      @@concernedpatriot9314 depends on how bad. Direct Injection engines do not have the benefit that port injection and carb engines do of having the fuel air mixture literally wash the valves. So a direct injection motor like the sky active with a PCV system that runs to the intake manifold is subject to carbon build up on the valves which, depending on the severity of, can start decreasing compression due to the valves not closing all the way. If it’s that bad chances are the engine will need a new cylinder head or at least a valve job. The proactive solution would be an oil catch can between the PCV hose and it connections to the intake system and driving the engine really hard. I kid you not about the second part. Drive it loud and hard and you’re less likely to have the build up by keeping the valves hot.

      With a mix of highway and city, you can achieve 30 easily with the cx-5. For pure city driving I’ve been able to achieve at most around 26 mpg. But the skyactiv engine is incredibly efficient at cruising. I’ve gotten as much as over 40 mpg on a long trip on the highway cruising at 65. I’ve also noticed that this cars mpg sweet spot is at 50-55 mph. It can cruise at that speed on level ground keeping at 60mpg if the meter is true.

  • @nasturt2
    @nasturt2 5 років тому +5

    Mazda still need to address and fix the issue of diesel fuel leaking into the engine oil via injector rings during DPF regeneration cycles. Too many people caught out by this so far resulting in engine failure and huge 4-figure repair bills. Luckily I knew about the problem when my oil pressure light came on and told my mechanic exactly what to look for. Any skyactiv-d owners out there - trust me on this, change your oil and filter every 6000 miles and get the oil pump strainer checked/cleaned at no later than 80000 miles. Make sure the drive chain on the oil pump is also in good condition too during this as it can be inspected when you drop the oil sump to get at the strainer.

    2:50 This is not technically correct. The spark-controlled compression ignition runs ultra-lean with compression ignition when in low-load operation. If you're driving it "sporty" and loading the engine demanding high power, the engine will actually transition back to spark ignition with more fuel. The beauty of this system is that it can either energy optimize or power optimize on the fly, but you can't have your cake and eat it too.

    I no longer get turbo cars. They cause more problems and dirty your oil faster. Small engines with turbos and longer oil change intervals by the dealer are asking for problems.

    The X is great but cost $3,000 more. You'd have to have 500,000 miles on it before you'd see any savings in gas.

    OK, but are SKYACTIV-G engines reliable and 'maintenance-free' for many years, like my wife's Toyota Corolla or my 24v VR6? These engines have given us 11 and 19 years of service, with NO issues whatsoever! Original chains on the VR6 too! We just put synthetic oil in once a year, and premium Shell gas (with quality additives). Reason I ask... i'm thinking of a Mazda 3 with the 2.5L SKYACTIV-G motor.

    MPG?

  • @BigHeadClan
    @BigHeadClan 5 років тому +1

    People need to keep in mind that Automakers always talk up this technology, 20% may sound like massive improvement to the fuel efficiency but when you quantify that in the real world it usually equates to far less. We go through this exact same process every single time an automakers debuts new technology and we always end up disappointed.
    If the car in question makes 24 MPG combined, then a 20% increase only works out to be a improvement of about 3-4MPG which means your paying top-dollar and risk reliability issues for
    maybe 27-28MPG combined. Where as if you simply went with a mild-hybrid you would have gotten 30+ MPG combined, make more power and with technology that has been around for decades.
    The I.C.E simply isn't suited for high efficiency scenarios, KERS and mild-hybrid systems combined with light-weight materials is where we are going to be seeing real improvement
    from the auto-industry.

      The engine in question is the skyactiv-G far from 24MPG average.

    • @BigHeadClan
      @BigHeadClan 5 років тому

      @@BoogieDownProduction Wasn't my point, it was a toss away example to illustrate how over-blown manufactures can make MPG gains sound
      when they express them in percentages rather than L/Per 100KM or MPG.

    • @BoogieDownProduction
      @BoogieDownProduction 5 років тому +1

      @@BigHeadClan Its a good point but in this case we are talking specifically about a reasonably efficient engine that mazda has supposedly made more efficient. I guess we will see in a few months how it does.
