Motorworld was originally a branch of the old M'bro firm of Pybus Bros Grocers, who also had a shop from the early 1900's to the corner of Roman Rd Shops, opp the Linthope Hotel (the one with the balustrade at high level)

I attended Whinney Banks School from 1948 until 1954 . The sweet shop on the corner of Acklam and Cambrige road was Jonstons ,
I remember Maudes fruit shop , Weastell Butchers , Duncans , a barbers shop nearer Green Lane and I think a shop called Posgate was the last one before Green Lane . I had to call there for bread on the way home for lunch , chewing the corners off.We lived in Melrose Avenue .

Great video Mike, just found them so i've got quite a bit to go through.
The Hinton's "house" logo was actually a set of scales, I know this because my dad was under manager in Hinton's bakery and corrected me many years ago, I thought it was a house.

@Keith310362 interesting. My Mam worked there back in day and always referred to it as a house. I'm pretty certain it'll still be there, albeit hidden behind the Sainsbury's logo once again.

Airo's I think was 'Honeyman's' Green grocers and next door 'Shipmans' Bakers. 'China Red' was a Butchers - Creasers (?) then Lancasters ? 'Heron' was 'Moor(e)s' supermarket back in my day - 60's/early 70's. The 'Wok King' was 'Merediths' Bakers and the white shuttered detached shop next door I seem to recall was a Cobblers. There was also a 'Hills' Bakers up towards 'Newboulds' and also a Fish and Chip shop. I lived on Acklam road just along from the shops 1956-1977.

Newboulds savaloys were wonderful. When I was a kid on Acklam road in the 50s and sixties (I went to Whinney banks Primary and Junior schools) the shop on the corner of Acklam road and Cambridge road was a sweet shop. My father was a regular at the Cambridge so might have known your grandfather. I used to go shopping for my mother at the coop and so I had to know the coop divvy number which I now use for my bank card. Bevans foods was Moores Supermarket in the 70s - My brother was manager there for a number of years. yes it was a papershop at the left end of the newer buildings. China red was a butchers shop in the 50s and 60s run by Mr Creesaw (spelling may be wrong) . Motor world was Pybus's. It was a delicatessan and had a wonderful smell of ground coffee and salami. Definitely NOT a supermarket Definitely NOT a Tesco. Polite staff and great (but not cheap) food - there was another branch at the corner of Oxford Road and Roman Road. At 9.15 you can see 192 Acklam Road where I was brought up. In the house on the corner of Whinneybanks road and Acklam Road lived Mrs Fielding who was posh because she had an electric stove. In the middle of the row of houses on the other side of the road an elderly man ran a cobblers business in his front room. I have lived in Aotearoa (New Zealand) since 1989 which is a bit different to Middlesbrough

    Hi Guy's,
I hope you've had a great Christmas. Thanks for all the comments on this. I'm flabbergasted at how much interest this short video has attracted, and it's been really interesting to read through all your memories.
I plan to do a follow up video, revisiting the shops to add in your memories (those that I can link to particular units) so be sure to keep an eye out in the new year for that.
    Middlesbrough Mike. :)

The nicknack shop was called Filigree. My dad and his brother and brother in law ran it, with offices above. Every time the chip shop switched its fryers on, the surge in the electricity supply caused the electricity to trip. Dad said it was a nightmare.
