  • Welcome to Renny's Haworthia! This is the first of many videos I hope to make to show you how we keep our plants healthy and beautiful in Renny's Haworthia, and to introduce the exclusive hybrids created with love in our nursery.
    Plant on display: 'Lantern Festival'
    A seed grown hybrid raised from a batch of mixed variegated seeds produced in our nursery. No record of what goes into the making of this plant, but the beautiful lines on the windows certainly suggest that it has bayeri lineage. No offsets have been produced from this plant yet as of the time this video is made.
    It's our first video so we are learning as we film. Demonstrating the repotting is Satoru. He joined the nursery in 2016 and oversees everything related to the webstore. You will occasionally hear my voice in the background giving him a heads up with my camera movement. :)

    Another subscription from Iran. Happy to have you on YT too. I love your variegated bayeris/correctas and I wish to have most of them in my collection one day. Not only the haworthias but also triple red line Akadama and that special fertilizer. Looking forward to watch your next video. Best wishes

      Glad you enjoy the video. If you can’t find akadama in Iran, you can use part pumice, part soil in 7:3 ratio. If your soil has organic materials, let the cuts dry for a day before potting up.

      I water every 10 days during growing season, every 2 to 3 week during part dormant time ( in my climate, haws never really go completely dormant).

    Thank you for the videos. It's lovely to see your collection! I was wondering if you would be willing to answer a question: do you use the same potting media for offsets and seedlings (no or very fine roots)?

    No need to air dry after making those cuts?

    • @rennyshaworthia5745
      @rennyshaworthia5745  Рік тому +12

      I don’t dry the cuts before potting up and watering because I find that it does more harm to the plant when the roots are exposed to the air and dried up. Akadama is very fast draining. As long as excess water drains out completely, watering right away will not harm the plant. Make sure water is not pooled in the center of the rosette though.

    I love your plants. They are so beautiful! How often do you repot/replace the soil? What size do you use for the akadamas?

    • @rennyshaworthia5745
      @rennyshaworthia5745  Рік тому

      Hi Samantha, I try to repot every 3 years but most of the time I ran behind. The average is more like every 4 - 5 years. 😅

    No need to calous the wounds?

      @rennyshaworthia5745  Рік тому +10

      😂😂 so glad you brought it up! I was getting worried that Renny’s hairy fingers would be hot topic among haworthia growers. NO- those weren’t my hands. I was instructing and filming, Satoru was demonstrating.
      And no, I do not wait for callous. I water right away to make sure the roots are not dried up. Akadama works very well with this method.

    Amazing video and great help! Any idea for similar slow release fertilizer in European market?

    • @rennyshaworthia5745
      @rennyshaworthia5745  8 місяців тому

      Unfortunately I don't know what is available in European market, but I know some growers in France and Italy who use Magamp-K. Maybe it is available in your country as well?

    Amazing capture as always,sorry for this dumb question 😅 after cutting the roots do you let them dry out then pot it? or just pot it and let it heal with the watered akadama.

    What is that little tool you use to trim the stem?

    • @sabinpantis4149
      @sabinpantis4149 Рік тому +1

      Its a spatula used by dentist. Bent and sharpened on purpose

    • @rennyshaworthia5745
      @rennyshaworthia5745  Рік тому +4

      Hi Tony, it is a trimming tool widely used by nurseryman in Japan. It is similar looking to what Sabin said but is much thinner and is made especially for making incision between leaves. I usually offer them in my webstore but it is currently out-of-stock.

    Awesome man...❤ new subscriber from pakistan 🇵🇰
    But i have a newbie Q since i just start gardening like 6 months ago and haworthia's are ❤❤
    Aren't u worried about fungus or rot on the part u just cut especially u water it right after cutting and Repotting...

    • @rennyshaworthia5745
      @rennyshaworthia5745  8 місяців тому +1

      I get this comment/question a lot. No, I am not concerned about fungus or rot when I water newly cut roots. I worry more about the roots drying up and die if I let the plant dries. I find that this slows down the growth of my plants. Akadama is porous and absorbs only the right amount of water to keep the roots moist. It is also sterile. My mix has no organics, and I wash and clean the roots well before potting it up. I do not suggest this method if your soil contain organics.

      @@rennyshaworthia5745 thanks alot🙃
      Akadama here in my country is quite expensive...
      So on a friends suggestion am using
      Pumice 1.5 part
      Charcoal 1 part
      Cinder washed 1.5 part
      And compost 1.5 part
      By far it show good results but i will definitely try to shift on akadama over time
