.

The Eaton's and Simpson's bags and the Alfred E. Newman graphic seen on the videographer's t shirt in reflection, all memories of a simpler and less complicated time.

I would have been 10 years old back in 1988. Toronto was great back then and all through the 90s. I remember these trains. The seating was so comfortable.

Ahh 1988. Best. Year. Ever. 18 years old. There was nobody left on the train once we reached Finch.

Fascinating video, Brian! Nice seeing the Simpsons, Eatons and Bi-way bags. Also no cell phones, no masks and no social/physical distancing. At the time, we didn't realize how lucky we were...Hoping you're well. Best wishes from a fellow former Smith Transport employee!

I remember back in 98' or 99'... I got to be in the driver's seat of an H1! It was out of service but the operator was so nice that they stopped for us and she got to let me put my hand the control! With help of course! Believe it or not, it was on the Bloor-Danforth line! Line 2 known as today!
This was also the first time being in the driver's seat of a TTC subway train!

Listen to all the people communicating with each other. You step onto the subway platform now, its just silence.

Fascinating to see what has changed and what hasn't! The stations had not really changed at all up until the presto gates were installed.

RoseTech I believe it was just Simpson’s as there were no Simpson’s sears stores in downtown Toronto, that bag would have come from the Queen Street store. I have one never used Simpson’s bag. I was lucky to have come across it.

The R32s are "suspended" for now, but remain on the active roster. PATCO's fleet is from '68.

It's weird how the H1 cars didn't have a door chime.

Look at the size of those comfy seats. So roomy and wide. I got to ride these cars in early 2000 when I first came to Canada. They were excellent. Built to last. Should have kept one or two in service. The T1 is not bad but these were great. The only downside was that they had no AC.

the door chimes were a much later addition, it was just two whistles from the mid-train man

Where's the door chime? Like if you don't have door chime that would be dangerous because it doesn't remind people to stand clear.
