Hi, I'm Mike and I'm very much a child of the 80s.
I love anything to do with the 1980s and have an interest in memorabilia from the (best) decade.
I've lived in Middlesbrough all my life and love the place. I have fond memories of growing up in the area and have a fascination with old places in the town, particularly retail units and places I used to visit as a child. I love to wander around to see what I can find (and what memories I can trigger) and go 'behind the scenes' whenever I can.
I'm a self taught video editor and have limited equipment (which is slowly growing) but I do my best to put the videos together in a way that will entertain and inform. I've really enjoyed learning how to edit videos and I continue to develop new skills.
I also have an interest in Retro and Vintage bikes and arrange two yearly shows:
retroraleighshow
theraleighchoppershow
I hope you enjoy my videos.
Thanks, Middlesbrough Mike.

Exploring the old Halfords unit, Linthorpe Rd. Middlesbrough Discount Store.
In this video I take a look at the old Halfords unit located on 121 - 123 Linthorpe road.
A favourite place of mine from my childhood, it was vacated by Halfords in the late 90's and was then occupied by Brighthouse. After their closure in 2020, the unit remained vacant until May 2024, where it was occupied by the Middlesbrough Discount Store. :)
Upon realising the unit was open once again, I decided to speak to the staff there in an attempt to have a look around in the hope that Brighthouse (and the new occupiers) hadn't changed too much, and that some remenants of the Halfords unit I had fond memories of remained.
Join me to see how I got on.
Thanks:
*My sincere thanks go to the Manger of the Middlesbrough Discount Store for taking the time to chat to me and invite me along to look around (and also for allowing me to film inside).
*Thanks to the currernt Landlord for taking the time to chat to me and helping me to piece together the story of the unit.
*Thanks to Halfords, again for taking the time to talk to me and attempting to help me with dates.
*And as always, thanks to my mate James Stubbs for his ongoing support, equiment use, and for filming on the day.

In this video I take a nostalgic walk around the Whinney Banks estate in Middlesbrough. Although I lived in Acklam with my parents, my Grandparents (on my Mam's side) lived on the estate, and I spent most weekends there (with very fond memories)! The estate has been subject to redevelopement for the best part of 20 years now so I thought it would be nice to take a look at what remains of the es...

In this video I take a look behind the shutters of the old Topshop / Topman unit in the Cleveland Centre, Middlesbrough. Formally home to Littlewoods, it closed in 2002 and was adapted over the next year or so into 2 smaller units (which as you'll see, are still huge)! Once completed, one of the units was (and still is) occupied by New Look, the other, Topshop, which sadly closed it's doors in ...

In this video we are taking a look at the (sad) removal of the scale replica Endeavour Ship, sailed by the famous Captain Cook, from the Cleveland Centre Middlesbrough. The ship was proudly displayed in 'Centre Mall' for nearly 20 years, finally being removed in 2005 to make way for a large retail development (as was the need at the time). What remains of the space that was created can be seen ...

Thank you for your efforts to preserve the past.
Great video, Thanks

Once again class video , can you not get access to old binns unit 🤞🏻
Thanks Mike 👍
At one point there were two Newboulds shops in the Cleveland Centre. There was Newboulds Delicatessen next to Supernatural a long gone favourite café of ours. The butchers was originally Munro before they were taken over and rebranded at Newboulds. Additionally there was another shop on Linthorpe Road opposite Marks & Spencer and if I'm not mistaken another shop way down the other end of Linthorpe Road.
I found a few images of the Newbolds that was in Centre Mall in the Cleveland Centre whilst I was in the archive room. I'd forgotten about the one that was opposite M&S until someone posteed a picture on the MOM FB group of that parade of shops. JJB Sports (who relocated to Captain Cooks Square above Poundland) were on the same section.
@middlesbroughmike1027 Newboulds were in two different shops in that block, I have a very faint memory of old 70s era shop with a very plain fascia with Newboulds in black writing on a white background then they moved next door or next door but one to a more upmarket type shop, I don't think the Blue logo was in then but the logo with Newboulds in script writing had been introduced I seem to remember it being more grey in colour as we has a very shortlived Newboulds in Darlington in the very same style.
Great video layout of that shop was the same as dovecot sale rooms now dovecot bar :)
@macdee8628 stairs are at the back of the dovecot rather that set off to one side but other than that you're pretty much right
@@middlesbroughmike1027 Can you remember the games store on Linthorpe road a few doors up from the crown bingo back in the day it was a computer game shop upstairs
@macdee8628 yeah, it was Chips. Moved onto Boro road where Richer Sounds is now. I was told the guys now have Super Games World on Newport Rd but haven't checked the validity of that info
Great video, brought back many memories. I went to Oaklands senior school for 2yrs whilst they were making room for us at Stainsby which then became Acklam Grange in my 3rd yr. I also worked more the council mid 90's and my area was Area 5 Whinney Banks, town, Over The Border and Boyds Estate. Lots of memories of cleaning gutters, replacing fallpipes, always seemed to Eckert Avenue and Springfield Road. Its been a long time since I was there and I don't think there is much left of the bottom end of the estate.
God, I remember this place from when I was a kid. Crazy to think it's still there.
@hellspawn sadly it's no longer open obviously but great that it's survived so well
Great bit of film. I can only vaguely remember it from my student days in the Boro but it's good to see that it's now occupied by such a well-stocked and fascinating shop. You're right to thank them for humouring you but I suspect that a lot of the reason for them being so helpful is due to you being a good bloke doing such positive work. Merry Christmas, MM.
Thanks for your kind words. It's appreciated. And yes, it's great to see the unit open once again. Long may it remain! Merry Christmas :)
Nice one
thank you for the memories keep up the good work
Lovely video
Thanks for sharing! And your effort you put into the videos love the old Cleveland centre Xmas display brings back all the memories as a child 🌲⛄❄️🎄🎁🤶🏻
I used to take my two to the displays they absolutely loved it , thanks Mike 👍
Marvellous. Surprised how well I remember some of those ads. Mind you, there's a limit to how many times you can hear "it's worth looking into".
I thought the same thing! I'm sure when they were occasionally played on the Radio though it wasn't quite as annoying!
The best of memories there, when Middlesbrough was one of my favourite places to visit ❤❤❤❤
oh how I wish Christmas shopping was still like this
Christmas Display
❤❤❤❤❤❤ just love this, why oh why did they spoil it, just love this xx
Why would they stop doing this ?? It looks amazing
At the time of the redevelopment of the space, retail was very different and large unit were in high demand. Of course, the opposite is the case now with smaller, cheaper units being more desirable. Large retail units are pretty much impossible to fill hence the change of use away from retail from a lot of them.
Ah good memories 🎅🏻🎄Shame they spoilt it by changing it all.
Yeah it is a shame. The space around the Endeavour was really nice, a comunal space for all rather than just retail.
@@middlesbroughmike1027where abouts in Boro are you from?
Airo was a fruit shop and shaff barbers was shipmans and the chinese was a butchers
Sorry it was the coronation not camebridge
Motorola was pybus. Then going to the right that was o rowells I was born there the next one was w creator butcher my God parents. Going over the cobbles was Lewis dairy with scoby smith caravans. My nana lived on wetherhead avenue. And I went to Whitney banks school with Margaret and Geraldine lancaster who's parents worked there before taking it on. My parents worked and lived above rowells..his brother wilf 9:43 I think had a similar shop next to the camebridge pub.happy days we moved when I was in second year seniors
And I can remember the toilets on weather head ave
Weather head Ave used to go straight on to Acklam road ,before they cut it off for some reason
@PaulWhatmore-h2t I thought it must have done that at some point. I was probably cut off to save congestion as there's x2 light controlled junctions either side and a road right opposite
The mayor was Middlesbrough mayor Michael J Carr.
I was born at 2 Mattison avenue my granddads house. He was called Albert Poole. Always in the Roseberry pub. Now live in Oldham so don't know If they have gone.
The Roseberry has been closed for some time now. It was supposed to be converted into flats but it never happened. The petrol Station/Garage site opposite is currently being re developed into a conveniece store
Hi!Mike ,did you sell all your dunlop shoes? If yes?can I pay one particular model sz.EUR 41.I'm a dunlop shoes user.
Never doubt at any age your not gonna look the dogs rockin those my man.
The school was St Francis Primary School. My Grandad lived on Derby on the corner 46 I think. My Nanna lived next door to the caretakers house of whinney banks on Fakenham, she lived on whinney banks road for a bit while the houses got refurbished. Sounds like you were Downside Road way, that's the road i grew up on - and I'm old as well because I remember the garages actually having garages on them haha. That alleyway from Greenlands where it stopped, is the one that led on to Bruce ave which is now blocked off. Class memories as a kid playing in the area!
@paulakay9915 hi Paula. I was indeed from your area. I grew up on Stoneyhurst. In fact, I think you were in my year at school (Acklam Grange). I left in '94. It's strange how the x2 different 'blocks in the school (K and L) managed to keep people apart so well. I hardly saw anyone I knew that was in K (as I was in L). I remember the houses on WB getting modernised and people moving around whilst they were being done. As I recall they were done twice, the first time my grandparents were moved onto West Crescent. The second time (when the new windows and porches were added) my grandparents' house missed out. A few never got done for some reason. Strange how all the alleyways have been blocked off yet the one onto Derby Ave is still partially there. I don't remember thr one from Greenlands onto Bruce
@middlesbroughmike1027 haha, you will have been in my sister Debbie's year, Debbie kay, she was in L block. I started in 92 and was in K block. Used to play on stoneyhurst though and tag along with our Debbie at times. What's your surname? I think the alleyways got blocked off when they knocked the school down and built the new bungalows. I lived on Bruce ave for a bit with our Debbie then got my own house on East Crescent in 99. Number 52 i think, it got knocked down for the new builds as well.
@@paulakay9915 Yeah you're right. I was a school with your Debbie! I remember now (I've never been great with names and even less so now)! I started AG in 89 and left in 94. It's a shame so many of the houses got knocked down on the WB as they were really well built. The estate looks good now and it's been refreshed somewhat but did it really need it? I don't think so.
@middlesbroughmike1027 I remember them starting knocking them down in 99, it was getting proper rough then though.
back in 1974 i worked for a company called HC troldahl .they were based on Bridge st west just under the tunnel near the station .I was there one day fitting catering equipment with an engineer [i was only an apprentice back then ] there were lots of guys there doing various jobs .The state of the art sound system [for 1974 ] had just been installed and the guys were about tp test it .The very first record ever played was Loves theme by Barry white .When it came on we all stopped to listen .The sound was fantastic .i had never heard anything like it .Everyone just stood and looked at each other and when the record finished we all clapped
On our dinner break from Oakland School we used to pop over to the bakers (now hot roast) and go halves on an uncut loaf that the baker then cut in half for me and a mate, then we used to go along to the chippy (now primo’s) and ask them to fill each half of our loafs full of chips! Great memories Mike!
I think the Cabbage Club was Acklam Garden City if I remember rightly 👍
Thanks for creating this video Mike, I too grew up in Whinney Banks on Hairehills Road opposite the pig alleys.
I lived in the children's (girls) home at 40 whinney banks road in 1983. I was there for about 5 months before going to live with nanna on Oxford Road. I was just talking about it yesterday, it wasn't a rough home at all, we were all pretty well behaved and had lovely staff. It was a safe place for girls who had come from not safe places
@DiAllinson that's nice to know. I had a feeling it was a pleasant place and there was certainly no trouble from it all the time I was there. Shame it had to go. I don't actually remember it being knocked down.
My mam & Nana lived on derby avenue (sandra & Minnie) I’m sure they used to be a park on the field after it
Hi. I remember your nanna and grandad. Your grandad always used fo fix my bike when it broke. I lived over the road next door to Maggie and Mrs Andrews (dot) was friends with my mam Mrs Mcmenamin

Thanks Mike enjoyed that trip down memory Lane although without your lovely Boro accent and some of the original houses and street names I could have been on any new estate in the UK! 50 plus years I was walking from my house opp the original community centre ( Springvale Terrace) up East Row to pick up Sandra Peacock from 14 East Crescent who sadly won’t be in anymore as her house has gone 🥲. On a positive note my mam would have loved those new houses and the fact it was called Acklam Green as she always aspired to live in Acklam and wouldn’t tell anyone she lived in Whinney Banks ( bit of a snob) but I always corrected and reminded her 🤣. Many many happy memories . Keep up the good work!
@juliesalmon9694 thanks for your lovely comments. I lived with my parents in Acklam but it was so close to Whinney Banks that it may as well have been. However, my Mam is a Whinney Banks girl born and bred and she's always been proud of that! My Dad is from West Lane so neither of them travelled far from 'home'. It must be in our blood as I haven't gone that far either!
