  • More than 1 million drivers, delivery workers and more in California could stay independent contractors if the state supreme court upholds Prop 22, a 2020 proposition sponsored by rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft and delivery apps like DoorDash and Instacart. Here's how the decision could transform the gig economy in California. Levi Sumagaysay reports for CalMatters.

Majority of you are clearly not aware of the fact that Lyft pays you $150 a week just for having an electric vehicle. You’re even less aware of the fact that you can lease a car through a dealership, not Uber or Lyft, but an actual car dealership and borrow the car for three years for less than $300 a month. I pay $60 a month in electricity to charge my EV, and I go 1800 miles. That used to cost me over $500 a month in gasoline. There are free EV chargers everywhere, he will never find a free gas station. And when you do pay for it, it’s on average about a quarter of the price of gasoline. Not to mention no oil changes.

It’s really simple what they consider an independent contractor has nothing to do with money. What there’re considering independent contractor is that you could log on and log off. That’s it that’s only independence you have is to accept a ride or don’t accept a ride. You realize it independent contractor should be able to set his own rate. When gas prices go up, you should be able to set your own rate to compensate for the fuel being more expensive when I started gas was at three dollars a gallon. A gallon of gasoline is closer to five dollars. And you have not been able to change your rate to compensate for those two dollars. Not not to mention insurance cost maintenance costs. The cost of food. All across-the-board everything has gone up. Except of the independent contractor working for Uber and Lyft. We have not been able to raise our rates due to inflation. We’re making less now than we did in 2015. And we have no say.

We are independent contractors in name only, the name the gig giants call us by. They control just about every aspect of our work except when we can log on or off, but even then, they have a total driving time rule and can deactivate you for any or no reason. Independent contractor, my a$$!

Passing Prop 22 will increase the cost of using a ride share app for everyone. Uber/Lyft are not going to redistribute company profit to drivers to pay for overtime, sick leave, insurance, etc... it's going to be added to your bill as another line item.
We just saw this play out with the $20 minimum for fast food workers -- the added cost is being passed on to the consumer in the form of higher menu prices, shrinkflation, and less services. It is not coming out of corporate profits.
This bill also shares the same ethical question: should the lowest paying jobs in the economy provide a sufficient living wage for a family (with dependents) to cover the high cost of living in California?

I think you mean repealing Prop 22. But yes, the prices for these services will probably increase. But we're paying for this already - if someone working for one of these companies without insurance visits the ER and they can't pay that bill, it eventually becomes a burden on the public.
Why should companies socialize the cost of doing business while privatizing the profit?
If the companies can't provide the service for the price the service really costs, then it shouldn't exist.
As for your ethical question: yes, working full time at the lowest paying job SHOULD provide a livable wage. Meaning housing, food, and savings. Saying someone working full time shouldn't have these things is just barbaric.

Prop 22 in Southern California was a failure. This whole thing is a failure. We are not able to function as independent contractors. You can prove me wrong by sending me a screenshot Weather you work for Uber or Lyft or ride share orride hail.. all I need is a screenshot of where you can adjust the price for your fee when gasoline hit seven dollars in Southern California. Or your insurance went up so you need to adjust your rate. Just take a screenshot and send it to me that you were able to adjust your rate.

I’ve done gig work off & on for years. Every app pays well when they first started, before Prop 22, but continue to decrease base pay every year. I do alright with Prop 22 in place. My concern is that if it’s struck down, the base pay will continue to shrink without the hourly minimum safety net, which will kill all app work as viable income.

Being classified as an independent contractor or an employee should be your choice. I deliver with UE. My net earnings average about $7 an hour after taxes and operating expenses. My car is now ruined and I can't pay my bills. Why don't the gig giants who we create enormous profits for guarantee at least a minimum wage for every minute I spend behind the wheel? Give us workers comp, pay their share of social security, overtime pay? The answer us all too obvious

There's this thing called public transportation, if you are in need of cheap. Rideshare is not public transportation, nor is it a service everyone is entitled to afford.
