  • In this video I pay a third and final (perhaps) visit to Whinney Banks shops on Acklam Road in Middlesbrough to finalise and clarify a few things that were outstanding from my previous videos (if you haven't seen them here are the links):
    • Exploring Whinney Bank...
    • Exploring Whinney Bank...
This video is a little different, and after watching the first 10 minutes, you'll probably want to fire up your computer and finish the journey on your own (instead of listening to me do it)! However, I'm concious that not everyone has access to a computer (some using other devices to watch my videos) so I thought it would be beneficial for those people, if I covered the entire row of shops.
Please do feel free to share any memories you have of the shops as I'm always keen to read them, and thank you to all that have commented on my previous videos. You helped to make that one, off the cuff ten minute video into an entire series!
Thanks must also go to Craig Smith who identified 'Fillagre' in the UA-cam comments section. I'm sure you rekindled a memory for many there (including myself).
As always, thanks go to my good mate James Stubbs at James Stubbs photography for his support and guidance. www.flickr.com/photos/jamesst...
All credits for the content of this video of course go to Google Street View. A fantastic tool that makes life much easier for people like me that have an interest in the history of our town.
Thanks for watching. See you in the next video ;)
    Middlesbrough Mike

Hi Mike. Thanks for the name check. One thing not mentioned is the house next to the supermarket which became a dental surgery. Opened and operated by my uncles brother in law, Philip Lunnon. I recall this was early 80’s.

I didn't go as far up as that. I've been going to Lunnons for as long as I can remember. My dentist for years was Miss Powell. Sadly she left a few years ago. Don't recognise anyone there now.

@@middlesbroughmike1027just back from a long weekend in Boro. Visited Whinney Banks and many other old haunts. Had a tour of the Town Hall. If you get chance, do that and record it. The court room and cells are simply amazing, and something I knew nothing about. In one of the stained glass windows is the name of the Pianist Cyril Smith. My great uncle and a world renowned pianist(was the reason I went there), but got shown round by a wonderful chap whose surname is(I think) Boynton? Same as one of the old Prissick base schools.

It certainly did. That was one of the shops I remembered vividly when I first started this series of videos

My mam and dad bought the chippy before it was Carol's Plaice off the Harkness'.
Me dad always wanted his own Chippy and called it Mr. Chips. Was a beauty chippy, I worked out the back cutting the chips.
Neil was the green grocer next door and the other side was Newboulds.
In the video it describes a nik-nak shop which was indeed there, can't remember its sodding name now though.

I got hit by a car when I was 7 or 8 at the crossing outside what used to be dons cellar. Thankfully someone in the tailback knew cpr but I spent the summer in the old kids ward in the general hospital.

I have a distant memory of that unit being fire damaged. I also remember it selling equestrian supplies and was suprised not to see evidence of that on the Google timeline.

That's the only shop I ever remember being there too (other than the ones that came after of course). It relocated to the old Charlie Brown's unit on Newport Road (now a charity shop with a quick fit out the back) before closing down altogether.

@stev5376 yes, it was Charlie Brown's before Motor World went there. My mate was the manager of the Acklam Road one when it moved to Newport Road. As I recall the Quick Fit was already on site when they arrived (or not long after) as they used the old Charlie Brown's workshop
