  • Mazda is on a roll - it has created and developed some of the most engaging vehicles lately and more and more buyers are moving from conservative automakers like Toyota to modernized brand like Mazda as a result. What does this mean for the future of Mazda? How do they differentiate in the future? Those are some of the fascinating questions David Chao has asked Mazda global president Masahiro Moro while David was in Japan.

I'm surprised he went there, but he's completely right by saying that trust in mainstream media is at an all time low. And this even extends to the automotive media, with their clear pro EV bias and their persistent mischaracterization of Toyota's and Mazda's multi-pathway approach as being "anti-EV".

When the stupids follow the money and not do any research this is where they don’t open their minds or refuse to because they are afraid of change, they already know its a failure since the statistics show them what they don’t want to see, or they are purposefully bribed by certain countries to force down the public of their opinion rather then letting the people decide.

Mazda makes great vehicles that are reliable and very fun to drive. I worked at Mazda dealer service department for10 years back in the mid 2000's and when they got rid of the Ford partnership their product dramatically improved. It improved so much that I took a big pay cut because Mazda's rarely broke lol

Worked for Mazda for years and have owned and still own new Mazdas (CX90). Lots of people don't know the drive of a Mazda they are more concerned with things like heated rear seats. Hard to get the driving experience to those people. That new image you and Kirk showed of the new maybe Miata should bring some more interest to Mazda..

Mazda is in good hands with Masahiro at the helm, and while the product and value are excellent, it is a formidable challenge to get customers to switch from Toyota.

I worked alongside Mazda Power Train Engineers b4 the divorce between Ford and Mazda and was impressed with their Engineering and launch approach and execution. I think Mazda and Toyota are moving ahead of other OEM’s in design and development.

Thank You David for bringing us this great interview video. I'v had a bunch of Mazdas in my life, 1986, 1987, 2000 Mazda PU, Mazda 6 back when they where in joint with Ford to the Mazda 6 when Mazda owned the company 2016 and 2017 to a Mazda Miata 2017, awesome cars, I miss my Miata. Now I own my dads Mazda, a 2000 Mazda Millenia, Millennium Edition with 70,000 miles on it and of course I have a 2020 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium as my daily driver. I thought about trading my Millenia for a good used Miata RF, still thinking about it, every time I see one I say what a Beautiful Car.😀.. Hello Kirk

    Hi David!!
This was one of if not my favorite video that you have done to date and the reason why I say this is because when you get to talk to the top person, the CEO of a company that is getting the full vision, auditory and kinesthetic view of how that person thinks feels reacts and behaves and that’s key… I will say pure genius is emitted through the level and type of questions and individual asks, and you ask absolutely phenomenal opened and closed ended questions with an intelligence that only a few dozen people have in this world… DAVID, you are in my opinion, the best on the Internet today and you will remain that in the coming decades🇯🇵❤️🤍🇨🇦

I constantly talk with people, show them and sometimes give them a chance to drive my 2019 CX5 GT Turbo (I was looking at the RAV4 Hybrid and even the Highlander Hybrid before and found them to be far too cheap looking inside, were loud and buzzy on the road and I felt like I was driving a couch down the road and with zero steering feedback). I absolutely love it, it is by far the best vehicle out of aprox. 300 cars that I have ever owned (and I also loved my old 626 and my turbo charged 2002 Blazing Yellow NB2 Miata, I will always have a Mazda in my garage, there are more Mazda vehicles raced on any given day than any other brand). I used to be as surprised that more people did not know about how awesome the CX5 is but of late it seems more people are looking Mazda's way.
I just hope that Mazda does not lose sight of how well put together their vehicles are and that is the reason that once you are a Mazda owner, you always want one. Attention to the small things that matter like back doors that open almost 90 degrees, 40/20/40 split rear seat, ventilated seats that actually work, easy to find 5-30 oil, engine bay arranged so it will be easy to service, very good value for what you pay (making people like me, so happy about ownership that we constantly want to share an promote the band, etc.).
I also very much hope that Mazda sees that pretty much all the models that have a "0" at the end (CX30, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90) are not in line with their other great products. Mazda has over complicated these models and I for one would never buy any of them. CX30 has way too much, terrible black plastic on the outside (no vehicle from any manufaturer should have that ugly, cheap looking black plastic cladding, see how good the Mazda 3 and 6 look compared to the CX30 and even the CX5 to a lesser extent).
The 60, 70 up coming 80 and 90 all have major driveability issues and constantly get poor reviews, the inline 6 with the timing chain at the fire wall is an obvious attempt at a high dollar serivce cost, never mind that a mild hybrid system, never works and that idea should be forgotten to history.
Mazda needs to remember how using the K.I.S.S. (keep it stupid simple) formula, worked so well from the beginnings of Skyactiv until the CX_0 vehicles came along. Get back to your roots, keeping the 2.5 N/A or Turbo is the way to go, it is uber reliable, has a wonderful, inspiring tone under acceleration (but quiet and smooth when cruising), is easy and economical to service and could be coupled with a real, proper Toyota based hybrid system (bulletproof, planetary gear eCVT) to greatly improve fuel economy and pretty much make the perfect vehicle in the CX5 or a CX5 "L" perhaps ("long" or 3 row version). That and the Mazda 6 given the same treatment with the Mazda 6, still with front or AWD, N/A or Turbo and given a full hybrid in sedan hatch or L (wagon, that is offered in other countries by the way and is amazing, just not in North America but would sell like crazy here) and Mazda pretty much has the market covered in only 2 vehicles (just never use that stupid solid beam rear axle ever again and go back to fully independant suspension, this is a Mazda after all and not a 1985 Chevy Citation)!
Make the seats more comfortable for long drives as they are too firm and your butt gets sore, give the seats adjustable side bolstering (again, this is Mazda and is supposed to be a vehicle for people who love driving, like me), get rid of the terrible bose crap, (look at how Acura uses orthopedically designed seats that are the most comfortable I have ever sat in, including driving from Calgary to portland, OR with zero fatigue due to the seats, as well as pretty much the best stock audio system out there in the form of ELS (I am sure Mazda and Panasonic could come up with a similar but made for Mazda equivilant that is also amazing), fix the overly active blind spot warning and the very over active Smart City Braking that is sure to get us rear ended some time in the future and please, please, please, again, GET RID OF THE CHEAP, TERRIBLE BLACK PLASTIC OUTSIDE AND THE CHEAP TERRIBLE PIANO BLACK PLASTIC INSIDE, no one likes that look, also no one wants a fabric (table cloth like) covered dash or door cards that will be next to impossible to clean!
Give the new CX5 and Mazda 6 exterior design cues from the CX60 since that new exterior does look good for sure. But also get rid of the extreme slope of the CX5 back hatch that totally eats into the cargo bay, there is nothing wrong with an SUV that has a 90 degree, flat up and down hatch (maybe a little rounded on the sides for better tail light visibility and to reduce wind drag), pretty much everyone will appreciate that (plus having a pop open window like the first gen CRV is also a great idea so that easy access is there, you can haul longer things but still close the back door for safety and also the rear door power struts will not wear out as soon, its a great design.
If Mazda really wants to go to an even higher luxury feel, look to the small things that make the difference like a FULLY heated steering wheel, memory seats and lumbar/side bolster adjustment on the driver and passenger side as well, a quieter cabin (it is already quite good in that regard though) better front glass and paint that is more durable and less prone to rock chips, a full touch screen (for A.A., A.C.P. and Navi, even when the vehicle is in motion for map use, as well as use of the console dial), rear head rests that automatically drop forward when putting the back seat down (the cargo area latches to drop the rear seats are useless as the headrest hits the backside of the front seats so you have to go around to the front and move the seats forward, let the back seats drop and then move the front seats back into position, do it again when you want the back seats up again), fix the whistling noise that a strong cross wind makes (the rubber strips in the channel in the roof vibrate with a cross wind and make this sound as they are installed kind of loose), give it an 8spd auto to improve non hybrid fuel economy, move the HVAC controls a little higher up as you do have to take your eyes off the road to adjust things, its is not as intuitive as it could be, make sure the cargo floor is long and wide enough (with the back seats up) to fit 4 large suit cases laying down on their thinest side with the rear door closing so that 4 carry on's can also be put on top of those large cases and not obstruct the drivers rear view. Install good, strong LED cargo room lighting like what is in the European Corolla Wagon and include at least a 1500 watt (or more) 120V quad plug, power inverter in the cargo area to power a cooler and other items at the same time for long road trips, heated and cooled (not ventilated but cooled) front a rear seats (including the middle back seat) using Graphene as it is very fast to heat or cool, economical to operate, no longer requires perforations in the seats that can have drinks spilled into them, etc.
In fact using Graphene in the roof liner, door cards, dash, seats, under the floor, etc. can greatly reduce the need for HVAC, making the car much quieter, more comfortable (radiant, instead of forced air so no rise and fall of temps) and will be far better for fuel economy.
Pretty much change nothing else as the rest is already perfect.
Oh and Toyota has a 2, 5, 10, 25, 30, 50 and 100 year plan, always good to have in idea for the future of a major company.

For more recognition, they can start with increasing warranty term limits like Lexus and Mercedes. I just traded in a 14 CX9, was eyeing a new CX90 but heard of issues with the hybrid drive system. Couple the new model drive train and low 3/36 coverage we decided to move to a 23 Lexus. Mazda definitely has a place in the mainstream given the quality Japan built units. They just need to put their money where their mouths are by “backing them” like the luxury brands.

I'd say Mazda needs to at least quickly buy into hybrids and PHEVs. And from my personal tastes, I've always loved Mazdas, and I like that they are going more luxurious but the designs are a little soft. The one design that stands out for me is the CX50 which is sharper exterior but it's not a hybrid or PHEV. Thanks for the interview!

I wonder if Mazda will ever bring back a Mazda pickup to NA....the B series truck was really good, the motors they created, and used. Even the Ford 4.0 was reliable, but now that the truck segment is going to small engine turbo's, that would fit into there wheel house.

There may be different power plants, but that's not very important to me. What's important is the power and efficiency, and the ownership / driver experience, which includes being able to get a model with the proper utility at the proper price. If electrical power plants and a redesign of the vehicle make it difficult to insure and repair, that's obviously a no-go.

Ironically when he pointed out that Tesla made a truck that was canned when the semi/lorry ended up losing all of its battery power to haul a simple load that a normal 18-wheeler has to deal with. Batteries alone cannot deal with losing its energy when it has to go for endurance. Thats telling a person to eat cake before a sports game rather than actually eating proper meals. Sugar can get you so far until you burnout along with having a terrible stomach ache. If Tesla was smart about it they would’ve gone with hybrids or some other generator too keep the engine moving without having to get stuck in the middle of traffic.

Kyle Conner has feeling that Mazda will be one of the first companies to go out of business in the EV era. He thinks that Mazda lacks the funds to engineer the electric powertrains that Mazda needs to compete in the future. I think Mazda should take in the Nobe GT100 and market it as a Mazda. Nobe GT100 has the retro looks that the Miata embodied in the ‘90’s. The Nobe GT100 fits Mazda’s image as a fun to drive vehicle. With Mazda’s production experience, this Nobe GT100 can be an affordable EV for the masses. It is simple and accessible.

Truthfully I was hoping he would say something more inspiring or exciting.. even if the flip side is that Mazda seems to be trading up nowadays to the more sophisticated/refined car owner and therefore it probably is better to stress premium interiors/driving experience than make a bunch of bold Elon decorations (his case folks will forget if it doesn't happen or is literally years late and costlier)

Honda and Toyota are top tier Japanese car companies. Mazda and Subaru are associated with Toyota and have high quality, but maybe more fashion and pizzaz. I think Mazda should emphasize its relationship to Toyota. As far as getting the word out, just hand Mazda cars over to Scotty Kilmer, Doug DeMuro and Kris Kreifels at a racetrack for an hour. Credible. Zippy!

I've heard they improved the seats in the CX-5, making them softer. Good. But I've also seen orange peel paint and poorly fitted panels on the CX-30, which is made in Mexico. Then there's the newer inline 6 models which require the entire engine to be removed to access the timing chain. Not good.

Yes, it sounds as if he gets the current situation exactly. It feels as if all automotive persons, experts, manufacturers etc cannot make what we the people desire. Almost as if politicians, non- experts are deciding what vehicles should be. Quite crazy actually. EV is so impractical, infrastructure, the absolute pollution of planet with the old batteries, ludicrous.

EVs are being mandated into existence, and ICE is being mandated out of existence.
Mandates mandates MANDATES are why EVs exist, not demand.
People didn’t buy EVs, they bought Teslas.
And now the auto industry is seeing the lack of interest in EVs, the data of which was artificially inflated by automakers and even the government to support this EV agenda, when really, nobody wanted EVs. The cover has finally been blown.
EVs sitting on lots and automakers admitting to changing priorities and whatnot.

Imagine if we didn't buy into the EV hype. I've read and watched hundreds of videos and all I hear is the zero to 100 times, the size of the infotainment system and the cars are wonderful. No they aren't. There's so (too) much technology in the vehicles today, ice included.
Do we need cars that can go 200 or more kph? Does the average person need a car with the ever illusive 500k range when statistically most people go to work, visit some friends, do some shopping and have absolutely no need of such range? Mazda is absolutely correct. Diversify the technology which should also mean simplifying the cockpit of these cars for their most often used range.
