- Another video slideshow showing the changes in Middlesbrough over many decades using old photos and new photos taken from from as close to the same position as is possible now.
This video looks at some of Middlesbrough's pubs and how they have changed over the years
The music used in this video is Kevin MacLeod ~ String Impromptu Number and can be found here:-

The Green Tree is not on Gurney Street, but on the corner of Gilkes Street and Baxter Street......I lived there ! Another great video, thanks.
I think we can come to the conclusion that Middlesbrough was A LOT prettier in the old days
Architecturally yes but it was a harder life for the people living there than it is today.
Nowt wrong with Boro nowadays really, just had major problems around the early 2000s that set us back. Specifically no support from the government which is typical of North East towns and chavs moving into to decent estates like North ormesby and turning them into war zones
I live in Leeds. The amount of pubs and Clubs that have close over the last 25 years is truly frightening. It is happening all.over the Country. It is a truly heartbreaking . Again , another great video.
Thanks Ian, the large town centre pub chains which can sell cheap beer have taken the custom from other pubs especially the old estate pubs as they couldn't compete with them on price. Also some people blamed the smoking ban for the demise of the local boozer.
Yes my dear! and its all by design! we live in terrible times! Its my grandchildren I worry about!
@@annteak2669 Yup, I moved to Michigan where weed is legal!
Incredible. I remember most of these, especially the Imperial next to Binns where my grandad used to drink. Thank you for reviving these memories.
EXCELLENT Slide Show, Stephen - I worked as a barman in the Grand in the early 70's when I was a student. I'm sure my experiences there made me a much more rounded teacher who understood life at the sharp end many years later ! ! ! The memories of my time in the 'Palm Lounge' will stay with me forever !
Thanks Geoff, as a drinker in some of these pubs in the mid '70's I can understand how those experiences helped in your teaching career.
Thank you so much for posting this . Love hearing and seeing history from my home time . Was a real treat !
You're most welcome Tommy, I usually post videos every couple of months and if you liked this one if you subscribe to my channel you'll get a notification when I post new videos.
That video was perfect you can't beat the old and the new.
Thank you John.
Lived across the Longlands Rd from the Brambles Farm Hotel on Cargo Fleet Lane - had my first pub meal in there - sad to see it gone.
Thank you, some precious memories from the past came flooding back .
You're welcome.
Great work thanks for posting!
Does anybody remember The Erimus? It consisted of a row of railway houses, called, Erimus Terrace, and Pioneer Street behind it. It stood opposite the Stockton Racecourse. It,s where I was born and lived until I was 12, before moving into a brand new house up at Littleboy Park which was a completely new estate built for those people as all the Erimus was to be demolished. We thought we were so posh.
Missing the Broadway opposite the Palladium buildings on Eastbourne Rd. - played a big role in keeping me alive back in the early 50s - a miniature whisky obtained by granddad while he had swift pint was the only medicine available to combat a chest infection/cold/flu - remember sat in his pickup truck waiting with gran and my late brother, fascinated by the sodium lighting
My grandparents and mother were bar staff in the Roseberry pub just after the war.The landlord was a retired middlesbrough footballer called Billy Pease.
My local pat in the 90s and my dad's from the 50s. God it was a shit hole but I loved the place, it had a character and charm about it
The Navigation saw a lot of use by those of us who worked at Cochranes across the railway lines especially at weekends - good lunch of three pints in there before returning to work.
Excellent brought back many memories but at the same time very sad
Thanks John, i suppose the sadness is caused by the realisation that the pubs disappeared and can only remain as memories of perhaps better times.
So many memories. I moved away from the Boro in 1983 at age 23 so I've only a short history of drinking there, including the occasional underage drinking when I managed to pass for 18, but seeing some of these pubs brings it all back. The Masham, The Cleveland, The Red and White Roses, and The Yellow Rose. But my over-riding memory of going to The Grand, across the way from the train station(?) when they'd have the 'gay nights' in the upstairs room. Having to go through the bar and run the gauntlet of jeers, 'ey up, backs against the wall, lads' and 'look sharp, the poufters are in', then up the stairs to pay the elderly couple the 30p entry fee. I can still vividly picture them, though the names elude me.Oh and the bricks coming through the large windows which landed on the dance floor, and the angry screeches from the street below! This all took placr around 1978/9, and we really took a risk going there, but as I recall it was the only pub in town where we could all meet up in relative safety. We also had The Contessa, opposite the dole offices and on the opposite corner to the National Reserves Club where my dad and his brothers drank.I actually did bar work in The Contessa from time to time, loved the faded seediness of the place. Aye, happy memories.
I feel so sorry for you having to listen to that homophobia
Shame you broke the law and drank when you weren’t 18 though
Read that all back - how are those HAPPY memories?!
My dad was manager at the contessa in the early 70’s, we lived around the corner in thorn street
I was brought up in the Vane Arms pub on Wilson street ,then moved for the new road which was been built the A66.
There was also another pub further down Wilson street called the Shingles .
I've Been In most of them apart for the ones knocked down for the Cleveland centre. My great uncle Bill Smith had the Cleveland in North ormesby. My aunty jean parry the empire on linthorpe road. Every pub different but great memories, well mostly lol. The town was like the wild west some Saturday nights. I've always said I'm going to buy The Masham and open it back up! Pubs in every Town, village and city shutting. Healthier I suppose, no smokey rooms, excessive drinking etc. But no craic, no laughing until you're aching with the natural comedians and comediennes, Boro girls will shoot any gadgie down with a vicious put down lol!
This is great presentation. I'm doing bar work now, and the margins are so tight. My bar will charge £3.50 for a cask ale, and obviously the supermarkets make this look expensive.
Not just the supermarkets Simon, but the large pub chains selling some beer at under £2 a pint.
Went to Stainsby School a short way from the Coronation pub - had to drag out a certain Norman Moorsom in full guards uniform, knocking back a few beers because he was too nervous to on stage in the school G&S - he got his nerve back after about the fourth playing of the overture.
my mum and dad managed the Cambridge Hotel in Acklam for a little while from about 1984 or 85.
That was the flag ship pub in the area for the brewery they used to train all of their staff there then send them to work in their other pubs back in the day.
Good days for many..Councils and Labour have ruin our town..
Those pubs must have seen some characters over the years. The Middlesbrough women used to fight like men lol
Yes it must've been like the wild west back then.
Had some good times in a lot of them pubs . The pennymans a fav when came out teesside bridge after a half shift overtime .
I'm a fast reader and it's just as well.
Ever thought it would be a great idea to have slowed the captions down a bit?
it's ridiculously fast and more care should have been taken winth them.
Like I said, I managed to read them all before they faded out but I know for sure 99% of your other viewere won't have done the same.
Other than that it is a good entertaining video!
I think it was the Pennymans Arms in North Ormesby where my mam followed my grandad and watched him do a ‘special knock’ on the side door to be allowed in. The Masons meeting place!
Had my first pint in the White Rose, guess the building is still there at least. Great vid 👍
It's an Indian restaurant mate white rose gone red rose gone only the yella left
I had my first pint at the Lion Inn on Blakey Ridge.
My gran used to give me a couple of quid to walk round to The White Rose and buy a quart of Black and White from the off-license. I wasn't the youngest kid in line. I remember the Old Vic from 1972. Middlesbrough was always smelly. It's cleaner now and less fun.
Does anyone remember blinkers it was up a street off Russell Street
Surprised no Robin Hood.Good fun in the 80's when working on ships there.Capt Cook,Masham,Zetland.Good memories
Really enjoyed this. But wish you could have featured also The Empire.
Unfortunately I couldn't find an old photo of The Empire so couldn't include it Jonathan.
@@BigMack1959 Wow I didn't expect such a speedy reply! Good on ya mate!
@@jonathanmcroberts8549 I happened to be online looking for old Boro photos when I got a notification of your comment so thought it was only polite to reply.
Mint cheers
Don’t know if I missed it but the oldest pub in Middlesbrough is the Ship Inn over the border/St Hilda’s.
It wasn't included in this video but there is another video that I'm currently working on which will certainly include The Ship Inn so look out for in it in the next few weeks Kelly.
@@BigMack1959 Thanks very much I’ve subscribed. Breaks my heart to see the state of it now. Wish we could raise the money to fix it.
@@kellyis30 , the way things are going unless it's to do with the University money is in short supply 😞
@@BigMack1959 I know, councillors and politicians do more bad than good but at least everything their building now won’t stands the test of time unlike the beautiful buildings they’ve destroyed.
Everything that has ever happened or existed, even yourself, happened because of change. Change is a fundamental part of reality itself.
Have a pint chill
My memory of the Masham was sitting outside with my late brother sharing a hot chicken sandwich while granddad had a swift pint.
My memories of the Masham was playing dominoes with my dad who worked at Boots
The Cleveland Hotel on Smeaton Street, North Ormesby was not demolished in the late 1970s, it was demolished about 1986
Stop bellyaching and nit picking this guy has taken ages to put these together
Used to go in the Acklam before going next door to the Arena
No mention of the Marton hotel and country club
Had my first legal pint in the Lord Byron I thought it t had been demolished, it was next to the little pork shop!
The Cleveland in North ormesby was open till 1983 we hired the function room in July 1983
The only one that’s done well is ‘doctor Browns’
Same by ours boss pubs always packed out full of good lads closed down then pulled down by the council,so people can't socialise locally and are pushed towards the town centre for a bevvy.just a way of breaking up strong communities.
Crown and mitre has been done up, looks nice now.
Thanks Noah I'll have to go back and take another photo👍
@@BigMack1959 no problem mate, I think it's an apartment block now though. Went past it after the Boro game yesterday. Shame it wasn't restored as a pub but looks nice enough 👍
Wieviel Kills hast du eigentlich am miesten in Pub Games gehabt?
Green Tree was not in Gurney St.
Yep my mistake, should've put the corner of Gilkes St. & Baxter St.
Hi would you remember the name of the pub in the middle of Richardson st...There was also a Barbers on the same st...Cheers
The red rose is now rose funeral services.
Nooo😭
Wasn't the Westminster Hotel a cinema before it was a pub?
No the Regent was further down and now is a supermarket.
Wat about the pub that burnt in ormesby
Is it me or were the fuck is the grenadier on trimdon avenue
The Brunswick was a great pub.....fuckin A66 total blot on Boro thanks to incompetent council.
Depressing
Very sad really.
where about is the cheapest pint in the boro today.
Unless a certain pub has a special promotion I would say Lloyds Bar or The Discovery (previously Yates).
Issacs
Does anybody remember brio and his mate Kevin they went to stay London for a while and boy lie they were football casuals
You mean Andy Boyle? He passed away recently if it's same lad.
@@daveyt2314 taffy you mean?
Utb
Great redevelopment plans - not!
Knock everything down to make a car park.
Kind of a bit depressing also?
I shall bring to ruin all those ruining the Earth
