Play-doh will Dry, shrink, and crack while working with it so that's no good. I've never tackled a project of that size but I use Sculpey for small stuff. Sculpey is a polymer clay that holds its shape very well and wont dry on you unless its baked.
Todd Broman Hey that was really cool. It would cost about 5K to do the back end of this car in that tooling clay. Not bad. But potters clay would cost about 1500. So I guess it depends on your budget and use. The tooling clay gets old and at some point cant be used again. The potters clay can be used indefinitely even if it dries out. But the tooling clay is good to make a direct fiberglass mold from which will save lots of labor and time.
right on, i live in the south so its too hot and humid for potters clay. I found that the most affordable way has been a layer up as close as possible with of cardboard, poor foam, sand it back about 1-2 inches below the working plane cover it then build up with tooling clay
+STIGZ you ever heard of polyurethane foam and small layer of molding clay?it would take me max of 500 dollars because I get the clay used in prototype modeling just ask around in car prototypes shop
S1KRYD I've needed to make a scoop for a long time to cool a custom turbo build I did this has given me the confidence to give it a try. I'm familiar with fiber glassing just not shaping the clay from scratch. Is it a special kind of clay I should use? Also do you need some kind of release agent besides the packing tape you used or is that good enough?
Rubber Duc Yes you can make your scoop very easy using this method. Use potters clay. Be sure to keep the clay moist. When finished Cover the clay with tin foil to separate the wet clay from the fiberglass materials. Use the packaging tape over the tin foil because tin foil loves fiberglass and will stick like crazy to it. No release agent is needed because you are not trying to release from a female mould. You are only trying to release from wet clay and tin foil.
It was funny because I was watching the video and I knew I had to A) seen it already and B) liked it alread....of course you can't like things twice but yes...it was amazing all over again!!
I use the most common resin used for bodykits. Polyester resin. There are a few diff types of polyester but any polyester resin will do.Once you find a polyester resin you like then stick to that same one throughout your project. I suggest the cheep polyester resin since there is not much of a differance between them. Remember that polyester resin has a shelf life of about 3 years. Some polyesters need cobolt added as well as the hardener.I suggest going for the resin that only needs the hardener
very true. that makes a lot of sense. i think the same can be said for the engineers who push cars past their limits in terms of performance. that takes a special talent not many have. the Ford GT for example with Shelby and Miller. that thing was a beautiful machine that still stands to this day more than 50 years later. if thats not art, i dont know what is.
I ABSOLUTELY love this video man! I have watched it a total of 4 times now, in the same sitting. I am planning on attempting my first fiberglass job today.. I plan on starting with a really small piece, and just working my way up to bigger panels. You make this look very very easy. I know it's not near as easy as it seems, but you definitely help me understand what I need to do, so for that, I thank you! From what I understand, Step 1: Take clay, and create the shape you are aiming for. Step
With all due respect, it wouldn't be that hard to do the whole car , Just do one panel at a time . Of course you'll have to make drawings of your desired panel design and take measurements but it can be done . I'm making my own panels for an old school convertible Mercedes. It's going to be a real head-turner when I'm finished. I may even post some videos of it . Best Regards
seeing people design and build cars and panels on here has inspired me to want to build my own car I have the design down as to what I want, now I actually have to start saving to fund the job, plus side my dad is a mechanic any trouble I run into I can go to him.
So you're telling me I can go to my local hardware store but a few packs of fiberglass cloth at $6 each. And a can of resin for $20. Get some clay and make my own body panels for my car?
That's what I call talent.I see so many vid's where the resin is so over done and this was done right and awesome but I don't need to tell you that. Love the car, Respect, You have made one S1C RYD
I love everything I just saw until I recognized the platform that this awsome work of art was based on, I just think the JZA80 body is perfect the way it is, but kudos to the artist on the work?
Thanks mate. Yes some love the car until they realize that the platform that was used is the JZA80. They feel that people should not mess with the original JZA80. I actually think the unmodified ones are ugly ducklings until modified. But truth is if I did not use this car it would still be rotting in the field I found it with no engine or gear box in it. Now it is a work of art with the vvti turbo 2JZ engine and the getrag 6sp box. A nice but rear compo for a car that was going to be sold as scrap metal and crushed and sent to the Chinese to make spaghetti cans :)
Wow do they have another one rotting some place Ive been in love with a MKIV Supra, I own its Father the SC300 and the MA70 Supra, but not the jza80😞, but a real cool job on this one of a kind reimagined Supra😉
I look forward to seeing your concept car in the future. I don't know why they did it that way. It seems easy just to do one panel at a time and making sure each panel goes well with the other. At least for the out side layer you can see any way.
If I had a '76 Cutlass and I wanted to make custom bodywork like this (Which looks amazing by the way) to make it look like the 6000 SUX from Robocop, what would you suggest?
Another approach I've seen--to cut down on how much clay you need, you can also attach blocks of foam to the car (with the original body panels still on it) and sculpt that down, and use clay for the small details. From there you can either pull a mold and make fiberglass parts from it and attach them to the original body panels, or do what S1KRYD did in this video where he creates the fiberglass piece off of it and attaches it back on.
areitu This is a good idea. But if you are going to pull a mould from off your clay you will not be able to use potters clay to do this. You would have to use the expensive Y2 clay or equivalent. This will cost you 10s of thousands.
Boldness has great genius and power. You can never fail. You just learn how to do it better. Practice practice practice is the only way to learn. Where some see failure I see on going progress and a learning process which eventually ends with perfection!
I have to say that at first I felt like this would be dumb when I saw you just dumping clay onto it but then stuff started really happening. This is a sick video and really cool part!
S1KRYD , thanks man this video helped a lot, I'm in 10 grade now and I was planning to build my dream car with a custom Body kit later on in life, it's a 1995 Mazda rx7 with a supercharged 3 rotor engine, with methanol injection and a custom wide body kit I made up so it doesn't look like a rx7 from the front, but from the back it will. The supercharger that is going to be on the car is going to be a Whipple 3.4l twin screw supercharger, and I estimate it to make 700whp at Max boost, which is 26 psi or more, it's a monster, Ive been drawing this car since the 6th grade, and this video final solved my problem on how im going to build the body kit, I wish I could show you the pictures
Its not painted yet you idiot! The black is a guide coat, so when he does finally start prepping it for paint, any flat spots or imperfections show up..
Haha the paint job to come is the easiest part of the equation but good job eagle eyes pointing out that something that hasnt been done looks like crap
this is crazy, never imagined this could be done this way. as someone else said this looks like real dedication amd patience. i salute you sir and greag work btw
WOW You are truly blessed with God given talent for mad skills in clay and glass, thanks so much for sharing your gift with the world and inspiring others in creativity!
Looks really nice, and good to see someone stay away from the normally uset mats of fibraglass, with no structure of the fibres. learned this teqnuice at school, and a compination of fibregalss, metal net, and carbonfiber turned out stronger than the aliminiumplate we had to comparism. Never tought of clay as a mold tho. 10/10
Man that tail end looks great, kind of a Ferrari and a GTR mixed togeather in my opinion! It must be great being able to say that you created that. Props all around!
YOU ARE THE MAN. SUPER CAR FROM CLAY AND FIBER GLASS THAT IS HOW A WARRIOR FIGHTS WITH GRASS STICK IF HE LOST HIS SWORD. YOU GAVESUPER CAR BRANDS NIGHTMARES.
Thanks. But I would not expect a Subaru lover to like anything else apart from a Subaru. Each to his own I say. Just imagine if everyone in the world liked only Subaru's. It would be a very boring world.
S1KRYD I see what you're saying... but I'm not really a one-make kind of guy. I guess I just don't like the over the top body kits... even Veil Side kits I think are... well, let's just say I don't appreciate them. again... I think it's great that you can do that-that is really awesome. but if I had that skill level I would do things of a less flamboyant nature-that's all. keep doing the awesome stuff you do though... =)
I'll have to admit. At first I thought your new panel was solely going to be made from clay, so I thought the added weight, and the actual durability of the clay would have to be a huge disadvantage. Then you did the foil layer and the fiberglass and I shut up real fast lol. That's pretty badass tho, one could actually design countless items using these same principals, you my friend are a god damn genius.
I decided to make a BMW front end kind of deal with my 1997 celica, I have 2012 328i headlights and front bumper which im going to modify to make it more aggressive and more aerodynamic, I will upload a video of what ive tested so far so you could see where its going lol, youre an inspiration man, keep up your awesome videos!

They are vertical doors. You can buy the hinges from verticaldoors They come specific to your car. I had to add extra steel to mine to make them legal in my country.
If you do not have the patience to watch the full video then skip to 9:20 to see how the whole car was made using the clay method :)
Hey what kind of clay do u use??? the air-dry or the one that you have to bake to harden??
uh Just potters clay. Keep it wet throughout the process
Could you like, go faster dude?
really nice man! i would like to see the ferrari progress until the final work
***** No Problem. Subscribe and you will see it :)
I'm ridiculously impressed, not for your car enthusiasm, but your skills as an artist, this is really good stuff.

This is actually how automakers sculpture prototype designs. Awesome work.
This is one of the coolest things I've seen, amazing!

Holy that is a ridiculous amount of work. Awesome final product! Wish I had the space and time for something like this.
welp......i have to go now and turn my car into the 1990's batmobile
I was thinking something similar lol. I think I got myself a new hobby.
Wow that car is a work of Art. This guy can create race cars with this skill.
So unique and so inspiring mate, It's a one of a kind and I admire your work and skills!!! :-) :-)
And i was doubted when i said i wanted to make custom panels for my camaro. Thank you for making my dreams come true
there was a bug in the clay

Mad respect.

Very interesting. You will need to clay the whole car like I did with this project and make a set of panels to attach to your car.
So remove the original panels and toss em, and stick clay to the car directly so it fits, since I doubt I'd need the old paneling for much else.
Another approach I've seen--to cut down on how much clay you need, you can also attach blocks of foam to the car (with the original body panels still on it) and sculpt that down, and use clay for the small details. great job on the diffuser
very strong. Stronger than 6 layers of normal fiberglass
Pretty damn cool
you are an impressive person. period. freakin awesome
Not a fan of the doors, but LOVE the car!!
