I will be 50 in April. I still remember hearing Sabbath for the first time. I must have been 4 or 5. I couldn't understand or appreciate the goosebumps or what I was hearing until years later. For me.. There is nothing like a great Heavy Metal song.. 🤘💪👊
Probably the coolest Iron Maiden performance I have ever seen, going all the way back to 1980. These guys never needed the gimmicks to begin with, it's all right there in the music, and how tight they play.
Nah, the bass in the mix is way too high and sounds really clunky, like a loose nut rolling around in a tyre or something, otherwise every body else is on top form.
@@TheLOD2099 I didn't claim it wasn't okay, I distinctly wrote it wouldn't have been necessary to begin with, because they would have made it anyway. A strawman argument is not an argument, only a waste of other people's time. Do try to control your excitement over a fictional character.
Legends. Maidens ability to have story/lyric and intensity arcs over long format then “taper” off and end just as hard as the peak. Masters of their craft. Period.
Klack Klack Klack it's like percussive on top of all that that bottom, Best! I saw a tribute band play this & the bass player played with a pick...no, it didn't work
Lots of treble on bass amp and use nails while picking strig with right hand. Use 2 fingers, start with the middle finger and do triplets. Do this and you will play like steve
What a band! I’m 57 and seen these guys 7 times throughout my life. I saw the original Paul D’ianno line up way back when. Saw them last in Sydney. Killers is one of the greatest rock albums ever written. Listening to this now hit hard. I love these guys.
I first saw them in 1980 when was 11 they did a gig at a small venue in my hometown , Stoke , UK After the show we hung around outside the stage door of the venue , some fans banged on the door wanting to get in and meet the band After half an hour of persistence, the door flew open and a couple of security guys came out and ushered about 10 people in , me included The band were all there and we all got talking and getting autographs etc then Dave Murray came over to me and said “ here you go son this is for you “ He handed me an Iron Maiden purple pin badge which I have treasured to this day All the guys were so welcoming and down to earth That was one of life’s great experiences I will never forget
In 2006, there was a blitzkrieg commanded by the destructive Legion called Iron Maiden in the Beatles' temple! The fact is this: The Abbey Road studio was one before Iron Maiden's invasion and afterwards it was filled with a shining force that only true Heavy Metal is capable of producing.LONG LIVE THE IRONS!!!! Cry Beatles!!!
Saw them in 1983 (I was a junior in high school) at Long Beach Arena with Fastway and Saxon (Piece of Mind tour). Saxon recorded a live album that night I believe. Friend called me up that night 2 hours before showtime and said "let's just go and see if we can get tickets". We hopped in my dad's pinto station wagon and we get there right before showtime. All they had were obstructed view behind a metal beam off to the side. We took them and as soon as the lights went down for Fastway we ran down to the railing, hopped over onto the risers and got seats level with the stage. Stood for the whole show on our seats. Good times.
Bruce’s voice here is absolutely spectacular. Mind is blown every time I watch this. And what a performance by the rest of the band too. Maiden will forever be my ultimate heroes.
It's amazing how the tempo changes continuously and yet everything fits together tightly. Nobody in the band needs a click track, it's completely intuitive.
@@MotownGuitarJoe Click tracks kill all the dynamics and feelings of it being a live performance. Unless you have backing tracks going, you should never need it for playing live.
Of all the Bands in the world Maiden is one of my very few Favorites of all time!! They sound as good now as they did 25-30 years ago.. Incredible artists one and all!! I Love you guys!! Great recording thank you for sharing this!!! WOW
Best Metal band of all time. Name one better. I'll wait here. Even the mighty Metallica looks up to these guys. No seriously, I come back to this video all the time. Lol.
@@metal-gods Sabbath CREATED Metal. And you may have a point. I'll put Number of the Beast up against just about any Sabbath album and come away with without a loser.
Not a Les Paul or pointy headstock in sight!!! It amazes me that over the years Murray, Smith and Gers aren't acknowledged more as pioneering guitarists, and absolute solo demons. Much respect to the band and their musical abilities.
Haha. 20 years ago, I was listening to this song for the first time being a 90s kid. 20 years later, I’m reading your comment about this song being 40 years old. Time flies, but my friend, this song, is here to stay and rock!!!
I saw Iron Maiden on tour, when they were presenting the world with their NEW singer, Bruce Dickinson. At the time, I never would have guessed that they'd still be here, still doing this. Too cool!
4:38 at 51 years of age next week and this part still gives chills after all this time. Makes me want to jump in a muscle car and start hauling at top speed.
Never seen the band like this. Maybe it's the setting but it makes you realize and appreciate how much effort does Bruce put into his singing. Amazing but surely takes a heavy toll.
We know this, and yet, Maiden is still going strong today, even after Nicko had a stroke. Amazing. One of the best metal bands in history, seen em in concert 38 times. 🤘🤘
I’ll never forget how I first heard of Iron Maiden. I was with a buddy in Vegas for a work convention, walked into the hotel room, turned in the tv and there was this concert with what looked like over 70 thousand people and we both were like who the hell is this? They must be famous if so many came to see them. And what was the song playing in the moment ? Fear of the dark. I was instantly mesmerized and a huge fan ever since.
The intimate atmosphere and relaxed attitude (Bruce starts with one hand in his pocket, they're wearing everyday clothes...) leads to a very different, and rare, but still fantastically good, interpretation of this song. Thanks for sharing this!
so weird seeing maiden live in studio like this, never even thought of looking something like this up. no screaming audiences, complicated scenography, eddie fighting around or guys running around a 100m wide stage, but still pretty fucking epic
Born in '91, I've seen them live 3 times. These guys are amazing, hands down my favorite band from that era. I vividly remember Tony Hawk 4 on Alcatraz back in 02-03, jamming to Number of the Beast. It was one of my first introductions to these guys. Few years later, became a drummer and the first song I ever tried to learn to play was Run to the Hills. Forever a fan.
I've always believed that a really good band can play live and sound exactly like the studio recording. Maiden pulls this off with such ease... Such precision and clarity. Truly gifted musicians...
The fact that after all these decades they still play this song with the same energy and drive is yet another reason among many to their professionalism. Plus, they just plain kick f***’n ass.

First time I listen to Iron Maiden I was not older than 20 or 21 ... Such a surprise! The compact, solid, almost symphonic "epic" sound left me shocked. And I wasn't a rookie hearing complex music... classical, heavy metal, pop, soul, funk, or even jazz. (Yes I am eclectic when it comes to music). But they [as Scorpions, and Our beloved Eddie in first place] built something different, something we had never heard before. We were "Beatles-first Deep Purple-next" listeners... And then in the 80's they came with that out of the box formula... Oh dear God! What a wonderful times (paraphrasing the great Bob Thiele song perfectly performed by Louis Armstrong).
I remember hearing Maiden right after graduating high school in like mid 1981. Was able to see them in early September of 1982 in Boise, Idaho. I was hooked big time and every opportunity that I had to see them I put everything else aside…every tour from The Beast thru Book of Souls. Joining the military really helped as I was able to see them in Europe, especially Monsters of Rock 1992 and a week later Super Rock. Was stationed in Mannheim/Sandhofen/Coleman Barracks, Germany, so Super Rock was just a few minutes by train and bus. UP THE IRONS 🤘🤘🤘
Heavy metal is still alive
To think that this song is 42 years old and still a real punch in the face.
Fuck me now I feel really old
I'm only 41! I've been listening to this since birth!

This is what a real band looks like.
Bruce just casually strolling around, one hand in a pocket, belting out that incredible voice...
I kind of expected him to run around shouting "Scream for me Abbey Road!!"
